True Crime Tuesday presents: Body Parts: A Serial Killer's Deadly Compulsions with Journalist/Author, Caitlin Rother! When Wayne Adam Ford walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office in November 1998 with a woman's body part in his jacket pocket, the 36-year-old truck driver wasn't a suspect in any crime. After a lengthy investigation spanning four California counties and a sensational trial, he was convicted of the torture and murder of four women. His first victim, whom he dismembered, would remain unidentified for 25 years. While serving honorably in the Marine Corps, Ford had learned life-saving techniques that gave him structure and purpose. But a severe head injury worsened pre-existing emotional problems, rendering him unable to suppress his dark sexual impulses. Knowing he would kill again, he enlisted his brother's help to turn himself in. Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother drew on previously sealed testimony and interviewed key players in the case, including Ford's brother and father, to write this intimate and psychologically resonant narrative. Extensively updated with the inside details of how Ford's first victim was recently identified through DNA testing and forensic genealogy, this classic true crime story continues to haunt us On today's TCT, Caitlin Rother joins the show to talk about the unusual way they found out the identity of "Torso Girl", Wayne Adam Ford's first victim! We also talk about the unusual relationship between Ford, his brother, Rodney and his father, Gene, and how it had changed over the years. We also delve into the strange dichotomy between Ford and his mother and ask the question, was it genetics, or the way Ford's mother treated/raised Ford, that drove him over the edge and warped his view of women!   Get your copy of "Body Parts:..." here:  https://bit.ly/43d3SDA Check out Caitlin Rother here:  https://www.caitlinrother.com/ PLUS AN ALL-NEW DUMB CRIMES/STUPID CRIMINALS WITH WAYNE D! The bestselling author delves into the twisted crimes of Wayne Adam Ford.“This kind of frightening and fascinating glimpse into a killer's mind is rare.” —Ron Franscell, New York Times–bestselling author On a chilly November afternoon in 1998, a tearful 36-year-old man walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department in Eureka, California, and confessed to something horrible. “I hurt some people,” he said. Inside his pocket was the ghastly proof of his statement. But there was more to Wayne Adam Ford than the trail of mangled victims he left behind. More, even, than the twisted predator inside, which drove him to increasingly perverse sexual appetites. Pulitzer Prize–nominated author Caitlin Rother draws on previously sealed testimony, interviews with the key players in the case, and the killer's shocking confession to explore the demons that drove a damaged man to his unspeakable crimes. Her book is a harrowing psychological portrait and a haunting, unforgettable true-life thriller. Includes dramatic photos “Page-turning excitement and blood-curdling terror . . . Riveting, fast-paced, and sure to keep you up at night.” —M. William Phelps, New York Times–bestselling author “Shocking, chilling, fast-paced . . . A book crime aficionados will be loath to put down.” —Simon Read, author of The Iron Sea “Rother has produced a superior study of a serial killer and his lost and lonely victims.” —Carol Anne Davis, author of Couples Who Kill “A must-read . . . In part two of my discussion with Kristen Seavy from the Murder She Told Podcast we talk the disappearance and eventual discovery of the remains of her childhood friend Danielle Bertolini, as well as the Humboldt Five. Detailed description below. Description of original episode on Murder She Told: My childhood friend's disappearanceThe story that I have for you this week is the story of my childhood friend, Danielle Bertolini. She and I grew up together in my small hometown of Newport, Maine (population 3,200). We were friends and classmates in elementary and junior high, and I fondly remember her unapologetic and spunky personality. At 23 years old, in 2014, she went missing in Fortuna, California in Humboldt County.Today, she is known as one of the Humboldt County Missing Five. Danielle's mother's heartrending interviewFor years I followed her case on Facebook through the family's updates, seeing and sharing their pain. This is a story that's been in my heart for a long time, but I just didn't know how to tell right. But when I reached out to Danielle's mother, to talk to me, on the record, about her daughter's tragic disappearance and death, she agreed. We sat down at my dining room table, and we had a surprisingly intimate and tough conversation about Danielle's life, and her death. The majesty of the redwoods and the darkness that lurks withinDanielle moved across the country to a beautiful area called Humboldt county, home of some of the tallest trees in the world, the giant redwoods. The beauty of the trees is juxtaposed by the ugliness of the crime and the proliferation of drugs in the area.Alder Point, California, a small town in Humboldt County, is flanked by a famous peak dubbed “Murder Mountain” where many have gone missing and many have died. Murder Mountain initially got it's nickname after serial killer couple Michael Bear Carson and Suzan Carson hid out there after murdering 26-year-old Clark Stephens in 1982, seeking refuge in the trees while police tried to nab the perpetrator of their crimes. But it stuck because of the sheer number of people who disappear and are found murdered in Humboldt County.Drugs, lies, murder, and a search for justiceDanielle's life was transformed by the loss of her son Xavier. She left behind her life in Maine, where she had constant reminders of her trauma, and went to find a fresh start in California amidst the redwoods. But California wasn't the answer she was looking for, and Danielle fell into the wrong crowd and was using heavily. Before her disappearance, she trapped and trying to find a way out.One year later, a human skull is found washed up on the bank of the Eel River, and is ultimately identified as Danielle's.Join the fight! A petition to prioritize this caseI have started a petition on change.org to dial up the pressure on this case. Danielle isn't the only person to go missing under the same circumstances. There is a person of interest and there is evidence. Justice is so close. Help the family get the closure that they deserve.SIGN THE PETITIONhttps://www.change.org/p/humboldt-county-district-attorney-justice-for-danielle-bertolini-and-sheila-franks?utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=custom_url&recruited_by_id=5b2baae0-2626-11e6-b7a5-3be3a030e21aA very special thanks to Billie Jo Dick for sharing her daughter's life story and memories with me.If you're holding onto any information or think you might know something about the murders of Danielle Bertolini and Sheila Franks, I urge you to submit a tip to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Anonymous Tip Line at (707) 268-2539.Connect on Instagram (@MurderSheToldPodcast) for photos from this episode and more.Murder She Told Danielle Bertolini Pt One: https://www.murdershetold.com/episodes/danielle-bertoliniDanielle Bertolini Part Two ft. From there she met new friends, self proclaimed spiritual environmental activists living off the grid. Christine followed her new friends to Arcata California, a small old logging town just outside Eureka CA. It is unclear what happened to her while she was there. Some say she was working at a marijuana grow farm and was owed money, others say she had taken part in a so-called 'tea ceremony' and ingested hallucinogens which led to a bad trip.On November 12, 2008, then 23-year-old college junior Christine Lindsey Walters was found naked, confused, frightened and bleeding, covered in scratches. She was on a stranger's doorstep and claiming someone was after her.Police took her to the hospital. The next day Christine called her mother in Wisconsin who faxed over a copy of her identification so that she could board an airplane home. After picking up her I.D. she was never seen again.Christine Walters would now be 35. At the time of her disappearance she was described as 5'2", 100-115 pounds, caucasian with strawberry blonde hair. Her ears and nose are pierced and she has a black butterfly tattoo on her hip and a green and purple iris flower tattoo on the back of her neck.If you have any information in the case please call the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office at 707-445-7251Podcast WEBSITE (Case Photos and video)http://www.truecrimedeadline.comPodcast SOCIAL MEDIA:https://twitter.com/CrimeDeadlinehttps://www.instagram.com/truecrimedeadline/https://www.facebook.com/TrueCrimeDEADLINE/http://www.youtube.com/c/TrueCrimeDEADLINEFB Group:https://www.facebook.com/HelpFindChristineLindseyWalters/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/posts/true-crime-lets-26942079?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=postshare)
