About Thurman Thomas Thurman Thomas developed into one of the NFL's most versatile and dangerous offensive players in his 13 years in the league. He was also known as one of the team's most emotional leaders for the Buffalo Bills a team that won more games (103) than any AFC team in the 1990s. His ability to catch the ball as well as run with it was a key ingredient to the Bills' "No Huddle" offensive attack. In 1991, Thomas amassed more than 2,000 all-purpose yards, just the 11th player ever to do so. Named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s, Thomas was selected first- or second-team All-Pro and All-AFC five times, and was voted to the Pro Bowl five straight years. Thomas retired as the NFL's ninth ranked rusher with 12,074 yards and added another 4,458 yards on 472 catches. He scored 65 rushing and 23 receiving touchdowns in his 13-season career. Bruce Smith is hurting. He's feeling the effects of those 299 total games played, those 214.5 total sacks (playoffs included). Many nights, he's in so much pain that he barely grabs a wink of sleep. So just imagine how all those quarterbacks feel. Those 76 different quarterbacks he sacked. The Buffalo Bills legend is truly one of the greatest football players to ever live. On this episode of “How the NFL Works” at Go Long, Smith explains exactly how he was able to dominate offenses. The Pro Football Hall of Famer was named to the NFL's All-Decade Team in both the 80s and 90s. Nobody sacked the quarterback more than him — not Reggie White, not Lawrence Taylor. There's a very good chance his regular-season record of 200 lasts for a long, long time. For perspective, Myles Garrett still has 98 sacks to go.And yet, Smith also knows his career could've crumbled if he didn't look in the mirror and demand changes from himself. From brutal training sessions on a StairMaster to his diet to — above all — meticulous film study, Smith became a monstrous force vs. the pass and the run on the Bills team that reached four straight Super Bowls. And he did it while playing in a 3-4 defense. Indeed, there's an art to the destruction. On this episode, Smith doesn't hold back on a variety of topics. * His life turnaround, from 310 pounds and out of shape to 6.3 percent body fat.* His relationship with Bills fans. It has evolved. During the ‘91 season, he received racist letters and wanted out of Buffalo. One conversation with Marv Levy changed his mind.* Stories from the trenches. What did Joe Montana and Dan Marino have to say after Smith flattened them?* What kind of owner was Ralph Wilson?* What was the missing piece on his Super Bowl teams?* Josh Allen. Smith marvels at the team's MVP-worthy quarterback today. He keeps in touch with Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane, too.* Yes, Smith believes he's got the case to make as the greatest defensive player ever.Video and audio are available here.Go Long is completely powered by you. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the play of the Steelers kickoff return unit. When the NFL made the change this offseason to its kickoff rules to emulate the XFL kickoff that we've seen all season, Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin wasted little time, signing Cordarrelle Patterson to a two-year contract that very day. Patterson is a four-time All-Pro kickoff returner, was a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, and has gone over 1,000 all-purpose yards in a season nine times. But for whatever reason, it hasn't been working for the 32-year-old this season. Of players with at least 10 kickoff returns, Patterson is dead last with a 21.8 yards per return average. The Steelers as a team are also 32nd in kickoff returns, even though fellow returner Jaylen Warren has done better than Patterson. What went wrong and how can the Steelers fix it? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Joe DeLamielleure will tell you he has lived a charmed life. An All-American at Michigan State he was drafted in the first round by the Buffalo Bills in 1973. In his 13 years in the NFL, he never missed a game due to injury. In fact, he's never once had any kind of surgery in his life. And that rookie season was one to behold. He helped solidify the Bills line and opened up holes for OJ Simpson to run through en route to being the first player ever to eclipse 2,000 yards in a season. The O-line was known as the Electric Company because they would turn on the Juice, otherwise known as OJ. 6-times a Pro Bowler, Joe D. was a member of the NFL's All 70's All-Decade Team, the Bills Wall of Fame and the Browns Ring of Honor and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. And since his retirement he has worked tirelessly to get older NFL players taken care of financially as well as their health care needs tended to. It's been a struggle but DeLamielleure doesn't back down to a challenge... like when he rode 2,000 miles to Mexico on a bike to raise money for an orphanage south of the US Border... this