Your career takes up a pretty big chunk of your life. Do you enjoy what you do? Would you go so far as to say you are happy? If you know for sure that your job isn't a good fit, where do you start? A career change can feel daunting. But it doesn't have to. When you focus on what makes you happy and take intentional steps to reach your goals, you can change the trajectory of your career. In this episode, I'm chatting with Carolina Cobo, former recruiter turned software developer. She shares valuable insight into how to leverage your current experience towards a career change as well as the importance of considering your future self and what will keep you happy and fulfilled in the long term. Her story is one that I think a lot of people can relate to, and her recruiter perspective will give you a leg up on making your leap. In this episode, you'll learn... Why Carolina made a career change from technical recruiter to software developer [04:15] How the COVID pandemic was a force in pushing Carolina to make a leap [09:51] How her experience in Ireland opened her eyes to other work cultures and new possibilities [11:56] How taking risks can bring big rewards [13:15]  The importance of putting yourself out there regardless of the outcome [15:15] The steps Carolina took to leave recruitment and try a different path [16:35] How online courses can give you a taste of a new career path [17:53] The value of formal bootcamps when making a career switch [18:51] The importance of not giving up and recognizing little wins as critical to your overall journey [22:04] Why you should consider your future self (wants and needs 5 or 10 years from now) when thinking about your career [25:19] How Carolina realized that she wants more from a career than “just a job” [30:44] How to make yourself stand out in your CV when switching careers [33:32] [40:08] How using keywords and networking on LinkedIn benefits you on your journey [38:06] How connecting with companies and recruiters can help get your foot in the door [42:03] That sometimes taking a pay cut or starting at a junior level can be worth it in the long run [44:48] Why community and connection is so important in any career, but especially during a change [49:32] Inspiration to make your own move if you're considering a change [51:01]   If you're looking for intention and happiness in your career change, be sure to tune into this episode. She decided she wanted to live abroad and improve her English, so she quit her job and moved to Ireland in 2018, where she worked for nearly three years as a technical recruiter. She wasn't happy as a recruiter, but software and computers were always an interest of hers. At the beginning of the COVID pandemic, she decided to take the leap to give software development a try. After completing an online course on Udemy and a formal bootcamp at Code Institute in Dublin, she started her first job as a software developer in October 2021.

Gaele Lalahy had a successful career in consumer electronics as Board Member and Head of Brand Communications & Olympic marketing at Panasonic. Having been with the same company for two decades, Gaele became fearful of not having tried a different career, so she decided to take the leap and leave her job without a plan in place. When the opportunity came up to run Dr Louise Newson's balance menopause support app, it didn't immediately grab Gaele's interest because, as she admits, she knew nothing about the menopause or the scale of the problem facing women. After doing her own research and realising hundreds of thousands of women were suffering and struggling to get treatment, Gaele came on board as the Chief Operating Officer for balance at the start of 2021. Since then, the app has grown ten-fold and is really helping to change the narrative around perimenopause and menopause and empower women with the information they need to get help from their local GP practices. Gaele shares some of the remarkable statistics that show how the app helps women get a diagnosis and treatment more efficiently, and she discusses plans for the app's future that will make even more of a difference to people's lives. Gaele's 3 reasons to use the balance app: The balance app is a safe space to share and get support from like-minded people who also going through the peri/menopause. All the information on the app is very easy to digest, all medically approved and based on the latest evidence. I recently had the opportunity to interview my former client Andrea for the podcast! What fun to be able to have Andrea share her journey of finding a new career with the listeners.  In our conversation, Andrea shares where she was at the beginning of her journey in finding a new career and where she is at today!   Andrea is a Pacific Northwest resident and mom of a nine-year-old girl who is a very important part of her life!  Any type of career change had her daughter first and foremost in her thoughts.  She shares that it had been a struggle for her to figure out a good career fit for herself in the past because she didn’t take the time to listen to herself.  She spent too much time listening to a lot of the other outside noise and other people’s advice. Sound familiar? Even though she had a lot of different ideas on a career she didn’t trust herself.   Our conversation continues as  Andrea shares a bit about how she was managing her job and why it was important now to move forward and prioritize a career change.  We discuss what mattered most to her in this decision and why she felt that life coaching was a good fit for her on this journey.  For Andrea working with a coach was a step forward in her future!   