This week, JP sits down with Glen from Green Dragon, a true pioneer whose journey runs deep through both the music industry and cannabis culture. Before building a cannabis powerhouse, Glen was producing records like “Love of My Life” by Erykah Badu and “Dance Tonight” by Lucy Pearl — eventually finding himself tapped in with names like Dr. Dre and Raphael Saadiq during his time in LA.From there, the transition into cannabis came naturally — and over the past 20+ years, Green Dragon has grown into a full-scale operation with dispensaries, cultivation, nursery, and distribution.

With the show coming back into dropping regular episodes this year, we're dropping a few flashback shows for everyone! Our commentary during this 2018 episode touched base on updates with the after effects of the earthquake + tsunami in Japan, the recent U.N. intervention in Libya news, the possible upcoming U.S. government shutdown due to budget issues and why it's just ridiculous how politicians are dragging this along, the re-birth of the "Birther" fake controversy with President Barack Obama and some other diverse topics here and there. We also had a great interview with Forbes magazine staff writer Zack O'Malley Greenburg about the creative inspiration, work & drama behind his latest book, "Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office".Book Summary:Empire State of Mind tells the story behind Jay-Z's rise to the top as told by the people who lived it with him–from classmates at Brooklyn's George Westinghouse High School; to the childhood friend who got him into the drug trade; to the DJ who convinced him to stop dealing and focus on music. This book explains just how Jay-Z propelled himself from the bleak streets of Brooklyn to the heights of the business world.Zack O'Malley Greenburg draws on his one-on-one interviews with hip-hop luminaries such as DJ Clark Kent, Questlove of The Roots, Damon Dash, Fred “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite, MC Serch; NBA stars Jamal Crawford and Sebastian Telfair; and recording industry executives including Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic Records, to paint a tantalizing portrait of a very private mogul._________FuseBox Radio Playlist for the Week of March 30, 2011Top Spins (Music Still Lasting in Rotation/Music Played Live on Air Each Week/As Well As Music Requested By The Listeners)1. D'Angelo's Brown Sugar sounded like nothing else in 1995. R&B was slick, polished, and built for clubs. D'Angelo later said the "deeper consciousness" had gone out of contemporary music. Questlove later wrote that contemporary R&B had become "trite" and "soulless" ... and then there was Brown Sugar, D'Angelo's debut album. It sounded more like the '70s than the '90s. More like church than the club. On this episode of You'll Hear It, jazz pianists Adam Maness and Peter Martin go track by track through D'Angelo's debut, pulling apart the vocal stems, naming the jazz chords underneath the soul, and tracing every influence back to its root. They also bring in the archival recordings you might have missed: a live set from the Jazz Café London that gives the album a whole second life, and a J Dilla remix.-------------------------------Start your free Open Studio trial for ALLLLL your jazz lesson needs: https://openstudiojazz.com/yhi-------------------------------Related You'll Hear It episodes:Voodoo: https://youtu.be/AYqmFNF2s0U-------------------------------About You'll Hear It:In this popular music series Adam and Peter break down the greatest albums of all time. From the inspiration behind his rebranding and the excitement of Grammy recognition to the vision fueling his own label, Humble Sound Records, James holds nothing back. Tune in for an inspiring conversation about reinvention, resilience, and the pursuit of musical dreams.GuestGuestGrammy Nominated Singer, Songwriter, Record Producer, and Audio Engineer James Artissen also formerly known as James Worthy has long considered the name to be central to his life, and identity. It represents the dedication, and the passion towards his craft. Coming from New York, the musician attributes his hometown as a major influence on his style, and sound. Born James Allen Worthy on March 28, 1992 in Queens, New York, James began pursuing music at the age of 16. During that time period James had the opportunity to meet the late great Michael Jackson at Webster Hall in New York City which inspired James to fully pursue a career in the music business. After moving to Atlanta, GA the singer, songwriter, and producers first musical experience was at his high school recording studio through a music mentoring program sponsored by Dallas Austin. His initial foray into music consisted of learning the art of songwriting which later turned into music production shortly after. Artissen was also highly influenced by artists such as: A Tribe Called Quest, Whodini, Kanye West, Miguel, The Weeknd, and Pharrell Williams. While studying those artists he began to teach himself how to sing in 2009. To further his education he attended The Art Institute of Atlanta where he received a bachelor's degree