When Nick Cave was in his early band The Birthday Party, he was angry and antagonistic toward his audience. The legendary Australian musician, writer and actor eventually grew out of his youthful contempt, but he remained consumed by his work, always putting it first before anything else. Then he lost two of his sons. In this wide-ranging conversation about grief, ambition, God and Johnny Cash, Nick tells Tom Power how he was forever transformed by his experience of unimaginable loss. He also discusses his new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album, “Wild God,” and the mysterious origins of his songwriting.

I have no earthly idea how to describe this conversation. It's about religion and belief – at this moment in our politics, and in our lives more generally. My guest and I come from very different perspectives. Ross Douthat is a Catholic conservative, who wrote a book called “Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious.” I'm a … Californian. But I think everyone would enjoy this conversation — believers, skeptics and seekers alike. Some questions touched on: Is the Trump administration Christian or pagan? How do Christian Trump supporters reconcile the cruelties of this administration with their faith? Can religious experiences be explained by misfiring neurons? Should organized religions embrace psychedelics? Can mystery provide more comfort than certainty? And if you do enjoy this episode, be sure to check out Douthat's new New York Times Opinion Audio show “Interesting Times,” available wherever you get your podcasts, and on YouTube.Mentioned:Interesting Times with Ross Douthat“Donald Trump, Man of Destiny” by Ross DouthatLiving with a Wild God by Barbara EhrenreichBook Recommendations:Modern Physics and Ancient Faith by Stephen BarrAfter by Bruce GreysonMind and Cosmos by Thomas NagelThoughts? Tom Hirons is a poet whose work resonates deeply with the primal and ungovernable forces of nature, the human condition, and the intersections where they meet. His writing, including the much-lauded poem Sometimes a Wild God, stirs something ancient within, reminding readers of the chaos and beauty that lie at the heart of existence. In this conversation, we delve into the inspirations and philosophies behind his work, exploring the wild, untamed forces that shape his poetry and his perspective on creativity. Sam, who is Misner, and Megan, who is Smith comprise one of the most acclaimed acts in the Americana world. Blending elements of that genre with bluegrass, traditional folk ballads, and more pop leaning ideas, they've been described as making music that is gloriously nonconforming. Aside from their musical chops, Sam & Megan are expert gardeners who focus on pollinators, sustainability and community gardening. Listen on to find out how their connection to nature feeds into their music. 219: The Wheel of the Year - My guest this week is Dr Rebecca Beattie. Rebecca has just released a book called ‘The Wheel of the Year', which is a look at what is happening in nature and in ourselves as the seasons move from one to the other. She suggests tools and rituals to rediscover and appreciate each seasonal festival, giving you a chance to pause, reflect and connect you to the wheel of your own life. As this is the last episode of 2022 and the winter solstice is just 2 days away, I thought this would be a perfect way to wrap up the year and to encourage you to take time to appreciate, well time, as it passes and as things shift from one state of being to another. Christmas can be a frenetic time so I hope you can take half an hour out of your schedule to sit down and listen to Rebecca and to contemplate your place in the wheel of the year. In this episode of The Observatory, Scott and LaRae Wright illuminate Tom Hirons's poem "Sometimes A Wild God," tracing Scott's initial encounter with the work and its lasting impact. They talk about the concept of life experiences as teachers, with Scott sharing personal insights on how holding onto shame and guilt can amplify negative emotions. LaRae opens up about her emotional landscape, providing a personal context for their discussion. As they read through the powerful verses of "Sometimes A Wild God," Scott and LaRae unpack the universal theme of inner wildness and our struggles confronting our battles. They explore the importance of dissipating negative energies and embracing the subtle aspects of our nature that often go unnoticed. Timestamps[02:20] Where Scott first encountered the poem[04:15] Seeing experiences in our lives as teachers[06:52] LaRae's emotional landscape[11:11] The poem: Sometimes A Wild God by Tom Hirons[19:40] The wild that is in all of us[22:46] Wrestling our battles[26:26] Dissipating negative things in our negative space[28:30] Subtleties we need to step closer into[32:40] Final remarks on the poemNotable Quotes“Sometimes the things that we hold in a place of shame, guilt or darkness, it multiplies and gets bigger.” - Scott Wright [05:51]“It's one of those poems that just continues to unfold and unfold and meet you where you are.” - Scott Wright [18:59]“The natural man is an enemy to God.” - Scott Wright [20:36]“Wherever our attention goes or what we give energy to, grows.” - LaRae Wright [24:06]“Anything that we hold in darkness brings darkness to us.” - Scott Wright [26:34]“When we allow the energy of holding something in a negative space to dissipate, it kind of loses its hold over you.” - Scott Wright [28:17]Relevant links:Poem: Sometimes A Wild God by Tom Hirons https://tomhirons.com/poetry/sometimes-a-wild-godFeral Angels Press: Sometimes A Wild God by Tom Hirons https://feralangels.com/books/sometimes-a-wild-godSubscribe to the podcast: Apple Podcast

