On The South Florida Roundup, we looked at President Trump's new travel bans and restrictions — and the impact, if not the insult, it's registering in our Haitian, Venezuelan and Cuban communities (01:08). We also talked with acclaimed NBC 6 meteorologist John Morales about his concerns that Trump's budget cuts could have weathermen like him “flying blind” this hurricane season (20:02). And we heard from South Miami Mayor Javier Fernandez about his suit to keep his cops out of immigration enforcement(35:40).

It's an Sam Solo Wednesday, and we have the latest on the Big Beautiful Bill inching its way through Congress. Some of the cuts will impact federally-backed science institutions, including weather monitoring. Florida meteorologist John Morales tells his viewers on air that he doesn't think he'll be able to predict the paths of hurricanes this season as he has in previous years because of the defunding of vital monitoring institutions. Scary. After that we have two great guests. First, Sam speaks to Wired senior writer Makena Kelly about Doge and Elon Musk's lingering impact on the government, as well as Palantir and it's role in government surveillance. Check out her reporting here: https://www.wired.com/author/makena-kelly/ After that Sam spoke to San Diego journalist Roberto Camacho to discuss his reporting in Bolts on a grass root organization dedicated to monitoring ICE and protecting immigrant communities. Check out his his piece here: https://boltsmag.org/how-volunteer-patrols-are-working-to-protect-san-diego-immigrant-communities-from-ice/ Follow Roberto on social media here: Twitter/IG/Threads: @rob_camacho_sd Bluesky: @robcamachosd.bsky.social In the Fun Half™, Elon Musk is now publicly poo poo-ing the Big Beautiful Bill which he thinks is bloated. Takes one to know one bud. As Sam points out, maybe it has something to do with how the bill would effect his bottom line. Patrick Bet-David and crew however are defending Trump, and Musk's drug use. They're in a tough spot these days. Alex Jones is going out of his way to defend Palantir. Gee, I wonder why? And for his part, Richie Torres is defending the Abundance Agenda. Go figure. Are you bracing yourself for the teen years? Buckle up, because John Morales and Sarah Tafoya sat down with Danielle Bean on Morning Air to talk about the ups and downs of raising teens. Danielle, mom of eight kids (yes, eight!), dropped some serious wisdom on surviving these years without losing your mind—or your faith. Here's the scoop: Teens = Big Attitudes Danielle doesn't sugarcoat it; teens definitely develop an attitude (or two!). But instead of seeing it as terrifying, she reframes it: it's a sign of growth! Teens are figuring out who they are, which is awkward for everyone. As parents, it's our job to support them as they grow. How to Break Through the Silence We all know the "How was school?" conversation that ends with a one-word answer: "Fine." Danielle recommends getting creative with your questions. Try: "What was the best part of your day?" "Who's your closest friend and why?" When all else fails, do something active with them: playing sports, cooking, or even a project can get the conversation flowing when sitting face-to-face feels too intense. Pray, Pray, and Pray Some More Feeling like you're losing control? That's where prayer comes in. Danielle urges parents to be “prayer warriors” for their teens. You can't control everything they face, but you can entrust them to God and their guardian angels. Seriously, praying for your teen's angel is a game-changer, especially when you can't be there in person. Balance Freedom and Rules Yes, teens need space. Yes, they need boundaries. It's a dance, like when John shared how he and his son hit the batting cages together, mixing fun with father-son bonding. Or when it comes to screens and phones, Danielle says delay it as long as possible. Teens might push back, but that's okay! "If your teen is happy with all your rules, you might be doing something wrong," she jokes (but also… she's kinda serious!). Final words of wisdom: Don't freak out! God handpicked you to be the parent of your teen. Lean into His grace, keep praying, and remember: you're shaping them into the person God wants them to be. You've got this!

So, are you thinking about retiring? You're definitely not alone! On today's Morning Air, John Morales had a really interesting chat with Harry Kraemer—former CEO of Baxter and all-around wise guy—about when it's the right time to retire. Spoiler alert: it's not as simple as hitting a certain age! Harry pointed out that with people living longer these days, deciding when to retire has gotten a bit trickier. Back in the day, the average lifespan was around 65, so retiring made sense. But now, you might live into your 80s or 90s, which means you could be retired for more years than you actually worked! The big takeaway? Plan ahead! Harry emphasized that it's super important to think about what you want to do in retirement. Don't just stop working one day and expect everything to fall into place. Whether it's volunteering, getting more involved in your church, or even writing that novel, you've got to have a plan. And remember, retirement doesn't mean retiring from life! You can stay active, contribute to your community, and keep that sense of purpose going strong. So, before you decide to clock out for good, take some time to pray, reflect, and really think about what God might be calling you to do with the next chapter of your life. As Harry likes to say, "life's not a sprint—it's a marathon." So, pace yourself, plan wisely, and enjoy the ride!
