The draft script of the planned movie on the March 15 mosque attacks has been called a Hollywood rewrite of New Zealand history.A copy of the draft script - which centres on Jacinda Ardern and includes a graphic reconstruction of the deadly terrorist attacks on two Christchurch mosques - was leaked to Newshub. The draft script included 15 deaths and more woundings across 17 pages.Newshub asked lawyer Linda Clark to look at the political reaction to March 15 included in excerpts from 10 pages of the script."They're writing a version of New Zealand history, but they're writing it with an American sensibility," Clark said.Jacinda Ardern was represented as a "slender figure". On the night after the attacks as she gets out of her bed "dressed in a slip" and looking out the window where she "breaks down" and "sobs alone".While Ardern is portrayed as politically strong, the script implies she needs reassurance from partner Clarke Gayford and then deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, Newshub reported."Has there ever been a day like today?" Ardern asks Peters in the script. In te reo Māori, he says: "He kotuku reranga tahi," which is subtitled as "the white heron only flies once".Clark told Newshub the script's portrayal of Ardern was "emotional, objectifying and pretty sexist"."[The draft script] is written as if an American wrote it, for an American audience, with no understanding of how New Zealand looks at these issues and how our politicians behave."Peters called his part of the script "total nonsense" while Simon Bridges, also featured in the script, calling it "misleading" and "offensive"."Hollywood has had some great movies based on history, but sadly this won't be one of them," Peters told Newshub. He said this was too serious of an issue for some "cheap Hollywood script" to try to make money out of."I suggest they withdraw from the scene if they don't intend to be honest here."In the script, Bridges' character is opposed to Ardern's gun law reforms and is quoted as saying: "come for our guns, you might get bullets". However, he supported the law change in real life."This is a misleading and dishonest Americanisation of what happened in our country," he told Newshub. In place of David Seymour, the script includes a character named "Solomon Marsh", also against Ardern's gun law changes.New Zealand-born Andrew Niccol wrote the film script and Newshub sent questions to his agent, but is yet to receive a response.Earlier, Newshub showed parts of the leaked script to three families who lost loved ones on March 15.Ambreen Naeem - whose husband Naeem and son Talha were killed in the attacks - said the script was unethical, totally immoral and unacceptable."It's quite distressing and retraumatising," Ambreen told Newshub.Maha Elmadani, who lost her father Ali in the attack, said she couldn't see how a movie based on the draft script she saw excerpts of was any different from the livestream.Salwa Mohamad, whose husband Khaled and son Hamza were murdered at Al Noor Mosque, said it was worse.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern appears to have trumped her Justice Minister in saying an apparent gap in the law should be looked at to better protect people from being harmed online when explicit images are published. But neither of them mentioned a bill before select committee at Parliament, which already seeks to do that very thing.Ardern's comments come as the National Party and its Upper Harbour candidate Jake Bezzant part ways, following allegations that Bezzant had impersonated his former partner online, shared explicit images without her consent, and even pretended to be her to have cyber sex with other men.Bezzant has rejected the claims, which were aired in a podcast published this week.Told a summary of the podcast's contents yesterday and asked if there was any truth to it, Bezzant told the Herald: "No, there's not, but I haven't listened to it."He added this morning: "Personal relationship break-ups sometimes get messy. Two sides to every story. There is more than just her and I involved so I am going to respect that and so I am not going to discuss it. I am not going to put myself forward for candidacy at this point. His former partner, Tarryn Flintoft, laid a complaint with police but she said police found no criminal wrongdoing.Under the Harmful Digital Communications Act, a person commits a criminal offence if posting online content causes harm - but they must also have intended to cause harm. (There is a lower threshold for civil action, which must only show that harm is done.)A criminal offence could lead to a two-year jail term or a fine up to $50,000.Flintoft said the police complaint didn't lead to any charges because Bezzant's alleged actions were for his own pleasure."Regardless of intent - there IS harm. Ongoing harm. Distressing, violating harm," she told the Herald.Asked if the "intent to cause harm" prerequisite was appropriate, Ardern said: "That's why I'm interested in looking at what may need to be required there. There's been some debate over, for instance, the issue of revenge porn and whether our own legislation is fit for purpose there as well."This is something we do need to take a look at."Her comments came minutes after Justice Minister Kris Faafoi told media that it was something that he might ask officials to look at, but he refused to say if it would or should be looked at.Neither Faafoi nor Ardern mentioned the bill currently before select committee in Parliament, which would make it a crime to post intimate visual recordings of someone without consent.Netsafe chief executive Martin Cocker said the bill was explicitly aimed at filling the gap in the law."People say, 'I shared these nudes but I was just having a bit of fun, I never intended it for it to be harmful.'"They therefore don't meet the threshold under the Act, which seems pretty ludicrous when you consider the harm, which is obvious to any reasonable person."Flintoft welcomed Ardern's comments."It's a shame it takes so much harm before change is initiated but I am pleased to see it is now being looked at."If through my experience I can create some kind of change so that others don't have to feel so vulnerable or let down, it is worth it."A Netsafe survey in 2019 found 5 per cent of New Zealand adults - or 170,000 people - had been the victim of online image-based abuse, with instances even reported by people over 70 years old.Ninety-five per cent of the victims were women.Meanwhile further allegations against Bezzant have surfaced. One person, who didn't want to be named, said he received explicit images of Flintoft from her Snapchat account, but suspected it wasn't her sending them."I don't know how he got the password. He then started sending me nudes - which I never asked for."He wanted to have proof that she was cheating when she wasn't. I screenshot it and sent it to her, and then he deactivated the Snapchat account."Ardern said all political parties were responsible for vetting their candid...

