In Ghana, there's hardly a dish that doesn't include plantains. Deep fried and spicy, they're a key component in Ghanaian cuisine. And hot off the grill, they're also a perfect snack for that special craving.

I wonder if we weren't reading "massage parlors" would the outcry be bigger? I wonder if 8 girls from Harvard had been gunned down, if the headlines would evoke more empathy? I wonder, if it was 8 senators, if the flags would be lowered? Since when do we rate the value of lives lost? Since forever, and that's the problem. Middle passage? Not worthy of remembering. Trail of tears? What's that? Half a million lives lost in a pandemic? Not gonna lower a flag for that. Young women shot? Let's blame them for working in a massage parlor. Think it's not happening? Go back and read the news reports. They have names and families. But what do we read first? "Massage parlor shootings". Violence against women. Violence against Asians. The same systems that did not protect them are the same systems that make Black mommas like me fear for their sons' lives. They are the same systems that cause learning gaps. They are the same systems that allow countless BIPOC women to go missing, ending up in the unsolved cases files of our justice system. While I see my Black American, Kenyan, Vietnamese, Mexican, Guatemalan, El Salvadoran, Haitian, Chinese, Ghanan, students as more than BIPOC students, we all share the same fight. The same systems that started out disenfranchising non-males and non-whites at the founding of this country are the same systems that create inequities in our country today. Black, Indigenous, People of Color are diverse cultures and individuals who should be recognized and celebrated as such. However, we stand in solidarity against hate and against the systems that consistently do not value us. Because as Fannie Lou Hamer says, until everybody's free, nobody's free. #StopAsianHate Visit Hedreich.com for resources and more vignettes and educational strategies. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hedreich/message

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome marketing executive, party promoter and cultural connector Dela Yador to the Upper West Side! Bronx born and raised, Dela discusses meeting hip-hop heroes like Big Pun and DMX, moving from Catholic classes to a public high school and literally fighting for respect, gaining leadership from coaching youth basketball, taking a chance by joining school chorus, and what his Ghanan parents expected from his higher education. Dela talks about heading to Buffalo, New York for college, immediately finding himself on academic probation, returning to school with a more serious outlook, joining student government, finding a passion for promoting parties, linking up with DJ Enuff's Heavy Hitters crew, and fast becoming the big man on campus by bringing Snoop Dogg, Colin Powell, Kanye West, DJ Kast One and others to Buffalo. We get into Dela's return to New York City, his day jobs with VH1, BET, Pernod Ricard, his evenings out at clubs with the Heavy Hitters, and bringing the right mix of people, music and energy together for Opal Fridays. We also dive into the early days of HennyPalooza, his forever bond with Kam McCullough, the infamous iPhone note Dela wrote as an invite, the belief that this was bigger than just a basement game night, the work that each and every player put in, what the 5-year anniversary meant, why certain partnerships didn't work out, and why Dela appreciates the D'usse move. All that, plus Beyonce and Jay-Z as superheroes, why Dela has a reputation for being impossibly late, visiting Ghana in 2017, friends giving haircuts in college, doing good work in Nipsey's image, Dela's exciting new endeavors, which will bring together corporations, culture and youth empowerment, and much more!
Ghana on selkeästi yksi niistä.

Kuten me kaikki karttakirjojen selailijat tiedämme, Hilla on myös kaupunki keskisessä Irakissa noin sata kilometriä Bagdadista etelään. Mistä suomalaisten marjojen nimet on tehty? Sanaston asiantuntija Kirsti Aapala kertoo. Ohjelman ovat toimittaneet Pasi Heikura ja Tuula Viitaniemi.