in audio production. This helped him begin working, and placing his work with mainstream acts, and songwriters. In 2017, James transitioned from music production to artistry, and began recording himself. He joined a duo group named Kings X2, and released their debut single "Wine For Me" in september of 2017. The single peaked at #10 on the US Billboard Hot Single Sales Chart for 5 weeks. Later in 2018 the group disbanded, and James released his debut solo single "Move" which features the rap group Whodini. Following up to 2019 James released his anticipated EP "Blu Leisure" which became critically acclaimed upon its release. The project included guest appearances from: Tony Terry, Sonna Rele, Kalenna Harper, and Whodini. After its great success he released his sophomore EP "Kaleidoscopes", and in 2023 he joined forces with rapper Big Gipp of the rap group Goodie Mob to release their collaborative EP "Gipp N Worthy". The lead single "TOTW" peaked at #91 on the US Billboard R&B Digital Sales Chart also charting at the #1 position on the Amazon Best Sellers Chart. Within all of James's work he has been nominated for several Grammy Awards by working with names such as: Meek Mill, Justin Bieber, Robin S., 112, Raphael Saadiq, and so many others to name. In 2024 James launched his own label imprint Humble Sound Record in conjunction with Sony Orchard. Here's a mix of my favorite rare R&B remixes from the 90's to 2000's that'll make you go, "damn they made a remix to this??" This was also my first recorded vinyl set ever, so I'm pretty happy with it so I can review the tape and look at my mistakes. Filmed live at the grand opening of our new pop-up coffee shop, B2B Café at Slow Jamz Gallery. If you're in LA, come thru, grab a drink, and listen to the baristas spin some records. His 2015 album The Epic won the American Music Prize and stands, in our opinion, as one of the greatest jazz records of the 21st century. Kamasi contributed to Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly, scored Michelle Obama's Netflix documentary Becoming, and has collaborated with musical legends like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lauryn Hill, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Chaka Khan, and many more. Kamasi's journey began with drums and piano in his early years, progressing to the clarinet at age seven and finally to the tenor saxophone at twelve, mirroring his father's path. His high school years at Hamilton High School Music Academy were pivotal; there, he joined the renowned Multi School Jazz Band and learned from jazz icons like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Kamasi's talent was quickly recognized when he won the John Coltrane Saxophone Competition, and he co-founded "The Young Jazz Giants," which marked his early step into professional music. Kamasi's musical evolution continued at UCLA, where he studied ethnomusicology and expanded his understanding of global music traditions. This foundation supported his wide-ranging collaborations beyond jazz, where he worked with artists like Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq, and Kendrick Lamar. Yet, despite his diverse influences, Kamasi remained firmly rooted in jazz, ultimately channeling these experiences into his innovative sound. His 2015 debut album, The Epic, was a monumental release—a three-disc exploration of jazz that introduced a unique blend of spiritual depth and musical complexity. The album garnered critical acclaim, broadening Kamasi's reach and establishing him as a leader in modern jazz. *** This ad-supported episode is available to everyone. On the show this time, it's a very special throwback episode, featuring a live performance from Oakland's own, R&B singer - Raphael Saadiq. Raphael Saadiq is a multi-instrumentalist, particularly deadly on bass - his first big gig was playing bass for Sheila E, who was opening for … Prince. He formed the multi-platinum group Tony Toni Toné with his brother and cousin. None of them are named Tony. He's produced massive records for people like D'Angelo, TLC, and the Roots. And, he's put out 5 solo records. Most of this show is from his 2008 release 'The Way I See It.' For this performance, the KEXP video team captured Raphael and his stellar live band at the Bumbershoot music festival in Seattle. Recorded 09/06/2009. Let's Take a Walk Sure Hope You Mean It Love That Girl Watch the full Live on KEXP (from Bumbershoot) performance on YouTube.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This fall, Tony! Toni! Toné! is on tour for the first time in twenty years. Raphael Saadiq's career took off as a member of the R&B trio —a group whose music taught Anna, a pre-teen at the time, a thing or two about romance and sexiness. Raphael left the group in the mid-'90s, launching a successful solo career and co-writing and producing music with everyone from Solange and Mary J. Blige to John Legend and D'Angelo. This week, we revisit Anna's 2019 conversation with Raphael about how he's dealt with family deaths over the years, paying off his studio, and what his love life looks like today, in his 50s.  Hosted on Acast.