National's reinvigorated leader is relishing the ammunition she's been given to fire shots at the government in the form of Trevor Mallard, a pay freeze for the public sector and a separatist health and political system.
Hypocritical and a distraction - that's how some Māori health leaders have described National leader Judith Collins' comments that a Māori Health Authority is separatist. Her party want to scrap it, saying the healthcare system shouldn't be determined by race. It's been met with dismay from Māori GPs and providers who say the current system is already separatist - because Māori are getting sub-par care. Meriana Johnsen has more.

The future of Judith Collins as the National Party leader has once again dominated headlines this week.Rumours of a Simon Bridges/Christopher Luxon ticket swirled earlier in the week after a NZ Herald report, though all parties are denying that the two are plotting to roll Collins any time soon. However, speaking on The Sunday Panel with Francesca Rudkin, journalist Frances Cook says Press Gallery journalists are likely to be hearing stories coming from somewhere - even if any plans are not strong enough to write an article. "They are talking to politicians all the time. They know who in the party is starting to get itchy feet."She says that these pieces can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. "Once people starting talking about your replacement, you are covered in the stench of failure." National Party member and columnist Liam Hehir says that he has spoken with some members this week, and they are denying that this ticket is an option. However, he says almost every MP sees themselves as a potential leader and Prime Minister. "There's always going to be in politics whenever there's any hint of vulnerability speculation, there will be people trying to wind themselves up to take over when the time is right."He says that the time isn't right for any of those potential leadership candidates - and that would be a year out from the next election. Listen above as the Sunday Panel also discusses the future of the Royal Family in the wake of Prince Philip's death
Over the course of his nearly half-century career, Paul Collins has experienced some dizzying highs, crushing lows and almost everything in between. The "King Of Power Pop" was chewed up and spit out by the music industry in the '80s, only to resurface in the early 2000s with a newfound DIY approach, renewed energy and new listeners who were eager to hear material that never really had an audience the first time around. With his Julliard training, a major label past and thousands upon thousands of shows under his belt from his decades on stage, you can be sure Collins has no shortage of amazing stories to share. Recently, Collins spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about his extensive and altogether impressive history as an artist, his musical origin in a New York basement, his time in The Nerves and The Breakaways, The Beat's unexpected rise to notoriety, his "fallow" years away from music, the path back to performing, and the appreciation he has for his ongoing second act. Along the way, Collins read an excerpt from his new book, talked about his strong connection to the Milwaukee/Wisconsin music scene, discussed his appearance in the music video for a song Midnight Reruns wrote about him and much more. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. A Maori academic says it's not sexist that National's Judith Collins isn't allowed to speak at Waitangi.National leader Collins spoke out about not being given the opportunity to speak during yesterday's politicians' powhiri at Waitangi.Māori studies academic and political commentator Dr Rawiri Taonui has written extensively on the topic, and says the Pākehā assumption that women sitting behind men at pōwhiri was discriminatory and sexist was wrong - as were decisions about who spoke."For Māori, the roles are equal: women in front for the karanga, men in front for whaikōrero, side-by-side for waiata."After those formal ceremonies, during which political discussion was not allowed, Taonui said the floor should be open for both women and men to speak.Collins arguing her being denied the chance to speak during the formal part of the ceremony was unequal was based on a "monocultural lens of equality", Taonui said."I grew up watching my aunties on marae doing the kāranga, and uncles the whaikōrero, then they would meet and discuss, and that was all driven by my auntie."So the problem with Judith is she is very monocultural in how she thinks about it and is applying that to a customary ceremonial situation, and that is changing tikanga."My preferred option would be to stick to tikanga."That would also mean the Prime Minister needed to wait until after the ceremony to speak.Taonui also said it was important those who were allowed to speak did so proficiently in te reo Māori."It is a misconception all Māori males get to speak - it is only the top speakers. To do otherwise is to change tikanga. It is not to say people cannot speak, just not during that formal part of the ceremony."An exception was Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little last year, who widely impressed speaking solely in te reo Māori without notes."That was probably the best delivery from any Pākehā politician I have ever seen, and he earned the place to do that."However, decisions about who could speak, particularly when politics was involved, has long been challenged by wahine Māori, he said. The late Whaea McClutchie was a noted female speaker from the East Coast tribe of Ngāti Porou, famous for upsetting men from tribes which didn't let women speak. If they entered her domain or marae, she would stand up and speak, as her female ancestors had.She said no one had the right to dispute her mana as a speaker, because she had been given that right by her people and no other authority counted. But Taonui agreed with Davidson, that debate was to be had within Māoridom.

In Jan. 2017, millions of marchers all over the United States came together in what may have been the largest single day of protest in U.S. history. Later that year, the #MeToo movement — which had begun quietly more than a decade earlier — began to snowball. And in 2018, a record number of women were elected to public office in the U.S.
Desperate, negative and a little bizzare - that's the verdict on Judith Collins' tactics in the final week of the campaign. The National Party leader has doubled down on her wealth tax attacks and even gone so far as to call Jacinda Ardern a liar - something the Labour Party leader denies. But political commentators say it's hardly likely to win over undecided voters - and instead it's a sign National's worried about loosing some of its traditional support base. Reporter Katie Doyle has the story.
The barbs flew during last night's leaders' debate in Christchurch, but both prospective prime ministers are guilty of getting tricky with the truth. Checkpoint ran a fine-tooth comb through the exchanges.