John Morales had an incredible conversation with Theresa Civantos Barber, the assistant editor for Aleteia, on the latest Morning Air podcast. They looked into the amazing journey of American swimmer Katie Ledecky, and trust us, it's a story you don't want to miss. So, the Paris Summer Olympics had its fair share of drama because of the Opening Ceremony, but one athlete who truly stole the spotlight was Katie Ledecky. She snagged four medals in Paris, including two golds, bringing her total to 14 Olympic medals! That makes her the most decorated American woman in Olympic history. Can you believe that? But here's the thing—Katie's not just a powerhouse in the pool. She's got this incredible humble spirit and an unwavering Catholic faith that sets her apart from everyone else. Barber shared how Ledecky's humility and gratitude are what really make her shine. She's not one to brag; her high school teachers didn't even know she was Olympic bound until they saw it in the news. How wild is that? Katie finds her calm and focus through prayer, especially the Hail Mary, which she says before every race. Imagine that—right before diving in, she's connecting with her faith. Faith in Action Katie's faith isn't just something she keeps to herself; she lives it out loud. She's a rockstar volunteer, serving meals to the homeless, leading campus ministry, and helping out in her family's parish. Her virtues—perseverance, dedication, generosity, and humility—are not just words. They're a way of life. Katie's a role model for all of us, showing that you can be both an incredible athlete and a genuinely kind person. Inspiring the Next Generation Barber shared a sweet story about how her own kids are inspired by Katie. They've started incorporating prayer into their sports routines, just like Katie does. Her son, for instance, prayed the Hail Mary before his game because he was nervous. It's amazing to see how Katie's faith and dedication resonate with young athletes. John mentions that Katie Ledecky's story is a shining example of how sports can be a school of virtue, echoing Pope St. John Paul II's sentiment that we can all be athletes for Christ. Final Thoughts Katie Ledecky's journey reminds us that true greatness isn't just in medals but in character. Her story is a beautiful example of how faith can anchor us, guide us, and inspire us to be better. So, if you're looking for a role model who perfectly balances excellence with humility and competition with faith, Katie Ledecky is your girl.
In this podcast episode of Morning Air, John Morales tackles a big question: are sports, especially the Olympics, still worth our time? Joining the conversation is Dr. Bill Thierfelder, president of Belmont Abbey College and a former Olympian, live from Charlotte, North Carolina. Sports and Virtue: A Perfect Match? St. Pope St. John Paul II loved sports. He saw them as a "school of virtue" and a gift from God. So could the Olympics, with their virtuous roots, still be a great example of excellence and faith today, in spite of all the blasphemy we saw in the Opening Ceremony? The Controversy: Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony Dr. Thierfelder talks about the Vatican's reaction to the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, which mocked the Last Supper. This outrageous act left you feeling hurt and angry, and that's totally understandable. Dr. Thierfelder argues that it shouldn't take away from the athletes' hard work and dedication, though. A Peek into Olympic History Did you know the Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Swifter, Higher, Stronger) was inspired by a Catholic priest, Fr. Henri Didon? Dr. Thierfelder shares this neat tidbit, showing how the Olympic spirit is all about lifting humanity and reflecting our God-given potential. Athletes as Faith Role Models Despite the controversy, athletes like Katie Ledecky set positive examples. Ledecky, a devout Catholic, prays the Hail Mary before every swim. Isn't that amazing? Listener Reactions Listeners Tracy and Mike call in to share their thoughts. They've decided to boycott the Olympics in protest. Dr. Thierfelder respects their decision but also talks about the importance of recognizing the good in sports and suggests writing letters to Olympic organizers to voice concerns constructively. Final Thoughts: Be Athletes for Christ Dr. Thierfelder wraps up by encouraging Catholics to stay engaged in the world and embody virtues in everything they do, just like Olympic athletes. He calls for action beyond personal boycotts, advocating for public efforts to uphold respect and virtue everywhere. So, while there are good reasons to question the current state of the Olympics, Dr. Thierfelder believes that focusing on the athletes' virtuous efforts and speaking out can help keep the spirit of the Olympic Games alive. Let's keep our eyes on higher things and remember, as St. Pope St. John Paul II taught, we can all be athletes for Christ. How do you feel about this? Have you decided to boycott the Olympic Games?
