Retirement. It is a word with notes of one chapter solidly shutting down and, with good fortune, another opening up—a transition in chapters we expect to manifest later in life. Hadley Hammer, in her late thirties, is in such a transition. Hammer sent out a notice today, Feb. 17th, marking her retirement from performance skiing. In other words, from being a pro skier. In her retirement statement, she writes, "I am walking away from peak performance, but not from the mountains nor the outdoor community and certainly not from skiing, which I still think is the most delightful way to spend time. My aim isto take all my experience, be it growing up and living in mountain towns to professional athletics, and combine them with my love and adoration of storytelling. I want to use my words to shape culture and habits. To celebrate play, delight, partnerships, and the natural world.”At The High Route, we primarily know Hammer as a fine writer. Someone whose sentences take time to craft and whose narrative arcs speak truths. She's got a solid essay on fashion style in the backcountry in issue 1 of The High Route magazine. (For more of Hammer's writing on style, check out her Substack, TOGS. For someone soon to be pushing into her fourth decade, Hammer has lived a full-spectrum existence. And we explore those ups and downs (but mostly the ups) in this episode. We are grateful for her time and look forward to working with her in the future. For now, we'll link to a snazzy short-film released today, filmed and produced by Sophie Danison, titled Fortune."Fortune is a short film—an incantation to see our own fortune by observing closely the beauty of the world around you.”Thanks for listening, and have a good day, The High Route Team. If you are new to The High Route, we are a reader and listener-supported enterprise focusing on human-powered turn making. Our mission is simple, but it takes real deal calorie burning to piece it all together. We are also excited to announce Issue 1.0 of The High Route magazine is shipping. Fancy paper. Good reads. High-octane photos. And some fine mountain ranges. And turns. You can learn more about our subscription options here. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. And if you think you've spotted a UFO in the past or visited the 7th dimension, "Beautiful Alien" is a good tune to start with.

Hadley Hammer might just have the best name in backcountry skiing. Despite growing up in Jackson Hole, however, her path to becoming a professional skier did not follow a linear track. She dabbled in ski racing, figure skating, cross country skiing and other sports before deciding to pursue competitive freeskiing. Her career got off to a rocky start with a last-place finish at a Freeride World Tour event in Argentina. But Hadley is nothing if not determined and, as she says, stubborn. And so she dedicated her life to improving her skiing, whether in the gym or following heavy hitters around Jackson Hole's legendary terrain. She learned through osmosis, absorbing the skills and tactics they used to navigate the steep and deep. She lived the classic ski bum lifestyle, working as much as possible during the off season to then fully dedicate herself to skiing in the winter months. That ultimately led to sponsorships and eventually being able to support herself through her skiing career. When the love of her life, alpinist David Lama, died in an avalanche in 2019, Hammer withdrew and moved to Innsbruck to mourn his passing. She lived in David's apartment and grieved. She struggled to eat and sleep, spending most of her time in solitude. Eventually, she left the loneliness of Innsbruck for Chamonix, where she had a community of friends on which to lean. Today, love, loss and reflection has led Hadley to reexamine her path. Her skiing speaks for itself, but she's now using her platform and writing skills to have an impact that reaches far beyond the skin track. She's since pushed her skiing in the backcountry of British Columbia, Alaska, Norway and the French Alps. She now lives in Chamonix, France and is supported by sponsors like The North Face, Smith and Line Skis. Find her Discourse here.
Inappropriate Questions has been a staple of The Powell Movement podcast over the past couple of seasons. But did you know the show pre-dates TPM? Years ago, I had a podcast with Powder Magazine called “Sponsored.” To build my audience off that show, I created Inappropriate Questions as a stand-alone podcast and put it out on the TPM feed. When Powder killed the Sponsored pod, I pulled old IQ episodes off the internet, knowing I would create what you are listening to today. Transitions and Transformation During a Crisis! Mountain athlete TJ David, travel influencer “Renee Roaming” Hahnel, entrepreneur Nick Dio, and pro skier Hadley Hammer discuss transitions and transformations during moments of crisis. This is a replay from the Stoked From Home online summit by The Stokecast. Hosted by Jonathan Ronzio and Emily Holland.
Big-mountain skier Hadley Hammer shares her views on life, talks about her career as a professional athlete, and reflects openly on the tragic loss of her boyfriend David Llama in an avalanche.
Hadley Hammer is a professional skier, sure. But she's also a sommelier, gourmet chef, book nerd, showcase Mountain Athlete and climber. Hadley grew up amongst Wyoming's epic Teton mountains and developed a love for outdoor adventures early on, but she also recognized the benefits of a formal career outside of her mountain life. She headed east to earn a B.A in Hospitality and Economics and after a few years working in the urban hotel world, she just knew something was missing. Hadley headed back to her mountain base to achieve a greater balance between career and lifestyle. Balance is the name of her game which now manifests itself in her big mountain skiing pursuits and complimentary lifestyle. SUMMARY Scot was a former skiier that has a tremendous amount of talent in the sport. He’s the host of a #1 ranking podcast on iTunes called The Athletic Stance where he discusses all things mindset, diet and what it take to create a successful life with some of top skiers in the world such as Lexi DuPont. Hadley Hammer and Ingrid Backstrom. He’s now helping other athletes become entrepreneurs by really helping them shape their brand.
Angel Collinson was born into the ski world. She grew up in Snowbird employee housing, where she honed her race skills enough to barely not make the US Ski Team. With racing over, college and big mountain skiing competitions took over. Skiing won. Over the years there have been a lot of women who have pushed the envelope on snow but Angel transcends gender….she’s just a bad ass skier who charges harder than anyone these past few years…guy or girl. In the The Athletic Stance I have made it my job to interview professionals at the top of the skiing field to sift out the patterns that have lead them to success, however that's defined. We talk about why they ski, what helps them stay at the top, social media, community, health, nutrition and a lot more.
