Dr. Shannen Dee Williams is Associate Professor of History at the University of Dayton. She is an award-winning scholar of the African American experience and Black Catholicism with research and teaching specializations in women's, religious, and Black freedom movement history. Dr. Williams holds a B.A. in history with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors from Agnes Scott College, a M.A. in Afro-American studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Ph.D. in history from Rutgers University. The first Black woman elected to the Executive Council of the American Catholic Historical Association, Dr. Williams is a co-founder the Fleming-Morrow Endowment in African American History at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. In 2020, Williams also submitted successful proposals to establish the Mother Mary Lange Lecture in Black Catholic History at Villanova University and the Cyprian Davis, O.S.B. Prize through the American Catholic Historical Association and the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism. A lifelong Catholic, Dr. Williams authored the award-winning column, The Griot's Cross, for the Catholic New Service from 2020 to 2022. For most people, Whoopi Goldberg's performance as Sister Mary Clarence in Sister Act is the dominant interpretation of an African American nun and the desegregation of white Catholic sisterhood in the United States. In this presentation, Dr. Shannen Dee Williams will explore the story of America's real sister act: the story of how generations of Black women and girls called to the sacred vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience fought against racism, sexism, and exclusion to become and minster as consecrated women of God in the Roman Catholic Church. In so doing, she will turn attention to women's religious life as a stronghold of white supremacy and racial segregation, and thus an important battleground in the long African American freedom struggle. Dr. Williams will also illuminate Thomas Merton's connections to Black sisters' largely suppressed history.

Mike Church thanks Second Line Brewery for revealing that they treat Catholics as second class citizens. Mike Church and Joe Kite, the Big Easy Conservative, reveal how another company feels justified to discriminate against Catholics and fully embrace the libtard left. EPISODE 216: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) BULLETIN: It's the Smoking Gun, and it's still smoking! After the drama of the original revelation of the "Bedminster Tape," a further shocking bit of news. The Guardian reports that on the tape Trump is heard lamenting that he DID NOT declassify the Mark Milley Iran document. This ratchets up Trump's self-incrimination. “For several minutes of the audio recording, the sources said, Trump talks about how he cannot discuss the document because he no longer possesses the sweeping presidential power to declassify, now out of office, but suggests that he should have done so when he was still in the White House.” Thus on the tape he discusses the document… that he says… he cannot legally discuss. EPISODE 214: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Now it's a CONSPIRACY to obstruct justice - within Mar-a-Lago and within the larger Obstruction. After two reports Tuesday, it's clear Trump may have had a team of aides and a box-moving guy who were literally playing hide-and-go-see with stolen classified documents, shifting them from place to place, and trying to burn the security video OF them shifting them from place to place, in order to keep the FBI from finding them, in order to keep the DOJ from getting them, and in order to prevent even his own lawyer from knowing about them. The newest stuff: The Washington Post reports that guy who helped Trump valet Walt Nauta move the boxes full of stolen classified documents at Mar-a-Lago is now suspected of then trying to find out from the Mar-a-Lago IT guy how you could get rid of security video at, say, Mar-a-Lago, showing, hypothetically, a guy who helped move boxes full of stolen classified documents. And not just that but that Trump's primary Mar-a-Lago lawyer told Jack Smith's Grand Jury that HE was told to search for the classified documents the DOJ and FBI wanted IN a storage room. And when he asked if he should search anywhere else – like in Trump's Office – he was “steered away” and “waved off” and Trump's office, of course, is where the FBI ultimately FOUND the MOST sensitive of the documents when it came back a month later. 5 Things In 15 Minutes The Podcast: Bringing Good Vibes to DEI
This week I was in a series of meetings with a client, leading them through our Inclusive 360 assessment process. Our assessment is extremely granular, breaking down DEI into a series of small tactics, across all functions. As part of the process, we put employees in small group meetings and go through the assessment questions. One leader repeatedly used the phrase “not yet” when answering my questions – not yet because we're at the beginning of this process. Not yet because they're learning, still understanding the current state of affairs. Not yet – but they're excited about it. They're ready to do better as soon as they know better. It's coming from leadership. Not yet, but the tactics are bite-sized. They're doable. They're cumulatively impactful but many are small enough to generate momentum through quick wins.So while we may start with “not yet”, I believe in the power of forward momentum, the kind that can come from a cross-functional approach. Celebrate the quick wins and keep going. This Week's Good Vibes:Disneyland Rebuilds Mickey's Toontown From The Ground Up For Kids Of All AbilitiesThousands of Catholic Nuns Unite to ‘Wholeheartedly' Declare