This month we were delighted to be joined by a colleague from Social and Cultural Anthropology at University of Helsinki. Stefan Millar is a Social Anthropologist who specializes in the state, migration, colonialism, and infrastructures. Stefan is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care. Our conversation focused most directly on Stefan's PhD research, which examined the role of the state in the context of Kakuma Refugee Camp in Northern Kenya. Stefan has focused on the state and infrastructures within the space of the refugee camp. Stefan gives us insight into his personal trajectory and how he got interested in the long durée implications of colonialism. In his current work in Kenya, he is looking at urban infrastructures that refugees create to mitigate the end of aid (US Aid and the withdrawal of European aid), especially in relation to food and water. Stefan is interested in how people navigate this context and what alternatives they develop to continue surviving under the conditions of redistribution of aid. On the theoretical side, we talked extensively about Stefan's critique of Giorgio Agamben's state of exception. Join us for this layered and exciting conversation!Interested to learn more about Stefan's work? https://www.helsinki.fi/en/about-us/people/people-finder/stefan-millar-9472907 Want to read Stefan's PhD dissertation? https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/files/254098602/1._EncampedStatesMillar.pdf KANERE, Kakuma based journalism:https://kanere.org/about-kakuma-refugee-camp/KRIN, network for Kakuma based refugee-led organizations:https://reframe.network/rlo/kakuma-kalobeyei-refugee-led-initiatives-kkrin

Focusing on India between the early nineteenth century and the First World War, Colonial Terror explores the centrality of the torture of Indian bodies to the law-preserving violence of colonial rule and some of the ways in which extraordinary violence was embedded in the ordinary operation of colonial states. Although enacted largely by Indians on Indian bodies, particularly by subaltern members of the police, the book argues that torture was facilitated, systematized, and ultimately sanctioned by first the East India Company and then the Raj because it benefitted the colonial regime, since rendering the police a source of terror played a key role in the construction and maitenance of state sovereignty.Drawing upon the work of both Giorgio Agamben and Michel Foucault, Colonial Terror contends, furthermore, that it is only possible to understand the terrorizing nature of the colonial police in India by viewing colonial India as a 'regime of exception' in which two different forms of exceptionality were in operation - one wrought through the exclusion of particular groups or segments of the Indian population from the law and the other by petty sovereigns in their enactment of illegal violence in the operation of the law. It was in such fertile ground, in which colonial subjects were both included within the domain of colonial law while also being abandoned by it, that torture was able to flourish.

Z historického hlediska to není žádná novinka. John and Elizabeth had the chance to talk with Ieva Jusionyte, anthropologist, journalist, emergency medical technician. Her award-winning books include Exit Wounds, which uses anthropological and journalistic methods to follow guns purchased in the United States through organized crime scenes in Mexico, and their legal, social and personal repercussions. Ieva described researching the topic, balancing structural understandings of how guns become entangled with people on both sides of the border with an emphasis on individual stories. The three also talked about how language captures and fails to capture violence, the ways violence and the fear of violence organize space, and the importance of a humble, responsive, and empathetic approach to speaking with people touched by gun violence. Mentioned in this episode: Sidney Mintz, Sweetness and Power (1985) Allen Feldman, Formations of Violence (1991) Roberto Bolaño, 2666 (2004) Yuri Herrera, Signs Preceding the End of the World (2009) tr. by Lisa Dillman, see RTB episode 48 "Transform, not Transfer: Lisa Dillman on Translation Deborah Thomas, Political Life in the Wake of the Plantation, 2019 Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian (1985) Giorgio Agamben, Homo Sacer (1998) and the "state of exception" Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (1973) and the "zone" Nathan Thrall, A Day in the Life of Abed Salama (2023) Recallable Books/Films Ieva suggested E.P Thompson, Whigs and Hunters: the Origin of the Black Act (1975) for its thoughtful framing of state violence and its incredible detail, and also Sven Lindqvist, A History of Bombing (2000), for the ways in which the book's structure enacts its argument. Earlier this month, Phil and JF recorded a live episode at Indiana University Cinema in Bloomington following a screening of John Carpenter's film In the Mouth of Madness. Carpenter's cult classic obliterates the boundary between reality and fiction, madness and revelation—an ideal subject for a Weird Studies conversation. In this episode, recorded before a live audience, the hosts explore the film's Lovecraftian themes, the porous nature of storytelling, and how art can function as a conduit to unsettling truths. Purchase 'Biopolitics as a System of Thought' from Bloomsbury: https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/biopolitics-as-a-system-of-thought-9781350412095/Our contemporary mode of life is characterised by what Serene Richards in Biopolitics as a System of Thought calls: Smart Being. Smart Being believes in the solutions of techno-capital where living is always at stake and directed to survival. Armed with this concept, this book examines how we arrived at this mode of being and asks how it could be that, while the material conditions of our lives have increasingly worsened, our capacities for effective political action, understood as the capacity for transforming our existing social relations, appear to be diminishing.Drawing from jurists and philosophers such as Pierre Legendre, Yan Thomas, Giorgio Agamben, Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, Richards argues that biopolitics intervenes at the most minute level of our everyday lives. She argues that there are conceptual truths presupposed in the mode of biopolitics' functioning, for instance that life can be assigned a value for the purpose of intervention, abandonment, or death, which have implications for our politics. In exciting engagements with political movements such as the post-May 1968 Mouvement des travailleurs Arabes (MTA), Richards shows how demands to transform our system of social relations are undermined by institutional models that proffer to offer rights protection while simultaneously annihilating the living altogether. Through a reappraisal of law, governance and capital, Richards seeks to reconceptualise our collectivity of thought, arguing for a politics of destitution that could form the basis of a communism to come.Support the Show.Support the podcast:https://www.acidhorizonpodcast.com/Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastZer0 Books and Repeater Media Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comOrder 'Anti-Oculus: A Philosophy of Escape': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/anti-oculus-a-philosophy-of-escape/Order 'The Philosopher's Tarot': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhiHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comRevolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/

