In this week's episode, I discussed how Donald Trump's plan to send migrants to the wrong country was denied and the implications of that decision. It was a deep dive into the controversy surrounding his immigration strategies and the legal and political obstacles that came with it. I also covered Erykah Badu's stunning look at the awards this week. She wore an outfit that gave off major vibes of an African fertility goddess. The goddess, often depicted as the nurturing and life-giving force, represents fertility, abundance, and the cycle of life. Erykah's choice to channel this goddess not only highlighted her bold fashion sense but also paid homage to African culture and its powerful symbolism. Tune in for a breakdown of both topics and much more!

Last time on the pod we discussed Erykah's left brain album and today we have it's counterpart in her right brain album, New Amerykah Pt. 2, that arrived two years after New Amerykah Pt. 1. While it continues to have mixes from some of the best underground producers in the game, this one gets a little more personal. In "Return of the Ankh", she dissects all of her relationships--with her lovers, with her fans, with money, and with herself; and creates a hip hop classic while doing so. Today we're talking about none other than the First Lady of Neo Soul. If you've ever wondered how hip hop of the 2010s got so groovy, look no further than New Amerykah. With her eclectic style and taste in music, she brings us everything from 70s funk to 90s R&B and everything in-between. After a several year hiatus due to writer's block, Erykah, with the help of some of hip-hops best producers, she came back strong with this record and remains somewhere near the top of mount hip-hop. I recently came across an interview with singer-songwriter and creative maverick Erykah Badu on YouTube. Her words were so impactful for me in this phase of my recovery journey that I knew I had to make an episode that included my favorite clips. Although she came from humble beginnings, Erykah's “mutable” and child-like approach to life has unlocked a lifetime and career of possibilities. This episode will make you feel like you're sitting down with your best friend, giving you the tough love that you may not want, but desperately need. Check out the time stamps below for a more detailed breakdown of the topics covered. TIME STAMPS 00:00 – 7:32: Introduction (who is Erykah Badu and why I believe her attitude towards life is so inspiring)7:28 – 8:17: The importance of looking forward to the future, rather than dreading it 8:17 – 15:31: How Erykah Badu views the development of a solid sense of self and identity (the importance of becoming “mutable,” or more flexible rather than rigid in life)15:31 – 20:16: On not letting the opinions of others influence you or deter you from doing what you want, and learning to pace yourself 20:16 – 23:14: on facing the sexism and importance placed on looks in the music industry and mainstream media in the 90s23:14 – 27:45: The advice Erykah Badu would give her “naïve” younger self (how to not become influenced by the thoughts and feelings of others)27:45 – 31:31: How hip hop culture helped Erykah Badu cultivate her creative identity and confidence31:31 – 34:53: How Erykah's focus on “reinvention” and metamorphosis is her primary driver34:53 – 39:07: Erykah's advice on style and aesthetics (how to cultivate your own unique style)39:07 – 48:21: Where does the word “woke” come from and how has it evolved? (How Erykah Badu including this in her song “Master Teacher” and tweeting it out regarding the scandal surrounding Russian activist group Pussy Riot gave the word “woke” a life of its own)48:21 – 52:42: Why Erykah Badu believes we should avoid putting ourselves in “boxes” and the way labels can keep us stuck in rigid forms that don't allow for growth and metamorphosis52:42 – 57:26: On the importance of staying child-like while she unlearns toxic behaviors and stays conscious in her role as a mother57:26 – 01:02:02: How Erykah uses her art and creativity to transmute and transform the wounds from generational trauma01:02:02 – 01:05:21: Why we shouldn't copy the path of others and the importance of finding our own way in life (ikigai philosophy) 01:05:21 – 01:15:38: The best and worst advice Erykah Badu has ever received (reflections on the hermetic principal “as above, so below”)RESOURCESClick here to the full interview on YouTube (“Mavericks with Ari Melber: Erykah Badu,” March 29th, 2023)Background instrumentals by Noizy BeatsBFTB EXTRAS TO SUPPORT MY WORK, JOIN THE COMMUNITY OF PREMIUM SUBMARINES ON PATREON.[You can also find this link by visiting my website at backfromtheborderline.com] 15% OFF PURE SPECTRUM CBD PRODUCTS AT purespectrumcbd.com/BFTB acast+ audio-only listener benefits https://plus.acast.com/s/back-from-the-borderline. Starlight Thursdays Episode 180, Lets welcome Sticky People AKA The Backseat DJ to the series!!! We'er super happy to have this good vibing house mix in the collection. It's been fantastic getting to know him and experiencing his work not only as a DJ and music producer but also as a the brains behind “The Rainbow Fade” sound camp at Forest Creatures 6. How long have you been DJing? 