despite the fact that Joe had never ridden a bike before. That's the kind of man he is... one who values friends, family and faith over money, fame and recognition. And that's why when the topic of OJ comes up, he doesn't back down from portraying his friend from 50 years ago in a light many of us haven't seen in quite some time. Not that he excuses Simpson for what took place, but Joe knew another side to OJ and still struggles to this day to separate the man he played with and blocked for on a football field with the man who killed two people in Brentwood, CA thirty years ago. It's a powerful talk with a man who tells us about the last time he spoke with Simpson just days before the former Heisman Trophy winner died from cancer this past April. Ronde Barber sits down with me to talk about his fatherhood journey. He shares a fantastic view on fatherhood as a girl dad. He shares the lessons he learned from miscarriages and his mindset on becoming a father. After that we talk about his time in the NFL, winning Super Bowl XXXVII and getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In addition we talk about writing children's books with his brother, Tiki and calling games for FOX Sports. We also chat about the work he does at Valspar Championship and Copperhead Charities. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five. About Ronde Barber A list of adjectives used to describe Rondé Barber accurately would grow long. And that would be fitting for a player whose many career highlights starts with his longevity: 241 regular-season games played, an NFL-record streak of 215 consecutive starts at cornerback (224 counting playoffs) and the distinction of being the only defensive back since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to start every game for 13 consecutive seasons. Barber didn't merely fill a spot in the lineup. He made plays that shaped the outcomes of games at a time when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers consistently ranked among the NFL's top defenses and made several trips to the postseason, including a victory in Super Bowl XXXVII. Barber finished his career with 47 interceptions and 28 sacks, leaving him as the only player in NFL history with at least 45 and 25, respectively, in those categories. He's the NFL's all-time sack leader for cornerbacks and also made 88 tackles for loss. Twice he intercepted three passes in a game, and six times he forced at least two turnovers in a game. He scored 14 touchdowns on returns: eight interceptions, four fumbles and two deflected punts. Barber was voted to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 2000s (second team) and was the Buccaneers' winner of the Ed Block Courage Award in 2011, given across the NFL to a player from each team who demonstrates courage, sportsmanship and dedication to his hometown community. ABOUT JERRY KRAMER AND RUN TO WIN "You can if you will." A phrase uttered to a young Jerry Kramer by his line coach at Sandpoint High School in tiny Sandpoint, Idaho, that would go on to push him to a celebrated NFL career with the Green Bay Packers and a sentiment that he would repeat to close his speech at his long awaited enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame almost seven decades later in 2018.In the spirit of Jerry Kramer's unforgettable and bestselling collaborations with the great Dick Schaap, his first book about his life and career in over two decades, Run to Win will serve as Kramer's definitive statement about a remarkable life and career of perseverance, teamwork, and gridiron greatness. Spanning the beginning of the legendary Vince Lombardi era through Kramer's confoundingly long wait to receive his bust in Canton, Kramer tells his amazing story as one of the most memorable and toughest Packers in franchise history. Including insightful commentary about the eminently intriguing Lombardi, as well as fellow Hall of Fame teammates Jim Taylor, Forrest Gregg, Willie Davis, Bart Starr, Emlen Tunnell, and many more, Run to Win is a must read for all true Packers fans from one of the legends who helped lay the foundation for one of the most identifiable and successful franchises in the history of professional sports. JERRY KRAMER BIO Jerry Kramer overcame a series of childhood injuries to become an excellent football ball player at the University of Idaho. The guard was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round (39th player overall) of the 1958 NFL Draft. He starred for the Green Bay Packers from 1958 to 1968, playing most of his 11-season career under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi.Upon his entry into the NFL, he soon was hailed as one of the best blockers in the game and earned his first All-NFL acclaim in 1960, the same year the Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Championship Game -- Kramer's only career postseason loss.He continued his high level of play all while overcoming several debilitating injuries. In 1961, he missed several