In this episode of True Crime To-Go, John and Jamie discuss the downfall of the man who voiced McGruff the Crime Dog. “And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.” Luke 23:26. This week I explore the reality of watching another struggle under the weight of their cross. Perhaps, we are called to be "Simon" in the lives of those we love. In a recent episode of Morning Air, John Morales explores the topic of transgender surgeries for minors, featuring invaluable insights from Mary Rice Hasson, an attorney and fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. They talk about the controversial practices at Boston Children's Hospital and the lies of gender-affirming care. The Issue at Hand: Boston Children's Hospital has been under scrutiny for performing sex-change surgeries on minors, despite media claims to the contrary. Publicly available documents confirm that procedures such as gender-affirming hysterectomies are indeed being performed on children. Mary Rice Hasson's Perspective: Mary Rice Hasson highlights the underlying problem: the belief that gender identity can and should be altered to match a person's feelings, rather than accepting the biological reality of being male or female. Simply because you feel a certain way doesn't mean you are that way. Our culture puts way too much emphasis on feelings, and not enough on realty. The Bigger Picture: This issue has gained momentum over the past decade, with the Biden administration pushing gender identity policies in schools and healthcare. Don't lose hope thinking you're alone in promoting the truth, though. You should be encouraged to know that many people are taking a stand, especially Catholics. Key Points from the Discussion: Medical and Ethical Concerns: Many hospitals, including Boston Children's, perform irreversible surgeries on minors, often leading to sterilization. These practices are criticized as exploiting vulnerable young people for profit, without addressing underlying mental health issues. These hospitals are in it for themselves, not for your children. Cultural Impact: The propagation of gender identity ideology has led to increased confusion and pressure on children and parents. Mary Rice Hasson says that true affirmation should be based on accepting one's biological sex as a gift from God, rather than altering the body. Parental Challenges: Parents often face emotional blackmail, being told their child's life depends on transitioning. They face so much pressure to go along with what their kids want because they're afraid their children will do something drastic to harm themselves. There is a critical need for parents to have open, honest conversations with their children about their feelings and the reality of their bodies. Final Thoughts: Mary Rice Hasson encourages Catholics and all people to speak up against these practices and to educate themselves and others about the truth of human sexuality. Emphasizing the teachings of the Church, she calls for a return to recognizing the inherent dignity and unchangeable nature of being created male or female. Let's keep this conversation going and ensure that the truth about our human identity is upheld and protected.
If you're praying for your children to come back to the faith, never stop! Who knows... they could one day become a priest! On a recent Morning Air podcast, John Morales had a chat with Fr. Mac Hill, sharing his inspiring conversion story. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Fr. Mac grew up in a solid Catholic family but veered off course during his high school and college days. High School & College: Fr. Mac was your typical high school jock, more into his reputation and partying than his faith. He went to the University of Florida, diving headfirst into the college party scene. But instead of fun, it left him feeling empty and lost. The Wake-Up Call: Things hit rock bottom the night before spring break when he was drunk and crashed his truck, which ended him in jail. In his cell, he had a massive epiphany, realizing he was on a dangerous path and desperately reached out to God. Reconnecting with Faith: A twist of fate: just before his arrest, an old classmate invited him to a Bible study. After his release, he went and discovered a group of passionate, faith-filled college students. This kickstarted his journey back to faith, with a heartfelt confession and a deep experience of God's mercy, "turning his shame into a hunger for the Eucharist." The Big Decision: Initially, Fr. Mac brushed off thoughts of becoming a priest, even dating his "dream girl" while figuring things out. But through prayer and a consecration to Jesus through Mary, he found peace and clarity about his calling. He entered St. John Vianney College Seminary in 2014 and was ordained on May 15, 2021. Life as Fr. Mac: Now, he's the parochial vicar at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, loving every day as a new adventure with the Lord, full of joy and peace. Fr. Mac's journey from wild party nights to a devoted priest shows just how powerful God's grace can be. It's a reminder that no matter how far we stray, it's never too late to turn back and find true peace and purpose.

