Thurman Thomas sits down with me to talk about his fatherhood journey. He shares why he and his wife, Patti were all about teaching their kids about kindness. In addition he shares the life lessons his kids have taught him. Plus he also gives advice about adoption. After that we talk about his fantastic football career that landed him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Plus we talk about the work he and the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund did with Southern Recipe Pork Rinds. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five.  About Thurman Thomas  Thurman Thomas developed into one of the NFL's most versatile and dangerous offensive players in his 13 years in the league. He was also known as one of the team's most emotional leaders for the Buffalo Bills a team that won more games (103) than any AFC team in the 1990s. His ability to catch the ball as well as run with it was a key ingredient to the Bills' "No Huddle" offensive attack. In 1991, Thomas amassed more than 2,000 all-purpose yards, just the 11th player ever to do so.  Named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s, Thomas was selected first- or second-team All-Pro and All-AFC five times, and was voted to the Pro Bowl five straight years. Thomas retired as the NFL's ninth ranked rusher with 12,074 yards and added another 4,458 yards on 472 catches. He scored 65 rushing and 23 receiving touchdowns in his 13-season career. E53: CBD for CTE: Why Kyle Turley Turned to Cannabis to Fight His Demons

Good Dudes Grow

Kyle Turley is a well-known All-American football player for San Diego State who has won several awards and accolades for his NFL career. In his experience with NFL medical and pharmaceutical practices, painkillers were dispensed without any oversight and often without informed consent. This practice left Turley with an addiction to painkillers and a serious back injury. In 2014, Turley was one of more than 500 former players who took part in a class action lawsuit against the NFL alleging similar complaints. At 34, he was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and in 2015 he was diagnosed with early onset of Alzheimer's disease. Turley also has a seizure disorder. He deals every day with serious symptoms of these neurological disorders, and now uses cannabis in place of prescription medication–a choice, he says, that's saved his life. Now, Turley has founded the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing medical care and other forms of assistance to retired NFL players in need. His goal is to research the effectiveness of cannabis in treating depression and chronic pain, and help advance policy change regarding the use of cannabis in professional sports. In this episode, listen to Turley sing praises for the many uses of CBD and cannabis–from building immunity to COVID-19 to treating a tooth abscess. Tune in to hear his experiences and his passion for natural, alternative medicine when it comes to people like Gary, who have experienced cognitive and bodily illness or injury and who are just looking for relief and change.   What You'll Learn:  How Kyle has helped over twenty people with positive COVID-19 tests using CBD and cannabis What CBD and cannabis have to offer a person with brain or body injuries that prescription pills cannot Why Kyle quit prescription medication cold-turkey and turned exclusively to cannabis And so much more!   Favorite Quote:  “Opinions don't really matter–CBD is a health care issue, and we need to start standing up for it as such.” Kyle Turley   How to Get Involved:  You can get a better idea of  Kyle Turley's cannabis journey by following him on Instagram. He is also an advocate for Revenant, and the co-founder of the CBD company NXPF. Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike. Gary considers hemp-based medicine a calling, and his organization, along with the world-class team that runs it, reflects his passion. The Superb Owl is coming and you're going to need some beer... It's time for the biggest football matchup of the year, which is also a great excuse for some killer parties.  The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers throw down in Miami this Sunday and we're ready for the party.  To prep for the festivities we sampled a few beers from the team's cities and talk about Super Bowl stats, food and beer stats, and pairing pork rinds with your beers. We kickoff with San Francisco's 21st Amendment's El Sully Mexican Lager, then move into Q2 with some Kansas City brew and Boulevard's Tank 7 American Saison.  San Fran comes back strong in the 3rd with Anchor Brewing's Old Foghorn English Barleywine and we finish out the game with a wildcard from Michigan, Bell's Hopslam. Fun fact... Super Bowl Sunday is also National Pork Rind Appreciation Day.  Seriously.  To celebrate this glorious holiday we're joined by Chef Reuben Wood who offers up pairing suggestions with a variety of Southern Recipe pork rinds.  He also shares some info on a contest at porkrinds.com running during the Big Game where they'll be giving away over $2500 in prizes and supporting the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.