Trans People Are Beloved by GodCompanies That Get ‘Woke' Aren't Going Broke — They're More Profitable Than EverBeau Jo's Is Selling His Famous Colorado Pizza Shop — To His EmployeesBBC Education Show in Afghanistan Helps Children Banned From SchoolCall to action:Planning an event or meeting in a state with anti-diversity laws or bills? Megan Rose, Ph.D. shares how to have an intimate relationship with otherworldly beings in her new book Spirit Marriage. Exploring the phenomenon of the spirit spouse or spirit lover--an entity to which a human is psychically bonded--Megan Rose, Ph.D., examines the practice and purpose of spirit marriage around the world, presenting transcultural evidence of this form of sacred union in anthropological research, religious literature, mythology, folklore, and the oral tradition. She shares her in-depth interviews with ten contemporary practitioners of spirit marriage, including a Faery Seer, a Shakta Tantric, a West African Shrine Keeper, a New Orleans Voodoo Mambo, Haitian Vodou practitioners, and a ceremonial magician. Through these respectful interviews, the spirit-marriage practitioners tell their stories of initiation and having a spouse who is both otherworldly and able to assist in waking-world activities. In addition, they offer intimate insight into this growing global practice and its larger evolutionary purpose. We learn about their experiences of first contact, the decision to marry, how their community upholds the relationship, and the impact on their other relationships. We also learn about the risks and challenges, as well as one example of divorcing a spirit. Sharing her personal experience, the author discusses in detail her marriage, including the erotic nature of being "spirit-filled" and her encounters with her Faery beloved. She explains how to cultivate a marriage to a spirit, sharing precautions and practices to spiritually prepare yourself, interpret your paranormal encounters, and navigate the potential challenges of this type of marriage. We talk about Possible dangers and rewards of spirit marriageCalling on ancestors, ascended masters, angels, and beloved deadHow the Pentecostal Chruch helped her to open up to this type of marriageHow to obtain a spiritual divorce if you have a change of heartProtection from trickstersDefinition of a Spirit MarriageDifference between Spirit Marriage and Spirit contactSpirit Marriage can be similar to Catholic Nuns' God-spousing Megan Rose, Ph.D., has a doctorate in East-West psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies and a master's degree in religion in society from the Graduate Theological Union. In Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle (Duke UP, 2022), Shannen Dee Williams, provides the first full history of Black Catholic nuns in the United States, hailing them as the forgotten prophets of Catholicism and democracy. Drawing on oral histories and previously sealed Church records, Williams demonstrates how master narratives of women's religious life and Catholic commitments to racial and gender justice fundamentally change when the lives and experiences of African American nuns are taken seriously. For Black Catholic women and girls, embracing the celibate religious state constituted a radical act of resistance to white supremacy and the sexual terrorism built into chattel slavery and segregation. Williams shows how Black sisters—such as Sister Mary Antona Ebo, who was the only Black member of the inaugural delegation of Catholic sisters to travel to Selma, Alabama, and join the Black voting rights marches of 1965—were pioneering religious leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, desegregation foot soldiers, Black Power activists, and womanist theologians. In the process, Williams calls attention to Catholic women's religious life as a stronghold of white supremacy and racial segregation—and thus an important battleground in the long African American freedom struggle. Allison Isidore is the Assistant Director for the American Catholic Historical Association and is an Instructor of Record for the Religious Studies department at the University of Alabama. Her research interest is focused on the twentieth-century American Civil Rights Movement and the Catholic Church's response to racism, and the participation of Catholic clergy, nuns, and laypeople in marches, sit-ins, and kneel-ins during the 1950s and 1960s. Looking at Catholic history and Black history becomes wildly different when you consider and acknowledge Black nuns. Not only have there been Black nuns since the early days of slavery, these women have been agitating and advocating all the while. It is a history that hasn't gotten the benefit of a full survey until now, with the book Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle by my guest Dr. Shannen Dee Williams. Black nuns provided some of the earliest schools for both free and enslaved Black children. They wielded celibacy as a weapon of bodily autonomy. And, for decades before Brown v Board, they desegregated Catholic schools and Catholic orders. It was a fight within the Church, until the Civil Rights Movement. Then, Black nuns became the visible vanguard of freedom that they still are today. I didn't know about Black nuns, and now I know that their history matters. Did you know there was a difference between a nun and a sister? They are often used interchangeable today but they do have a distinction. I had no idea! In this episode we go over the process, the requirements, and the day-to-day life of a nun. It takes 9-12 years to become a fully-fledged nun... definitely not something to rush into! "ROME—“Marie” was placed in a French Catholic boarding school for “young girls from good families” when she was in the fifth grade. She