22 years Why did you get into it? I was trying to get a job as a bartender at a bar and grill that had a dance floor, but they needed a DJ. I had never wanted to be a DJ prior to that, but I was a musician that could recognize a wall full of amps and geeky A/V gear, so I took the Job What events have you played? I put together a stage (The Rainbow Fade) at Forest Creatures 6, as well as a Jam Camp (The Jam Clam) at Saguaro Man 2013. I got to do an epic 7+ hour set at the Lost Lizard Lounge at Saguaro Man 2012. It was probably the best night of my life. I did a hip hop sunrise set that morning and I think it might have worked. I cut my teeth in a top 40 club that didn't know what it wanted to be, so I got to learn mixing with corporate-approved cdr's in a bar and grill that sold boneless wings until 10pm and lots of people danced to my very first attempts at “around the world” with madonna's - “Music”. The first time I ever attempted producing my own mashup, the ingredients were the chemical brothers, eiffel 65, depeche mode and goddamn Jimmy Eat World. I ended one saturday night with that mashup and some girl came up to my booth to tell me that the last song I played was the worst thing she'd ever heard! Where are you from? Missoula by way of Phoenix, Venezuela, and Richland What inspires you about DJing? When you see people in the room react to a rhythm. Even if you aren't necessarily into what's happening and you're just trying to figure things out, and then you see someone reacting and it fuels your next move What inspires you about electronic music culture? The closer i get to the subwoofers, the more things seem to make sense What genres are in your mix? House, bossa nova, breaks, garage, downtempo A few words about your mix? I love Erykah badu. I put together a bunch of other stuff that I'd discovered and dug in the last couple years to build a mix with Badu sitting right in the middle of it. The mix with Badu is probably the best mix i've ever discovered and pulled off. You should use it. For real. Anything else you want us to know? It is Thursday on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast and we have some news for you. Mike Pence at his Town Hall meeting last night, has made a line in the sand with his former boss, Donald Trump. He said anyone who puts themself over the Constitution, does not deserve to be president. In other news, Susan Lorincz, was arrested in Florida for killing a black mother, Ajike Owens through her front door in front of one of her children. Lorincz has been charged with manslaughter. Owens leaves behind four children. Wendy Williams' manager said that Wendy is in a wellness center trying to get better. The manager also said that the claims that her son made that Williams' team is taking advantage is not true. Zion Williamson is having a baby with former dancer Ahkeema. She has been posting about lavish shopping sprees and saying that she will be a stay at home mom. But adult entertainer Mariah Mills has been exposing Zion Williamson for saying that she is also dating the NBA star. Jeff Johnson joined The RSMS Crew to tell us Three Things We Need to Know. Johnson talked about the arrest of Susan Lorincz and the murder of Ajike Owens. The problem with this issue is that her children are blaming themselves for the act of a hateful person who took their toys and electronic devices. The family of Owens do not believe manslaughter is not enough and hope that the charge goes up to murder two. Please visit justiceforajowens.org to get justice for Owens and support her children. Erykah Badu joined The RSMS Crew. She talked about her new tour, The Unfollow Me Tour. Well they tried to get to talk about the tour but Erykah was getting on Rickey Smiley. From an early age, Erykah Pasha '24 has been driven to provide a voice for those who have been systematically oppressed and suppressed in her hometown of Syracuse, and she always knew Syracuse University was where she wanted to study. Enrolling in the dual degree political science and sociology program in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the College of Arts and Sciences, Pasha credits the University for providing her with the resources and, more importantly, the opportunities to effect change. On this 'Cuse Conversation, Pasha, a Kessler Scholar and McNair Scholar, discusses her research, how she hopes to create change through this summer experience and how her time on campus helped her find her voice. As Pride Month is celebrated across the country, Pasha, who identifies as queer, shares how both the Intercultural Collective and the LGBTQ Resource Center play a pivotal role in her development as a campus leader and how the programs and engagement efforts offered through the LGBTQ Resource Center created a home-away-from-home atmosphere.
