To be honest, the idea of a loved-one being 'brought back to life' using Al (images, video, audio) to create a virtual post-death version of that person, who can 'talk to loved ones left behind, kind of creeps me out. But that's just me. For some people, it's apparently comforting and therapeutic. Patrick, Tiff and I cover quite a bit of ground in this episode and not surprisingly, a lot of it isn't about tech. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hi Team, our tech nerd is back and here's what came up this time... Smart sunglasses with a built-in video camera/recorder that's recording you when you don't know; what could possibly go wrong? Jobs falling by the wayside as Al becomes the new much-cheaper 'preferred employee' for many companies. Nuclear batteries the size of a coin that will last without charging for a hundred years. Panic buying of vibrators (blame Patrick for that topic, not me). Why (some) people trust ChatGPT more than a lawyer for legal advice. Used EV batteries being repurposed to power homes, land plenty more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
According to Patrick, in the near future he and I will be buying twin four-legged, hydrogen-powered, robots designed by Kawasaki to be ridden by humans. He calls them 'rideable robotic wolves'. At this point I'd rather be sitting on a good old-fashioned noisy dirt bike that can't think for itself but I guess we'll see how it all goes. We also talk about speaking with dolphins (thanks to Al), modern Monopoly (the kid's game), the dangerous games and toys that existed when I was a kid, tech to help me become more of a handyman, a specific sound that cures motion sickness, Katy Perry in space (or was she?) and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of TYP, we chat with our resident Technophile Patrick (and Tiff) and we explore self-driving cars (they're on the way), Tesla bonfires, creepy glasses that film people unknowingly, "hi Mum" phone scams, Apple vs. Microsoft, iPads for cat therapy (really), Al designed to replace creative humans doing creative jobs, 23andMe go broke and people worry about their private data (DNA stuff!) and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Well, I don’t know how we ended up here, but somehow, this episode of Roll With The Punches went deep (maybe too deep) into the intricacies of sleep habits, morning routines, global poo etiquette, and the unexpected life lessons that come from learning new things as an adult. As always when Patrick swoons in our chats are anything but conventional. As we dive headfirst into a topic nobody saw coming - the science of squatting, bidets, and how different cultures approach their bathroom business. Turns out, Patrick has done extensive research into the art of the squat toilet, and I might have just ordered myself a Squatty Potty mid-conversation. Who knew bowel mechanics would be such a hot topic? But it’s not all toilet talk (promise). We also explore something that’s been on my mind a lot lately - learning new things as an adult. I share how I recently picked up the piano (yep, Aussie's most promising concert pianist in the making) and why stepping into a completely unfamiliar world has been both challenging and exhilarating. Patrick, on the other hand, took up singing during COVID and now performs with a choir, proving that it’s never too late to start something new. Tune in, have a laugh, and maybe walk away with a new perspective on learning, mindfulness, and, well… better toilet habits. The band's back together talking tech and this time we discuss the physical impact of living in zero gravity for a long time (after SpaceX just retrieved the stranded Astronauts), a new Chinese EV that can be charged for a driving range of 400km in just five minutes, car companies that are reverting to using actual buttons, switches and knobs (instead of screens only), Deepfakes being used to scam unsuspecting oldies (Ron and Mary types), a wearable camera that helps blind people 'see', Patrick's obsession with a new 'Al' pen, the cognitive benefits of writing with a pen (vs. typing on a keyboard) and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
According to our resident Tai Chi-teaching, tech-obsessed, loveable, father-of-one (Fritz the wonder Schnauzer), more and more people are making an 'appointment' with 'Dr. ChatGPT' (or similar) to diagnose and treat whatever ails them. Of course, it seems like a terrible idea as Al gets stuff wrong but then, so do humans. Humans also get tired, hungry and distracted but Al doesn't. Personally, I'll keep consulting my human option but Al is certainly opening us all up to a new world of virtual possibilities. Tiff, Patrick and I chat about this and lots more in today's episode. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Technology scares the crap out of Mary Harper. It's a language she doesn't speak, a skill she doesn't have and at eighty-five, she doesn't want to learn it and I don't blame her. For people like my mum, even having a conversation with someone who lacks awareness, patience and/or empathy (a person in a business or on the end of a phone call perhaps) can result in confusion, frustration, embarrassment and even anxiety. For the 3.1 million Aussies aged 70 and above, the ever-shifting technological landscape can be terrifying. As always, this is a fun chat with our resident nerd, boxer and potty-mouthed host. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Patrick Bonello is back and stepping into the conversational ring with me for a tussle on all things life, habits, hacks and games. From the psychology of fighting, to how muscle memory shapes our habits, we break down the unconscious ways our bodies and minds adapt. Patrick takes me down a rabbit hole of juggling, VR gaming, and Tai Chi, while I try to convince him that boxing isn’t just about getting hit in the head (well, mostly). We riff on brain training, human behavior, resilience, and why rock climbing is probably safer than netball. Plus, Patrick flexes his questionable but hilarious voice impression skills, and I leave this convo convinced I need to start juggling balls. It’s a ride. It’s a laugh. And if nothing else, you’ll walk away with a fresh appreciation for the way your brain plays the game of life... whether you realise it or not. The Tai Chi-teaching, vegetable-consuming, tech-obsessed geek is back in town and this time we talk about 'digital shoplifting’, Instagram's New Video-Editing App, Tesla sales falling through the floor, the predicted lifespan of electric cars, the self-healing road that fixes its own potholes (really), China's chatbot juggernaut (DeepSeek), GhostGPT (cybercrime Al used by crooks), smart video doorbells and Patrick tries to sell me on the idea of cultivated (lab grown) meat. Hard pass thanks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Like most episodes with Patrick, Tiff and Harps, this instalment is a conversational ship without a rudder. Sure we cover some tech stuff like the evolution of 3-D printing and its criminal applications, facial recognition tech being used on the general public at the Aussie Open, a 'mirror' that provides us with real-time health updates, the UK Ministry of Defence enlisting sci-fi writers to prepare for dystopian futures, Al being used to voice audio books (it's already happening), Norway's decision to go fully electric (cars), Patrick’s emotional relationship with the scales and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Just two nerds just chatting about nerd stuff. Sure, we're different kinds of nerds but nonetheless, that's what this episode is. Will traditional TV's disappear? The good and potential bad of glasses with built-in video cameras. Haptic suits which allow us to give someone a virtual and physical hug from thousands of miles away. USB cables that can hide hacker hardware. Scientists growing a backbone in a lab. All that and more (as they say).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Did you know that gym tailgating is a thing? Is the practice of non-gym members (at gyms which use swipe card access and are mostly unstaffed) following a member (with a card) into the centre, either with or without that member's knowledge or consent. While this episode was intended to be a tech chat (as it usually is), Patrick and I found ourselves meandering through very eclectic range of topics and stories. I enjoyed it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode of TYP, Tiff and I got to meet Patrick's new friend who, despite being Al, was able to have an extremely real-sounding 'conversation' with our resident nerd mid-podcast and when I say 'extremely' real-sounding, I mean it's honestly hard to believe the evolution of 'Al conversation' , even over the last six months. Within a very short time, it will be almost impossible to distinguish between a human-to-human chat and a human-to-Al 'chat' (purely from an audio recording perspective). And that's both exciting and terrifying. We also chatted about a bazillion other things. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Patrick slices virtual targets in half with his virtual sword, in a virtual world, while wearing his virtual reality goggles and then wonders why I hesitate to pay him a visit. 12,688 - that's how many unread emails I have in my inbox and for some amusing (to me) reason, it gives Patrick anxiety. I should probably be concerned but he seems to be doing a great job, so l'll leave the worry to him and save myself some energy. This episode was the usual informal, freestyle, periodically-inappropriate affair, masquerading as an episode about tech. You've been warned.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Righto, legends, buckle up because today, I'm rolling into a conversation with our good friend Patrick Bonello. If you've tuned in before, you know Patrick's not just any guest - he's one of those mates who brings a whole mix of laughter, deep thought, and the kind of tangents that make you wonder how you ended up laughing so hard in the first place. This ep? It's all about the unexpected magic you find when you let go of the need to control everything. Patrick and I dive into our recent 'travels' - mine to India and his, well, into the world of life drawing as a model! Also, if you've ever thought staring into someone's eyes for five minutes was intense, try doing it in a place where neither of you speaks the same language. Or, better yet, imagine letting a bunch of strangers draw every detail of you in a life drawing class. We chat about the thrill of finding connection in strange places, how stripping back the layers (sometimes literally) can teach you more about yourself, and why we both believe in embracing those out-of-the-blue interactions that shape who we are. Get ready for a chat that'll leave you both chuckling and contemplating some big questions. Like, who's in your circle, and are they bringing out the best in you? This episode is a shoutout to anyone who's ready to say yes to life's curveballs, connect with people on a deeper level, and maybe even let go of a bit of that control we all cling to. If there was any doubt about Patrick's sanity, everything is cleared up in this episode, when he chats about the thousand plus movies he has on Blu Ray (individually purchased for $20 plus). The resident TYP geek (Patrick) is back scaring, warning and informing us about all-things technology, including