remembers a nun who would come to her class every day to choose a student to help her with Mass. But the nun wasn't looking for someone to help her. She was looking for a victim. “I was 11 and looked 9. She would choose me once every two or three times,” she recalls. “She would take me to her office, lock the door, and then draw the curtains. After which she would put me on her knees to make me read the gospel according to Saint Paul or another saint, while she squeezed me with one hand to her chest and pulled down my panties with the other hand. We were of course in pleated skirts and not in pants. It terrified me and paralyzed.” “Marie” couldn't talk to her devout Catholic parents about the abuse until a friend convinced her to do so. The result, she says, was catastrophic. “You are really a pervert, a vicious liar. How dare you say such things?” her parents told her. In fact, her parents had told the nuns that she was being sent to boarding school because she needed to be tamed. “I was truly [a gift] for this nun... because she knew full well that she did not risk anything.” The abuse lasted the whole year. At the age of 35, “Marie” told her mother again about the abuse. “My mother blissfully told me that it was impossible for a nun to whom she entrusted her daughter to abuse a girl,” she says. “Female pedophilia exists and unfortunately the media never talk about it.” “Marie” was certainly not alone. Dozens of other victims of priests, nuns, and Catholic school personnel in France form the basis of a 2,500-page report released Tuesday by a special commission led by Jean-Marc Sauvé. While 80 percent of the victims were young boys between the ages of 10 and 13, many young girls were abused as well, and not only by priests. Nuns used crucifixes to rape little girls or forced boys to have sex with them, too." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support
Do you ever wonder how some people seem so sure and clear about their decisions? Do you admire people who seem to “stay true” to themselves? People that are in tune with their decisions and identity are usually people who intentionally choose what to care about. You can do the same thing. What you choose to care about becomes your values. Your values allow you to align with the way you would like to show up in the world, including your Life Calling. Today, we'll discuss how values empower your life. Your values are your nonnegotiables. Since values reflect your priority belief, these values influence your presence in the world. To choose one value means you measure them against other values, and choose your preference. In this case, you select the values that best fit your life. Now, this doesn't make other values incorrect, the need to choose is to have a reason or a gut feeling behind your own decisions. Friend, I will tell you that once you realize your values, you'll start to notice your set of priority beliefs differ when the setting changes. Different values govern different parts of our life. In a separate setting, you may find your priorities shifting include work, family, or personal time. Context determines how your values are on display. Despite your values responding to the context you find yourself in, your Life Calling remains the same. Each setting, role, or participation is you living your Life Calling in different contexts. You empower your calling by having clarity of your priority beliefs, or values. In today's episode, learn how you can identify a value, how to build awareness about what is important to you, and why your overarching life calling inspires your values. Another thing friend, there's an exciting event coming up! You can gain more actionable insights about Life Calling on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at the Life Calling Virtual Summit with Bob Goff. Pastor Baker discusses theological distinctions between Law & Gospel with guest Pastor Wes Reimnitz. Today's rumination topic is Roman Catholic nuns and LGBTQ lifestyle.
“Nothing can do men of good will more harm than apparent compromises with parties (political) that subscribe to anti–moral and anti–Democratic and anti-God forces. We must have the courage to detach our support from men (and women) who are doing evil. We must bear them no hatred, but we must break with them.”The straightforward, uncompromising words of former Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, no longer among us. Archbishop Sheen had his own television program some decades ago. It was avidly watched by Catholics and indeed some non–Catholics as well. Sheen was powerful, straightforward, deeply concerned with right and truth and a real champion of the Roman Catholic Church. This powerful institution, not really what it once was, needs more men, more leaders, men and women for that matter to truly champion the truth, the right and all things moral. It, like all religious institutions, needs men and women like Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Here his profound and straightforward words again:“Nothing can do men (and women) of good will more harm than apparent compromises with parties (political) that subscribe to anti–moral and anti–Democratic and anti–God forces.”Sheen was deeply concerned with compromise. If there is truth, absolute truth, it can NOT be compromised. It is what it is, it speaks for itself, it cannot be interpreted and it must be fully observed and respected. And if, said Archbishop Sheen, there comes a political party which “subscribes” to anti–moral, anti–Democratic and anti–God forces, all Roman Catholics, and in fact all people of faith: “MUST BREAK WITH THEM.”And there has come that time, that party in our beloved America. It is here, and it is now. They are the progressives, the radicals, the anti–Americans