In this episode of The New Quantum Era podcast, host Sebastian Hassinger speaks with Steve Girvin, professor of physics at Yale University, about quantum memory - a critical but often overlooked component of quantum computing architecture. This episode was created with support from the American Physical Society and Quantum Circuits, Inc.Episode HighlightsIntroduction to Quantum Memory: Steve explains that quantum memory is essential for quantum computers, similar to how RAM functions in classical computers. It serves as intermediate storage while the CPU works on other data.Coherence Challenges: Quantum bits (qubits) struggle to faithfully hold information for extended periods. Quantum memory faces both bit flips (like classical computers) and phase flips (unique to quantum systems). The Fundamental Theorem: Steve notes there's “no such thing as too much coherence” in quantum computing - longer coherence times are always beneficial.Quantum Random Access Memory (QRAM): Unlike classical RAM, QRAM can handle quantum superpositions, allowing it to process multiple addresses simultaneously and create entangled states of addresses and their associated data.QRAM Applications: Quantum memory enables state preparation, construction of oracles, and processing of big data in quantum algorithms for machine learning and linear algebra.Tree Architecture: QRAM is structured like an upside-down binary tree with routers at each node. The “bucket brigade” approach guides quantum bits through the tree to retrieve data.Error Resilience: Surprisingly, the error situation in QRAM is less catastrophic than initially feared. With a million leaf nodes and 0.1% error rate per component, only about 1,000 errors would occur, but the shallow circuit depth (only requiring n hops for n address bits) makes the system more resilient.Dual-Rail Approach: Recent work by Danny Weiss demonstrates using dual resonator (dual-rail) qubits where a microwave photon exists in superposition between two boxes, achieving 99.9% fidelity for each hop in the tree.Historical Context: Steve draws parallels to early classical computing memory systems developed by von Neumann at Princeton's IAS, including mercury delay line memory and early fault tolerance concepts.Future Outlook: While building quantum memory presents significant challenges, Steve remains optimistic about progress, noting that improving base qubit quality first and then scaling is their preferred approach.Key ConceptsQuantum Memory: Storage for quantum information that maintains coherenceQRAM (Quantum Random Access Memory): Architecture that allows quantum superpositions of addresses to access corresponding dataCoherence Time: How long a qubit can maintain its quantum stateBucket Brigade: Method for routing quantum information through a tree structureDual-Rail Qubits: Encoding quantum information in the presence of a photon in one of two resonatorsReferencesWeiss, D.K., Puri, S., Girvin, S.M. Why games are still niche and not mainstream, and how journalism can help them gain cultural credibility. Mainstreaming and Game Journalism (MIT Press, 2023) addresses both the history and current practice of game journalism, along with the roles writers and industry play in conveying that the medium is a “mainstream” form of entertainment. Through interviews with reporters, David B. Nieborg and Maxwell Foxman retrace how the game industry and journalists started a subcultural spiral in the 1980s that continues to this day. Digital play became increasingly exclusionary by appealing to niche audiences, relying on hardcore fans and favoring the male gamer stereotype. At the same time, this culture pushed journalists to the margins, leaving them toiling to find freelance gigs and deeply ambivalent about their profession. Mainstreaming and Game Journalism also examines the bumpy process of what we think of as “mainstreaming.” The authors argue that it encompasses three overlapping factors. First, for games to become mainstream, they need to become more ubiquitous through broader media coverage. Second, an increase in ludic literacy, or how-to play games, determines whether that greater visibility translates into accessibility. Third, the mainstreaming of games must gain cultural legitimacy. The fact that games are more visible does little if only a few people take them seriously or deem them worthy of attention. Ultimately, Mainstreaming and Game Journalism provocatively questions whether games ever will—or even should—gain widespread cultural acceptance. Episode 19 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode, Chuck and Danny discuss three critical issues: US-Israeli relations; Israel's policies regarding the war in Ukraine, and its domestic crisis. They also conduct a fascinating conversation with Abe Foxman, one of the great American Jewish leaders of our time. Both Chuck and Danny are concerned about growing tensions in US-Israeli relations. Chuck was concerned that a crisis, which was brewing in any event, has now been greatly exacerbated by the new government's policies towards the Palestinians and the “judicial reform” now underway. Danny is more hopeful that these differences can be managed. Chuck raises an interesting question, whether Netanyahu and Biden can work out a grand bargain: Netanyahu promises to keep a lid on the extremists in the new government, both on the Palestinian and