“Good luck! You'll need it!” The twin-stick shooter never fully caught on in the arcade's golden age, and yet, some years after the beloved Robotron 2084, Eugene Jarvis and his team returned to that particular mechanical interface wellspring for another go round, with 1990's spiritual successor Smash TV. Leon, Jesse, Michiel and community contributors scream bloody murder at Smash TV's ultraviolent, loud, frenetic, brutal and relentless dystopian 1999 gameshow. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_659.mp3 Music featured in this issue: 1. Big money! Big prizes! We played through the beloved twin-stick shooter, Smash TV. This one is a high-credit game and not an easy one to finish. My guest today is the American video game designer and programmer Eugene Jarvis. Born in California, he studied computer science at Berkeley, where, in the basement of the physics laboratory, he played the early video game Spacewar. After graduating he worked for Hewlitt Packard, but quit after three days to join Atari, where he began programming for some of the first computerised pinball machines. In the late seventies he joined Williams where he and a colleague came up with the idea for a side-scrolling arcade game set on an alien planet. Defender became a hit in the arcades; the game has grossed more than $1.5 billion since 1981. More hitsfollowed: Robotron 2084 –– the first twin-stick shooter -- Smash TV and Cruis'n USA. In 2008, my guest was named DePaul University's first Game Designer in Residence. He remains the only game-maker to have one of his creations featured on a U.S. postage stamp. Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hey everyone. Welcome back! It's time for the second part of Playing with Power for September 1991's issue of Nintendo Power. We talked about a lot of Mario World last week. This week we're talking about a whole lot of stuff. We've got Game Boy stuff (like Final Fantasy Adventure), NES stuff (like Kick Master), and more SNES stuff (like Castlevania.) There is so much stuff. Emmy talks about her encounter with American Gladiators, Chase ponders if anyone from The Simpsons actually signed off on Bart Simpson's "interview", and there's even some POGs in there. Er... sorry, they're "milk caps". POGs is a registered trademark. You won't wanna miss all this, come listen and feel free to follow along! You can read the magazine here (we start on the Smash TV feature).

This year, we have toasted ten rotations round the sun at parties in London, Berlin and now Amsterdam… We have birthed magnificent merch, special editions of ye old magic black plastic and musical firecrackers a-plenty…and of course atop the whole b'day cake, has been our Decade series, which throughout the last few months has commemorated this significant milestone. Welcome to the fifth and final instalment. Charles Webster x Ursula Rucker: 'Begin Anew' Charles - UK OG, bona fide house music royalty, 35 years of excellence and counting. Timo Maas X Robert Babicz: 'Eine Reise Zu Zweit' Eine Reise Zu Zweit translates into English as A Trip for Two, and who better to be your guide down the sonic highway than these two esteemed stalwarts of the scene? It broods and it burbles as it shifts through the gears, the perfect accompaniment for your next dance floor or autobahn adventure. Buckle up. Steve Parry x Mario Franca x Captain Mustache: 'Nuvem' A fitting finale to bring down the curtain on our Decade Escapade, this UK-France-Portugal l tag team sees boss man Steve in tandem with most welcome label debutants Mario 'n' Mustache concocting a rare beauty. Oh, why hello there. We've got another episode for you today. We're talking about Robocop vs. Terminator, Total Carnage, and Disney's Aladdin. What do they all have in common? Not really anything. I'm not sure why I asked. Robocop vs Terminator is the best SNES adaptation of either of those properties up to this point, but that's a low bar. Does that mean it's actually good, or simply not awful? Total Carnage has nothing to do with Spider-Man villains, but is a pseudo-sequel to Smash TV. And what's this? Did this game cause an actual disagreement between our hosts? Find out who liked it, who didn't, and where it ultimately landed in our ranking. We wrap things up with Capcom's take on Disney's take on Aladdin. Is it any good? Yes. How good? C'mon, you have to listen to find that out. All this, a deep dive about Shinji Mikami, and more on this episode of SNEScapades.

We're back after a 7-month break because we're nothing if not dynamic go-getters. And as always with every 5th episode it's an unstructured Stream of Nonsense, so strap in for listening joy as your hosts AC and Rob discuss the Big Tennis Racket, speedos, the joy of a samey sequel, Mickey Mouse's lack of comedic talent, how good Smash TV is (spoilers - it's very good), weird versions of DOOM, the John Candy classic Uncle Buck, and obnoxious method actors. In video game news, Wormsfest 2023 was a hit, AC has been playing Atari 50 and got his paws on another version of the thrilling Japanese train driving game Densha de Go!, while Rob has done nothing but play Hell Let Loose for the last 6 months and is looking more grizzled than a McDonalds quarter pounder patty. Plus AC goes joyriding in a vintage car, the podcast moves to Anchor FM, and more!