who continue to call themselves: THE DEMOCRAT PARTY.Former Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson and Jimmy Carter among others would be stunned, shocked and disengaged from the conduct, beliefs, platforms and promises of the current Democrat party. That led one Catholic political pundit to state: “This (the Democrats) is no longer your daddy's democratic party.”And is that ever an understatement. It is nothing at all, absolutely nothing like the pro American Democrats of old. Anti–Catholicism existed at the very beginning of the immigration of Catholics to America in the early 1800s. There was, to be sure and unfortunately so, considerable bias against them. Not as people are human beings, but because they were Roman Catholic. Prejudice was everywhere. But, through the decades, it ameliorated and although there were always differences between Protestant and Catholic, and of course people of other religions and faiths, and there are today, a gentle tolerance replaced hostility and animosity and those differences were confronted peacefully, with discourse and dialogue, with charitable conduct and not, NOT with hostility or political attacks. And then came Obama in 2008. Barack Hussein Obama and Joe Biden (remember him?) came to power in 2008 following the lazy years of the George W. Bush Administration with influence and control over the House and Senate, Obamacare, THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT was passed and became the law, the medical law of our great country. Many think and many more know that this law as implemented was an absolute disaster and continues to be so. But the law and its nefarious provisions were aggressively implemented by Obama and company and no matter the effect, forced upon all Americans. It was supported by political untruths (if you like your present medical coverage, you can keep it) and implemented by those who were anti–capitalist and most importantly, anti–religion. They cared little or nothing about the First Amendment and the so called first freedom: FREEDOM OF RELIGION!Obamacare mandated that employers provide contraceptives to their employees as part of medical insurance. Abortive fasciant – contraceptives were required and the right of all employees who wished to take advantage of them, so said Obama and company. The rules for such were developed by the Departments for Health and Human Services, the Labor Department and the Treasury Department. Contraceptives were required free of charge and abortion–causing drugs were fully legal and to be paid for by insurance. Many millions objected but few if any stood up. EXCEPT, of all things Catholic Nuns. These nuns were known as: THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR SAINTS PETER AND PAUL HOMEin Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When Pennsylvania tried to force these sweet little ladies, as Joe Biden calls them, to provide contraceptives and abortive fasciants to their employees, the nuns objected and refused, God bless them. They sued the once great state of Pennsylvania. They got to the Supreme Court, which took their case, the landmark case known as:LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR SAINTS PETER AND PAUL HOME v. PENNSYLVANIAThe fight was on for morality, freedom and all things pro Christian. The plaintiff LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR are a group of Catholic nuns who sacrifice all worldly possessions to care for the sick and elderly. This uncompromising Catholic group, began their fight with the government in 2011 when the Affordable Care Act required employees to cover all FDA approved contraceptives in their PRIVATE health plans. Religious groups like THE LITTLE SISTERS were not exempted even as churches were. The Sisters asked the U.S. Supreme Court to respect their right to moral and religious freedom. Again, the Supreme Court took the case. The case was heard in its own right and also as a result of the Trump Administration putting forth regulations in 2017 and 2018 which expanded EXEMPTIONS for employers with good faith objections, religious and moral based objections, founded upon the First Amendment to furnishing and paying for all such. Ministers had been exempt but not other legitimate organizations which had sincerely held moral or religious objections to the Obamacare abortive fasciant – contraceptive mandate. Now, they were under the new Trump Administration regulations. Both the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey objected and aggressively entered in to the litigation, defending their objections that no such exemption was legal or constitutional. Then came the decision from the nine Supreme Court Justices. Seven Justices, joining in an opinion by Justice Clarence Thomas and others, ruled that the exemptions for religious organizations and for businesses with “SINCERE MORAL” objections were in fact exempted from the mandate and could not be forced to provide the coverage required by the Affordable Care Act. With the liberal–skewing current bent of the Supreme Court, it is indeed amazing or perhaps even divinely inspired that the Court came to this conclusion and with such a large majority. Normally predictable liberal-skewing Justices Kagan and Breyer sided with the five other so called Justices Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch in favor of this exemption for religious organizations and for businesses with “sincere moral objections.” There are two liberal, ultra–liberal Supreme Court Justices who vote virtually 100% of the time for radical liberal results in virtually every case, namely Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor. They often appear on record as crusaders rather than jurists. They were completely against