domestic issues, in exchange for an American commitment to supply critical military capabilities that Israel needs to carry out a possible attack against the Iranian nuclear program (e.g. modern aerial tankers), if necessary, and at least partial backing for it.Chuck and Danny reverse their typical positions on the war in Ukraine. Danny is open to changes in Israel's positions and possible supply of weapons to Ukraine. Chuck takes the more hawkish position, that the same considerations that led Israel to limit its support for Ukraine to humanitarian aid, to date, have not changed and should not, unless Russia provides Iran with nuclear assistance.Foxman elaborated on his controversial recent statement, that his unconditional lifelong support for Israel has now become conditional. “We always said that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East...If just half of the coalition agreements happen, it will change the nature of democracy in Israel… If Israel is redefining who is a Jew, why would diaspora Jews identify with it?... American Jews love Israel, but if Israel doesn't love them back…”Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. The event will be held on on Monday, December 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center on Chapala Street in downtown Santa Barbara. When was the last time you personally experienced an act of anti-semitism? How often do you experience such things? I experience it every day on social media. I am constantly barraged with anti-semitic rhetoric, especially when I speak out to condemn anti-semitism, racism, or hate in general. We read that we are experiencing a spike in anti-semitic actions both in the United States and throughout the world. Here in Santa Barbara, this is not so evident, especially for those of us inclined not to see it — either because it's not happening in front of us or we think it's a settled matter. Please paint a picture of what is happening. The number of anti-semitic attacks in the United States is at an all-time high. FBI statistics report the highest number of religious hate crimes in the U.S.A. are directed at Jews. ADL statistics bear that out as well. It's the first time, in over a hundred years, since the lynching of Leo Frank, that Jews in the state of Georgia have been killed because they were Jews. This has also happened in Pittsburg, Poway, CA, and Jersey City. Jews have been assaulted in the streets of New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, and many others. Jewish students are harassed as Jews because they may support Israel and that happens on dozens of campuses in the United States. In Europe, Jews are constant targets of desecration of cemeteries, and synagogues are under constant security. Jews have been killed because they are Jews in France and other European countries. For Robert Foxman, this photograph has become family lore. It's a shot of hockey legend Guy Lafleur sporting a kippah, draped in a tallit and holding a siddur, as if in prayer. Foxman snapped the shot in 1981, when he was a 19-year-old photography student. Foxman showed up to a Montreal Canadiens practice and asked Lafleur, who, incredibly, agreed to pose for this kid he'd never met. Foxman has been reflecting on the encounter this week after Lafleur died from cancer at age 70. He considers the homegrown hockey hero and five-time Stanley Cup winner a true mensch—as do many other Canadian Jews, given the numerous Jewish fundraiser events Lafleur attended in Montreal to help the community. Foxman joins to share the story behind Guy Lafeur's most Jewish photo and explain what he hopes the Lafleur family takes away from it. "The way to do this is by recognizing the power of words. I don't mean fervently declaring one's position and arguing why those who disagree are wrong. There has been way too much of this, and health professionals are no exception. Rather what's needed to deliver the best health outcomes for the most people is listening, engaging and having something to offer that misinformation peddlers don't — interventions that work. It's also time to recognize the importance of innovating how those of us in health professions communicate. COVID has made it clear that getting your message across is an essential part of health care — the best interventions in the world can do nothing if people do not believe in them. Effective communication strategies should be pursued, studied, innovated and taught with the same rigor as the biological aspects of medicine. Biomedical innovation has been a resounding success in creating vaccines and treatments to fight the COVID pandemic. Now let's put the same effort into understanding how to tackle the health care concerns of different communities and how to reach across the political divide with empathy. That's how we end the misinformation pandemic." Ellen F. Foxman is an immunologist. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "How to end the misinformation pandemic." Immunity-Boosting Supplements Won’t Do Anything For Coronavirus, Doctors Say

Bustle

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2020 6:25

