Happy Pride. That's what today's guest said over the pounding beat of his DJing life for many years. The thrill, the fun, the drugs, the sex. It all made him feel desired and alive...so to speak, until it didn't. Then he woke to the truth that to be desired and loved, he had to do that to and for himself. Dr. Wade Maggert, brings his Buddhist sensibilities and practical awakened self to this candid conversation about his life, then and now, and shares how during this Pride Season, you can find yourself when you simply look within. “I was there for 10 minutes, and already I felt calmer.” And in that moment, I was reminded once again how Shabbat is a practice that when regularly “practiced,” sensitizes us to shabbats that arise when we are least expecting them. And that is a central element for what it means to live Jewishly. Yesterday, Ann Friedman and I visited the Auspicious Cloud Retreat Center in Chappell Hill, just an hour outside of Houston. Formerly the Margaret Austin Center, and now owned by the Houston Zen Center, this retreat center is where CSK's first Shabbat retreat will take place, this coming March 17-19.

Gaelyn Godwin, Abbot and Abiding Teacher of the Houston Zen Center and Director of the Soto Zen Buddhism International Center discusses the Four Noble Truths. At San Antonio Zen Center on May, 4th, 2019.
Happy Day, Friends! On today's episode, I dive into a wee bit of yoga philosophy from the Yoga Sutras, looking at attachment (raga) and non-attachment (vairagya). I've been reflecting a lot about attachment lately because of the tea cup story I share in this episode (and on the episode with Gaelyn Godwin, Abbot of the Houston Zen Center). I thought you may find it valuable to understand that when we are attached to people, experiences, and objects we tend to feel a push-pull cycle of pleasure and pain, happy and unhappy. This cycle is a tough place to be and creates so much craziness in our life! With mindfulness practices we can cultivate the art of freedom from attachment, meaning we are free from ego-driven personal desires for personal gain, which leads us away from that crazy push-pull cycle of pleasure and pain. Thank goodness! We can also choose to shift that motive of personal desires for personal gain to a motive of personal desires to serve others that's driven by something beyond ourselves. This way of being helps us cultivate and maintain a state of contentment and equanimity. Awe, let's breathe that one in a few times. I give you two tools to use to cultivate non-attachment. Enjoy the freedom and joy they can bring to your day, relationships, and life. Keep breathing deep and shining bright, Friend! XO ~ Athea PS. Gaelyn Godwin Roshi, Zen Buddhist Tradition Wednesday, April 4, 2018 For the month of April, the Rothko Chapel presented a meditation in the Zen Buddhist tradition on the 50th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination. Led by Gaelyn Godwin Roshi of Houston Zen Center, this session explored the practice of allowing ourselves to be fully present with the moment and will lift up MLK’s profound impact on equity, peace and justice. We enter Zen practice with awareness of our sensations, our breath, the sounds, the feeling of being a living body. In this simple yet profound meditation practice, the act of just sitting in the present moment can lead us to a sense of ease and release. Zen can be practiced by people of all faiths. It was originally taught by the Buddha as the method to live in awakening. At 1:00pm, after the meditation, we had a moment of silence followed by an audio installation of MLK’s final speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” played inside the Chapel and outside on the plaza.