the impending global energy catastrophe, killer robot vacuums that are spying on us in our homes, why Goggle is 'going nuclear', user-friendly tech for our senior citizens, our ever-diminishing personal privacy and my car that tells me to take a nap. On a less-technological front, Patrick chats about his brother who has special needs, I talk about an awesome young lady I met at a recent gig and we explore the possibility of dogs being 'self-aware' Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This somewhat verbose edition of the show has been divided in two, for your own good. I don't want you consuming to much sugar in one sitting. You're welcome. This chat really covers a lot of territory, moving from Patrick's dating life, his pasty vegan complexion and his curious habit of watching scrolling works of art on his TV, to earth-ending asteroids, losing muscle in space, stand-up desks, shitty posture, fitness app obsession and out-of-warranty fridges. Allegedly, I may have given Patrick a hard time on the show. In the past. On occasion. Allegedly. Your Honour. Consequently, today was a shot at retribution for him and he took it. And if I'm being honest and self-aware - as I try to be (but often in vain) - I probably deserved some of it. Okay, most. As always, this was a fun episode masquerading as conversation about tech, but when I tell you that Patrick's first 'tech topic' was about a company using Al to convert black and white vintage porn (from 1896. I mean really vintage!) into colour, you'll realise how low the tech bar was set. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This was another fun chat with Patrick and Tiff, and this time we opened the door on some of our favourite 'old tech', which at the time was groundbreaking and mind-blowing, but looking back through the 2024 window, well.. not so much. As usual, there was an unnecessary amount of silly-ness, banter and bullsh*t, which for some strange reason, some of you seem to enjoy more than the (alleged) 'tech talk'.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you're after some brain food, philosophical insights, groundbreaking wisdom or personal development gold, you definitely shouldn't listen to this. Patrick Bonello is a self-confessed tech nerd, a creative, a Tai Chi teacher, an entrepreneur, an identical twin, a radio host, a lover of dorky knitted sweaters, and someone I have grown to dearly love bantering with due to his broad range of knowledge, interests and experience. So yeah, in a nutshell Patrick is a dead-set legend! Today we are 'freeballing it', as he calls it, and talk about life. I quiz Patrick around his experiences on finding balance, starting businesses, getting bullied at school and how it influenced him positively and negatively, being hard on ourselves (ok, that one might have been more on me), and being blessed with the role of dog guardian. Is it human art or Al art? And if it is Al art, is it actually art? Was it written by a human or a Bot? Is it inspired creativity or 'programmed' creativity? Did he do the assignment or did ChatGPT do it? Is it a real photo or an image generated to look like a photo? Is the 'information' I'm getting through Al actual (accurate, objective) information or is it a 'story' about something, designed to influence the thinking of the researcher/reader in a certain way? Is it a legitimate opportunity, or is it a well-crafted scam? Is this a real link, or is it a pathway to my financial ruin? For better or worse, reality is becoming harder and harder to discern. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
For many people who didn't grow up with tech, the unavoidable and ever-increasing integration of Al, online everything, cashless transactions and virtual worlds is a great source of confusion, discomfort and anxiety. My eighty-five-year-old parents feel like they're living on Mars and the world is becoming alien to them. The idea of not being able to pay bills with cash or a cheque has caused my mum more than a few sleepless nights and considerable anxiety. And in other news... as always, this chat with Patrick and Tiff was of a conversational smorgasbord of bullsh*t, banter and a smattering of tech-talk. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Honestly, this chat was mayhem. It's fair to say that Patrick let himself, the team and the entire geek community down with his tardiness, his lack of preparation and his fraudulent behaviour, in trying to take credit for the work of a fifteen-year-old work experience kid. He's now on his first official warning and I may even have to dock his pay. What's fifty percent of zero anyway? Other than that, we had fun. This episode ain't for everyone but then, neither am I.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
*Anthropomorphise (v.): to attribute human characteristics or behaviour to non-human entities. What do you think about the idea of people building ‘relationships' with Al? Having a non-human ‘friend' where it's possible to have, what seems to be (on an experiential level), a human-like meaningful conversation, connection and exchange, that literally makes someone who's lonely, isolated, sad, anxious and/or socially disconnected feel better? Happier? Less worried? A relationship that (as weird as it seems to us right now) makes their life experience more tolerable? Less painful? I'm already 'having conversations' with ChatGPT 4.0 which, to be honest, are not too far removed from the experience of having a phone conversation with someone who's much smarter than me! All that and more (with Patrick and Tiff) on today's ep. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Apart from the fact that Patrick is gay and Tiff has massive trust issues with men, they are a match made in heaven. They met each other (in person) for the first time last weekend and both of them (unbeknown to each other) individually told me how much of a crush they have on the other. With that intel on board, you can imagine how much fun I had when the three of us showed up for this little virtual chin-wag. I even offered to finance their wedding. The Tai Chi-teaching, rural living, nature loving, tech geek, father of one (dog) is back, and this time we chat about the potential ban on kids under sixteen accessing social media, the pros and cons of our current digital world, the first bloke to have a Neuralink implant, how the new super-dooper Al programs aren't always super or dooper, headphones that allow you to clearly hear an individual voice (the person your chatting with) by blocking out all the other voices in a noisy room (I want those), a self-balancing motorcycle (ridiculous but Patrick loves the idea) and China's new robot dog that comes complete with a machine gun on its back. What could go wrong? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of TYP, Patrick shows how easily someone can 'steal our voice' and misrepresent us, using Al to 'say things' that we've never said (if you know what I mean). Unknown to me, he showed up to our chat with a bunch of pre-recorded, Al-generated statements using my voice, that he proceeded to wheel out through the course of our 'actual' conversation. Even though it was all in fun, it's also kind of terrifying to realise that with just a 30-second audio sample of my voice (or yours), people with bad intentions can potentially create havoc. Even more terrifying when you consider the fact that this technology is improving exponentially and pretty soon, it will be almost impossible to know what audio (and video) is and isn't authentic. I don't even know where to start with writing a synopsis for this episode, so l'm just gonna say that it was amusing, inappropriate, funny (IMO) and not particularly educational or life-changing. Ep. 239: Bertrand Bonello on The Beast, Experimenting with AI, Crafting Melodrama, Reading Henry James, and more Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Bertrand Bonello's latest film The Beast has been melting minds with its time-skipping saga of star-crossed lovers and strangers played by Léa Seydoux and George Mackay. Inspired by a Henry James story, The Beast spans three different time periods and pairings: a married woman and a suitor in the 1910s (Belle Époque), an actress and a madman in 2010's California, and a woman facing a fateful choice in a not-too-distant future where artificial intelligence promises to remove individual trauma. I chatted with the restless French auteur (Nocturama, Saint Laurent) about the struggle for connection across these stories, being tempted by AI, directing Mackay and Seydoux, and more. The Beast is in theaters now, and Bonello's previous feature, Coma, will have its first U.S. theatrical run on May 17. This week we're excited to present a conversation with Léa Seydoux, lead actress of the 61t New York Film Festival Main Slate selection The Beast, which will open in our theaters on April 5. The Beast opens at FLC next Friday, April 5 View showtimes and get tickets at filmlinc.org/beast A filmmaker consistently unafraid to wade through the weird miasma of contemporary life, Bertrand Bonello (Nocturama; Coma, NYFF60) works from the outside in, dramatizing the psychological toll of the political and cultural world around us. Here he has created a dynamic and disturbing parable that jumps between three different time periods (1910, 2014, and 2044) to diagnose our acute—and perhaps eternal—feelings of estrangement and alienation. Using Henry James's haunting 1903 short story “The Beast in the Jungle” as his film's provocative inspiration, Bonello tells the story of a young woman (Léa Seydoux) who undergoes a surgical process to have her DNA—and therefore memories of all her past lives—removed. In so doing, she realizes her fate has long been intertwined, for better and worse, with a young man (George MacKay). Touching on modern anxieties of AI and incel culture, which may recur throughout history as commonly as love and hate, The Beast, like all good science-fiction, asks essential questions about the ever-shifting status of humanity itself. An NYFF61 Main Slate selection. A Sideshow and Janus Films release. This conversation was moderated by FLC's Vice President of Programming Florence Almozini.
But enough about my school reports. If this conversation could be represented on a map of Australia and our destination from Melbourne was Sydney, then Patrick and I drove to the Harbour Bridge via Perth. We eventually arrived at our intended verbal destination but only after we'd taken a swim at Cottesloe Beach. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Also known as scammers, schemers and hackers... cyber-thieves (as I call them) are scum (as I also call them) who want to rip off your mum, your grandma, your kids and of course, you. TYP's very own Tiff got hacked this week and so we fired a few timely questions at our resident geek and spoke about a few personal security strategies. We also covered how Al is now conducting job interviews, Patrick's mate who claimed his porn expenses as a tax deduction (wait till you hear the rationale), people opening tech-free cafes (zero phones or devices allowed), customers complaining about the lack of buttons, knobs and dials in modern cars, why electric cars might not be the environmental hero after all, what NASA and Google are doing to save tigers (there's only 4,500 left) and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
