This week, we're diving into the first chapter of the oft-maligned second volume of Little Women. The war is over, wedding bells are ringing, and the March girls are growing up -- but at what cost? Our guest this week is the legendary Sarah Schulman. Sarah is a writer, activist, and AIDS historian. She's written dozens of books, plays, and films. Her most recent book, Let the Record Show, won the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Nonfiction. She was an active member of ACT UP and she co-founded the Lesbian Avengers, the direct action group the organized the first Dyke March. She's been named a Guggenheim Fellow in playwriting and a Fulbright Fellow in Judaic Studies. She's on the advisory board of Jewish Voice for Peace and she's an endowed chair in creative writing at Northwestern. Our cover art is by Mattie Lubchansky. It interpolates the cover art for Bethany C. Morrow's book "So Many Beginnings: A Little Women Remix," with permission from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group. It also interpolates the cover art for Hena Khan's book “More to the Story,” with permission from Simon & Schuster. Our theme music is Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major. Every year on the eve of New York City's Pride March, the LGBTQ rights movements goes back to its roots. Tens of thousands of self-identifying dykes march down Fifth Avenue demonstrating their first amendment right to protest. For the 30th Anniversary of the Dyke March, we're talking about the evolution of the march. Founding organizer Valarie Walker takes us back to the first ever NYC march and talks about how much has changed. Organizer Nate Shalev explains this year's theme, Dykes for Trans Liberation, and why the march continues to be a protest, not a parade.

Trigger Warning: depression, suicide, anxiety, trauma, abuse. Today, we're joined by a true powerhouse and inspiration: Alyy Patel. A trailblazing LGBTQ+ scholar, activist, writer, and influencer, Alyy has pioneered Canadian research on queer South Asian women's issues. Alyy is gay, gender-fluid, and Indo-African Gujarati. Throughout their career, Alyy has accomplished so many firsts for South Asian women, including being the first South Asian speaker at Toronto's Dyke March. Oh, and did we mention they're only 25? We sit down with Alyy to pull back the curtain and find out what goes into being a true trailblazer. Alyy gets candid with us about their struggles with mental health and abuse, and how it led them to dive deeper into activism. We learn all about Alyy's thriving non-profit organization — the Queer South Asian Women's Network — and how it's creating a safe space for queer Indian women around the world. Most of all, we talk about the complex relationship between South Asian culture and queerness. And how all of us (with the help of leaders like Alyy) can continue to foster openness and inclusion. Instead of just being about the LGBT community, this march is about hating America and hating Israel...just look at the propaganda they put out. This is what our children are learning.

WLRN's 40th edition podcast takes a look at the current state of lesbians within what is now known as the LGBTQ+ movement, by exploring women's experiences at this year's Pride Parades and Dyke Marches. In this August 1st broadcast of our monthly news program, April Neault delivers the latest in women's news, followed by our featured song, "Whole Woman" by Ali Bee, written about a dyke march that was taken over by men. http://alibeemusic.com/ Next, you'll hear an interview with Eli and Jen, two lesbians who participated in this year's Dyke March in New York City who were barred from marching by trans activists who were Dyke March officials. Next up, Sofia Simonson of the Lancashire Resisters speaks with WLRN's Sekhmet SheOwl about the Resisters' demonstration this year at Lancaster Pride. They too encountered trans activists but had a "street plan" before they went and managed to maintain a lesbian feminist presence for quite some time before being taken over by the mobs. Finally, for our commentary this month, we have chosen to re-broadcast Thistle's commentary from Edition 31, which is once again particularly relevant to today's program. As mentioned in this month's show, the Lesbian Strength March is coming up this September in the UK—a pro-female event created by and for lesbians. Whether you identify as lesbian, bisexual, queer, or ace, (cue Cheers theme song) sometimes you wanna go where everybody is a dyke. But when lesbian bars are closing down at the pace of Shane’s love life, we need to create new dyke spaces while supporting those that still exist. Alex Koones, the founder of Babetown dinner parties for queer women and trans and non-binary people, joined us to tell us about the dyke spaces she frequents, and the one she created. Why do we seek out these spaces? How have they changed over the years? How do you create dyke spaces in your community? This episode was recorded the Monday after NYC Pride, so Carolyn and Sarah also share how they celebrated, including Sarah’s thoughts on her first Dyke March. We end the episode with a listener’s question about internalized homophobia while trying to date women. -Come see past and future guests tell jokes on July 29 at Stonewall. We went to San Francisco for Pride, but skipped Pride. Instead, we attended Trans March and Dyke March, and enjoyed ourselves on Cousin Vinnie's boat. Trans March was wonderful, Dyke March was super, and the houseboat was quite pleasant, but we also had Child#2 to manage, and that always makes things a little more challenging. We are here to share our entire intersectional experience with anyone who finds it beneficial, but we want to know what you connect with the most. Pride weekend brought the party and the bullshit, y'all. This episode is a little longer than I would normally like, but a theydie had some THOUGHTS. PrideFest and the march were incredible experiences. I'm disappointed in how much of what was going on behind the scenes was mismanaged and how that affects us as a community. The whole experience was alarmingly saturated with corporate visibility and NYC Pride needs to figure out how to get back to its roots. On June 28, I had the very special privilege of being fed by and hearing the first hand account from Martin Boyce, one of the Stonewall vets. A very special thank you to Timorell and Steady Mess for a beautiful evening at PrideTable. I won't ever, ever forget it. As incredible as World Pride and Stonewall 50 weekend was, it's important to remember there's still work to do. On Saturday, the cops forced Queen Amor (a queer person of color) out of Washington Square Park during the celebrations following the Dyke March. On Thursday night, a Black trans woman demanded to be heard to speak about the murders of Black trans women in America. The patrons jeered and threatened to call the cops on her. Among the souls who stood up for her were Leada Stray, who shared her account of what unfolded. Go to jolee.link/week7 to watch the video. In the next 11 months until Pride 2020, I'm sending you love, joy, and more Pride. Stay wonderful, Jo Lee

On October 25th, Thistle spoke with three lesbians by phone about their experiences at the San Francisco Dyke March on June 23rd. The march took place soon after the unveiling of the San Francisco Public Library's "art exhibit" featuring the Degenderettes' baseball bats and hatchets in barbed wire in addition to a red paint-stained t-shirt that said "I punch TERFs." The unveiling of this exhibit paved the way for anti-lesbian and anti-woman sentiment and harassment to thrive at the San Francisco Dyke March and also for anti-feminists around the world at other Gay Pride and Lesbian events to have a strong presence. Hear these three women share their personal stories and how they touched and influenced women across the globe. The song featured is "What's Up" by 4 Non-Blondes.
