Devorah Heitner is a new friend from The Zen Parenting Conference. I really appreciated what she had to say about doing more mentoring and less monitoring with our kids and their screens. This feels like a really hard time to be raising teens and dealing with all the tech. Cutting off access to technology isn't reasonable, so how can we engage with our teens about how they use tech? How can we resist over-monitoring with school portals and Find my iPhone at our disposal? How can we teach teens self-regulation with their own screen time? Devorah shares ways we can help our adolescents notice how tech makes them feel so they can better self-regulate. She shares thoughts on the difference between a mistake and a chronic problem, seeing our kid's posts, and what she's hearing from teens about their experience right now. We discuss how we can make sure our kids know we're really there for them when things go wrong, when kids want to be influencers, and how to manage it if we find our teens are doing harm online. Takeaways from the show Devorah's New Book: “Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World” Technology is how teens connect with their friends and peers Sharing your own experiences online Tracking your teen's location via their phone - more or less stress? Having conversations, not lectures Even though we know technology, our teens grew up with it in an entirely different way & they think we're clueless It's good that adolescents do brave, scary, & hard things (even when they scare us) - otherwise they'd never try anything Kids who want to be influencers, YouTubers, & go viral What to do if your kid is being harmed or harming others online Being open & curious about your teen's world & resisting assumptions For more details, including transcripts, visit our website here. Kyle and Duffy discuss whether or not the way we should approach teaching to teens has changed at all since the advent of the smartphone.

SHARE THIS EPISODE WITH A STRUGGLING TEEN IN YOUR LIFE. Today we have something long overdue in the sense that we've been wanting to talk about it for a couple of years, but we knew we had to get it right when we did. Teenagers have never been our target audience, and it's not because they don't need these tools as much, and often more, than adults. I hear so often from concerned adults who badly want to help the young people in their lives get relief from chronic symptoms: Anxiety, migraines, stomach problems, and so many other struggles. Most of you listening already understand the relationship between perfectionism, achievement, self-criticism, and all the qualities we know are the breeding ground for TMS. So many teenagers find themselves in this debacle. But being a parent myself, I know you have to talk to teens differently - find them where they are, break through to them and build credibility in a different way. One night, Lisa and I were talking about all of this and her teenage daughter, Kate, got involved in the conversation. She broke the news: the only people teenagers will take their information from is other teenagers. We knew she was right. Not only is Kate an awesome communicator, she has her own TMS story. After a childhood of debilitating stomachaches that sidelined her in the most important areas of her life, the pain mysteriously ended (anyone who knows about the Symptom Imperative knows it wasn't mysterious) and she began struggling with anxiety and a feeling of being stuck. It was then that she began to JournalSpeak and saw, as she describes, "magical" changes in her life. She is now officially a member of TCFCP Team - our first teen ambassador. Today she comes on the pod for her debut interview, and we discuss it ALL. Spoiler - she's a JournalSpeak badass of the highest order. She will help you get right down to it, no matter your age. We discuss it all, as we embark upon the adventure of creating a message crafted by teens, for teens. There's never a shortage of news stories about someone in a position of power or authority who has physically, emotionally, or sexually abused a child or an adolescent in their care. We've seen it in schools, churches, sports organizations - anywhere adults are in charge of young people. And for all the high-profile cases, there are thousands more that perhaps involve fewer kids or a not-so-famous organization and still more than go unreported. When one of these stories come to light, our questions are always the same. How did this happen? Why did these kids not say something? Why didn't they tell someone? Why didn't they ask their parents for help? I believe the answer's pretty simple: it's because we've taught our kids to keep their mouths shut. We've taught them to “respect authority”, to “obey their elders”, to “not talk back”, to “do what they're told”...and by doing so, we've put them at great risk for harm. Join me this week as I examine how we can change the narrative with our kids about “respecting authority” to do a better job of keeping them safe from predatory and abusive adults in positions of power or trust. Most children learn to say "please" and "thank you" at a young age. But what does it mean to have good manners as a teenager and why is that important? Having good manners such as pitching in, introducing yourself, and being a good passenger have long-reaching effects. Teens with manners have more confidence and others enjoy being around them. So how can you teach manners to your teens? In this episode, Brooke Romney discusses the wonderful resource she has created, " 52 Modern Manners For Today's Teens", that makes it easy and natural for teens to apply these tips into their lives.
