Many times, burnout almost becomes synonymous with the experience of doing work. It is simply what work is. We begin to think that work isn't supposed to be fun, that it's supposed to be hard work with a furrowed brow or you just put your shoulder down and plow through. But for so many Career Clarity seekers out there, this is a kind of a reality for work that we're unwilling to accept as the forever truth. Feeling burnout does not lead to fulfillment, it does not lead to sustainability. So if you are feeling like you might be sliding into a period of burnout, or maybe you are definitely in the thick of burnout. You're likely wondering “How do I get out of this? How do I recover? What do I do? How do I possibly summon up any more energy? Because I feel like I'm so exhausted and drained already.” This episode of the podcast is going to be a fabulous resource for you. Kim Irving is a burnout expert joining us to share all things about sustainable success. A common topic that so many people have when they're going through a career transition is around “How do I tell my story?” For so many people who are wanting to do something new and something different, they have been thinking, “I don't know what I want to do, but it's not this.” We can often feel trapped by our past experiences, and specifically our past professional work experiences. That can make it feel difficult to tell the story of who we are beyond the job titles we've most recently had. One topic that we have not talked about often, maybe ever, on the Career Clarity Show is navigating, trying to get into or get out of the government sector of jobs. Now, this is an area that is near and dear to my heart, because I spent the first part of my career and launched this business back when I was living and working in the Washington DC area. And when you are living in that part of the country in the United States you are going to meet lots of people who are federal employees. Then again when I moved out to Colorado, I found that I was still meeting lots of folks who are working in local and state government in different capacities, and some who are wanting out. And other people who are really wanting to feel like they were having a deeper impact in their careers, but who are currently in the private sector, who were looking for ways in. Navigating your way into or out of government as an employment source is tricky. It does not look like any of the things that you have learned if you have been exclusively job searching in the private sector. Or if you have been in government for your entire career, making the pivot back to civilian life is going to look really different in terms of how you talk about yourself, how you position yourself and what activities you do. I am so excited to have Elyse Levine, host of the Career Switch Podcast, to help me dig into all of this information. On this episode of the Career Clarity Show, we are taking a a different direction than what you might hear when you listen to traditional career advice. So often, the people who rise to fame in the coaching world will be people who are peddling advice like “Just push through. No matter what, you can do it”. And while there are probably nuggets of truth in those pieces of advice, it can perpetuate oppressive and micro aggressive advice when so often in our situations in our lives, what we really need is for someone to truly see our circumstances and our situation. This is especially true if you belong to an underrepresented group that's been historically excluded. Being aware of systems of oppression that affect you may not be as visible to folks who don't belong to the same identities in the same circumstances that you do. Chyrsta Berry, speaker and authors, is here to share some refreshing career advice. We are going to talk about how to believe in yourself. These are topics where there are so many resources out there in the universe. But they all come from what I lovingly call the pale, stale male perspective. While it can be billed as tried and true to feel relevant, helpful, or equity and justice centric, so many miss the mark. So the conversation we are having on the Career Clarity Show is about what's changed, what's different, and how to think about leadership and career progression and development through the lens of the uniqueness of not necessarily falling into the pale, stale male category. We are talking about a topic that in the 100 plus episodes of the show we have never covered before: Parental Leave. Because when we talk about career clarity and finding a path that feels like it truly fits you, one of the biggest pieces of that is the life that you want to have. It's not just about the job you're doing, or the responsibilities that you have on your job description. It's about how your work enables you to live the life that you want to live. And for many of us that life includes a family. So I am so excited for us to talk about the topic of parenthood, parental leave, and making work work for you. Today on the Career Clarity Show, we're talking about one of the biggest factors that can go into dissatisfaction with your job and with your workplace - organizational culture. If you have worked in any sort of work environment, you know what a difference the energy of the organization makes, the values of the organization makes. And you know what an incredible difference there is between a healthy happy culture where you feel like you can thrive and do great work, and maybe not so healthy and happy culture where you don't feel like you have psychological safety or can bring your best stuff to the office or to the workplace. Authors Chris Edmonds and Mark Babbitt are here to talk about what the elements are that go into culture, why culture matters, how to be intentional, how to think about it, and perhaps even how to screen it from afar. On today's podcast, Lisa Lewis Miller, author and founder of Career Clarity, joins us to explore how we can stay centered while making a career change. Lisa emphasizes the importance of exploring our values, who we want to be, what lifestyle we want to have before taking action. For instance, start by telling a trusted friend you are interested in making a career move! She explains how this is a powerful practice that creates a snowball of effects. Lisa also drops wisdom for how perfectionists and people-pleasers can use mindfulness to untangle from unhelpful patterns and actually find work that fuels their soul. As people are being asked to, or invited to or even mandated to go back into the office for their work, each of us is having a big moment of reckoning. Is this what I want? Is this what's gonna be best for me and my family? Is this actually needed to do my best work? In this season, I think every single one of us is going through a period of some serious discernment. So today we're talking about the great resignation - where it's coming from, who's participating in it, and helping you to walk through and think through a guide for yourself. If you are staring at a career crossroads, wondering about what's coming next for you, given the evolving nature of what it means to return back to the office, this conversation is for you. Because we are going to be talking about things like well-being, empowerment, confidence, standing up for yourself, and identifying what your needs are, so you can make sure that they're getting met no matter what decision you make in the future. Now, when it comes to thinking about career change, it can be really intimidating to think about what you should be making in your next job. When you're making a pivot, it can feel really difficult to know how to position what your experience is worth. For so many of us, there is a huge fear that can pop up that if you make a move into a new industry or a new job function then you'll have to start back at the bottom of the ladder. If you've ever had any of those worries and fears, I am so excited for you to hear today's episode of the Career Clarity Show. For this episode of the podcast, I want to go in a little bit of a different direction than you may have heard on some of our other episodes. One of the things that is so incredible about so many of the people who come on the Career Clarity Show is that they've always had this ability to navigate career transitions with authority and confidence. I have been realizing more and more that this is not the way that career change goes for all of us. In fact, there are more times than not when it comes to making a transition, something happens in your life that turns things upside down. So many people don't get to have that beautiful heroic narrative of standing on the mountaintop all by yourself having done it in isolation. We saw evidence of this with how the pandemic affected entire industries, markets, and countries. So on today's podcast Kim “Kid” Curry is here to share his story about overcoming things outside of his control. He'll share ways that each of us can play the hand that we're dealt and find a path forward, even when it's not necessarily on the terms that we would have liked. One of the reasons why mindset can feel tricky to talk about is because so often when we're going through a season of transition and change, what we want are the tactics: What do I need to do? What are the next steps? What's going to get me results? While the tactics are incredibly important, there is an unspoken piece to the tactics that can dramatically affect their success rate for you. That's the attitude mindset and belief layer that sits on top. You can do the exact same tactics as every other job seeker, but if you aren't feeling good about yourself or believe in what you're doing, you're not bringing positive energy to it. If you find yourself in a position where you are trying to navigate making a change, and it just doesn't feel like you're getting the traction and results that you're looking for, you are definitely going to want to listen to today's episode. Chelle Johnson joins us to share the power of being in the right state of mind in making your tactics as effective as they possibly can be for you.