How often do you think about heaven? How do you picture it? Does it fill you with immense peace? John Morales has a heavenly discussion with Fr. Jerome Koutnik, exploring the nature of heaven. Spoiler alert: it's not the soda-fountain-in-the-clouds you might have imagined as a kid! A Spiritual Dimension Fr. Jerome helps us understand that heaven isn't a physical location. Instead, it's a transcendent reality. St. Paul hints at this in 1 Corinthians 2:9, describing heaven as something beyond our wildest dreams. Jesus' Ascension: A Physical Event with a Spiritual Meaning When Jesus ascended, it wasn't about reaching a physical "place" but symbolizing a higher, glorified existence. He rose to confirm the apostles' faith, showing that His presence isn't confined to physical realms. Heavenly Presence: Beyond Time and Space Fr. Jerome emphasizes that while heaven isn't a physical place, Jesus' risen body and the bodies of Mary and St. Joseph are present there in a glorified form. They move beyond physical constraints, embodying a spiritual reality that transcends our earthly understanding. Mass: A Glimpse of Heaven on Earth Fr. Jerome beautifully connects this concept to the Mass. It's not just a local gathering; it's a mystical participation in the eternal, heavenly liturgy. Through the Eucharist, heaven and earth unite, making every Mass a step into the divine. Heaven: In the Heart of Christ For those still wondering, “Where is heaven?” Fr. Jerome poetically concludes: heaven is in the heart of Christ. It's a place of eternal love and mercy, where we're invited to dwell forever. Are you living for heaven now on Earth? Key Takeaways: Heaven isn't a physical place: It's a transcendent reality. Jesus' ascension: Symbolic of moving to a glorified existence. Presence in heaven: Not bound by physical limitations. Mass: A mystical participation in the heavenly liturgy.
Do you get stressed by all the meetings you have at work? Are you struggling to find time in the day to get stuff done? John Morales sat down with Harry Kraemer, a seasoned professor of management and strategy at Northwestern University, to dissect Shopify's bold decision to cut down on meetings. Shopify, the e-commerce giant, has shaken up the corporate world by eliminating all recurring meetings with more than two people and limiting large meetings to once a week.
Do you find it difficult to practice humility? Do you find yourself confused about what it really means to be humble? John Morales dives deep with Fr. John Gordon into the spiritual arsenal we possess in our battle against the devil. Satan's Achilles Heel: Humility! Fr. Gordon stresses the profound power of humility as our ultimate weapon against the devil's deceptions. Quoting scripture, he emphasizes that our perceived weaknesses, when surrendered to God, become our greatest strengths. Humility, rather than a display of weakness, emerges as a declaration of trust in Jesus. This transforms our vulnerabilities into a formidable force against evil. Daily Prayers, Divine Protections: He shares the daily practice of invoking St. Michael the Archangel, whose defense against wickedness isn't based on might but on unity with God. This alignment with God dismantles the devil's strategies, as he thrives on pride and rebellion—traits starkly opposed to the humility demonstrated by St. Michael and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary's Modesty: A Model of Might Father portrays the Virgin Mary as the epitome of humility. Her simple yet profound "yes" to God exemplifies the ultimate surrender to divine will, a model for us all. Through her life, Mary demonstrated that true humility involves knowing and trusting in God's plans above all. Unmasking the Enemy: The devil, crippled by his inability to create, only distorts. Fr. Gordon says that recognizing truth empowers us to overcome the devil's influence. Importantly, humility is recognized not as self-degradation but as an honest acknowledgment of our identity as beloved children of God. We don't belittle our worth, but we recognize our worth in God. We don't try to find acceptance in other people or what they say about us. The Nuclear Power of Humility: Fr. Gordon boldly claims humility is like a nuclear weapon in spiritual combat. It directly counters the devil's pride and is essential for overcoming the temptations that plague our fallen nature. The Mother of All Battles: Fr. Gordon draws us back to Our Lady, whose messages of prayer and penance continue to guide us toward peace. Mary's humble acceptance of God's will, despite not knowing the full picture of what was to come, can help you on your own spiritual journey towards heaven. In a world riddled with spiritual skirmishes, Fr. John Gordon remind us that arming ourselves with humility and trusting in God not only defends us against the devil, but it aligns us with the powerful force of goodness and truth. Ask the Lord for the graces to be truly humble and let it revolutionize your spiritual battles!

"Morning Air" delved into the harrowing aftermath of the Kansas City shooting that erupted amidst Super Bowl victory festivities. This unexpected turn from euphoria to despair, following a dispute that ended in gunfire, has left many searching for answers and solace. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves' assurance that this was not an act of terrorism does little to take away the grief of a community in mourning, especially when you consider the victims, whose ages span from 8 to 47, with many being under the age of 16. In these moments of collective heartache, Rhonda Stark joined John Morales to reflect on the senseless violence that has once again touched innocent lives. It's so easy to get numb when we hear about these stories, but we must always take time to pray and grieve. Rhonda's focus on the likely backgrounds of those who perpetrate such acts—a lack of love, stability, and a sense of belonging—speaks to the power of the Catholic faith, family, and community. Your job as a parent matters so much because you are giving your children a safe and stable upbringing that so many don't have. Her advice to you, as you're grappling with how to address this tragedy with your children, was to remember the importance of age-appropriate discussions, and the necessity of providing a secure space for your children to express their fears and questions. Her emphasis on strategic planning for safety in public spaces, while not allowing fear to overshadow our lives, is something to really consider. But perhaps what might strike you the most were her final thoughts on taking actionable steps towards healing. She encouraged you to connect with those affected through platforms like Childrens Mercy, reminding you that even the smallest gesture of sending a message of hope can ripple through a community in need of comfort. In prayer and solidarity, we stand with Kansas City, united in our hope and prayer for a future where celebrations are never again marred by such tragedies.
