War engages our fight or flight instincts. When immediate threats like conflict arise, they often overshadow slower-burning, long-term crises like climate change. In this episode, James and Daisy talk about war. How does climate change fuel conflict? How does war, in turn, hinder efforts to combat the climate crisis? How do we avoid trading one existential threat for another?SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: Conflict and Environment Observatory – CEOBS was launched in 2018 with the primary goal of increasing awareness and understanding of the environmental and derived humanitarian consequences of conflicts and military activities. The Military Emissions Gap – This site is dedicated to tracking, analysing and closing the military emissions gap, bringing together the data that governments report into one place.OTHER ADVOCATES, FACTS, AND RESOURCES:NATO (2023) – Here are some remarks by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg from the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai.ND-GAIN Country Index – Summarizes a country's vulnerability to climate change and other global challenges in combination with its readiness to improve resilience.United Nations – Today, of the 15 countries most vulnerable to climate change, 13 are struggling with violent conflicts.Sir Christopher John Greenwood - After being called to the Bar by Middle Temple, he became a Fellow of Magdalene in 1978 and later Professor of International Law at the London School of Economics, specialising in international humanitarian law. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1999 and elected by the United Nations as a Judge of the International Court of Justice in 2008. That same year, Magdalene named him an Honorary Fellow. The Third Man –A classic thriller written by Graham Greene and starring Orson Welles in which a writer sets about investigating the death of a friend in post-World War II Vienna.Stop Ecocide International – Ecocide law provides a route to justice for the worst harms inflicted upon the living world in times of both peace and conflict, whenever and wherever they are committed.CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) – CND campaigns to rid the world of nuclear weapons - the most powerful and toxic weapons ever created, threatening all forms of life.Stop the War Coalition – Stop the War was founded in September 2001 in the weeks following 9/11, when George W. Bush announced the “war on terror”. Stop the War has since been dedicated to preventing and ending the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and elsewhere.UK Parliament (2024) – In the 2023/24 financial year, the UK spent £53.9 billion on defence.UK Parliament (2025) – The Prime Minister has committed to spend 2.5% of the UK's gross domestic product (GDP) on defence by 2027. To paraphrase Edwin Starr; work, what is it good for, absolutely nothing… At least according to Gen Z. Reports suggest that a whole generation might be ready to give up work, which, coincidentally, is how Peter felt every day as a younger man when he was mucking out pigs on the farm, while Sarah's eighteen-hour days in Hobbs only finally relented when she found herself talking to a drunken sub editor in a pub who was baffled by his new mac at work, just as Sarah had learnt how to use one… Elsewhere, we take to the seas as Peter asks why our submariners are spending over 200 days underwater at a time and why do we cling to the notion that we need a cold war superweapon like the atomic bomb and what really happens when you try to launch a Trident missile at sea? Nothing good, apparently. And what tests do you have to pass if, God forbid, you have to stand in for the PM one day? On our reading list this week: · Simple Subs Book – Leslie Sellers · The Silent Deep: The Royal Navy Submarine Service Since 1945 – James Jinks & Peter Hennessy · The Hunt For Red October - Tom Clancy To get in touch, email: alas@mailonline.co.uk, you can leave a comment on Spotify or even send us a voice note on Whatsapp – on 07796 657512, start your message with the word ‘alas'. In this episode Tom presents his Dissertation on Delay to Professor Ralston, who must choose the Hit Songiest Song From Mars from a number of worthy (and not so worthy) candidates. The challenge pits Love and Rockets against The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Tina Turner, Anthrax and Duran Duran. Interview with internationally-known guitar maker and musician Paul Reed Smith. 