“Just do what brings joy to you,”-Ingrid Backstrom On this episode of the “Nausicaa Cast” podcast, presented by Powder Radio, host Hadley Hammer interviews Ingrid Backstrom, the most decorated big mountain skier of all time. The two talk about how professional skiing has evolved, snow safety, and motherhood—Backstrom recently gave birth to a daughter. Backstrom also reflects on her career. “I’m still pretty amazed that somehow I’m still skiing for a living,” says Backstrom. “It still feels like yesterday that I wouldn’t even tell people I was a professional skier because I was so nervous it would all go away.” Bio: After graduating from Whitman College, the call of the mountains drew her to Squaw Valley, California, to put in what she thought would be a year-long stint as a ski bum. However, it only took a few freeskiing contests for Ingrid to realize that she had found her niche. Without doubt, she would be calling the mountains home for a long, long time. Since then, she placed top three in 13 of 16 freeskiing contests entered and has been awarded Breakthrough Performance in 2005, 5-time Best Female Performance, and ten-time Reader Poll winner for her roles in 9 Matchstick Productions films at the annual Powder Magazine Video Awards, in addition to appearing in the 2007 documentary Steep, All.I.Can and Into the Mind by Sherpas Cinema, six Warren Miller films, and 2015‘s The Great Siberian Traverse by Powder Magazine and Sherpas Cinema. Her travels with The North Face have allowed her to make first descents in Baffin Island, Greenland, and 20,000ft Reddomaine Peak in China, as well as a ski descent of Denali. She was named one of 50 most influential action sports athletes in 2013 by ESPN. When she’s not skiing, Ingrid still stays outside as much as possible in her home in Leavenworth, Washington, running, biking, and gardening to relax and keep fit. Ingrid is grateful for the opportunities that her sport brings her, especially getting to travel and ski with “amazing people around the world.” Follow Ingrid: Instagram Facebook Watch
“I made an appointment and went in with my little tiny portfolio, which was so not anything to write home about… and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to shoot a lot this winter and I’d love to be at Alta,’ and they gave me a pass. It was my first pass. And I walked out of the office and called Billy and just started bawling… And all I could hear was him on the other line laughing.” -Rachael Burks On this episode of the “Nausicaa Cast” podcast, presented by Powder Radio, host Hadley Hammer interviews Rachael Burks, known for her big mountain skiing, massive backflips, and huge personality. The two talk about the late Billy Poole. The two lived, skied, and partied together. It was Poole who convinced Burks to first ask Alta for a free season pass. “I made an appointment and went in with my little tiny portfolio, which was so not anything to write home about… and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to shoot a lot this winter and I’d love to be at Alta,’ and they gave me a pass. It was my first pass. And I walked out of the office and called Billy and just started bawling… And all I could hear was him on the other line laughing.” Burks also discusses the glory days as a comp skier, and the frustrations of the womens’ judging. “There were a lot of instances where women were rewarded for just staying on their feet and not really jumping or doing anything particularly difficult,” she says, “but just skiing fluid and beautiful to the bottom. And that irked me. That really fueled my fire. I was so mad sometimes.” Bio: Rachael Burks is as much whirlwind as human, swirling with grand ideas, loud jokes, belly laughs, and big airs. (For reference, watch her get completely buried after hucking a 50-foot cliff in Light the Wick, an old TGR film.) Her no-holds-barred attitude belies her enduring dedication to introducing other women to the sport. Burks, 34, might be the most underrated female skier out there. Last year she was at the center of Pretty Faces, and now she can be seen in Warren Miller’s Chasing Shadows, setting a monoskiing, cliff-hucking, partying example and championing women’s skiing in a big way. -Skiing Mag Follow Rachael Instagram Watch
“I think what worked in my favor the most was total ignorance, I moved there not thinking I was going to make my whole life skiing and climbing mountains.” -Hilaree O'Neil On this episode of the “Nausicaa Cast” podcast, presented by Powder Radio, host Hadley Hammer interviews ski mountaineer Hilaree O’Neill. One of the most adventurous women in the outdoor sphere, she has made first descents all over the world. In 1996, O’Neill headed to Chamonix with plans to stay a few months. Ultimately, she stayed for six years, competing in (and winning) some of the early freeskiing competitions and opening her eyes to an emerging world of skiing. “I think what worked in my favor the most was total ignorance,” says O’Neill. “I moved there not thinking I was going to make my whole life skiing and climbing mountains.” Bio She’s skied from the Himalayan summit of Cho Oyu in Tibet and climbed and skied several high peaks in Bolivia and Argentina. Elsewhere, she’s cut turns on remote volcanoes in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, in Mongolia, Pakistan, Lebanon, as well as many first descents in the tight couloirs of Baffin Island. Born and raised in the Northwest, Hilaree began skiing at age 3 at Steven’s Pass in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Eventually she moved to the Chamonix Valley of France where she learned most of what she needed to know in order to take her skiing skills to the next level- ski mountaineering. In addition to her travels as an athlete for The North Face, Hilaree is a mother to two young boys, and although they have changed her life dramatically, her passion for the mountains has not abated. Hilaree lives with her family in Telluride, Colorado and finds her sanity in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Follow Hilaree Instagram Facebook Read

Hadley Hammer is a pro skier on the Freeride World Tour with a very appropriate last name. Growing up in Jackson, WY, Hadley was brought up in the mountains, spending all her time chasing her brothers around the Tetons. While a pro skiing career consumes much of her time, Hadley is also a sommelier and gourmet chef. She attended quite possibly the best school in this nation, University of New Hampshire (Ben's alma mater, hence the bias), and received a B.A. in hospitality and a minor in economics.