On March 21, 2020, three-year-old Erykah Taylor arrived at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, unresponsive. Shortly after her arrival, she was pronounced dead. Based on her injuries, which included bone fractures and multiple bruises, police did not believe the story they heard from Tonny Manns, the live-in boyfriend of Erykah's mother and Erykah's caretaker at the time she was fatally injured. After Erykah's five-year-old sister told investigators what she witnessed, Tonny was arrested and charged with capital murder of a person under ten. This is the story of a funny, sweet little girl with a huge, sunny personality whose family feels her loss every day. It's also the story of a bully of a man who got away with the murder of a toddler with a mere slap on the wrist. You'll also hear my conversation with Erykah's paternal grandmother, Andrei “Kookie” Harris, an amazing lady who is devoted to keeping her granddaughter's memory alive. This is the heartbreaking story of Erykah Taylor.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodYou can also follow the podcast on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/sufferthelittlechildrenpodcast Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpod My Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 15, 2022 is: cadence KAY-dunss noun Cadence is used to refer to various rhythmic or repeated motions, activities, or patterns of sound, or to a falling inflection of the voice. // Stephanie relaxed at the beach, listening to the cadence of the surf. // The files are updated at a regular cadence. // The drill sergeant counted cadence. See the entry > Examples: “The near four-minute track opens with [Erykah] Badu solemnly singing the words ‘this bitter land' as violin strings lament Erykah's emotional words. She goes on to sing in a legato cadence saying, ‘One with my soul / The fruit it bears / Leaves me so cold.'” — Amber McKynzie, Essence, 27 Oct. 2020 Did you know? A cadence is a rhythm, or a flow of words or music, in a sequence that is regular (or steady as it were). But lest we be mistaken, cadence also lends its meaning to the sounds of Mother Nature (such as birdsong) to be sure. Cadence comes from Middle English borrowed from Medieval Latin's own cadentia, a lovely word that means “rhythm in verse.” (You may also recognize a cadence cousin, sweet cadenza, as a word that is familiar in the opera universe.) And from there our cadence traces just a little further backward to the Latin verb cadere “to sound rhythmically, to fall.” Praise the rising and the falling of the lilting in our language, whether singing songs or rhyming or opining on it all.

A toilet shaped like Lars Ulrich is headed to a museum near you (if you live in Denmark). Plus, Grimes and Elon had a secret baby and named it after a sometimes vowel. Let's talk about manifestation! In a recent Facebook room hosted by Saweetie with Ari Lennox and Erykah Badu Saweetie asked Erykah for advice in manifesting success in their industry. She shared several gems, but briefly mentioned alignment. She unfortunately didn't have enough time to expand and I notice how often when people talk about manifestation on social media they fail to mention how important alignment is when manifesting. So, let's talk about it. LuzCelenia also shares some other manifestation hacks that she's personally uses on her journey,“When you trust the person that makes the promise, you can rejoice before you actually get the blessing.” @pastorypj on InstagramExpress gratitude for what you already have and now for what is comingCelebrate having it before you even see it or touch itShare with someone who can celebrate and join their faith with yours that it's coming.Trust it will come at the appointed timeSupport the show
