The Theological Metaphors of Marx (Duke UP, 2024) by Enrique Dussel – A Conversation with Camilo Pérez-Bustillo and Eduardo Mendieta In The Theological Metaphors of Marx, Enrique Dussel provides a groundbreaking combination of Marxology, theology, and ethical theory. Dussel shows that Marx unveils the theology of capitalism in his critique of commodity fetishization. Capitalism constitutes an idolatry of the commodity that undergirds the capitalist expropriation of labor. Dussel examines Marx's early writings on religion and fetishism and proceeds through what Dussel refers to as the four major drafts of Capital, ultimately situating Marx's philosophical, economic, ethical, and historical insights in relation to the theological problems of his time. Dussel notes a shift in Marx's underlying theological schema from a political critique of the state to an economic critique of the commodity fetish as the Devil, or anti-God, of modernity. Marx's thought, impact, and influence cannot be fully understood without Dussel's historic reinterpretation of the theological origins and implications of Marx's critiques of political economy and politics. Enrique Dussel (1934–2023) was Emeritus Professor, Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa, and the author of many books, including Twenty Theses on Politics and Ethics of Liberation: In the Age of Globalization and Exclusion, both also published by Duke University Press.Camilo Pérez-Bustillo is coauthor of Human Rights, Hegemony, and Utopia in Latin America.Eduardo Mendieta is Professor of Philosophy and Latina/o Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Director Tomas Gomez-Bustillo magical tale, CHRONICLES OF A WANDERING SAINT focuses on a tiny rural village in Argentina, where Rita Lopez, (Monica Villa) a pious yet insatiably competitive woman, decides that staging a miracle could be her ticket to sainthood. After discovering a lost statue in the back room of her chapel, she convinces her neglected but loving husband to help her orchestrate the grand reveal that will finally anoint her as the most admired woman in town. But before the unveiling, a jarring turn of events illuminates the hidden magic of her world, forcing her to reevaluate everything she once took for granted. Director / Screenwriter Tomas Gomez-Bustillo (Museum of Fleeting Wonders) stops by to talk about his inspiration for his delightfully off kilter, magical tale of flawed people doing very human things to and for one another, recruiting this wonderful cast of actors, led by Monica Villa, Horacio Moseinco, Dahyana Turkie, Noemi Ron and Ana Silvia Mackenzie, and his reaction to the three Spirit Award nominations in 2024. Dennis is joined via Zoom by Argentine-born filmmaker Tomás Gómez Bustillo to talk about his delightful, three-time Indie Spirit Award-nominated film Chronicles of a Wandering Saint, which was first mentioned on this podcast earlier this year when Drew Droege raved about it during our year-end movie wrap-up. The movie is about an elderly woman in a small rural town in Argentina named Rita (Wild Tales Monica Villas) who is so competitive with the other ladies from her church that she fakes a miracle to try and improve her status. Tomás talks about how the film was partly inspired by the time he spent as a young Catholic missionary in towns just like Rita's. He also talks--cryptically--about the giant swerve the movie takes halfway through and how many people he shared the script with told him he could never pull it off. He also recalls getting rejected by Sundance and another major festival and actually having a ritual where he let it go. He burned a piece of paper with the film's name on it, thanked the film for all it had brought to his life and accepted that it wasn't going to be a festival movie...and then days later, he got accepted by South By Southwest, where the film was a breakout hit. Other topics include: graduating college with a degree in Political Science in Argentina and then leaving that path behind to study film at AFI in Los Angeles, his love for magical realism, how his pursuit of music led to him discovering filmmaking, why The Lion King f-ed him up as a kid and the movie costume he wish he owned so he could wear it around the house. www.chroniclesofawanderingsaint.com
On today's episode I have writer, director, and producer, Tomás Gómez Bustillo! His new film, "Chronicles of a Wandering Saint" opens in theaters in New York this Friday, June 28th, and Los Angeles, and other cities July 5th. I was so intrigued by the story and the trailer to the film (see below) was so captivating that I had to learn more about this film and more about Tomas ever growing career in film making. "Chronicles of a Wandering Saint" initially premiered at SXSW last year, winning the Adam Yauch Hornbolower Awards, as well as earning itself 3 Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominations! I talked with Tomas about growing up in Argentina and moving around the world, his early film influences, studying politics, the art of filmmaking, moving to Los Angeles to attend AFI (American Film Institute), creating the story of "Chronicles of a Wandering Saint", and so much more. A huge Thank You to Tomas Gomez Bustillo for taking the time to join me on the show. This all came together last minute as he was getting ready to fly out to New York for the release and I was honored that he made time to come on the show in the midst of travel prep. Please support this film and get out and see it as it comes to a city near you! Check out the trailer and follow Tomas on the links at www.onthemicpodcast.com as well! Thanks, Tomas! Enjoy the episode!

QUIT THRASHING ABOUT IN THE WATER AND LIFE-PRESERVER OUR NEW EPISODE! The Boys dive into the streaming waters again and take on the French shark thriller Under Paris. Directed by new wave French horror director Xavier Gens - who counts as his new wave compadres Alexandre Aja (“High Tension”), Bustillo and Maury (“Inside”), and Pascal Laugier (“Martyrs”) - Sous La Seine (it's original French title) chums viewer expectations with the ultimate B movie Jaws-ripoff scenario: a shark in the Seine and the catacombs of Paris. Will streaming audiences take a bite out of this thriller that has plot points touching on evolution and climate change in addition to people getting chewed up Richard Shaw style or is this an uneven paced, cringe acting, lousy CGI a la SyFy cold fish? For his plus, Emcee talks “State of the Movie Union” now that we are halfway through the film release year….there will be stats/numbers, business talk, and #saveexhibition. Cupcake takes loyal listener Chris “Judd” Hoover's suggestion and ventures into the theatres to “watch” an M. In S4Ep4 of the PRP, Adam chats it up with seasoned middle distance runner, blossoming young New Balance Speedster and all around good vibes ambassador Aidan Bustillo, who has been preparing for the Boston Marathon on Monday April 15th, 2024. Dylan Parker, aspiring elite marathoner, laboratory scientist extraordinaire and one of Aidan's athletes joins the show to offer his take on all things Strava, pickleball & coach Aidan. The banter commences with the boys learning about how Aidan's relationship with running has evolved immensely over the past few years. During his time in college, Aidan slowly began spending less time thinking about competition and more time thinking about community. Although both are crucial aspects to the health and longevity of our sport as a whole, he credits his time working at Brighton Running Lab for evolving his outlook on running in a way he never saw coming. The relationships he's built in these past few years have helped him bolster the self confidence to pursue goals in life, both in and out of the running world. Things get vulnerable when Aidan lays out his bold goals for Boston whilst the lads sermonize his recent & prolific rise in marathon distance. One thing is for certain, with a past year filled with college graduation, getting hired as a brand rep for New Balance, and running two sub 2:45 marathons, the sky's truly the limit for the emerging young Michigan-made prodigy! Ohhhh we out here bro-sodin'? Mmmm, pipin' hot nanner bread!! Plantains on the menu today?? MAKE STRAVA CASUAL AGAIN!! Normy vibes?! More pickleball drama… Crony coaching?? Egypt Valley lore?! Yap levels? Route masters?? Who exactly is Bill Kohn, and why should you be aware of him?! Discount double deuce check with Aidan from New Balance, like a good runner, Aidan is there.