games due to a broken ankle that required a permanent pin to heal. Then, in 1964, he missed most of the season due to intestinal infections from wood splinters in his abdomen that required eight surgeries to rectify. Edgerrin is one of the most prolific and exciting running backs in UM history ! He came to Miami out of Immokalee (FL.) High School where he also played linebacker and handled kickoff and field goal duties and was named a Parade All-American. He is the only Hurricane running back to post consecutive 1000+ rushing seasons and ranks 2nd in school history with 2,960 yards, despite starting only 17 games. His 35 total touchdowns is tied for the schol record with Stephen McGuire, while his 32 rushing touchdowns is 2nd. He is tied for the school record with fourteen 100+ yard rushing games and had 12 multi-touchdown games in his career. He is also 3rd in rushing attempts (474), and 3rd in all-purpose yards (3,590). His 1,416 yards rushing in 1998 was the most to that time of any Miami back (now 2nd) and set a Big East record, and his 17 touchdowns that year shattered Eddie Dunn's 60-year old school record of 14 touchdowns in 1938 ! He also holds the freshman rushing record (446 yds.). "Edge", as he is known to teammates and fans, saved his best for the big stage, and nothing points that out better than his school record 299 yards in 39 carries performance in the Canes 49-45 upset victory over #2 UCLA in the Orange Bowl in December of 1998 ! He was named first team AP All-Big East, Football News All-Big East, and Football News honorable mention All-American. University of Miami running back Edgerrin James was selected in the first round, 4th overall, of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. The team had great expectations for James as he was picked to replace the recently traded and future Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk. James did not disappoint. His powerful running style and versatility led to a spectacular start to his career. James was tabbed as the NFL's Rookie of the Year in 1999, captured NFL rushing titles in his first two seasons (1,553 yards in 1999 and career-best 1,709 yards in 2000) and scored 13 rushing TDs in each of his first two campaigns. He also caught 62 passes and 4 TDs as a rookie and a career-high 63 receptions and 5 TDs in his second season. James led the team in rushing in six of his seven seasons in Indianapolis and was a key to the potent Colts offense that helped them win four division titles and post six seasons with 10 or more wins. Prior to the 2006 season, James signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent and continued his all-star play. He rushed for 1,000 yards twice in three seasons with the Cardinals and helped them win the NFC West title in 2008 (the team's first division championship in 33 years) and a berth in Super Bowl XLIII. James eclipsed 1,000 yards in a season seven times during his career and topped 1,500 yards four times. A four-time Pro Bowl choice, James rushed 12,246 yards on 3,028 carries and 80 TDs during his 11-year career which ended with a final season with the Seattle Seahawks in 2009. A three-time All-Pro choice (1999-2000 and 2004) and All-AFC selection four times (1999-2000, 2004-05), James was named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of 2000s. St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth are one another's NCHC rivals, which means that, no matter what season, both teams will play host to a series and the teams will play four times. The last time they met was the opening round of the NCHC playoffs last year and the Bulldogs swept the Huskies at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Much has changed since then. The Huskies (10-4 NCHC, 18-6 overall) moved into the top ranking in both national polls this week after sweeping defending national champion Denver (10-4, 19-7) to move into a tie for the lead in the conference. Mick Hatten recaps keys in that series. The unranked Bulldogs (5-9, 10-13-1) are in sixth place in the NCHC after splitting a series at North Dakota (4-8-2, 10-11-4). Matt Wellens and Brad Schlossman discuss the plights of both teams heading down the stretch. In the Big 10, the Gophers (12-3-1, 18-7-1) have a 10-point lead in the conference race after splitting two overtime games with Michigan (6-8, 14-9-1). Jess Myers talks about the big crowds and good hockey in that series. Myers also talks about a big week for the University of St. Thomas, which revealed its plans for a new on-campus arena and then the men's team (6-10-2 CCHA, 7-15-2) picked up four points in a series against conference-leading Bowling Green (11-8-1, 14-13-1). On the women's side, Myers talks about Minnesota's sweep of Bemidji State, Wellens talks about UMD's sweep of St. Thomas and Hatten discusses SCSU picking up a point in a series against top-ranked Ohio State. The panel also chips in on their ballots for the NCHC's All-Decade Team. For more hockey coverage, visit The Rink Live.
