Mikayo Mundy could still be technically be considered an up and comer on the cable scene, but he's been around for over a decade. Recently, Mikayo has just been getting back into riding after taking some time off due to injury, and his journey to rediscover wakeboarding, and what it means to him, is a fascinating one. Benni Suess has done more for the sport of cable wakeboaridng in Germany than just about any one individual. Benni and his family opened up one of the first cable parks in Germany, and they have continued to expand their operations since the parks inception in 1976. While Benni got his start at 4 years old on a pair of skis, and did pursue competitive waterskiing, it was when wakeboarding came around that he felt at home. With both contest results and video parts under his belt as a rider, Benni has just about seen it all when it comes to cable wakeboarding. Born in Haiti and then raised in Germany as a boat rider, Wanley has one of the most interesting stories in wakeboarding today. Josh Letchworth has worked with some of the biggest celebrities and brands out there, but before he broke into these other industries he was regarded as one of the best wakeboard photographers to pick up a camera. Josh got a later start than some other photographers, not really diving deep into photography until after college, where he began shooting live music. Once rooted in Miami, the Zuupack members have now spread out across the country, with Maxx being one of the last to remain where the group started. Danny Harf was the first rider to ever land a 1260, won the X Games 3 times in a row (4 total), invented the Blind Pete, won ROTY, and racked up countless other accolades over his 2 decade career in wakeboarding. In this episode, my guest is Zahra Kell, a 4X world champion professional wakeboarder and former competitive snowboarder. We explore her incredible journey from riding behind her father's wakeboard at just one year old to becoming a seven-time Australian champion by age 13 and eventually winning the World Championship in the pro division. Zahra shares the mental fortitude required to compete at the highest level, including her strategies for overcoming serious injuries - from concussions to fractures - and continuing to perform under pressure. We discuss the psychology of fear, particularly when attempting the same trick that just resulted in a painful crash, and how repetition builds the muscle memory that allows athletes to perform even when their conscious mind is compromised. Additionally, we examine the unique aspects of wakeboarding as a sport, Zahra's competitive nature that extends beyond the water, and how she balances intense training with recovery. Gavin Stuckey is easily one of the biggest names in cable wakeboarding right now, meaning one of the Stuckey brothers is an odds on favorite to win just about every contest they enter. It would be hard to argue that anyone single person has done more for the sport of wakeboarding, both on the water and off, than Parks Bonifay. You can tell he lives, eats, and breathes this lifestyle, and it shows. Parks was the youngest person to ever waterski, invented several tricks, filmed tons of video parts, won even more contests, and has pushed the boundaries of what is possible on a wakeboard. Back to back weeks with wakeskaters on the pod? You're damn right. T.J. has been around the wakeskate scene for what feels like forever. Getting started wakeboarding behind a small Boston Whaler, T.J. quickly shifted to wakeskating once he realized he and his friends would need a much bigger boat if they wanted continue to progress on their wakeboards. Who has won the most wakeboard contests? Who has invented the most tricks? Who has signed one of the largest contracts in wakeboardings history? The answer to all of those questions is Darin Shapiro. Darin got started in watersports before wakeboarding as we know it was even a thing. Starting at the cable, Darin took countless laps on a trick ski, and barefooting, but it wasn't until “ski boarding” came around that he really started to find some success. Darin was flown out by Herb O'Brien to a contest in Hawaii in 1991, and from there Darins journey in the sport began and had no signs of slowing down. Winning over 70 pro contests, inventing countless tricks, starring in 2 video games, signing one of wakeboardings largest contracts, the speedball, and retiring twice. What does the future of cable riding look like in America? In this episode we sit down with the Director of Operations at Aktion Parks, Kellan Rudnicki. Kellan got into wakeboarding at Ski Rixen, after initially trying to learn how to kiteboard and getting told he needs to hit the cable to learn board control first. Once falling in love with the sport, Kellan restarted the wakeboard club at his college UCF, then took a job out of the industry after graduating. Eventually an opportunity arose to get back into cable park ops, and Kellan worked his way back into the world of wakeboarding. Getting started wakeboarding behind the boat on a lake in Minnesota, Quinn knew he loved it.
