In a world where so much is driven by profit, Stuart Wills reminds us of the quiet, powerful difference one person can make — without asking for a penny in return. In this heartwarming episode, I visit Stuart at his home to hear how a few unused bikes in a garage became a grassroots movement to support families, children, refugees, and low-income workers. Since founding Bourne Bike Donation and Recycle UK in 2021, Stuart has refurbished and given away nearly 400 bikes — all free of charge.Stuart shares how the project not only brought joy to others but also helped him recover from a deeply challenging period in his life. What shines through is a story of human connection, kindness, and a deep belief that doing good doesn't need to come with a price tag. What You'll Hear:Why Stuart never charges for the bikes he repairs and gives awayHow cycling became a lifeline through his personal challengesStories of local families and workers whose lives were improved through mobilityThe emotional reward of helping others without expecting anything in returnStuart's philosophy: reuse, repair, and give back — no strings attachedWhy recognition (including a Royal garden party invite!) is just a bonus, not the goalHighlights & Quotes:

Retired detective Robert Wells worked a one man station, had a gun stuck in his belly, attended car accidents alone where people were dying - but the case that still haunts him is the murder of John Price. Tháng 8, năm 2014, tạp chí Harper's đăng bài viết của Jessica Bruder – “The End of Retirement – When you can't afford to stop working” (Kết thúc của nghỉ hưu – Khi ta không thể ngừng lao động). Sau đó, sách thắng giải The Banes & Noble Discover Great New Writers và giải thưởng quốc tế Ryszards Kapuściński. Richard Diamond Private Detective "Charles Walsh Bob Wells" (July 9, 1949) Two convicts escape from Sing Sing with plans to kill Richard Diamond. They start by kidnapping Diamond's girlfriend Helen Asher. Diamond's alcoholic friend "Wilbur" is similar to the character "Jocko" heard on, "Pat Novak, For Hire." Charles Walsh and Bob Wells two lifers were planning to bust out of the state penitentiary and head for safety in Cuba. This week on the podcast I speak with Shannon. Shannon headed out on the road after her first home was destroyed in a storm. She bought a cheap van, did a minimal build and set out. She received some assistance along the way, but when her money ran out, she had some medical and van issues, she now finds herself in a precarious situation. She wanted to come on and share her story so that others can learn from her situation. Shannon definitely had some angels come to her rescue along the way. I really appreciate her vulnerability for sharing all that's happened to her. And I also appreciate her outlook—she continues to find the good in all that's happened to her. The first Christmas standard ever introduced by a black singer would go on to become the most performed Christmas song ever. This is the story behind…The Christmas Song. #BehindTheChristmasHits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! The story of how it was written is a famous one. In 1945, Mel Torme and Bob Wells would take turns going over to each other’s houses to write songs. On one smoking hot July day in Toluca Lake, California, Mel went to Bob’s house and found a spiral pad of paper sitting on the piano with four lines scribbled down. “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire – Jack Frost nipping at your nose." Mel asked “what’s this?” And Bob said it was so blistering hot, he tried writing some wintery verse to mentally cool him off. Mel said you haven’t just cooled me off – you’ve written a song here. Mel wrote the melody and helped Bob finish the lyrics…and 45 minutes later, they had a song. They drove over to Van Husen Publishing to share it with the decision makers there, who weren’t impressed. The same afternoon, they drove over to Nat King Cole’s house. They played it and Nat said “play it again.” After the second play, Nat said “that’s now my song.” Mel Torme was a successful singer in his own right, so you’d think he have some regret over not keeping this for himself. Mel’s son James, also a jazz singer, has said that his dad’s solo career hadn’t taken off yet…and that he and Bob recognized that in 1945, Nat King Cole was becoming the man. He was exploding in popularity and to have him sing it would give the song it’s best chance to succeed. Nat King Cole recorded FOUR different versions over the years, starting in June 1946. Cole’s record label, Capital Records, wanted him to stand and sing, but Cole decided to sit and play the piano himself while singing. He wasn’t happy with the way things went, so despite strong objections from his label, Cole went back into the studio to re-record it in August. That version added a small string section and while it was a hit that Christmas, it’s not the version that’s most played now. Cole would record it again in 1953 again adding a full orchestra, but we didn’t get the now iconic version until 1961. Every time Cole would go back to the studio to re-record it, he would add more players and in ’61 that trend continued…but this time, it was recorded in stereo. And according to what Mel Torme wrote in his autobiography, the rest could be called our financial pleasure. If Nat King Cole’s is the most famous, who’s version comes in second? Going by chart performance, that would be Christina Aguilera, who recorded it for her My Kind of Christmas album 20 years ago. Her version peaked at #18 on Billboard’s Hot 100. But there have been so many versions over the years. Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, John Legend, Doris Day, Justin Bieber, James Brown and countless others. So many versions that according to Broadcast Music Inc – a performing rights organization – The Christmas Song is now the most performed Christmas song ever. Thanks for joining us. Joining the program today: Joe Cullen from the Knights of Columbus to talk about the passage of bill HR 390—“The Iraq and Syria Genocide Relief and Accountability Act of 2018”—yesterday. Years in the making, HR 390 makes clear that those targeted for genocide by ISIS should be included in American government assistance in the region. The bill was bipartisan, with its author being Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) and its lead co-sponsor being Anna Eshoo (D-CA). HR 390 passed unanimously in both the House and Senate and should add some muscle towards helping stem the steep decline in Christians living in Iraq (down from 1.4 million in 2002 to less than 250,000 in 2017) and in Syria (down from 1.4 million in 2011 to 450,000 today), in large part by applying funds in the direction of rebuilding homes and communities destroyed by ISIS. Keith Getty also calls in from New York City to share about “Sing! An Irish Christmas” tomorrow night at Carnegie Hall, including special guests Phil Keaggy and Tim Keller (founding pastor of Redeemer Church in NY). Keith and his wife Kristyn are modern hymn-writers whose songs like “In Christ Alone" are sung in thousands of churches around the world. The Christmas song featured (including the backstory for it) on the show today: The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire) by Bob Wells & Mel Tormé in 1945 and made popular via several versions by Nat King Cole, the most-performed Christmas song in history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Richard Diamond, Private Detective came to NBC in 1949. Diamond was a slick, sophisticated detective, with a sharp tongue for folks who needed it. Diamond enjoyed the detective life, but not as much as entertaining his girl, Helen Asher. After each show, he would croon a number to his Park Avenue sweetheart. Mr. Powell, a former song and dance man, was perfect for the role. He added an extra dimension to the 40's hokey private eye drama. Diamond was a rough gumshoe that would often get knocked on the head with a revolver butt or other items. His counterpart on the police force was Lt. Levinson who often accepted Diamond's help reluctantly. Levinson would claim to get stomach trouble whenever Diamond would call him and would take bicarbonate to settle his aching stomach. Although they always seem at odds with each other, Diamond and Levinson were best friends. Shop For Richard Diamond, Private Detective Shows