As more places institute social distancing guidelines to help “flatten the curve” of the COVID-19 pandemic, you might notice your social media feeds are overrun with ads for “immunity-boosting” supplements. From pills to powders to smoothie mix-ins, these products often come couched in language about “supporting” or “strengthening” your immune system, without directly referencing the public health crisis at the front of everyone’s minds. People everywhere are trying to keep themselves safe from contracting coronavirus, but experts say supplements aren’t likely to help. “The only way a supplement could help prevent the spread of an infectious disease is if the supplement made you too sick to leave your home,” Dr. Juan Antonio Dumois, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, says. Dumois says when it comes to understanding any claims being made about boosting immunity, first you need to know what “immunity” means. The immune system helps keep infections and cancers under control, he explains; white blood cells are key to this process. Different kinds of white blood cells, made by your bone marrow, do different things to help keep your body healthy, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center: Some “sound the alarm” when infectious agents invade the body and kickstart its response, some work to produce antibodies to fight bacteria and viruses, and some break down bacteria directly. Your bone marrow needs you to eat a balanced diet in order to turn amino acids into white blood cells, according to the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics. Take someone who is deficient in vitamin B12 (a common issue for vegans) — supplementing with that specific vitamin helps prevent anemia, keeps blood and nerve cells healthy, and allows the body to produce DNA, which all in turn help your immune system. Generally speaking, though, most Americans are able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need from their food. On top of vitamins, a few herbal ingredients commonly pop up in these supplements, each of which sorta-kinda does what it’s marketed to do. Studies have shown that elderberry extract, Shatavari root extract, Ashwagandha root extract, and Reishi mushrooms might have a positive effect on the immune system, but each study concludes that more testing needs to be done before these supplements should be recommended. Just because some “supplements may have been shown to stimulate the activity of white blood cells in a test tube,” Dumois says, “does not mean they will make a sick person feel better.” While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate the supplement industry the way it does prescription drugs, it does ban manufacturers of dietary supplements from marketing their products for the purpose of treating, diagnosing, preventing, or curing diseases. They do allow manufacturers to make claims about “supporting” or “strengthening” some process of the human body, like immunity. You find those words all over the labels of these products. But as Dumois puts it, “immunity supporting,” “immunity boosting,” and immunity strengthening” are all phrases that “do not have a specific medical or scientific meaning.” Because of the “extreme complexity of the human immune system,” Dumois points out that even in the case where, hypothetically, a supplement did kickstart your immune response, it might not be what’s best for the body: In severe cases of COVID-19, an aggressive immune response against the virus is the cause of some of the worst lung damage, Dumois says. According to the CDC, the immune response to COVID-19 is not yet understood. Scientists simply don’t know enough yet about how the virus operates, other than that it’s highly contagious. So the idea that a supplement with limited research may stop you from getting coronavirus is no more likely than assuming that, well, anything other than social distancing (or any forthcoming vaccine) will stop you from getting it. “Since there have been no studies published about the benefits of any dietary supplement in the treatment of patients with COVID-19, you cannot assume or believe that any supplements that ‘boosts the immune system’ will make you better,” Dumois says. This goes for both prevention and cure. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has repeatedly said there is no proven treatment for COVID-19 yet, says Dr. Ellen Foxman, an assistant professor of laboratory medicine and immunobiology at the Yale School of Medicine. “That means [there is] no proven drug or medication or herbal supplement that treats this,” Foxman says. “If someone is claiming they have a magic pill, they don’t.” The best things anyone can do to “boost” their immune system are common sense. “During times of stress, people put aside their normal healthy habits, like three meals a day and a good night’s sleep,” says Foxman. Sleeping and eating a balanced diet, as well as a little bit of exercise, can help you maintain your baseline health and make it easier for your body to fight off illnesses. But no supplement can do what social distancing and best practices do to prevent or slow the spread of coronavirus infections. Dumois emphasizes washing your hands, not touching your face, and staying away from potentially sick people. “If you don’t come across other people, you’re not going to get a virus from them,” Foxman says. “It sounds really dull and boring, but … staying home is really effective.” Dr. Juan Antonio Dumois, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Dr. Ellen Foxman, an assistant professor of laboratory medicine and immunobiology at the Yale School of Medicine
