Show Notes: Dan Bauer, a Harvard Business School graduate and independent consultant, talks about the NSLC, or National Student Leadership Conference program, sponsored by Inc Magazine. The program offers a nine-day immersion in entrepreneurship for high school students aged 14 to 18 from around the world. The students are vetted on their GPAs, and the program takes place on six prestigious college campuses, including Yale, Columbia, Duke, Michigan, Cal-Berkeley, and UCLA. The NSLC Origins Story The origin story for the program began with Dan's business, the MBA Exchange, which focused on career and education consulting. After selling the business in 2016, he decided to find another outlet for teen entrepreneurship education and found that there was room for a better resource with the pedigree of top colleges and a platform for engagement with real-world entrepreneurs from various industries. Dan chose to aggregate best-in-class offerings, such as curriculum, camp teachers, and sponsors, and worked with them to create a successful partnership. Unpacking the NSLC Program The National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) provides campus housing, administration, supervision, academic adjacent components, social aspects, leadership training, field trips, and dorm life for high school students. It also offers a business simulation where students make real-time decisions that impact the share price of a fictitious public company. The competition is augmented by a pitch competition where students form small teams and work together to formulate a business idea using lessons learned about business and entrepreneurship. There are four sets of partners: individual colleges providing dorm space and classroom space, the National Student Leadership Conference providing administration, adult supervision, and teachers from the National Federation of Teaching Entrepreneurship. Inc. Magazine promotes the program and participates in the curriculum and structure. Teachers also participate in the judging panel and presentations for the group going to Columbia. Dan explains what his experience brings to the table and experiences gained through recruitment and outreach to CEOs who want to pay it forward and share their experience and knowledge. The NSLC Model Dan explains the structure of the business, which is a joint venture between a group of partners, with the NSLC being the core strength. They have a solid foundation in hands-on interaction with students and parents, with full-time staff. Dan handles interaction with entrepreneurs, speakers, and judges, while NFTE handles teacher selection training and placement. Inc. provides promotional support and weighs in on content topics and speaker selection. The conversation turns to building long-term, intensive relationships with schools, which involve multiple administrators on both ends. Dan explains that the typical profile of students attending is diverse, from introverts to Alpha students who demonstrate leadership and charisma. The teams are built accordingly, balancing EQ and IQ strengths. The diversity of the group, geographically, racial, racially, gender, and interest wise, is a plus for the experience. The Curriculum and Learning Outcomes The curriculum for the program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of marketing, operations, finance, and leadership. It is an interactive program that includes topics like break even ratios, valuations, partnerships, and strategic alliances. One of the highlights was the introduction of AI in business models, which inspired students to explore new ideas and Dan shares the range of impressive innovative ideas the students developed. The program fits well with traditional business education programs like Junior Achievement, which has an academic bias and advisors. The program mixes students from various backgrounds into the same classroom, allowing them to learn from each other, teachers, mentors, and pitch judges. This exposes students to meaningful, actionable concepts and practices every day. The Experience that Led to the Program Dan talks about how his experience led to establishing the program and making it work. From a Bootstrap startup to his business growth and sale journey, he believes that having a Inc. 5000 badge gave him credibility and familiarity with the pool of entrepreneurs he would tap as speakers. He believes that trust, openness, willingness to take risks, and willingness to help before asking for help are the core of the language he speaks. Dan explains how his background integrated with the program and opened doors to partners and contributors. Volunteering at NSLC To become involved with the program, Dan suggests starting at NSLC leaders.org. The speakers and mentors and pitch judges include Inc. 5000, EO Entrepreneurs Organization; Shark Tank CEOs, and Harvard alumni. The entrepreneurial community is a caring, open, and Pay It Forward group, and Dan encourages connecting with others and helping in return. Ronald's narrative unfolds as a testament to resilience, self-discovery, and an unyielding dedication to helping others achieve financial success. Born into a modest family, he embraced the values of hard work and resourcefulness from an early age. Ronald's initial journey led him to the nursing field, where he dedicated eight years of his life working alongside physicians in mid-size to large hospitals.Within the bustling healthcare environment, Ronald observed the intricate interplay between healthcare professionals and the financial intricacies of running a medical practice. Inspired by the physicians he collaborated with, he developed a keen interest in the financial aspects of their work. However, he soon realized that merely being part of the healthcare system did not guarantee financial security.Motivated by a desire for financial independence, Ronald sought guidance from financial companies, hoping to leverage their expertise in planning his path to autonomy. Unfortunately, he encountered barriers in the form of fees that seemed counterproductive to his financial goals.Rather than succumbing to