Here's an alternative to reading the news, getting upset, and wondering how we can stop anti-2SLGBTQ prejudice and hate-fuelled movements: study and understand history. What's happening today, is not just about 2SLGBTQ rights and freedoms, it's about our common humanity and the ethical belief that no one person is superior to another. Recently, the term “pinkwashing” has garnered attention in the context of Israel's continuous genocide of the Palestinian people. Join us as we delve into the conceptual framework of “homonationalism” in order to understand the foundation behind how queers are utilized within nationalist agendas. This longer episode pulls from entire books, like Puar's influential 2007 work, “Terrorist Assemblages: Homonationalism in Queer Times,” which has not yet been translated into Japanese. It is not a comprehensive overview but, offers Pirikara Queer's understanding of concepts like “homonormativity” and “homonationalism” to unpack the roots of queer politics! Often people ask me why I am still single, or sometimes I ask myself the same question. In this episode, I'll delve into the complexities of modern dating, aiming to uncover shared experiences and hopefully find some common ground. I will also briefly address the current political situation in the Netherlands and discuss the concept of homonationalism, as I believe it is important for our community to be aware of this.References in this episode:Todd Baratz: YourDiagnonsenseAlan Downs: The Velvet RageAsk me anything: QueerlyHavingIssues

We had the privilege of speaking with Jamil Fiorino-Habib after hearing their talk at a Palestinian solidarity event hosted by RAFI (Raising Awareness and Funds Initiative) in Amsterdam on November 19th. We explore themes of pink-washing and homonationalism in relation to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine. Jamil provides an incredibly incisive, sensitive, personal, political and nuanced perspective on the way traditional media continues to be used to dispossess and dehumanize Palestinians, as well as the current ways in which social media platforms are being used to disseminate images and information. This is an incredibly urgent topic and an episode we highly recommend taking the time to listen to. We encourage you to continue to educate yourself, listen, take action and demand human rights for those who have been stripped of them. Jamil is a lecturer in the Media & Culture BA program at University of Amsterdam, teaching courses on topics such as Media Aesthetics, Film Analysis, Philosophy of the Humanities, and Media Research. "RAFI (Raising Awareness and Funds Initiative) is an Amsterdam founded initiative that aims to raise awareness and funds in support of and in solidarity with dire global political currents. We aim to respond to different (yet intersecting) forms of oppression regionally and globally through local collectivization and collaboration...RAFI follows the initiative of radically deconstructing our thought patterns and putting our collaborative efforts to use for those politically oppressed."Cover image credit: Jamil Fiorino-HabibTo stay up to date with MFMM follow us on instagram @multifemalemegamixTo buy our merch DM us on insta xxxIntro track by Whiterose Don't Go We'll Fund Them is a trans-led subscription-based fundraiser to support trans people in the Netherlands.Subscribe here or follow them on instagram.
Twelve hundred Israelis were killed by Hamas. Perhaps 15,000 Gazans have died as Israel has pursued its attacker, many Hamas fighters among them. But those numbers alone do not help us understand the concept of proportionality in international law. Ben Wittes of Lawfare is here to help us think through the idea. Plus, delving into "Homonationalism." Also on the show, Rudy has defamed and also suffers from having lesser fame than his old client, Donald Trump. In 2019, the Indian government unilaterally revoked the autonomy of the disputed region of Kashmir amidst one of the harshest and longest military blockades and communications blackouts in history of the region In 2019, the Indian government unilaterally revoked the autonomy of the disputed region of Kashmir amidst one of the harshest and longest military blockades and communications blackouts in history of the region. While the move was primarily justified as a national security imperative that would also bring economic prosperity to Kashmir, one of the tertiary arguments that was put forth in support of the move was a celebration of the revocation of autonomy as a victory for LGBTQ+ rights. How did a right-wing Hindu nationalist government, which had - less than a decade ago - vociferously opposed LGBTQ+ rights, suddenly adopt such progressive rhetoric? Was there any truth to the government's claims or was it yet another form of "pinkwashing" intended for an international audience? And what does the adoption of LGBTQ+ rights language by the Indian government in Kashmir mean for the broader future of LGBTQ+ rights in India? Anish Gawande is a writer and a translator. He is the Director of the Dara Shikoh Fellowship in India and the Curator of Pink List India, the country's first archive of politicians supporting LGBTQIA+ rights. Anish Gawande is currently a Rhodes Scholar finishing his MPP degree in Intellectual History at Oxford.
Finishing off our discussion of fascism through essays from "Leatherfolk" that complicate the problem of desire, and use that to move onto contemporary queerness to look at how homonationalism and homonormativity haunts the discourse on all sides. How is it that such deeply regressive notions are laundered into our understandings of queer and trans identity? Maybe the answer can be glimpsed in the mess of erotocism all along.Show Notes:"Fascinating Fascism" in Susan Sontag's "Under the Sign of Saturn""Leatherfolk" anthology edited by Mark Thompson"Terrorist assemblages: Homonationalism in Queer Times" by Jasbir K. Dr. Mia Fischer joins me to talk about systems of power, and the way that they refuse to change, even when they appear to do so. Our military has recently incorporated, then unincorporated, then reincorporated openly-trans folks. Our prisons often house incarcerated people in the wrong facilities based on their assigned birth gender. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Any good hegemonic system will begin with this foundation. Unless we work towards systemic change, the small battles we win will accomplish little within the bigger systems of control. When marijuana is legalized, drug enforcement units target shrooms. When shrooms are decriminalized, drug enforcement units target other illegal drugs. And when all drugs are decriminalized, officers target sex workers, or other petty "crimes" which we would do better to legalize and regulate.

It began as a mysterious disease from a far off place. It turned into the deadliest plague humanity has faced since the Black Death. AIDS has ravaged and reshaped us in so many ways. But in Canada, the battle against AIDS wasn’t just a fight against a virus. It was a fight against a system that didn’t care if some people lived or died. Today, using a student-generated interview guide, I will be having a conversation with Emma Cameron. Emma is a graduate student in health promotion at Dalhousie University. For her thesis, she is examining The Postnatal Healthcare Experiences of Resettled Syrian Refugees in Nova Scotia. Today, we are primarily interested in Emma’s work with the Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia. Students prepared for creating this interview guide by reading “Homonationalism as Assemblage: Viral Travels, Affectives Sexualities,” a 2015 article by Jasbir K. Puar. Students created interview questions that in many cases were informed by the Puar reading but that would nonetheless make sense to listeners unfamiliar with this work.
James talks to a psychologist in Germany confronting one of the most startling strategies used by the far-right: homonationalism. The concept of homonationalism was developed by Jasbir Puar, a professor at Rutgers. It's often used to describe how far-right parties like the Alternative for Germany ally with LGBT community to vilify Muslim immigrants. That's a particular concern for Aileen Kakavand, who counsels LGBT migrants and refugees with Muslim backgrounds. Kakavand condemns the hypocrisy of far-right politicians like Beatrix von Storch and Nicolaus Fest for pledging to protect homosexuals from Muslims while seeking to curtail homosexual rights. First, Tom and James talk about populism and pop music. Kanye West, Lorde and Taylor Swift are among stars who’ve plunged into politics. Programledare: Ursula Berge. Producent: Ylva Mossing.
Homonationalism: it's a big word and kind of a complex idea, but with LGBTI rights increasingly a flashpoint for cultural conflict around the globe Simon and Benjamin decide to wade in. At this international intersection of colonialism, racism and queerphobia, is it even possible to make a positive difference? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