the opinion, really the opinions of the majority seven. But the LITTLE SISTERS won, a major victory for these sweet little ladies (Biden) who really had more muscle and political clout than old Joe realized. All of us, and all organizations, and all businesses who hold these SINCERE MORAL BELIEFS should be absolutely delighted with the results and we should thank these Catholic Nuns and those who represent them for pursuing this legal victory since 2011 (9 long years), at least for now. If Biden wins the presidency and the Democrats win House and Senate, you can be certain that this exemption will be done away with either by legislation or executive order and back they go, these LITTLE SISTERS to court. The hostility on the part of DEMOCRATS for anything religious, for any beliefs or convictions sincerely and morally held is palpable and will become the full law of the land as the Democrats will. It is hard to believe that any person of faith, especially Catholic, could vote for the Democrats knowing what they stand for and what they feel about and will do to anything RELIGIOUS. These are scary times. If you like we believe in the Constitution and the freedoms of the First Amendment including and especially Freedom of Religion, you should be deeply concerned should the Democrats win. But there is a matter of six weeks to make sure that doesn't happen and to abide by the pungent and poignant words of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen referring to anti–moral and anti–God parties and politicians, like modern day Democrats: “WE MUST BREAK WITH THEM!”And we must break with these modern–day Democrats if we wish to preserve our First Amendment rights to Freedom of Religion. WE MUST!Today, the Catholics. Tomorrow, Evangelicals, and Jews, and perhaps finally Muslims although they would be last, and then all people of faith. It is the avowed goal of Democrats to excise religion from the public square, out of politics and out of power. It is happening and it will continue to happen, of that you can be sure. So I say to you my fellow Americans, my fellow Christians, and all people of faith, you cannot and you should not vote: DEMOCRAT.That of course is a blunt, aggressive, highly opinionated point of view but one which I believe to be extremely accurate, based on current fact, and an understanding of what the democratic party platform will yield and what its aggressive, anti–constitutional politicians and leaders will do if in power, and especially FULL POWER. It would be the end, THE END my fellow Americans of the freedoms we have enjoyed for 240 years and so often taken for granted. THE END!So I reiterate the words of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen with which I most fully agree describing without knowing the current Democrat Party 2020: WE (THE PEOPLE OF FAITH) MUST BREAK WITH THEM!That means don't vote for them. That means keep them out of power and let them do no further harm to our Constitution and our religious way of life. For, under their control and power, those freedoms will be lost, and once lost: GONE FOREVER!
The Keys to Growing Young Can friendship, optimism, and kindness help you live to 100? Marta Zaraska, author of Growing Young joins The Retirement Wisdom Podcast to explain how the research indicates it can through the mind-body connection. We discuss with Marta: What inspired her to write Growing Young Where some of us may be overinvesting and underinvesting based on scientific research on longevity How optimism and pessimism may affect longevity Why superfoods, supplements and "quick fixes" aren't the wise moves to make Her favorite stories from her travels and experiments while researching her book Which things lower and which things raise mortality risk based on the research, including a few that may surprise you Lessons that may be helpful in quarantine What Longevity Habits to create __________________________ Wise Quotes On Optimism "There is so much research showing that optimism can add anywhere from four to 10 years of life. The number 10 years keeps reappearing in studies over and over. For example, Catholic Nuns, which are perfect groups of study because, you know, they all live in basically the same environment, their whole lives, especially those who entered very, very young. And there was a study exactly like that. They eat the same thing. They wake up at the same hour, they live in the same place doing exactly the same things. And there was one famous study that analyzed their diaries and those who are using the most cheerful language, the most optimistic language outlasted those who are using very gloomy, pessimistic words in the writing by exactly about 10 years. And the same was shown, for example, on autobiographies of famous psychologists on even the orangutans in zoos, you know, when they are evaluated by the zookeepers. Those who have the most cheerful, outgoing personalities outlive the more pessimistic, gloomy orangutans by 10 years as well. So it keeps coming back to the 10 years." On Longevity Habits "When I think about diet and exercise, which again, are still important, but it's very much inward-looking. So it's very much an 'all about me' kind of thing - my body, my diet, my exercise. But when I think about those soft longevity habits, it's more about looking outwards outside of yourself. I'm thinking about other people. So, when you wake up, just think: What can I do for others today? How can I be nicer? How can I contribute to my neighborhood, to my family? How can I be nice to my partner or to my neighbors or to my friends? - things like that. Very, very simple, but this is a change of perspective. And I think that this can make a tremendous difference. Of course, there are very practical suggestions in my