discouragement, these challenges fueled Ronald's determination to take control of his financial destiny. Undeterred, he embarked on a journey of self-education, attending events and seminars to gain insights into personal finance, investment strategies, and retirement planning. Along the way, Ronald forged valuable partnerships with industry leaders, including Transamerica Corporation and Covered California, gaining a deeper understanding of financial practices across various industries. While working with large financial institutions, Ronald realized that the industry lacked a company that could seamlessly combine financial solutions, financial literacy, and collaboration among financial professionals, mirroring the collaborative nature of the medical field. In 2017, he founded Curious Finance, driven by a mission to address these gaps and provide proactive consulting services.Ronald's transformation extended beyond personal gain; it became a mission to empower others. Recognizing the lack of financial literacy among peers and the younger generation, he became a Certified Financial Education Instructor with the National Financial Educator's Council (NFEC), equipped to share his knowledge with those eager to navigate the complexities of personal finance. His community-oriented approach led him to engage with young entrepreneurs in the Bay Area, serving as a judge for the Network of Teaching Entrepreneurship. Collaborating with business partners, he conducted personal finance workshops for students at California State University East Bay (CSUEB) and UC Davis, contributing to the financial education of the next generation.Ronald's commitment to financial education expanded as he joined the NFEC's Personal Finance Speakers Association, broadening his reach and influence. His dedication to continuous learning is evident in his regular consumption of financial literature, keeping him at the forefront of industry trends.Beyond his professional endeavors, Ronald is a man of diverse interests. He finds joy in traveling, attending sports events, and actively engaging in community volunteering, including initiatives for clean communities and blood donation. He passionately supports impactful community foundations.Yet, amidst these varied pursuits, Ronald cherishes moments spent with his wife and two children, especially during family travels and shared experiences. Connor Boyack is the president of Libertas Institute and author of the massively popular Tuttle Twins children's books, which have taught millions of kids the ideas of a free society. Top 3 Value Bombs: 1. Intentionality is what matters. Don't assume your kids are going to follow in your footsteps. 2. You would think that kids these days are getting exposed to the entrepreneurial mindset, abundance, hard work, personal responsibility... But the narrative and the actual teachings in school and on social media are quite the opposite. 3. The type of people who end up as teachers in schools typically don't have an entrepreneurial mindset. They have a very bureaucratic, rule-following type of mindset, which is often in significant conflict with thinking entrepreneurially. Teaching Kids Critical Thinking. We set goals and work hard to achieve them every day, so it's no wonder we become attached to both our goals and the processes by which we work toward them. But the world around us is chaotic and ever-changing, so there is no way to continue to navigate the obstacles and challenges in your path without being highly adaptive. This is true of any goal in business or in life, and the same commitment to recognizing when a pivot is necessary applies. As you pursue any goal, the world changes, and you change. Take that into account and don't be afraid to evolve both your strategy and the goal itself as need be to stay on track. A pivot does not mean you have failed at your original vision. It means you are smart enough to know the definition of success is fluid. We have not one but two special guests on this episode. First, Kenny Turner, the Director of NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship – www.nfte.com) joins us to discuss their partnership with the Do-Or-Dier Visionary Foundation and how NFTE helps young people learn an entrepreneurial mindset. They have educated 1.2million young entrepreneurs since 1987, including DODVF Director, Charles Choice. NFTE IG: @nfte Then we have the winner of the NFTE / DODVF See It. Believe It. Do It. Aalap Shah is a Chicago-born entrepreneur and Founder of 1o8, a performance marketing digital agency focused on driving sales for CPG companies nationwide on e-com and Amazon platforms. They've worked with companies like Gildan, Sweet Leaf Tea, Tio, So Crazy, and more. Aalap has been recognized as a leader in Chicago's minority-owned digital marketing world and is known by multiple entities for his entrepreneurial and charitable endeavors. Crain's Chicago Business recognized him as one of Chicago's young emerging philanthropists, while the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship named him the National Volunteer of the Year. In this episode… One of the greatest concerns for online retailers is retaining customers and keeping them engaged. It is especially critical now because customer acquisition costs have become astronomically high as brands scramble to lift online sales. Currently, only 20% of site visitors account for 50% to 70% of retail sales. Getting new customers is great, but what if you tried to get that returning customer up 30% or 40%? How would your business change? How do you get your existing customers to buy more? That's where the retention loyalty model comes in: this model helps you generate increased profitability more quickly rather than spending insane amounts on new customer acquisitions. Want to find out how? Listen to this episode of the Rising Entrepreneurs Podcast with Dr. Jeremy Weisz featuring the Founder of 1o8 Agency, Aalap Shah. They discuss Aalap's journey to becoming an agency owner, how retail brands can thrive online, the retention loyalty model, and how to increase the profitability of your business.