The Kansas City Chiefs are certainly thrilled to take home another Super Bowl victory, but the city now mourns the loss of life because of the shooting that happened at the team celebration parade. It's absolutely heartbreaking to hear this news, and John Morales talks with team chaplain Fr. Richard Rocha, amidst the swirl of victory and sorrow. Heartache Hits Home: Just when the victory parade was pumping up Chiefs Kingdom, tragedy struck. Fr. Rocha shares a personal twist – the victim was the sister of a close friend. He missed the parade for Ash Wednesday duties but woke up to this devastating news. His call to prayer for the affected families adds a somber note to our celebration. Epic Super Bowl Moments: Fr. Rocha got to witness the Chiefs' stunning win at Super Bowl 58 firsthand. Imagine the experience! He tells you about the team's spiritual prep and how having Mass kept everyone grounded amidst the Vegas buzz. It's all about keeping faith no matter where you are! Spotlight on the Stars: Patrick Mahomes and Harrison Butker steal the show, not just with their killer plays but with their big hearts too. Butker, with his ashes on his forehead at the parade, and Mahomes giving glory to God post-win, show what real champs are made of. Dynasty Dreams: With three Super Bowl titles in five years, are we looking at a Chiefs dynasty? Father is all in, praising the dream team's spirit and leadership. So, whether you're a die-hard Chiefs fan or just love a good story of triumph and resilience, let's keep the prayers going for those affected by the tragedy and cheer on our teams with all the faith and passion in the world!

Are you ready for the "Big Game" this Sunday? Grab your favorite snacks and get ready for a great match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. John Morales interviews Fr. Richard Rocha, the Catholic chaplain for the Kansas City Chiefs, ahead of Super Bowl 58. Here's the breakdown: Imagine how amazing it'd be to be able to offer Mass for the team! This is Fr. Rocha's role as chaplain. He is responsible for providing Mass for Catholic players and staff, offering confessions, counseling, and even performing weddings and baptisms for team members. He is present at the team's hotel before games and travels with the team to the Super Bowl. #dreamlife Harrison Butker's faith: You may know about the strong Catholic faith of Chiefs' placekicker Harrison Butker, who wears the brown scapular and credits his success to his devotion to Our Lady. He spent time in a monastery giving thanks after winning the Super Bowl. He's such a great witness, and you'll hear a clip of him talking to John Morales from last year. Faith within the team: Fr. Rocha agrees that faith is important for many Chiefs players, who are seen in prayer and giving glory to God on the sideline during games. Super Bowl expectations: Father is no doubt confident that the Chiefs can win another Super Bowl, given their track record and strong performance in the playoffs.

Hour 2 of The Drew Mariani Show 12-11-23 Chaplet of Divine Mercy Fr. Rocky talks about the upcoming Family Rosary Across America event at the Shrine of Christ's Passion. John Morales joins the show LIVE from the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
John Morales engaged in a conversation with Father Esequiel Sanchez about the significant event of Our Lady of Guadalupe's apparitions. This event holds profound importance, especially considering that before 1000 AD, Christianity was nonexistent in the Americas. Father Sanchez, the rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines, Illinois, delved deep into the intriguing story and the historical context of these apparitions, aligning with the Nican Mopohua narrative. This story is not just about an uneducated, illiterate man, Juan Diego, but about a historian, a guardian of the people's history, whose powerful memory helped in validating the apparitions. The conversation highlighted the unique timing of these apparitions, coinciding with Europe's turmoil during the Protestant Reformation. What makes Our Lady of Guadalupe's message extraordinary is its focus on love, help, and protection without calling for conversions or foretelling apocalyptic events. She sought to build a sanctuary for everyone – natives, Spaniards, Africans, mestizos – under her maternal care. Father Sanchez pointed out the global impact of these apparitions, evident from the widespread devotion across continents. The emotional, personal stories of faith, like that of a father undertaking a painful penance for his sick daughter, show the deep, personal connection devotees have with Our Lady of Guadalupe.
