Mistrz. Zna młodych starych i starych młodych. A jak widzi Kubę Wojewódzkiego? Jak wspomina swoją mamę? Czy czuje, że byłby jeszcze „większy”, gdyby urodził się w innym kraju? Ta rozmowa jest lekcją nieśmiertelności. Dlaczego? Posłuchajcie, bo naprawdę warto. Podcast WojewódzkiKędzierski ma partnerów komercyjnych. Political Capacity: Gianna Englert on the Liberal Struggle for Democracy

Is democracy sustainable without informed, virtuous, and engaged citizens? Can political institutions shape the kind of citizenry democracy needs? These questions lie at the heart of Democracy Tamed: French Liberalism and the Politics of Suffrage, the compelling new book by political theorist Gianna Englert, who joins us in this episode of RevDem.As contemporary anxieties grow over the future of liberal democracy and the rise of populism, Englert turns our attention to 19th-century France, where liberal thinkers grappled with similar dilemmas in the wake of the French Revolution.Englert reconstructs how a generation of French liberals—including Benjamin Constant, François Guizot, Alexis de Tocqueville, Édouard Laboulaye, and Ernest Duvergier de Hauranne—sought to chart a path toward democraticinclusion that did not compromise their liberal commitments to individual freedom, institutional stability, and rational governance. Central to their efforts was the idea of political capacity: the belief that suffrage should be tied to a citizen's ability to exercise it responsibly. Englert argues that political capacity emerged as a flexible and evolving standard—shaped by France's shifting social and economic realities—which enabled liberals to reconcile democratic expansion with their core political principles. In our conversation, Englert reflects on the transnationalinfluences that shaped this capacitarian discourse, the moral and educational ambitions of liberal reformers, and the ongoing relevance of their ideas in an age of democratic uncertainty. Tune in for a rich exploration of a forgottenliberal tradition that still speaks to the challenges confronting democracy today.

Peter Ware Higgs (29 May 1929 – 8 April 2024) was a British theoretical physicist, professor at the University of Edinburgh, and Nobel laureate in Physics for his work on the mass of subatomic particles. In the 1960s, Higgs proposed that broken symmetry in electroweak theory could explain the origin of mass of elementary particles in general and of the W and Z bosons in particular. This so-called Higgs mechanism, which was proposed by several physicists besides Higgs at about the same time, predicts the existence of a new particle, the Higgs boson, the detection of which became one of the great goals of physics. On 4 July 2012, CERN announced the discovery of the boson at the Large Hadron Collider. The Higgs mechanism is generally accepted as an important ingredient in the Standard Model of particle physics, without which certain particles would have no mass. The discovery of the Higgs boson prompted fellow physicist Stephen Hawking to note that he thought that Higgs should receive the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work, which he finally did, shared with François Englert in 2013. Embark on an intriguing exploration of the financial world's shadowy corners with Stuart Englert, the formidable mind behind "Rigged," as our guide. Stuart chronicles his metamorphosis from a silver market enthusiast to a fearless journalist unearthing the depths of market manipulation. Together, we traverse pivotal historical milestones such as the Bretton Woods Agreement and the strategic removal of silver from U.S. coinage, unveiling the covert ties among bullion banks and central banks that have shaped the modern financial landscape. Our conversation sails into the tumultuous seas of fiat currency and the emerging storm of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). As the dollar's supremacy is tested by international contenders, we dissect the geopolitical currents that could redefine the essence of money itself. Stuart's insights illuminate the dark corners of CBDCs—the risks they pose to personal freedom and the potential for a surveillance state. We also entertain the tantalizing notion of whether gold and silver can reclaim their thrones in a world where paper currency's value ebbs away. The episode culminates with a keen examination of gold and silver's roles in an ever-evolving monetary system. We scrutinize the historical tug-of-war over these precious metals, from the Hunt brothers' infamous silver play to the grassroots movements calling for their recognition as legal tender. We ponder the possibility of a monumental economic reset, where silver's technological and military applications may eclipse its monetary worth. Before parting, I reflect on the indispensable truths laid bare in "Rigged" and express my eagerness for listeners to join us on this revelatory journey through the world of finance, where the predatory nature of bulls and bears makes the wisdom of the wolf ever more valuable.

Israel's assault on Gaza has led to a huge upsurge in discussion of settler colonialism and the extent to which the term accurately describes the Zionist project in Palestine. In Settler Colonialism: An Introduction, Sai Englert provides an authoritative overview of the history of settler colonialism and resistance to it, from the South African anti-Apartheid struggle to campaigns against pipeline construction in North America. In the interview we discuss the history of settler colonialism, from the British colonies in North America to the Portuguese Empire in Brazil, and from Apartheid South Africa to the French settler state in Algeria. We talked about the economic logics that made genocidal campaigns against indigenous societies possible in some contexts, but not in others, and about the surprisingly complex process of racialisation that enabled the plunder of indigenous resources and labour. Finally, we discussed why Israel, contrary to the claims of liberal apologists, belongs firmly in the settler colonial tradition.