Catherine Chmelka is an ag teacher and FFA advisor for the David City High School FFA Chapter in David City, Nebraska. As part of her duties she teaches floriculture and agribusiness. There was a time in her life that these courses were just necessary evils that she had to endure to move through the agricultural education that she was seeking, both in high school and college. However, that eventually changed. Catherine's exposure to floriculture awakened a passion in her, that she did not know existed. She fell in love with both horticulture and floriculture and really got inspired to start putting together arrangements with her students that exceeded the bare minimums. Eventually, people in her community noticed this and started hiring her to make arrangements for a couple of different funerals. Catherine and her husband, Justin, also hired themselves by taking care of the flowers for their own wedding. The attention they were getting and the exposure to entrepreneurship had both of them thinking about how they could continue to work this side business out of their home. But then, the local flower/coffee shop in David City came for sale. Catherine and Justin were thinking about purchasing it until they found out there was another buyer looking at it. That changed everything, and they decided that they had to purchase it. They wrapped up the purchase in June of 2020, changed the name to "402 Floral" and hit the ground running. That was 18 months ago. Today, when Catherine teaches her student both about floriculture and agribusiness, she is teaching the lessons that she learned in her own business, possibly just moments before coming to class. She is also learning more and more about florists actually do, and she is bringing that real world experience into the classroom with her. Enrollment in both her floriculture classes as well as her agribusiness classes has increased, but of course people know that she isn't just teaching these subjects, she is living them.
In 2004, David was wrapping up his freshman year at Baylor University and started his first business. His parents told him they would give him money towards his MBA or his first business, and he immediately took the seed funding and ran with it. By college graduation however, the company was not yet large enough to support a full-time salary, so David moved in with his sister who was working on her Masters degree. He slept on a Coleman air mattress for 9 months on the living room floor and went on the road pitching investors to raise a round of funding. The first 40 investors turned him down and he was down to just $300 in savings with the reality approaching he was going to have to go out and get a job. He firmly believed that God had a plan and he had to just keep going. After nearly 100 pitches, five investors came on board and provided the $250,000 in funding required to grow the business. The same day the round of funding was closed, his air mattress popped, and he was able to get his own apartment and buy a real bed. Fast forward to today and David has started over twenty businesses (several of those with Boss Club co-founder Charlie Gasmire). In 2012 David and Charlie co-founded Vendevor, an ecommerce software business which successfully sold to Payscape in July of 2015. David's recent successes include First Centurion Group which sold a variety of consumer goods from its own line of skin care products and work-out supplements and generated nearly $40 million in online sales and grew to over 50 employees and was one of the fastest growing start-ups in 2013. November 2019 David sold Pegasus Fulfillment, to Selery Fulfillment, a Mark Cuban backed company. Pegasus Fulfillment was a company he built with his father Mike Grubbs, which handled inventory warehousing and online order fulfillment for over a dozen different ecommerce businesses including his own. With many startups under his belt David has learned there is a recipe to starting businesses which enables businesses to be launched faster and with less risk. Those hard-learned lessons from nearly two decades were disseminated into a unique Entrepreneurship course he taught at Baylor University with Dr. Kendall Artz and Dr. Les Palich where 12 hand selected students were given funding to start real businesses over the course of a semester. The program was a success and the core of Boss Club's curriculum is based on all the principles taught in that college level course. In his free time David loves flying (as a private pilot), riding horses, scuba diving, reading, learning Spanish, and participating in his church. David lives in a small rural town in Costa Rica and is married to his wife of four years, Daniella, who runs her own not-for-profit equine therapy center to help people with disabilities. Their first son, Sam, was born in 2020. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grayson-mask/support

The Last Boy...the inspiring "Survivor Stories Podcast" that inspired the Broadway-bound play