book as well. For example, do more things in synchrony with others. On Synchrony "There is an amazing effect with synchrony actually has an asset. For example, when we do things in sync with others, that boosts of those social hormones that we get out of it is actually double. So for example, when you dance with other people and when you sing with them, it makes you feel connected. And it releases all the social hormones that have beneficial health effects for you, such as endorphins, which are natural painkillers. But when you do it in synchrony, the effects are doubled. So for example, chorus singing or line dancing is kind of my career. So there are very, very practical tips out there as well for people to try." __________________________ Bio Marta Zaraska is a science journalist whose work has been published in The Washington Post, Scientific American, New Scientist, and The Atlantic. In today’s modern vernacular Arabic, the word ‘Hijab’ refers to a ‘headscarf.’ Yet in classical Arabic and the language of the Holy Quran, Hijab refers to a physical curtain, a screen, a partition, or a barrier, that separates one from others when they stood behind a curtain. The one that is being covered by or that is found behind the Hijab is not only covering their head and whole body but also the space around them as they stand behind a curtain, a screen, a partition, or a barrier. According to the Holy Quran, this covering was an extra layer of coverage required to be worn only by Prophet Muhammad’s wives “…And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts...” (Quran 33:53) Not only did the Prophet’s wives have to cover their heads and body, but they were required to place a cover or a curtain in front of them to conceal their space when speaking to people other than their mahram (a person whom that individual may not marry because of their close blood relationship such as a brother, uncle, nephew, etc..). The Almighty gave additional rules of etiquette pertaining to how one should speak to the wives of the Prophet peace be upon him, dictating that there should stand a physical separation of the noble Women from the common folk, by a barrier that would be opaque, not see-thru, and impenetrable. It provided an extra layer of privacy and is simultaneously a symbol of their high status and dignity. It’s essential to express that the classic meaning of the term ‘Hijab’ in the Holy Quran is not the same as how we understand and use the term today. The wearing of the Hijab was not required by anyone other than the Prophet’s wives, as is outlined in the Holy Quran. As for all other Muslim women, the Quran explicitly instructs that women should wear a headscarf in a different verse. "And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed" (Quran 24:31) The Holy Quran uses the word ‘Khamar’ to refer to a headscarf—that which covers your head. The word Khamar comes from a root word which means to cover something. The word Khamar is similar to the Arabic word Kha’mir which is the word for alcohol, as alcohol impairs one’s intellect---one cannot think straight while under the influence of alcohol, as it creates a barrier between the mind and the power of speech and reasoning. God states in his Book to tell the believing women to wear their Khomar (the plural of Khamar) over their bosom as in throwing their shawl over and cover their chest area. So, besides covering one’s chest, the head should be covered too—as the covering of the head is already implied by the use of the word Khomar in this Verse. So, the essentials of the Khamar dictate that the hair is covered, and that cloth cover the chest of the women. Whereas generally the women of the days of the Prophet peace be upon him would wear headscarves, some of them would push their veils back exposing their chest area. So, God commanded them to cover their chest as well. Besides covering the head, neck, and chest area, God instructs the believing Muslim woman to throw unto themselves a Jilbab—which references a loose outer garment which does not define their body shape and conceal their beauty. This is regarding a situation in which a Muslimah leaves her home or is in the presence of those who are not her Mahram. "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful" (Quran 33:59) Because these Verses in the Holy Quran are explicit and direct, no disagreements or disputes have been posed to this edict by representatives of Islamic scholarship in the past; unless it concerns whether women should also cover their face and feet. The primary reason why a Muslim woman wears the Hijab can be attributed to a Muslima’s belief that her true purpose in life is to worship God the Almighty according to His instructions; as revealed in God’s final Revelation to mankind, the Holy Quran and through the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, the final Messenger of God. God made the wearing of the Hijab an obligation and instructed the believing women to wear the head covering in the Holy Quran. So, wearing it is an act of righteousness and an act of obedience to God. A Muslim woman wears the Hijab to gain the pleasure of her Master. It is the core teaching of Islam that whatever God instructs one to do; it is always best for them to follow the instruction—whether or not one may understand the logic behind it or not. A Muslim woman trusts God and does whatever He instructs her to do, believing that it is best for her, as God knows what’s best for her more than she knows herself. God is the Creator of everything and is All-Knowing, All-Wise. Only when she submits to God and obeys His commands, does she reap the benefits and feel tranquility and contentment of life; as she knows that God is pleased with her. By focusing on and submitting to the