Kamasi Washington: A jazz genius on collaborative lessons learned from Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, and more

Jazz is a constantly evolving art form, offering some of the richest lessons in creative collaboration. A melody and chord progression provide the foundation, but as each musician brings their unique improvisational perspective, the music takes on unexpected, transformative shapes. If you ask any fan of the genre who's pushing jazz into new territory, Kamasi Washington's name will come up—likely at the very top. His 2015 album The Epic won the American Music Prize and stands, in our opinion, as one of the greatest jazz records of the 21st century. Kamasi contributed to Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly, scored Michelle Obama's Netflix documentary Becoming, and has collaborated with musical legends like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lauryn Hill, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Chaka Khan, and many more. In this episode, we spent an evening with Kamasi, exploring his creative process, what he's learned from his collaborators, his philosophy on collaboration, and his latest album, Fearless Movement. Find show notes, bonus content, and more on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/kamasi-washington Bio Kamasi Washington, born in Los Angeles in 1981, grew up surrounded by music, with a saxophonist father and a flutist mother who nurtured his musical talent from a young age. Kamasi's journey began with drums and piano in his early years, progressing to the clarinet at age seven and finally to the tenor saxophone at twelve, mirroring his father's path. His high school years at Hamilton High School Music Academy were pivotal; there, he joined the renowned Multi School Jazz Band and learned from jazz icons like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Kamasi's talent was quickly recognized when he won the John Coltrane Saxophone Competition, and he co-founded "The Young Jazz Giants," which marked his early step into professional music. Kamasi's musical evolution continued at UCLA, where he studied ethnomusicology and expanded his understanding of global music traditions. This foundation supported his wide-ranging collaborations beyond jazz, where he worked with artists like Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq, and Kendrick Lamar. Yet, despite his diverse influences, Kamasi remained firmly rooted in jazz, ultimately channeling these experiences into his innovative sound. His 2015 debut album, The Epic, was a monumental release—a three-disc exploration of jazz that introduced a unique blend of spiritual depth and musical complexity. The album garnered critical acclaim, broadening Kamasi's reach and establishing him as a leader in modern jazz. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. As one-third of legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, his influence and impact on the musical landscape is still felt today. In April of 2024, "A Tribe Called Quest" was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The soft-spoken and contemplative Brooklyn native began a life of music at an early age, spending years DJing parties in his Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood before co-founding Tribe in 1985. The group's socially conscious lyrics and unique production style is as innovative today as it was two decades ago.Muhammad carried that classic sound into the production unit The Ummah with Jay Dilla and Q-Tip, and continued working with artists including Faith Evans, Mos Def, and D'Angelo. In 1999, he co-founded the Grammy nominated all-star trio Lucy Pearl with Dawn Robinson, formerly of En Vogue, and Raphael Saadiq, of Tony! Toni! Toné!After Lucy Pearl, Muhammad focused his attention on his production company and developing new talent. In 2004, he released the very personal and adventurous solo debut LP Shaheedulah and Stereotypes, featuring some of his new proteges. Working on material for a follow-up, Muhammad set up a studio with Martin “Doc” McKinney of Esthero and Weeknd fame, and continued writing and collaborating with other artists as well.In 2017, Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) formed the band, The Midnight Hour. In addition to musical releases and touring, they've teamed to score a myriad of television and film projects: Marvel's Luke Cage (Netflix), Raising Kanan (Starz), The Equalizer (CBS), Reasonable Doubt (Hulu), Run This Town (2019), Washington Black (2023), Boogie (2021), and Bitchin', The Sound and Fury of Rick James (2021).In 2019, Younge, Muhammad, Andrew Lojero and Adam Block created Jazz Is Dead (JID): a multimedia company specializing in the production of live concerts, studio albums, television and film. Tonight I am on the couch with Keisha Jackson, the daughter of the sassy, legendary BOSS lady, Millie Jackson. I remember my parents playing Ms. Millie Jackson's albums and how defying her album covers were. When I learned that Keisha too is a singer and a BOSS, I had to talk to her. You know how they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree? Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Keisha Jackson is a BOSS lady like her mama. Keisha began singing professionally at age 15 as a background vocalist for her mother. She went on to record two albums with Sony Records and has contributed vocals on recordings with iconic artists like Aretha Franklin, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Kaiser Chiefs, Erasure, Da Brat and others. She has toured with rap music icons Outkast, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, George Clinton, Faith Evans, Raphael Saadiq, Yacht Rock Revue (current), and more. My biggest pull to Keisha is her love for mental health and wellness. She's also a certified life coach and a well-respected industry vocal coach. In her role as a vocal coach, she is counseling her clients and supporting their mental health journey, though she may not know it ;) She continues to manage her vocal coaching agency, One Voice Entertainment which she conceived in 2001. Join us on the couch as she shares her story and drops MANY gems. Cutting through a crowd of '90s new jacks, Oakland's own Raphael Saadiq, Dwayne Wiggins and Timothy Christian Riley seized attention with their evolution of musical romance. TMS takes a closer look at what made Tony Toni Toné the timeless R&B group that we came to love — and miss, when they broke-up all too soon. The Snobs study the ingredients of the secret sauce that gave us The Tonies' most iconic songs — debating whether their classic instrumentation or romantic lyrics are more critical to TTT's place in the house of music. The crew closes out the show with a roundtable to talk up the breakdowns of their favorite groups, and ask: What band had the most tragic break-up of all time? Get ready to laugh, cry, and scream at your podcast app, as Season 3 of The Music Snobs continues with an episode for the ages.

In this important episode of The People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with hip-hop legend DJ Quik for a much-anticipated career retrospective.   Quik breaks down the West Coast sound, and how he learned the importance of pushing himself while working with Teddy Riley. He describes growing up in Compton, and the fact that his focus on music allowed him to avoid gang life as a youngster. Quik also goes deep on his collaborations—giving flowers to and speaking on the importance of the late Eazy-E and Tupac. Plus, he recounts some of his work with Suga Free, Raphael Saadiq, and of course Talib Kweli.   This episode is truly legendary, and will take you places you wouldn't expect. Talib, Jasmin, and Quik will have you locked in. Enjoy!
