My guest in this edition is Jeff Hardin, Ph.D., professor and former chair of the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Wisconsin. He holds a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from the International School of Theology. In addition to his scholarly work in cell biology and leading textbook on this topic, Jeff has thought much about the intersection of faith and science and regularly addresses these topics in public forums. In this podcast we discuss: How Jeff got interested in studying biology The value of exploring various ideas, and noticing God in the process How, as a biologist, he benefits from inter-disciplinary conversations What career opportunities are available with a degree in the biological sciences How to zero in on the area of biology you are interested in How he has connected studying biology with his faith, and how he has thrived as a result Some challenges of being a biologist and a Christian How he seeks to reveal God in his work as a biologist Thoughts on how Christians can think about evolution and creation The role of understanding ethics and broader worldview and religious commitments in studying the biological sciences Character qualities/traits that are good indicators that a student will flourish studying the biological sciences The overlap of God's call for us to care for His creation and current conversations in the biological sciences The importance for Christians to thoughtfully engage with the biology of neuroscience The importance for Christians to thoughtfully engage with the worldview, ethics, and practice of genome editing The growing conversation around “trans-humanism” that will become increasingly important in discussions in the biological sciences God's grace for those called to study the biological sciences The value of joining a professional society in the biological sciences, and connecting with other Christians in the field at the society's meetings What Jeff wished his 18-year-old self knew about majoring in the biological sciences Why it is important for biologists also to study things outside the biological sciences The importance of finding other Christians in the biological sciences, and how to find them Resources mentioned during our conversation: The Isthmus Society C. Are science and religion compatible? Should there be any crossover whatsoever? Why is it dangerous when we try to make our science fit into our religion? These are questions that Randy and Kyle chat about in our latest episode. Kyle strongly thinks that science and religion are in completely different categories and should almost never mix. Randy like the "almost" in that statement. The guys really, honestly tried to have a debate in this episode...we'll see if they were successful. The resources mentioned in this episode are:Rocks of Ages: Science and Religion in the Fullness of Life by Stephen Jay GouldThe Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Francis CollinsThe whiskey we tasted in this episode is the outstanding (for the price) Smoke and Sea by Oppidan.Content note: this episode contains some mild profanity.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. This week, Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, announced that he would retire at the end of the year. An evangelical Christian who previously worked as the head of the Human Genome Project, Collins' 2009 appointment still drew scorn. From a 2010 profile in the New Yorker: Collins read in the Times that many of his colleagues in the scientific community believed that he suffered from “dementia.” Steven Pinker, a cognitive psychologist at Harvard, questioned the appointment on the ground that Collins was “an advocate of profoundly anti-scientific beliefs.” P. Z. Myers, a biologist at the University of Minnesota at Morris, complained, “I don't want American science to be represented by a clown.” Nevertheless, Collins served under three presidential administrations. During the pandemic, Collins has spoken out a number of times in his efforts to dispel misconceptions about the virus and vaccine. Prior to his term at the NIH, Collins was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also wrote the best-selling book, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, which won a CT Book Award. Elaine Howard Ecklund joined global media manager Morgan Lee and editorial director Ted Olsen to discuss Collins's legacy in the scientific and Christian communities. What is Quick to Listen? Faith and science are often pitted against each other in our culture. If you love science, many assume, you can't be a person of faith. If you're a person of faith, others assume, you should be wary of science. This Sunday Pastor Jeff begins a new sermon series on faith and science inspired by Dr. Francis Collin's best-selling book “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief.” Collins is one of the world's most renowned scientists and led the Human Genome Project. This Sunday we explore the origins of the cosmos and the Big Bang Theory.
Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., is the Director of the National Institutes of Health, and the only presidentially appointed director to serve more than one administration. In this role, Dr. Collins oversees the work of the largest supporter of biomedical research in the world, spanning the spectrum from basic to clinical research. A pioneer gene hunter, Dr. Collins led the Human Genome Project from 1993 until 2008. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007, and the National Medal of Science in 2009 for his revolutionary contributions to genetic research. In addition to his numerous scientific achievements, Dr. Collins also has a longstanding interest in the interface between science and faith and is the author of The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief. I have been a fan of Dr. Collins since I first read his book in medical school, and given his role in the response to COVID-19, I was curious to learn more about his insights on how we can bring the pandemic to an end. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, from how the COVID-19 vaccine works, the impact of Long COVID, how lifestyle and precision medicine can play a role in the prevention of disease, and how Dr. Collins reconciles his faith in God with his role as a scientist. *Dr. Collin's bio adapted from the NIH website You can connect with the National Institutes of Health via Instagram @nihgov Resources: To find a vaccine near you visit vaccines.gov or text your ZIP code to 438829 All Of Us Research Project BioLogos Foundation Related Episodes: Ep 185 - Daryl Cajon on CrossFit after COVID Ep 164 - Boosting Immunity and Reducing COVID Risk with Dr. Aseem Malhotra If you like this episode, please subscribe to Pursuing Health on iTunes and give it a rating or share your feedback on social media using the hashtag #PursuingHealth. In the opinion of this podcaster, Dr. Francis Collins is one of the greatest Americans who has ever lived. He is director of the National Institutes of Health, and is Dr. Anthony Fauci’s boss! This episode briefly traces his birth in Staunton, education, and growth as a scientist. The majority of the podcast is made up of the actual voices of President Clinton and Dr. Collins speaking at the White House regarding game-changing findings from the Human Genome Project. (We’re talking potential cures for cancer and Alzheimers here!)Sources include The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief and The Language of Life: DNA and the Revolution in Personalized Medicine by Dr. Francis Frances Collins,

The man at the forefront of finding a vaccine for the COVID-19 pandemic, is man of science AND faith. Dr. Francis Collins is the head of the National Institutes of Health which is racing to develop treatment options and a vaccine for the Coronavirus. He is also this year's winner of the prestigious Templeton Prize, awarded to those making great strides in the area of science and faith. And Collins is in fact a walking embodiment that faith and science are a good team. He says while science has the tools to be able to dissect and observe the working of a cell or the age of the universe, it is not so good at answering questions that start with "why?" like "why am I here?" Dr. Collins is the author of several books including the best-seller "The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for God. (2006)" He also led the team of the National Genome Project, that 20 years ago mapped out the human genetic code, a 3 billion letter DNA sequence living in each human cell. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Collins talks about the urgency of finding a vaccine for the Coronavirus, as a second wave of cases emerge and spike. But Collins has good news. He says, "We now have a number of those [vaccines] that look pretty promising" in early phase one trials with a small number of people, and "we're ready to start in July, the large scale trials to find out whether these really are protective and safe." And he says he would like to offer people hope about the pandemic: "God is still in charge. And we're going to get through this."
On this our sixth episode Matthew Jacoby and DJ Paine dive into the first chapter of Genesis and look at the ORIGIN of ALL THINGS. Creation and Evolution. This week on Skepticality, Swoopy talks with geneticist Dr. George C. Cunningham, author of Decoding the Language of God: Can a Scientist Really Be a Believer? This book serves as a point-by-point rebuttal of the 2006 bestseller The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, by Dr. Francis S. Collins. Dr. Collins was the head of the Human Genome Project during its final phases, presiding over one of the greatest scientific achievements of all time. And yet, some skeptics expressed unease about Dr. Collins' 2009 appointment as the Director of the National Institutes of Health. At issue were the award-winning geneticist's beliefs that our "genetic code is, after all, God’s instruction book" — and that God himself does not need an explanation since he is beyond the universe. In this interview, Dr. Cunningham respectfully questions the proof Dr. Collins offers for his beliefs, including the Bible and the writings of C.S. Lewis. Additionally, Decoding the Language of God serves as a primer for good critical thinking, discussing points of conflict between naturalistic explanations of reality (which are anchored in scientific research) and supernatural interpretations (which are not). Cunningham's well-reasoned discussion will appeal to people across a wide spectrum of belief and unbelief.
Francis Collins is one of the world's leading scientists. He has been the longtime head of the Human Genome Project, the groundbreaking international effort to map and sequence all of the human DNA and then determine its functions. The Project is widely considered the most significant scientific undertaking of our time. A devout religious believer, Dr. Collins brings a unique perspective on the compatibility of science with religion, which he explores in his recent book The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief. In this conversation with D.J. Grothe, Francis Collins details the potential benefits of recent advances in the field of genetics, explores the question of whether or not religious belief negatively impacts a scientist's research, and talks about his journey from atheism to devout believer. He talks about the comforts that religion brings to a believer, and how the question of the origins of morality was central to his religious conversion. He also offers challenges to recent arguments against belief in God, to "fundamentalist atheism," and to atheistic bias among the scientific community, while also offering "theistic evolution" as an alternative to both atheistic evolution and Intelligent Design creationism.