Their 18th studio album unexpectedly turns the unfortunately thrilling second act of Nick Cave into the maximalist, away from the brilliant abstract, avant experimentalism of Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen. There's plenty to adore in Cave's battle with the God's, though the heavyweight first half of the album is more compelling than the more resigned and conventionally composed second half.

Send us a textAll bands need a name, but the process of getting that name is different for each band. This episode, we look at how a bunch of well-known bands got their names.  Some are amusing, some are horrifying, some are dark or seedy – be ready for surprises! Our “album you must listen to before you die” is Arc of a Diver, by Stevie Winwood (1980).  This was a formative album during our youth, and with this million-selling album and its hit single “While You See a Chance”, Winwood was a major influence on other people we love, such as Marianne Faithfull.   In Rock News, the major story is that the Gallagher brothers have agreed to reunite as Oasis for a UK tour in 2025. We don't like the odds of the brothers completing the tour without fighting and would like ringside seats! In other news, we look at Nick Cave's new album, Wild God, Bruce Springsteen back on tour, and Neil Young releasing Archives Vol. III, a 17-CD box set featuring 198 tracks.  Wow! References: Oasis, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, INXS, Guns n Roses, Bee Gees, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Fleetwood Mac, Joy Division, Nazi camps, 10CC, The Lovin' Spoonful, Steely Dan, The Mothers of Invention, Frank Zappa, The Doobie Brothers, Rammstein, Ramstein air show tragedy, Husker Du, The Velvet Underground, Depeche Mode, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Boris Karloff, The Foo Fighters, The Angels, The Beatles, The Quarrymen, The Silver Beetles, Tony Sheridan & the Beat Brothers, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Pink Floyd, Pink Anderson & Floyd Council, “Oh by the way, which one's Pink?”, Cheap Trick, Slade, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Shakespeare's Sister, The Bay City Rollers, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Tim Staffell, “Smile”, Freddie Mercury, The Band, The Hawks, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Barenaked Ladies, Jethro Tull, U2, The Hype, Beach Boys, The Pendeltons, "Surfin'", Blue Öyster Cult, “On Your Feet or on Your Knees”  Playlist – Band names