On today's show, Ray speaks to John Hayes after his wooden sculpture was destroyed on the Waterford Greenway last week; photographer James Crombie tells us about his new exhibition; Quality Street goes from plastic to paper; and John Lowe wants to improve the financial literacy of teenagers.
Parenting adolescents is emotionally challenging! At a time when we want our kids to take more responsibility, and tackle the challenges that they're facing, they want to pull the covers over their head and go back to sleep! In this episode, I'm sharing a story about an emotionally challenging experience I had over the summer which is the PERFECT example of what life with teens feels like (and how to show up as the parent you want to be in those moments) . What's the best way to approach teaching passages of Scripture to teens? In this episode Kyle, Linda, and Matt talk about various approaches, like taking a small passage and going through it slowly over the course of several weeks vs. tackling a larger passage or whole book of the Bible and covering it in only a week or two. What are the pros and cons of each? What does it look like to slow things down? Are there things we need to be concerned with or avoid if we take this approach? Dive into this episode to learn more.
Today's podcast digs into a subject that seems to have fallen out of conversational topics which is consequences. In an era of social media driven mantras of 'living in the moment', it is important now more than ever to talk with our teens about the future and not only "what they want to be when they grow up". Take initiative to the next step by purchasing my custom made Parent's Lesson Plan on how to address the subject of consequences with your teen. The information in your document is meant to give insight and assistance to you as a parent, guardian, or teacher in addressing challenging subjects with your teenager. The worksheet includes definitions to what will be addressed and four sections: A) The Prevailing Obstacles B) What Culture is Saying C) What Scripture Says and D) Ways to Start a Conversation with Your Teen. We know that because of their changing brain, teens and tweens are much more likely than adults or children to succumb to their unpleasant (“negative”) emotions like frustration, anger, nervousness, and gloominess. For the same reason, they're much more likely to engage in risky behaviors like substance use, reckless driving, posting inappropriately online and sex. The part of the brain that helps make good decisions and use self-control is much weaker than those emotional and risk-taking parts! So, how can we help? We can help them strengthen this weaker part of the brain by modeling and by coaching them through emotional moments. This helps develop their emotional awareness and emotional regulation skills, two important elements of emotional intelligence. Increasing emotional intelligence is critical in helping our kids respond appropriately in emotional and/or risky situations. Listen as I explain emotional intelligence, the ways it helps teens succeed and most importantly, how you can help your teen increase theirs. Speaking of Teens is sponsored by https://neurogility.com, where you can find lots of wonderful resources for parents of teens and tweens. I founded neurogility after my teenage son went through a couple of really difficult years dealing with anxiety, major depression and substance use with all of the accompanying academic, social, legal and behavior issues. After finding a path forward, I decided I had to help educate other moms about parenting their teens in a more respectful and emotionally intelligent manner. Please share this episode with another mom you think it may benefit and follow me right here where you're listening. Her advocacy work is now focused at the state and national levels. She is proud to be a NextGen Personal Finance Fellow, Co-Teacher at the Champlain College Center for Financial Literacy's Summer Institute, and volunteer conference planner with the state Jump$tart Coalition. Last week we focused on WORK - now this week we're focusing on relaxation. However, it might not be the relaxation you're thinking of... While vacations and bubble baths and binging Netflix are definitely fun and relaxing and they help us escape our hard stuff, they don't actually help us deal with and get through our hard stuff. So, in this week's episode, we want to make sure our daughters know how to find peace and calm while dealing with the really difficult - and we do that through something called active relaxation.