The stories of entrepreneurial giants who have built something from nothing inspire us: Bernard Goldhirsh of Inc. Magazine, Harry Quadracci of Quad/Graphics, Daniel Lubetsky of the snack company Kind, and Steve Mariotti of Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. The stories of survivors also inspire us. Like those of psychologist Tova Friedman and Sam Solasz of Master Purveyors. Harold Klein, the founder of Teletime Video along with his wife Nan, has interviewed all of them. Now Harold and Nan are expanding the meaning of entrepreneurship and survival to include remarkable people like Vietnam veteran Bill Vandegriff, who has overcome great personal hardship because of his experience as a soldier through his own grit and resilience. In Harold's own family tree, from his grandfather for whom he's named, to his own son Joe, you can see what Dr. Rachel Yehuda of Mt. Sinai has helped to bring to light - how resilience can be literally passed on from generation to generation. That resilience often comes in the form of entrepreneurship. And it often begins with a mentor. Did you know that one of the mentors of the great Martin Luther King's was Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, a figure central to Harold's faith? Steve's conversation with Harold is a profound one, which started on the steps of the 92nd Y after the world premiere of an episode of Harold and Nan's new documentary "Trauma to Triumph...the Rise of the Entrepreneur." Harold's introductory remarks at the premiere, as well as the film, were an epiphany for Steve in how he views Sidney Taussig, the last boy, and his roommates who created their own government, and the longest-running underground publication of the Holocaust. Most of them would not survive, but their magazine of poems and prose does, proving that the entrepreneurial spirit can transcend hate, adversity, and even death. Can entrepreneurship be learned? We'd like to believe it can, since entrepreneurs drive economic growth — creating tomorrow as Per Bylund puts it — and betterment for their individual customers and for society. Emergent circumstances placed Steve Mariotti in the position of teaching entrepreneurship to boys and girls in the nation's toughest high school. After some trial and error, here's what he established. Key Takeaways And Actionable Insights There's a universal desire for the fruits of entrepreneurship. Steve classified this desire as a drive to escape poverty. You are restricted from ownership, and all the feelings of pride and fulfillment that come with it, when you are poor. Ownership — what economists call private property — is an exciting prospect. If entrepreneurship provides a route, people will take it. Steve's innovative entrepreneurship curriculum generated intense excitement. He had difficulty in commanding attention for English and Math, but the same students who resisted conventional learning were stimulated and energized by the subject of entrepreneurship. The open door to learning entrepreneurship is understanding market pricing. Steve started the entrepreneurial journey for students with thinking about pricing of an everyday product — in his case, wristwatches. Why are there so many prices for wristwatches? Why are there so many kinds of wristwatches at different price points? Why is it that one person would pay a high price for one kind of wristwatch and another person would refuse, preferring an alternative at a different price? Just thinking about pricing in this way was a revelation. Thinking about pricing can lead to an understanding of unit economics. Entrepreneurs need to know two prices — the one the buyer will pay and the one that represents their cost. Steve quickly established that this knowledge is harder to establish. Is there a profit in the priced transaction for the entrepreneur once all costs — of time, money, effort and alternatives — are taken into account. This requires an understanding of sourcing and supply chains, wholesalers and vendors, direct and indirect costs and overhead, as well as personal preferences (do you really want to spend all the time and effort that the business will require of you?) High schools are resistant to teaching entrepreneurship, and Steve's students were constrained by regulation and authority. “You may not talk about money in the classroom.” These and other restrictions were typical of the barriers Steve faced – and faced down. Entrepreneurship is one of the most relevant skills to impart to high schoolers, and yet the subject was viewed with disdain. Steve emphasizes practicality as the critical foundation for teaching entrepreneurship. He taught his kids unit economics, profit and loss, simple accounting and the practicalities of starting, growing and managing a business. No theory. Everyone in his class succeeded with a starter business. Many went on to greater entrepreneurial success. Steve has taught entrepreneurship all over the world, and found that culture matters a great deal. In post-communist Russia, young people could not grasp supply and demand, entrepreneurial profit and unit economics. The labor theory of value had been brainwashed into them. In post-communist Vietnam, in contrast, people thronged to his teaching and eagerly pursued all the behavioral changes he advocated, both at the entrepreneurial level and the government administrative level (like adopting low, simple tax schemes). Theirs was a more receptive culture. Additional Resources The role of knowledge in entrepreneurship—"Steve Mariotti Channels F.A. Is teaching entrepreneurship possible and what are the challenges while doing so? In this episode, we're discussing this topic with Dr. Raphael Smals (www.rsmals.nl). We focus on different types of institutions and their approaches in teaching important skills. We specifically look into what skills are necessary for an entrepreneur but not taught at all.