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds have been a band since 1983 and have gained a cult following around Nick Cave's persona as a sort of Prince of Darkness. But about ten years ago, he encountered real tragedy that changed him and his music completely. Wild God, is The Bad Seed's 18th studio album, it deals with Cave's journey through grief of the past decade and landing on new, long dormant emotions like joy, that the band are experiencing once again. Steven and Ian begin this week's episode by talking about a big potential reunion in the rock world. Of course we're referring to... TV On The Radio! The band appears to be teasing something right now, which the guys assume is probably their first concert dates in five years (1:38). After that, they of course talk about the return of Oasis. Steven is very pumped, but will he actually pay through the nose to see them in Europe (7:06)? Maybe he will to take his mind off the disastrous state of his Fantasy Album Draft team. It looks like Ian is on the way to yet another easy victory this quarter (22:07). The guys then transition to a conversation about Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, who release a new album, Wild God, today. Steven is yay on Cave, but what about Ian (29:57)?In the mailbag, a listener asks about the phenomenon of "rawdogging" on airplanes and whether the guys ever listen to music without doing anything else (40:00). Then they answer an email about whether they like prog rock, and Steven gives a very detailed answer (47:17).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the UK act Seefeel and Steven goes for veteran singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne (56:22).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. On August 30, the Australian-born rock titan Nick Cave will release Wild God, a new album with his band The Bad Seeds. It's a high point in Cave's career, and NPR Music's Ann Powers spoke with him about the struggles — personal, musical and religious — he faced on the road to making the album. Wild God is filled with songs about encounters with the divine, which does not always take a benevolent form. And it follows a decade in which Cave, having publicly faced tragedy in his own life, has evolved from post-punk's louchest fallen angel into a revered figure among his audience in a new way: a dignified seeker whose courage and wisdom resounds beyond musical boundaries thanks to advice he has shared in interviews, writing projects and public appearances. Perhaps it's not surprising that so many of the songs reckon with the moment of revelation or transformation, or the demand for conversion from a As for the state of his own religious conviction, Cave says that the struggle is the point: "I would say I'm in the process of conversion," he tells Powers. Wherever he is on that road, he's found something ecstatic to share.Click here to read a transcript of this interview and hear songs from the album Wild God.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

On the 77th episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I am delighted to introduce our guest, Tom Hirons. Tom is a poet and storyteller based in Devon, UK. He is the director of Feral Angels Press and editor of Clarion poetry magazine. He teaches poetry writing, both online and in person, and runs poetry-focused wilderness fasts. Tom's piece, Sometimes a Wild God, is a subcultural poetry classic. He has never won a poetry prize or been published in a poetry magazine, yet still makes his living from poetry. He says, "I have heard all the terrible news and I have looked into the inferno of the future, but I am still in love with this life." Tom's latest collection, The Queen of Heaven, is out this week.In this glorious conversation, Tom shares his journey of becoming a poet and realising how he can best apply his abilities in the world. We discuss tracking life and threads from other worlds. We muse on balancing our ascending into spirit and descending into soul, while acknowledging the beauty that can be lost if we try too hard. He also notes the significance of wilderness fasting in terms of initiation into adulthood and in knowing and living out his nature and soul image. If you have a gnawing feeling or aching sense that there is so much more to this life than what you are presently aware of or accepting of, this conversation will point to and suggest where to explore, what there is to discover, and what life can feel like from there.Subscribe for weekly episodes, every Tuesday, and check out my YouTube channel (link below) for clips and shorts. For further content and information check out the following:Check out Tom's books here: https://feralangels.com His newsletter here: https://newsletter.tomhirons.com/bear-speaks-to-the-starsHis website: https://tomhirons.comFacebook: https://facebook.com/hironstomInstagram: https://instagram.com/bearspeakstothestars- For the podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life if you'd like to further explore your own lines of self-inquiry or create experiences that lead to more connecting and genuine conversations amongst groups of people.04:00 Becoming a poet and who he is07:00 How to develop for greater benefit to others10:45 Transcendent experiences when connecting to art15:15 Tracking life and the threads from other worlds21:15 The significance of Wilderness fasting and initiation into adulthood27:00 The balancing of soul and spirit of ascending and descending31:20 Marking our steps into adulthood35:00 Cultivating a paying attention to and tracking of life39:45 Allowing space for the non-sacred in creativity44:50 The beauty that can be lost if we are trying too hard50:28 Life force, wildness, and the daemon56:48 The war against the devourer and claiming our birthright1:01:30 What is a good life for Tom?
