Whee! It's Friday. Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo homered for the losing Mets last night, and we've already done their home run chains, so how about the guy who then pinch-hit for Baty for… reasons?* Danny Mendick hit his first home run off Jaime Barria, 9/8/19* Jaime Barria gave up his first home run to Ryan Rua, 4/11/18* Ryan Rua hit his first home run off Huston Street, 9/21/14* Huston Street gave up his first home run to Paul Konerko, 7/10/05* Paul Konerko hit his first home run off Bob Wells, 6/6/98* Bob Wells gave up his first home run to J.T. Snow, 5/6/95* J.T. Snow hit his first home run off Bill Wegman, 4/6/93* Bill Wegman gave up his first home run to Jim Rice, 9/14/85* Jim Rice hit his first home run off Steve Kline, 10/1/74* Steve Kline gave up his first home run to Frank Howard, 7/10/70Frank Howard connects to the Daniel Vogelbach home run chain, so both Danny and Daniel track back through baseball history together. Connecting to Frank Howard with the 1970 Senators (managed by Ted Williams), that's nothing. They had Dick Billings, Dick Bosman, Dick Nen, and Dick Such.Unfortunately, despite the passage of time and that baseball team having moved to Texas, Washington remains FULL OF DICKS. Major League all-star closer, Huston Street takes you on a fabulous journey through his life. Huston grew up the son of a Texas sports legend, proudly followed in his father’s footsteps, became Rookie of the Year, and carved out his own successful path. You will enjoy Huston’s self-deprecating candor making his personal stories relatable and endearing. From a self-described “cocky hotshot” out of the University of Texas, to one of baseball’s top 20 all-time saves leaders, Huston’s life is a story well worth hearing.
It's quite an accomplishment for the boys, they survived and reached episode 25.This special episode began with a shoutout to a former Stories Inside the Man Cave guest, Greg Swindell (aka Zeke). The former Texas Longhorn great pitcher and former MLB pitcher, was recently recognized by ESPN as a member of the all-time college baseball team. Zeke was joined another Texas Longhorn great, Huston Street. The boys quickly jumped into it with the Covid19 topic in regards to the negative effects of the virus on college athletic programs and how that affects enrollment and the financial portion of colleges and universities generating revenue. The big debate continues, will there be a college football season? If so, will the entire season not be interrupted by Covid19.How will this affect seniors who are NFL draft eligible if the college football season is delayed until the spring semester or if the season doesn't occur. Segment two includes lengthy and profound interview with perhaps a presidential candidate in 2036.The pride of Hutto Hippo's football program, Chase Griffin. The redshirt freshman quarterback at UCLA has the intellect and leadership traits to change the world. Griffin is currently in significant leadership role with the governor of California.
We missed your face college football. So college football is going to happen. When and how? What are the political dynamics between state and local politicians and the Longhorn sports machine? Then we talk about the Lance Armstrong documentary, Kevin's own parallel battle with testicular cancer as a young man, and how to assess the grey areas of Lance's legacy. Kevin drops some real wisdom when discussing the metaphor of "beating" cancer. Paul also offers the less uplifting and embarrassing circumstances of being a grown man forced to visit his childhood pediatrician for an antibiotic. Finally, Inside Texas writer (and 1-0 Podcast media mogul) Joe Cook wrote a nice feature on Longhorn and MLB closer Huston Street. We discuss Street as a maximizer and an easy guy to pull for. Lance Armstrong is back. Sort of. Armstrong, who admitted to use of performance enhancing drugs and blood doping while winning the Tour de France, has become a podcaster and investor. Despite his being persona-non-grata at professional cycling events, Armstrong’s analysis of the races has become a popular way for fans to augment their thirst for the Tour, as well as a few other races. As that podcast has grown, cold brew brand High Brew Coffee has started to sponsor it; from a product direction standpoint, it makes sense: the company has started to aim for the cycling community as one of its consumer groups. From a relationship standpoint, it makes sense as well; like Armstrong himself, High Brew is a product of Austin, Texas; and Armstrong is even an investor in High Brew as a limited partner in Charles Street Partners, a local investment firm run by former MLB pitcher Huston Street and event promoter Charles Attal. But still, it presents a question for all food and beverage brands: notably, who do you want to work with? What are the kinds of things that a product endorser can and should bring to the brand? Is it just popularity or notoriety? Is there something like a character requirement? And just how long does it take for a tarnished spokesman to rehabilitate his image and get back in the race? As you’ll hear in this interview with Armstrong, he didn’t hold much back when it came to exploring these questions. This episode is sponsored by Symrise Califormulations. Show notes: 3:18: Interview: Lance Armstrong, Founder, WEDŪ -- BevNET editor-in-chief Jeff Klineman spoke with Armstrong at the High Brew Coffee booth at the 2018 National Association of Convenience Stores show. As part of their conversation, the former cycling star spoke about his podcasts, The Forward and The Move, and the audience he’s attempting to reach with each. Armstrong also discussed sponsors of the podcasts, which include Patron and High Brew, and what the support means for their brands. Brands in this episode: Patron, High Brew Coffee
