Here is a link to a flyer with the entire schedule.  Please do share with your family and friends. We begin the summer with the brief but seminal encyclical by Pope St. Paul VI, Of Human Life (Humanae Vitae).  Promulgated in July 1968, the work has proven to be prophetic in so many realms as to modernity's assault on the family and the true nature of sexuality.  We will discuss why the work shook the Church and the world  and explore the amazing “why” behind the most ignored and vilified, yet central Catholic Church teaching for our time. We will also consider keynotes of Pope St. John Paul II's follow-up to Humanae Vitae in his lifelong reflection called “The Theology of the Body.”We are blessed to have an amazing guest presenter to kick-off our summer series.  Sr. Helena Raphael Burns, fsp is a member of the Daughters of St. Paul, an international congregation of Roman Catholic Sisters founded to communicate God's Word through the media. Special guest: Diana Graber. Snapchat, Instagram, Fortnite, cyberbullying, sexting, and technology addiction are some of the digital concerns that keep today's parents up at night. Some of the statistics being quoted are scary: Common Sense Media reported that 50 percent of teens feel “addicted” to their phones. The Pew Research Center reported just last year that 59 percent of U.S teens have been bullied or harassed online. Guard Child reported that 39 percent of teens have sent or posted sexually suggestive messages (sexting). Stanford University researchers tell us that a whopping 80 percent of students can't differentiate between real and “fake” news. And the World Health Organization told us in 2017 that Technology is making children dangerously unhealthy. YIKES. These are not small-scale studies with questionable results. My next guest has been unpacking this research and working to understand how digital innovations have radically altered childhood and left us largely unprepared as parents for how to deal with the influx of technology and the fallout from these devices. She is also capturing the upside of these digital innovations that, yes, if used correctly, can enrich our children's lives—and regardless, this IS the world we live in- we can not shut our eyes turn off all screens and say “that's it!” without shutting out the digital world in which we must learn to survive and thrive. So what can we do? Diana Graber, a digital literacy educator and advocate, was honored with the National Association for Media Literacy Education's 2017 Media Literacy Teacher Award. She is the cofounder of Cyberwise, a leading online safety and digital literacy organization, and the founder and creator of Cyber Civics, the popular and innovative middle school digital citizenship and literacy program currently being taught in more than 40 US states, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Africa. AD Navy Public Affairs Officer, Navy Spouse, and San Diego State University Graduate Student Kara Handley shares her knowledge and experiences with media literacy, and why education in this space is so important for children, service members, and their families especially with the social dilemma that most of us are experiencing. Episode Highlights: 05:12- What is media literacy education and its importance 11:18 - Resources available to parents to get media literacy education 14:40 -Why did it take so long for us to finally start with media literacy education? 20:51 - The immediate call to actions for our military families 30:19 - Common mistakes that people do without a critical understanding of media literacy Key Points: Media literacy is the ability to access and analyze media messages to drill down and know what the intent is.  The biggest suggestion to tackle the social dilemma that we are facing is to educate children and adults with media literacy.  Do not rely on your social media feed to be your main form of news consumption. In 1971, Dr. Phillip Zimbardo gathered a group of undergraduate students and convinced them that they were not allowed to leave the basement of the Stanford Psychology Department. Half of the group played the role of guards, while the other half became prisoners for what was supposed to be a 14-day experiment.  What followed was six days of legitimized abuse, and fifty years of legitimized research, all based on a misrepresentation of motives. In this episode I talk about what happened in that study, and what it means about our human tendency to blame our bad behavior on others.

Have you ever felt like the news and TV programs are reinforcing racist stereotypes? Have you ever seen a drug dealer or a thief on television and known they were a bad guy before they did anything illegal? Dr. Travis Dixon's work reveals the statistical cause of that feeling. The news, television and movies are indeed misrepresenting the facts about crime and criminal justice, showing us far more images of criminality which align with our preconceived notions of what a criminal looks like, and in the process, reinforcing stereotypes about people of color, men, and black folks. The end result is that people who watch more news tend to be more afraid that a crime will occur, more convinced that the perpetrator will be a non-white person, and less likely to feel that the offender is capable of redemption. The media are indeed "Teaching us to Love Fear."

Dr. Mia Fischer joins me to talk about systems of power, and the way that they refuse to change, even when they appear to do so. Our military has recently incorporated, then unincorporated, then reincorporated openly-trans folks. Our prisons often house incarcerated people in the wrong facilities based on their assigned birth gender. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Any good hegemonic system will begin with this foundation. Unless we work towards systemic change, the small battles we win will accomplish little within the bigger systems of control. When marijuana is legalized, drug enforcement units target shrooms. When shrooms are decriminalized, drug enforcement units target other illegal drugs. And when all drugs are decriminalized, officers target sex workers, or other petty "crimes" which we would do better to legalize and regulate.

This hour, we talk with a reporter behind the investigation, and find out whether you can file your taxes for free. Read ProPublica's guide to filing your state and federal taxes for free. Get filing help from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) in Connecticut by calling 211. And today is Super Tuesday, when voters in 14 states head to the polls to cast their presidential primary ballots. After disinformation campaigns and fake news marred the 2016 presidential election, how can Americans figure out what is real information and what is fake? Watch the Connecticut Public Documentary Fake: Searching for Truth in the Age of Misinformation. GUESTS: Justin Elliott - Reporter for ProPublica. Graber lives with her family in Southern California. Diana is also the author of Raising Humans in a Digital World, published in January of this year.