demands of God, she is set free and is no longer a slave to and prisoner of society’s pressures and desires. “Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do" (Quran 16:97) Islam stresses the relationship between the body and the mind. In covering her body, a Muslim woman shields her heart from spiritual impurities. A Muslim woman wears the Hijab to uphold Islam’s code of modesty. Islam’s code of modesty extends to all aspects in one’s life, including their dress and how they carry themselves. A Muslim’s clothing is an outer manifestation of inner purity, beauty, and humility, as wearing the Hijab embodies moral conduct, character, manners, and speech. A Muslim woman guards her modesty and does not attract unnecessary attention from people, such as a second look, admiration, praise, or sexual attraction from those other than her husband. Whereas attention from others may boost one’s ego for a short period, a Muslim woman acknowledges that this attention might lead to consequences in the long term, such as jealousy from others, envy, competition, affairs, being a bad role model for children, and possibly a marriage break-up; as we see all so often in the west and around the world where dressing immodestly is common. A Muslim woman boasts the trait of Hayaa’ (modesty, bashfulness, and a sense of shame) within her and values her beauty, so she veils herself as the Hijab diverts attention away from her and conceals and protects the Muslimah. God also instructs women to lower their gaze when the opposite gender is present, which shows the trait of Haya. “And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts (by being chaste)…” (Quran 24:31) A Muslima is honored in Islam and Sharia (Islamic Law). Islam elevates the one that covers herself, safeguarding her integrity by not allowing herself to be treated as a sexual object; to be valued and judged externally based solely on her appearance, rather than internally on her righteousness, character, mind, and intellect. A Muslima woman does not desire to adorn her body for men, sexualizing herself to gain attention from those other than her husband. "...That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused (molested). And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful..." (Quran 33:59) According to this Verse in the Holy Koran, a Muslima should wear a Hijab and dress modestly so she can be recognized as a Muslima, a woman that is chaste and serious about her modesty. A Muslima sets a standard for herself and sends a message for everyone around her she is not one to sell herself cheap and knows her value, that she is a strong woman with courage, inner strength, endurance, and is a practicing Muslima that would not harm, oppress, or cheat anyone. The Hijab is a shield that helps prevent a Muslima from being a victim of molestation, taunting, humiliation, or teasing. Not only does she wear modest garb to protect herself, but she wears it to protect men and society at large. Contrary to popular belief, many assume that the Hijab is worn solely to restrain men’s illicit desires. It is not the women’s responsibility to regulate a man’s behavior. Every man is responsible and accountable for their conduct and action. The Holy Qur’an also instructs men to be modest, lower their gaze, guard their modesty, and to handle themselves sensibly in every sphere of their lives. God states: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do" (Quran 24:40) The Holy Koran instructs men to observe modesty first before addressing women. While many often incorporate the concept of the Hijab with wearing a headscarf, that is only one application of the idea. The Hijab is much more than a head covering, but the overall concept of being modest and humble in other aspects of life as well. A similar instruction is given in the Bible: ‘You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart’ (Gospel of Mathew 5:27-28) In the Holy Quran, the Almighty specifically addresses women when He asks them not to show off their adornments, except that which it is proper and easily apparent, and to draw their veils over their bodies due to the physical and biological distinctions that exist between males and females and their modes of attraction to one another. This is evident in today’s world, where the disgraceful exposure of sex-appeal is catered overwhelmingly to men as opposed to women—by corporations and industries mindful of how their advertising and selling of products influence their purchasing behavior. Some feminist movements and media outlets portray the Hijab as a depiction of oppression and slavery of women. While sadly some Muslim women are oppressed in some Muslim countries even though it goes against the teachings of Islam, the overall oppression of women happens in many parts of the world regardless of the oppressor’s religion or culture, even if they are atheist in faith. While one can say that a particular government or group of people generally oppress women, it is not truthful to say that Islam oppresses women. No Islamic laws oppress women, Islam states women have every right to a decent life without facing aggression or abuse of any sort. If women were indeed granted their God-given rights, oppression would not exist in the manner it does today. Unfortunately, Islam is not being practiced as it should be—even in Muslim land. Islam honors women; yet sadly across the globe, Muslim women fall victim to cultural aberrations that have no place in this beautiful, perfect faith. A Muslim woman who covers her hair or places her religion above worldly pursuits is sometimes labeled oppressed; but in reality, oppression is not defined by a piece of material on one’s head, but by a weakening of the heart and mind. Liberation means freedom, but