2024 Paul Reed Smith - Eightlock is a band of high-level musicians who are friends and have “locked” together recording and performing a new kind of groove with its roots in Baltimore funk, DC go-go and New Orleans swing. The band's sound is a heady brew of blues, soul, rock, funk and other roots sounds, all stirred-up into a groove-alicious gumbo. The line-up is three drummers, a bass player, a female singer and three guitar players, and the excitement around their three drummer groove is infectious. The band's three drummers are: Dennis Chambers (John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin) who was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2001; Gregory Grainger (Whitney Houston, Acoustic Alchemy); and Ju Ju House the legendary DC Go-Go drummer (Roberta Flack, Trevor Horn and The Chuck Brown Band). Bassist Gary Grainger has performed with John Scofield, Nancy Wilson, George Duke and Bill Evans. Vocalist Mia Samone Davis has a beautiful multifaceted voice that got its start in gospel music at a very young age. Guitarist Mike Ault regularly performs with high caliber artists including Rachelle Ferrell David Grissom, and Davy Knowles. Guitarist Bill Nelson is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center where he was introduced and invited to join the band in their efforts to raise money for cancer patients and families. “This group of highly respected and world-renowned musicians have a lot to say musically and spiritually,” Paul Reed Smith says. “It's been an absolute joy to be the catalyst for their gifts resulting in the music found in Lions Roaring in Quicksand.” Added guitarist/vocalist Dr. Bill Nelson: “The musicianship in Eightlock is extraordinary, but what amazes me most is that the music - both the recordings and live performances - just keep getting better and better. Locking into an Eightlock groove is a dream." And dynamic lead singer Mia Samone summed it up by saying, "Creating this CD reminded me that, ‘Peace is the price when the mind is at war'......inner peace is priceless." In addition to performing and recording with his own band, Paul Reed Smith has played with artists such as Santana, Alter Bridge and the Doobie Brothers. He was honored by Vintage Guitar Magazine as a Hall of Fame inductee in 2011. Paul has countless industry connections through all of the artists that endorse his guitars, plus invaluable marketing opportunities through his guitar company and all of the music stores around the world that sell his guitars. Grammy-award winning Mexican rock band Manaì had him open their residency at the LA Forum this year, John Mayer and Santana have taken him on tour. In addition to 10 powerful original songs on Lions Roaring in Quicksand, the new album features a cover of a Manaì song in English, “Ay, Doctor,” that the band has agreed to share on their social media to their millions of fans, as well as scintillating versions of the Al Green soul classic, “Love and Happiness,” the legendary Edwin Starr song, “War,” and “99,” a chart hit for the original version in France. If you've ever played one, you just know. Well, what you might not know is that Smith is also a musician in his own right, who's played with the likes of Santana and the Doobie Brothers. Smith has assembled a group of highly-respected musicians into Eightlock. Featuring three drummers, three guitarists, a bassist, and powerhouse vocalist, Mia Simone Davis, they're issuing their debut album called Lions Roaring in Quicksand, on Steele Records. We talk to Paul about how he assembled this unique lineup of high-caliber musicians, the challenges in recording and playing live with three drummers, and why they chose to cover "War" by Edwin Starr. He also talks about what got him into playing guitar as a young teen.
This month we head back to one of the rare years before any of us (even Tracey) were born and investigate our favourite songs of 1970. You can expect Prog, Folk, Pop, Reggae, Soul, Jazz, Country, & Metal. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Amon Düül II, Badfinger, Syd Barrett, Black Sabbath, James Brown, Tim Buckley, Vashti Bunyan, Carpenters, Chairmen Of The Board, Dave & Ansell Collins, Miles Davis, Deep Purple, The Doors, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, The Hollies, The Jackson 5, Carole King, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Lee Marvin, Curtis Mayfield, MC5, Pink Floyd, John Sebastian, Simon & Garfunkel, Edwin Starr, The Stooges, Townes Van Zandt, & Scott Walker.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3rGqXFzmixbgrzW9Q4sugS?si=00848dd580034aedFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com
We look at songs from a few of the major protest movements in our lifetime – racism, Vietnam, Ireland, Margaret Thatcher! From Woody Guthrie, through Springsteen and Dylan, to racism and Vietnam and the UK's Margaret Thatcher, to present-day Australia, we look at some of the great protest songs. Some of the stories behind those songs will take your breath away. Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” this time is Talking Heads' awesome “Remain in Light” from 1980. This album has been hailed as Talking Heads' greatest statement, the last and most accomplished of the trio of albums they recorded with Brian Eno (another of our idols). Seemingly timed to coincide with our review, the live movie “Stop Making Sense” has been completely restored and is in 4K on the big screen - 40 years on! We also talk about how Ed Kuepper achieves such a big sound in concert using a special edition Fender Stratocaster. There's sure to be stuff you didn't know here! Before his solo work, before Blind Faith, before Traffic, a 14-year old known then as Stevie Winwood joined The Spencer Davis Group as a guitarist and lead singer. This blues-oriented British band released their first LP, conveniently called Their First LP in June of 1965 to British and European audiences. We are covering it in August 1965, but the album itself was not released in the United States at the time. Most of the songs would make it to the US market in compilation albums released years later. The Spencer Davis Group was Spencer Davis on vocals, guitar, and harmonica; Steve Winwood on lead vocals, harmonica, guitar, and piano; Muff Winwood (Steve's older brother) on vocals and bass; and Pete York on drums. Additional personnel included Kenny Salmon on organ for a couple of tracks, and one track found Peter Asher on piano and Millie Small on vocals. The album didn't enter the UK albums chart until January 1966, but it would reach number 6 on that chart after a single entitled "Keep On Running" from their second album entered the UK singles charts. "Their First LP" is blues driven, and much of the album consists of covers from blues artists. However, there are also some original pieces composed by Spencer Davis and by Steve Winwood. Spencer Davis went on to solo and collaborative work after The Spencer Davis Group, eventually becoming an executive for Island Records. Steve Winwood would of course move on to a storied career as a rock musician.Bruce brings this blues-laced proto-rock album to the podcast. My BabeThis track leads off the album. While the Spencer Davis Group did not release this as a single, it reached number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1963 when it was originally released by its writers, Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. Hatfield and Medley are better known as The Righteous Brothers.DimplesThis cover was the first single released from the album, preceding the album by almost a year. The original was written and recorded by blues artist John Lee Hooker in 1956 as an ensemble piece. It was the first Hooker record to appear on the British record charts, though it would take until 1964 to reach the charts. While the Hooker single charted, the Spencer Davis Group cover did not chart.Sittin' and Thinkin'Here is an original song amongst an album dominated by covers. Spencer Davis wrote this song. It was released as a single, the fourth from the album, but only in the Netherlands. It Hurts Me SoThe closing track to the album was written by Steve Winwood. It was not released as a single, but it is an example of Winwood's early blues-influenced work. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Night Before by the Beatles (from the motion picture "Help!" )This film showcased the Beatles in a comedy adventure as the group tries to protect Ringo from an eastern cult. STAFF PICKS:Agent Double-O-Soul by Edwin StarrJames Bond is the obvious inspiration for Wayne's staff pick. Edwin Starr was singing with The Bill Dogett Combo when he went to the cinema to watch the Bond feature, "Thunderball." He wound up watching it 3 times before going back to his hotel room to write this song. Bill Dogett rejected his pitch to sing solo on this tune, so Starr left the group to become a solo act.I Want Candy by The StrangelovesRob brings us a tune by songwriters Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard Gottehrer. They took on the persona of Australian sheep farmer brothers turned band members Giles, Miles, and Niles Strangelove for this group. This song with a Bo Diddley beat was inspired by dancer Candy Johnson who was seen at the 1964 Worlds Fair. Bow Wow Wow would have a hit with a cover of this song in the 80's.Since I Lost My Baby by The Temptations Lynch's staff pick comes from Motown in the form of a lover's lament written by Smokey Robinson and Warren Moore. It hit number 17 on the US charts. The Temptations would be a huge hitmaker in the 60's both with David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards on lead vocals.Same Old Song by The Four TopsBruce's staff pick features an American vocal quartet from Detroit who helped to define the Motown sound. This Holland-Dozier-Holland song hit number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 2 on the Billboard R&B chart. Lead singer Levi Stubbs was joined by Duke Fakir, Obie Benson, and Lawrence Payton to form the quartet, and they would remain together from 1953 until 1997 without a change in personnel. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The "In" Crowd by The Ramsey Lewis TrioThis jazz single hit number 2 on the R&B chart and number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Ramsey Lewis Trio would receive a Grammy Award for the album of the same name in 1966.