**Listener Request**In 1972, 20-year-old Jeannette Kamahele disappeared while hitchhiking near the Cotati onramp of Highway 101 in Santa Rosa, California. Last seen getting into a faded brown pickup truck, she was never heard from again. Though often linked to the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders, Jeannette's case stands apart as she is the only presumed victim never found. This episode is part of our Lost Coast series, highlighting MMIP cases across Northern California. These are the places where Indigenous women have gone missing, and where silence has often followed. Today, we focus on Jeannette, not just what was taken from her, but what justice still demands.Sources:https://oag.ca.gov/missing/person/jeanette-kamahele-0https://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/news/santa-rosa-hitchhiker-murders/https://www.santarosahitchhikermurders.com/articles.phphttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Rosa_hitchhiker_murdershttps://charleyproject.org/case/jeannette-kamaheleSupport the show

Some artists can always be counted on to channel a sense of place. For violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman, it’s the homeward pull of Northern California’s so-called Lost Coast, between the redwood sprawl of Humboldt County and the rugged terrain that meets the Pacific. Scheinman grew up there, and she carries its rustic charm and mystique in her music — even when it assumes a form as elegant as the songs on All Species Parade, her recent double album. In this live episode, she converses with Josh Jackson before a recent performance with her band at Solar Myth, part of Ars Nova Workshop’s 25th anniversary season. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with acclaimed violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman. Scheinman has produced several critically acclaimed solo albums, including 12 Songs, named one of the Top Ten Albums of 2005 by The New York Times. She has played with Norah Jones, Nels Cline, Lou Reed, Ani Difranco, Aretha Franklin, Lucinda Williams, Bono, Bill Frisell, and Allison Miller. For years, Scheinman nursed the idea of a musical homage to Humboldt, in particular the area known as the Lost Coast, a remote, earthquake and mudslide-prone region of coastal northern California, where she was raised. She considered the project from many angles. That idea has come to fruition in the form of her latest album entitled All Species Parade, the focus of this episode. All Species Parade is an epic and sprawling double album with an A-list ensemble, featuring guitarists Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Nels Cline, pianist Carmen Staaf, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Though the album does evoke a sense of pastoral wonder, it also strives to capture in Jenny's words, “a charged relationship to nature, a feeling of being part of something bigger than ourselves, powerful, and fragile, and constantly changing. Something alive. With All Species Parade, I set out to musically reflect that experience of awe.” In this episode host Michael Shields and Jenny Scheinman discuss how nature, and a personal musical challenge of Jenny's regarding song length and breadth, inspired the soundscapes found on All Species Parade. They talk about the outstanding grouping of players on the album, how Jenny paid tribute to the Wiyot Tribe with the song “Jaroujiji,” what the true meaning of the song “Shutdown Stomp” actually is, and so much more. It just seems so absurd to me. Chance is everything. I'm constantly levelled by how little control I have when I'm working. I feel insignificant and almost powerless a lot of the time.”

This was recorded on a windy evening just before sunset at Mattole Beach on the Lost Coast in Humboldt County, California. The surf was rough due to the strong wind which produced a wind swell and created choppy seas speckled with white caps beyond the surf line. This is another recording I made during my one night stay at the Mattole Campground on the Lost Coast. The Lost Coast is the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in California, or any of the lower 48 states. The Mattole Campground sits at the northern trailhead of the Lost Coast Trail, which I very much hope to hike someday, and make recordings along the way. This episode is dedicated to my very good friend Orion Gardner, who tragically passed away recently. He was a lifelong surfer and lover of the ocean, and I know he would have absolutely loved this stunning stretch of coastline. He was also one of the earliest supporters of the podcast, whose kind words helped motivate me to continue making these recordings and continue sharing them with you. This was recorded on a windy morning beside the Mattole River Estuary at Mattole Beach, Humboldt County, California. The roaring surf is heard in the background as small wind waves lap at the shore of the estuary. I was fortunate to make a quick trip out to the Lost Coast and camped for one night at Mattole Campground on Mattole Beach near the mouth of the Mattole River. It was very windy for the short time I was there, but nevertheless I was lucky to make a few recordings. This recording was made with the help of a driftwood hut someone had built on the beach beside the estuary, which provided good shelter from the strong, gusty wind. What is the Lost Coast Trail? Today we sit down to discuss a short but sweet trail... and promptly go off the rails! Hosts Constantine and Magpie begin the show with an introduction to the stats of the Lost Coast Trail. A trail that spans 25.3~ miles along the King's Coast in Northern California, it covers surf, sand, mountains and bluffs...and that is just the terrain. It has sweeping views, tidal zones that must be traversed safely, wildlife swimming in the waves and tanning in the sand. All the joys of a long thru-hike can be found within its comfortable distance. After going over the access to the trailhead and the permitting process for the trail the conversation begins to take a turn. A turn for the better, or for the worse? Who is to say... what we can say however is that it indeed takes a sharp left, right, circular, perpendicular, pentagonal turn towards both our hosts internal mid-life crisis'. In what form do people in their late twenties have mid-life crisis, and what does that look like? Well, you are going to have to listen to find out, but we will tell you it involves backpacking "vs." thru-hiking, bandwidths of suffering, broken knees and lower backs, and more than a fair share of "Xyience"! Traversing back off an emotional tangent, our hosts begin discussing the intricacies of the trail. The play-by-play of miles, the tidal zones and where they are located, the flavor of the miles, camping locations, water sources, wildlife, weather patterns, travel to and from both terminus, amount of hikers and everything you need to know to hike and access the Lost Coast Trail. We chat why Xyience is indeed better than science and how one could even argue one created the other, a real chicken and egg scenario. We chat big creeks, cuddly Elephant Seals (Disclaimer: DO NOT cuddle), mindset of hiking and thru-hiking, laundry and chickens, a vending machine that mysteriously dispenses dimes/nickels/ and even a dollar coin?! We chat the definition of pulling a "Classic Constantine", foot issues, rotten spaghetti (yes, literally rotten), and drinking from the fountains of youth we call Xyience (no, not literally but certainly figuratively). We wrap up the show with an impromptu Ramen Rating Review. Cementing the reason why our hosts are together as to their two lowest rated ramen and two highest rated ramen were the same! Those that rate ramen together... well probably are a tad malnourished and nutritionally deficient... but at least suck down salt packets with a grimace on their faces and a smile in their hearts. A very fun, weird, and perfectly unexpected turn of an episode. Seems apt for the flavor of where we are figuratively, literally (no not literally, but yes actually literally) and where we are spiritually, (yes spiritually, akin to those Elephant Seals along the Lost Coast Trail, cuddling, feeding our blubber reserves, and waddling our way forward through this metaphorical deep sand shores of life.) Anyway... great trail, would recommend. FAVORITE QUOTES: "Blubbery, cuddly, kissable, bundles of joy" "Tastes like salty memories of soup" "Depends how you define a Big Creek" To learn more about who we are click the link below: ElevenSkys.com

Dani is driving down an open road and Doug is bidding adieu to the real Winter. It's the final week of our four part Great American Road Trip. Dani waits out the storms and takes some time in Sequoia National Park. Doug reaches the Redwoods but remembers that there is always more to see which is the true driver of life.