Andrea felt that us working together was a good fit and that in our exploratory call we discussed a plan that resonated with her and she could see herself accomplishing her goal.  Andrea picked the 1:1  Eight Week Coaching Package and at first felt that perhaps that would not be enough time to get her desired results.  But she soon acknowledged that the sessions were “super focused”.  Andrea says that “you just have to take a step in the right direction” and that’s what she did through her journey. Having someone there each week to hold her accountable was helpful as well as having a safe place to share with no judgments made the process easier.   Throughout the discussion, Andrea shares what the process looked like in finding her new dream career which would leave her feeling confident and fulfilled.  Not only did she have our weekly 1:1 session but she also had weekly worksheet homework and describes that process and how it helped her along the way.  Andrea shares that the Priorities and Time Tracker worksheet were very enlightening and helped her to be more proactive with her goals and blocking time for those priorities was a key to success.   Andrea did land her dream career before the end of the eight-week session and feels wonderful that she is doing something fulfilling and helping people which was a big priority. She is also showing her daughter along the way that anything is possible.   She shares that if you are on the fence about coaching think of it as an investment in yourself.  “Why shouldn’t you invest in yourself if you are not sure what to do?”   “  You just gotta decide that you’re important and that you are worth it”.   Lastly Andrea shares “You’re worthy of having your dreams and having the blessings and beautiful things that you are desiring”.   I want to thank Andrea for being courageous to come on the podcast to share her story!  It takes a lot to get out of your comfort zone to do a podcast.  I’m sure you are inspiring women in midlife with your journey!    Are you ready to start your next chapter? The way we work is changing. The rise of freelancing and the gig economy means flexibility and independence, but it also means living with less security. Or does it? While you can't future-proof your job, you can future-proof your career. Our guest this week Michelle Gibbings shows us how. In this episode, we examine how leaders get fit for the future of work, prepare for the inevitable tides of change, and develop the confidence to take decisive action in our working lives.     When people ask Michelle what she does, how does she like to reply? The subtitle of Career Leap is "how to reinvent and liberate your career." What does it mean to liberate your career? What decisions should we make to future-proof our career? Do many people consider their own why or purpose in their career? How does the future of work look? The future with AI, VR, AR, 3D, when CSIRO say half the jobs today are at risk of automation. Do the next generations still think in terms of a career? Creating a portfolio of work that excites you. What's the gig economy and how's it going to impact the current workplace? What are the core technology competencies that will be most in demand by 2022? Michelle knows how to ask a question. Is there a key to questioning? What impact did Michelle's childhood environment have on her thirst for learning? What are old career parameters and what are they being replaced with?   LINKS Michelle Gibbings https://www.michellegibbings.com   The Mojo Radio Show website themojoradioshow.com   The Mojo Radio Show on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoRadioShowPodcast/   The Mojo Radio Show on Twitter https://twitter.com/tmrspod   The Mojo Radio Show Answering Machine 08 7200 6656 08 7200 MOJO   The Mojo Radio Show copyright Gary Bertwistle & Darren Robertson   Products or companies we discuss are not paid endorsements. The NO BULL$H!# Marketing Podcast

Cut the BS - Don't Pass the Buck: Ever deal with someone who just doesn't want to make a decision? Drives me crazy. That's why I am so interested in a series of experiments conducted by researchers at Northeastern and Indiana universities in which participants could either accept or hand off responsibility for stuff like choosing hotels, meals and other tasks for themselves or for someone else, under a variety of conditions.Made me think of my family trying to decide where to go for dinner. The study showed that participants were more apt to delegate decisions when the consequences would impact other people and when all the options were unappealing. This thought process was driven by a desire to avoid blame or criticism and to not feel responsible if something bad happened to another person. The researchers found that when participants did delegate, they did so when they could defer to someone of equal or higher status—someone who would be deemed responsible for the outcome. In other words, they wanted to pass the buck to their boss or someone in authority. As a leader, leverage these results to help with your delegation. Reassure team members that they won't be blamed or criticized for a bad result. This is easier said than done. Keep in mind that feedback is often perceived as criticism. Be clear about how the feedback is designed to help them grow personally and professionally. And for those of you who just instinctively pass the buck or misperceive feedback as criticism, I won't say cut the bullshit…I'll say: Think back to this study the next time you're about to become defensive or run from a decision.Interview with Suzy TeeleTaking a career leap into a new business or industry can be a challenging decision to make, full of uncertainty and doubts as to whether one might succeed, or regret the decision afterward.