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Paranoid, the second studio album by Black Sabbath, to be the number one of its "100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time." Originally known by the name Earth, the band took the name Black Sabbath from a 1963 horror film starring Boris Karloff. The band members were Bill Ward on percussion, Geezer Butler on bass, Tony Iommi on guitar, and Ozzy Osbourne on vocals. It was originally a heavy blues band from Birmingham, England, but took on a darker complexion with lyrics of doom.Much of the music on Paranoid was developed during jams while the band was on the road. This album was panned by critics at the time, but it reached number 12 on the US charts. This is quite a feat, considering that the band received virtually no airplay on rock radio when the album came out. It would come to be considered a great heavy metal album, and Black Sabbath would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Wayne brings us this forerunner of prog rock and heavy metal. War PigsThe lead track for the album was originally going to be called "Walpurgis," a term for a black magic wedding or a Satanic version of Christmas. The label had concerns about this and had them change the title to War Pigs. The lyrics are about warmongers trying to get the working class to fight the wars for them.Paranoid This was the band's only top 10 hit in the UK, and it went to number 61 in the US. Though named "paranoid," the song is really about depression. The riffs bear a striking resemblance to Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown." Led Zeppelin was one of the band's favorite groups at the time.Rat SaladThis track is largely a guitar and drum solo. The name comes from a joke about Ward's hair not being combed. This would be used in concerts as "filler" to give the vocalists a break.Iron Man One of the more famous singles from Black Sabbath, it became even more famous after being used in Marvel's Iron Man movie. The lyrics are about a man who travels to the future and sees the apocalypse. When he returns to the present, he is turned into steel, ignored by the population he tries to warn, and turns vengeful - causing the destruction seen in his vision. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”This sitcom set in Minneapolis benefitted from early 70's feminism as it featured a single career-oriented woman making her way on her own. STAFF PICKS:It's A Shame by The SpinnersBruce's staff pick brought the Spinners a hit at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, their first hit in about 5 years. This single was co-written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright in their first collaboration. Wonder and Wright would get married in September of 1970. The Spinners would go on to have bigger success after signing with Atlantic in 1972.War by Edwin Starr Rob brings us a classic protest song. "War! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing." Motown first released this song with the Temptations, but Starr would take it to number 1 with a heavier sound, reminiscent of James Brown. The Undisputed Truth is the backing band on this song.I Want to Take You Higher by Ike and Tina Turner Brian's staff pick is a cover originally performed by Sly & the Family Stone. Ike and Tina Turner would take this song to number 13 on the charts, so they did ineed take it higher than the original which peaked at number 38.Tighter Tighter by Alive 'N Kickin' Wayne features a one-hit wonder written by Tommy James that Alive N' Kickin' took to number 7. The group split up shortly after the single fell off the charts. They would reform in 1976, and still perform from time to time today. Despite being a pop love song, it has a surprisingly solid guitar riff. NOVELTY TRACK:Rubber Duckie by ErnieThis Sesame Street song was on the pop charts a number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September of 1970.

Edwin Starr gave us the perfect title for both halves of this episode. :'D Good God... or at least Cas is hoping God would care about his creation, even if we eventually learn the truth years down the line. The hope and faith Cas has now is destined to be shattered in horrific ways that will power his arc for the rest of the series, though, so I am here for it. And War, the first Horseman of the apocalypse we meet and definitely the easiest to defeat at least. Even if you can't actually kill War, you can see it for what it is. It's definitely an eye-opener for our heroes, yes? Seeing through the cosmic manipulation, even on this relatively low level, will become their biggest tool in defeating The Narrative™. (too bad it finally crushed them for good in the series finale, but anyWAY >.>) (yes, sorry, I end up yelling about that quite a bit, as is to be expected) (I've just accepted that every episode of the series will just involve me yelling about why the finale sucked at this point) that said, have some LINKS! Klipp och musik:Fernandos - Se Mig I ÖgonenJurassic Park (1993)Edwin Starr - Eye To Eye ContactLittle BritainFamily Guymail: dummamanniskor@gmail.comredigering: Peter Malmqvistproducent: Clara Wallin Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