Hannes Bieger x Luke Brancaccio x Gai Barone, Just Her x Smash TV, Darksidevinyl x Rancido, Stelios Vassiloudis x Just Her We are reasonable people. This is why we have given you a chance to pause for breath. Which frankly, was much needed after the 8 collaborative beauties we have delivered so far on EPs I & II. Staggering these, er, staggering Decade EP releases to give you ample time to digest fully the magnitude of the creativity so far felt like the right thing to do, but resting on our laurels for too long is just not in our DNA, so here we go again, comrades. Here are tracks 9-12 in Selador's relentless charge to dominate this thing we call clubland through 2023. 4 more collaborations, 8 more artists, but the number of calories lost dancing to these beauties, the number of dancefloors that will erupt as they ooze out of speaker stacks worldwide – well, your guess is as good as ours! So without any further ado, let us introduce you to the extended family members at the controls for Volume 3. Hannes Bieger x Luke Brancaccio x Gai Barone: ‘Reflections Like a long-lost love child of ‘French Kiss'and ‘Sacred Cycles', our titanic trio have created a hypnotic masterpiece that immediately takes up welcome residence in the deepest recesses of your bonce, before washing over you like the warmest of sonic seas. Just Her x Smash TV: ‘All I See is Us' Two artists who have been with us since back in the proverbial day, team up for bass-busting beast where whipcracking percussion underpins a plethora of roof-raising riffage. Endlessly energising electronica for the ages worthy of the alliteration. Darkside Vinyl x Rancido: ‘Omega' Nurse, my pills! This is getting crazy, as another Selador stalwart, the man like Darksidevinyl, teams up with label debutant Rancido for this high-octane slice of melodic afro jackery-pokery that stomps like a herd of thirsty wildebeest spotting a desert oasis. Humungous. Stelios Vassiloudis x Just Her: ‘Weightless' Guess who's back, back again? Yep, after a quick half marathon between studio sessions, Just Her joins forces with another long-time label friend, the inimitable Stelios Vassiloudis, for a unique slice of rulebook-trashing, quirky organic techno with Claire's wondrous vocal to the fore. Heavenly. Soak ‘em up party people. Three is the magic number. Team Selador x https://www.beatport.com/release/selador-decade-ep-3/4110381

Eugene Jarvis cut his teeth in the Atari pinball division before going on to produce the groundbreaking Defender for Williams Electronics. Also for Williams (contracted as Vid Kids, his new company with Defender co-creator Larry DeMar) was Stargate, Robotron: 2084 and Blaster. Jarvis left Vid Kids in 1984 to attend Stanford University where he gained an MBA in 1986. He then returned to Williams to design the OTT run and gun title Narc (programmed by George Petro) and, with Mark Turmell, Robotron's spiritual successor, Smash TV. To this day Eugene produces popular arcade video game titles for his own studio, Raw Thrills Inc.

Hey Skele-friends! Sorry about the late upload! This week on Stop Skeletons From Podcasting, Derek and Grace talk about their mutually traumatizing weeks (KIDDING!) and the upcoming video. It's spooky season! Stephen is SO over it, but he can't escape all the scary stuff happening in this week's episode. We start with a lesson on the necromantic arts of branding and iconography, guided by Mark, a master of these dark magics. After the break, Ellen raises a past topic from the dead in order to explore the ethics of manipulating players' brainnnsssss. Also mentioned: candy corn, houseplants, and—you guessed it—Star Trek. So, we've got our latest showcase primed and ready to go and face a dilemma. We have no less than eight (count 'em) new tracks to tell you about, a stunning sonic smorgasbord that summarises all Selador holds dear. But with our collective attention spans allegedly getting shorter, our poor befuddled minds crushed between vapid soundbites and oppressive 'long reads' – how do we do them all justice in a press release that hits that 'perfect length' sweet spot? And of course, while we yak on, your time could be better spent listening to the aforementioned sonic smorgasbord. So, the challenge we have set ourselves is to get you as excited as we are about this titanic tuneage while limiting ourselves to a max ten words per track – and without using the words 'banger', 'anthem' or 'piledriver' (the boss noticed our over-use of that last one). So without any further ado… Nick Stoynoff – '35' Episodic, wide-screen tribal builder. 24 carat electronica outta Chicago. Indiveed – 'Suspense' Atmospheric, burbling, insistent, quirky, original. The sound of underground Ukraine. Dor Danino – 'Mezoti' Edgy, sultry techno vibes care of our man in Israel. Jonathan Cowan – 'Alden's Groove' Wonky. Timeless. Euphoric. A modern classic from a Florida OG. Darksidevinyl – 'Plastic Dream' Dark by name dark by nature. Peak time Egyptian throbber. Smash TV – 'Slider' Teutonic techno dons deliver mindbending melodica, genius riff, epic breakdown. Folgar feat Paula Os – Playground Deep, sexy electronica. 80s vibes through a 2022 Argentinean lens. Matthias Winnfield – 'Flatliner' Bubbling, acidic, heads down rave monster, full-on Turkish delight.

There's conversation about a different Jarvis. This one connects to Smash TV. There's also talk of Ghosts of Tsushima. That's because we have two warriors back to back preparing to fight the hordes. Classic MCU moment as Iron Man and War Machine lower their helmets. Bad ass. And the Marine drone raises its own face shield. Fighting styles are compared. Rhodey kicks like a biker. Oil spatters War Machine's face. New technology shows up mysteriously: Advanced Micro-Munition Launchers. But seriously... War Machine. So great in this minute.

This week the Bois take a good hard long look into the sun without protection... The land of the rising sun that is, with a selection of games that have a decidedly Japanese spin to them, one of which didn't even make it overseas! The main focus of this chat being "The Firemen", a top-down , Smash TV style 4 way shooter and "King of Demons", also known as "Majyuuou". A somewhat earlier Castlevania/Metroid styled romp through the depths of the underworld with a darker, more macabre theme than most SNES games of the time. The Bois also look back on past console purchases, the state of expensive collectors items and regrets of not reselling when we had the chance! Enjoy!