not freedom to do as one pleases. Freedom must never come at the expense of oneself or others. When a Muslim woman fulfills the role for which she was created, to find God, build a relationship with, and follow His guidance and commands, not only is she liberated—but is empowered and honored. She is liberated and freed from the shackles of society, the pressures of society, and the unrealistic stereotypes and images dictated by the media. Muslim women who chose to cover their hair and dress modestly view the act as a right, and not a burden. The concept of Hijab is not a concept unique to Islam. Both Christianity and Judaism share many beliefs, including covering one’s hair in public with a veil. It was the custom of Jewish women and Catholic Nuns to go out in public with their heads covered. As recently as 40-50 years ago, it was unheard of for a Christian woman to go to church without covering her head nor wearing a long skirt. In fact, the concept of a female head covering is found in the Bible stating a woman must cover her head and if she shows her head uncovered, she dishonors her head—and should have her head shaved off: ‘But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one las if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be ma shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered’ (1 Corinthians: 11: 5-6) Unlike related passages found in the Holy Qur’an, Paul in this verse presented the veil as a sign of man’s authority. A woman wearing her headscarf, in his view, should do so to show her subordination to a man. This sexist view of women covering their heads reflects the influence of certain individuals in the west, who think the Hijab is oppressive and a symbol of inferiority and degradation. This is because they subconsciously are reacting to the Judea-Christian concept of the veil which is the symbol of woman’s subjection to her husband. This is not the case in Islam at all. The concept of the Hijab comes with necessary conditions which should be followed by Muslima women. The terms are that the whole body, except for the face and hands, should be covered, and by clothing that is loose, not tight, and not transparent. The dress should not attract attention or accentuate the body, should not be perfumed, and should not resemble clothing worn by men or unbelievers—nor should it be overly elegant nor ornate. God has given an exception to this rule to those who are no longer capable of bearing children, who no longer desire marriage or sexual relations, and who cannot excite the passions of men. These ladies do not need to cover themselves to the same degree as other women do. They are allowed to remove their outer garment, known as a Jilbab in Arabic. "And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage - there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing" (Quran 24:60) The Prophet of God peace be upon him praised modest women, who guard their chastity, and the beauty bestowed upon them by God. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him also cursed those women that display and flaunt their beauty in public, stating that those women will not smell the fragrance of Paradise. Our Prophet peace be upon him has warned us that towards the end of time, women will exist who are dressed yet naked, he warned us of women who will turn away from righteousness and will be inclined to do evil, leading others astray—including their husbands. To my dear believing sister, let not the whispers of shaitan (satan) mislead and misguide you. And let not satan drag you from your Creator, the All-Merciful, All-Loving. You need to recognize that you are not in a position to negotiate your faith, what you should accept and what you should decry. You need to submit fully and willingly. And realize, my dear sister, that you are blessed and honored to be amongst the people of La Ala Ila Allah (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah). Do not procrastinate, as your death can occur at any moment, bringing with it an end to the test of your faith and actions. The act of not wearing a Hijab or not dressing modestly is a sin, but to justify your actions is much worse. When you are honest with yourself and will admit your transgressions, you gain the chance for repentance, change, and forgiveness. Feeling guilty of sin is the first step of repentance. Like any other act of worship, the act of dressing modestly and wearing Hijab will require faith, sacrifice, discipline, and patience. Dressing modestly strengthens the relationship between you and your Lord. To my dear sister who is struggling through her journey of Hijab, strengthen your prayer rituals and connection with God and His Holy Book. Supplicate to Him and beg for His Help. Pray and enhance your relationship with Him, as these acts will keep you away from sins and unlawful acts—giving you the power you need to resist evil elements. Take the first step now and never give up on your quest for faith. Wear the Hijab for the sake of God alone and ignore the outside noise, ignore people’s stares and comments, and realize that this journey is worth the struggle. Realize that pleasing people is a goal you can never achieve and that pleasing your Creator is the road to contentment and peace. Our Prophet peace be upon him narrated: ‘Whoever seeks Allah's pleasure by incurring the wrath of the people, Allah will suffice and protect him from the people. And whoever seeks the people's pleasure by Allah's wrath, Allah will entrust him to the people.’ Surround yourself with righteous, practicing sisters, realizing that you are too precious to be on display for each man to see. And realize, my dear sister, that you and your believing sisters are the last true representatives of femininity on this Earth.
