Send us Fan MailThe fitness industry makes money when you fail. Troy Taylor spent 20 years at the top of Olympic sport, and now he's the reason Tonal keeps 99% of its members while the rest of the industry churns through them like a revolving door.He and Kevin don't talk about motivation. They talk about why motivation is the wrong thing to chase, what the actual data says about how people build a training habit that sticks, and why everything you've been told about starting a fitness program is probably backwards."It doesn't matter whether you start high or low. What mattered was a little more in week two, a little more in week three, a little more in week four."Troy worked with Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn. The thing that made them exceptional? They showed up more than everyone else and worked on the things they were bad at. That's it. No secret sauce. The same principle wrecks most people's January gym resolution, and the data proves it.This one covers the behavioral science behind exercise adherence, why your first week should be embarrassingly easy, how an hour a week of lifting might be all you need, and what a VP of Performance Innovation actually does when he has 10 minutes and a deadline.Find Troy at @StrengthScienceTroy on Instagram and learn more about Tonal at tonal.com.Instagram: @kevinwhitemdYouTube: @kevinwhitemd Prime Health Associates

Send us Fan MailThe Olympic moments we never forget are rarely just about the score. They are about nerves, timing, pressure, and the weird way one perfect run or one impossible upset can turn into a lifelong memory you can replay on demand. We're back with one of our favorite formats: a Top 10 countdown of the most iconic U.S. Olympic moments in history. We go sport by sport and era by era, from Mary Lou Retton's trailblazing gymnastics gold to Simone Biles' dominance, from Florence Griffith Joyner's still-unbroken sprint records to Michael Phelps rewriting what “greatest swimming performance” even means. We also dig into track and field greatness like Alison Felix and Carl Lewis, then step into Olympic history with Jesse Owens in Berlin and why that moment still carries weight far beyond medals.Of course, we argue about the order, because you can't talk Olympics without debate. We break down why the Miracle on Ice remains the gold standard for underdog stories, then hit honorable mentions like Kerri Strug's 1996 vault and Muhammad Ali lighting the Atlanta torch. Matt also brings in winter Olympic takes, including a heartfelt nod to Mikaela Shiffrin, plus a very opinionated skiing vs snowboarding etiquette segment that every mountain regular will recognize. We also share a quick community “winner of the week” story that hits the same theme of people showing up for each other, and we spotlight Buddy from Detroit Dog Rescue who needs a home. If you like Olympic highlights, U.S. Olympic history, and the stories behind iconic gold medal moments, you'll have your own list by the end. Over 100 wins. Youngest slalom gold medalist ever. More than a decade at the absolute top.And she's still in disbelief about all of it.The moment that stopped me: when she thinks "I want to win," she never wins. Other athletes can win just by wanting it badly enough. For her, wanting to win is the kiss of death. So what does she think about instead? Making really good turns. That's her entire philosophy. She even calls it boring. But that boring focus built the greatest skiing career in history. She figured this out at age eight, watching her idol Bode Miller get torn apart after disappointing Olympic performances. She saw how pressure and public opinion crushed even the greatest athletes. Right then, she decided: focus on the craft, ignore the glory. That decision protected her from the thing that destroys most champions—believing their own hype.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Leave an Amazon Rating or Review for my New York Times Bestselling book, Make Money Easy!Check out the full episode: https://greatness.lnk.to/1470Mikaela Shiffrin won almost every race by over two seconds in her breakthrough season. The next year, when she won by six tenths of a second, people said she was getting slow. The victory itself wasn't questioned, but suddenly winning alone wasn't good enough. She had to win by more. This shift created something she'd never experienced before: performance anxiety so severe she was vomiting at the start of almost every race. Not from fear of losing, but from fear of the disappointment that came with not exceeding expectations that had become completely unrealistic. Even people closest to her would say things like "it'd be so great if you could just stomp on this race." She knew the expectations weren't realistic, but she didn't know how to explain that. So she raced anyway, and people took four to five years to catch up to the fact that her early dominance was a moment in time, not a permanent standard. The breakthrough came from recognizing that exhaustion isn't weakness. After winning her 85th World Cup victory, everyone assumed number 86 the next day was a done deal. But she'd raced seven times in ten days across Europe. She was mentally and emotionally disconnected, not because she lacked skill or drive, but because she was human and tired. Sometimes you just need one recovery day. She's learned to recognize when expectations are unrealistic, when media questions are trying to insinuate feelings rather than ask honestly, and most importantly, that people will eventually catch up. Excellence doesn't mean you have to exceed impossible standards every single time. Sometimes winning by six tenths is still extraordinary, even if two seconds was once possible.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