What is a creative act? In other words, what is the nature of the forces which bring 'the new' into the world? Also, what is the role of resistance and the potential not to act against notions of creativity? In this episode, Craig, Will, and Adam perform a close reading of Gilles Deleuze's "What is a Creative Act?" and Giorgio Agamben's response, "What is an Act of Creation?", examining the respective nuances in the philosophers' views of creativity.Support the Show.Support the podcast:https://www.acidhorizonpodcast.com/Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastZer0 Books and Repeater Media Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comOrder 'Anti-Oculus: A Philosophy of Escape': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/anti-oculus-a-philosophy-of-escape/Order 'The Philosopher's Tarot': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhiHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comRevolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/

1. In his sermon, Cole taught about Giorgio Agamben's understanding of sacredness. He described it, in part, as something that can make us recoil in uneasiness because of its set-apartness. He gave the example of pastors telling people at parties what they do for work - only to have people respond with less than enthusiastic interest. What is conjured up in your mind as you consider this understanding of sacredness? Does it ring true for you in some ways? Or not as much? What examples can you identify in the world in which you operate?2. Even if we haven't experienced it ourselves, most of us know stories of people who've gone from lives with some measure of status, access, prominence, and reputation to lives where subsistence is the primary hallmark. What thoughts & feelings come to mind when you contemplate this type of personal story? What types of futures do you envision for people with that type of reversal of fortune in their lives? What unconscious assumptions or ideas might be lurking around the edges of your mind as you consider?(2b) Now zoom out to consider cultures, subcultures, and people groups that have, through long (or short) arcs of history moved collectively from places of rights and privilege to positions in which they're seen more as things than people by those with power. What examples come to mind? How similar or dissimilar are your internal responses when considering people groups rather than individuals? What observations might you make about how these two different types of examples can impact our perceptions of and expectations for these people? What else do you notice?3. Toward the close of his sermon, Cole talked about his wish that we can continue to form Redemption Church into a place to which others turn when seeking refuge. When & how have you experienced RC as a place of refuge - for yourself and/or for others? If RC as a place of refuge doesn't resonate for you, what would it look like for a church to be a place that feels like refuge from your personal vantage point? How prominent is this idea in your own conception of RC and/or churches in general? Why do you think that is? In what ways do you see yourself as a part of creating safety and refuge in the Redemption community? To what degree does that translate to other spaces in your life? Why do you think that is?

Sean Hannan offers a new interpretation of Augustine of Hippo's approach to temporality by contrasting it with contemporary accounts of time drawn from philosophy, political theology, and popular science. Hannan argues that, rather than offering us a deceptively simple roadmap forward, Augustine asks us to face up to the question of time itself before we take on tasks like transforming ourselves and our world. Augustine discovered that the disorientation we feel in the face of change is a symptom of a deeper problem: namely, that we cannot truly comprehend time, even while it conditions every facet of our lives. On Time, Change, History, and Conversion (Bloomsbury, 2020) puts Augustine into creative conversation with contemporary thinkers, from Pierre Hadot and Giorgio Agamben to Steven Pinker and Stephen Hawking, on questions such as the definition of time, the metaphysics of transformation, and the shape of history. The goal is to learn what Augustine can teach us about the nature of temporality and the possibility of change in this temporal world of ours. Learn more about your ad choices.
