This week we're beginning the next segment of our Breakthrough! series: Listening to the Spirit. From the opening verses of Scripture, the Holy Spirit is there bringing life, power, and wisdom. He is the Spirit of Life (Romans 8:2) and the Helper Christ said the Father would send us (John 14:26). How do joy and fear bonds affect our relationship with God?God designed us for joyful attachments—and that includes with HIM!This week we're focusing on how understanding joy and fear bonds can help us both with our biblical interpretations and our personal walks with God. Is your brain running on fear?If your brain isn't running on its preferred fuel—joy, it will default to fear. Last episode we started looking at the relational infrastructure of our brains. This week we're looking at Fear vs. Joy Bonds through the lens of fear-based attachment styles. What's Your Attachment Style (fear edition)? Our friends at Life Model have identified three core types of fear bonds: Dismissive Attachment Distracted Attachment Disorganized AttachmentIf you want to go deeper on each style, check out Maribeth Poole's blog posts at DeeperWalk.com/blog. And we won't leave you hanging in the fear talk. If your brain is defaulting to fear, there's a fix for that, and we'll walk you through that too. God designed the infrastructure of our brains to run on relational joy. What does this mean for our daily life?In our first series of 2025, we're diving back into the B.U.I.L.D. Maturity Model from Breakthrough! and covering the important emotional engine of Increase Your Joy Bonds. If our brains run on relational joy, it's probably a good idea to know more about our relational attachments, our joy bonds. Your true self is the person God designed to live on the fuel of relational joy. We've got strategies to keep in mind for remaining relational and living with joy, we're going to pray for you, and there may be a surprise Santa Hat appearance.
What does it look like to be me when the holidays are difficult? This two-part holiday series strategizes how to "act like myself" during the press and potential triggers of the holiday season. In part one, we're specifically addressing two common reasons for why this can be difficult and making some plans for how to remain ourselves despite relational pain or pecking order issues. Does it ever feel like you have a powder keg inside you? Hit the wrong button, and negative emotions erupt inside. Or perhaps you've seen this in a loved one and find yourself in a "button dance" to avoid pressing each other's buttons. In this episode, we're looking at the relationship between beliefs and wounds. When our hearts are wounded, it's easy to believe lies that take root and shape our values and behaviors. Oftentimes those wounds aren't pervasive but are like pockets of pain that can be ignited like powder kegs in our heart. No matter the size of the wound or the frequency of the trigger, we want to identify and uproot those false beliefs and replace them with God's truth in order to find breakthrough. If you're following along in the book, check out chapter seven in Breakthrough!.
My true identity is who I am in relationship to God. God is the definer of my identity. Because of this, any hole in my sense of identity is also a hole in my view of God, and any hole in my view of God is going to affect how I see myself. When we need a breakthrough in the area of beliefs, it's probably related to a lie we're believing. So, this week, we're also looking at two kinds of deception: bold lies and hiding elements of truth. Sometimes deception is an outright lie that needs to be identified and replaced. Sometimes we believe lies because we know some facts but not others. If you're following along in the book, check out chapter seven in Breakthrough!.
Our emotions can't tell the difference between a truth and a lie. Many breakthrough strategies have to deal with beliefs at one level or another. For the next three episodes, we'll be looking at this engine of the Breakthrough Model. This week is all about the power of beliefs to drive our emotions and behavior. Sometimes we can't even picture what doing something looks like, and that keeps us stuck from moving forward. Sometimes our thought life is plagued by negative thinking, and that keeps us stuck. How we think and what we believe shapes how we interact with others in many ways. If you're following along in the book, check out chapter seven in Breakthrough!. Join us on the trail!
Part of being aware of our body is knowing how to quiet. We quiet our minds by replacing toxic thinking with good thinking. We quiet our bodies by changing our body chemistry and calming our amygdala. In this week's episode, we're looking at four practices that can help us quiet our body when we feel stressed. We can remember these as B.E.S.T. practices for quieting: Breathe in a box [inhale, hold, exhale, hold - repeat]. Exaggerate emotions. Soothe the senses. Tense your muscles, and then relax them. If you're following along in the book, check out chapter six in Breakthrough!. Join us on the trail! P.S. Most of you are still joining via audio-only (which is great!). But this could be a fun one to watch on YouTube, as we'll be making many funny facial expressions.
How can the BODY affect our breakthrough journey? In this series, we are exploring five areas where we often need a breakthrough. The first of these five engines that drive our emotions is the body. This engine functions like a two-way street. Sometimes emotions affect our body. Sometimes our body affects our emotions. If we have a physical issue, we probably need a physical solution. Maybe this involves diet and exercise, maybe medication, maybe surgery, and more. In today's episode, we begin our look at Engine One and the importance of being aware of our body. Join us on the trail! P.S. If you're following along in the book, check out chapter six in Breakthrough!.
How can the brain affect our breakthrough journey? To continue this Breakthrough! series, we're talking about our God-given identity and maturity development by looking at three keys of brain function and five levels of maturity. For instance, the brain craves the fuel of ____. (If you filled in the blank with “JOY,” you may have listened to our series on joy. If not, check out this compilation of that series.) How do the brain's need for joy, its right-to-left functionality, and the four levels of the joy elevator shape us? We're also looking at the five levels of maturity as named by our friends at Life Model Works. How do we recognize an emotional infant, child, adult, parent, and elder? And is there hope for gaps and holes? Join us on the trail! P.S. If you're interested in a breakthrough rubric that walks through these five levels, check out chapter five in the book Breakthrough!.
In this episode, we are introducing the core paradigms of the Breakthrough! series: Three Levels of Breakthrough and Five Engines that Drive Our Emotions. When people are in search of a breakthrough, it's usually at one of three levels of need, and each need has its own solution:LEVEL 1: Relieve pain by focusing on symptoms. LEVEL 2: Repair damage by focusing on root issues. LEVEL 3: Rebuild maturity by focusing on new habits.Once we have this framework, it is crucial to realize that the breakthrough we need might be in a different area than where we're looking. We outline a rubric of these five engines that drive our emotions (three physical, two spiritual):ENGINE 1: Be aware of your body.ENGINE 2: Unleash your beliefs. ENGINE 3: Increase your joy bonds.ENGINE 4: Listen to the Spirit. ENGINE 5: Defeat demons. This is a key episode for building the framework for the rest of the series. Join us on the trail!
And we're back! Sabbatical is over, we are together again in a new studio, and we're celebrating our 100th new episode with a new season! (Can you sense a theme here?) Season Three is kicking off with a series all about Breakthrough! In this episode, we're looking at growth models. Growth models are crucial because they determine which solutions we believe are essential to transformation. What are some of the common ones we turn to, and what is the growth model that will truly increase our breakthroughs and grow us into the people God designed and calls us to be? Join us on the trail!
Has your life ever felt chaotic and empty? From Genesis 1 onward, God has shown us His purposes for bringing order and fullness to our lives. In this compilation, we're revisiting the Advent & Incarnation series. (Stephanie says it's never the wrong time of year to celebrate the incarnation of Jesus Christ.) But more than the Christmas season, we're looking at God's heart and plans for the redemption story He's telling, our ability to approach God boldly because of Jesus our High Priest, the conversational relationship He desires to have with us, and how to recognize His invitation to share joy with Him. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 75-78. Join us on the trail! P.S. A couple quick fact checks for this series from Stephanie: Dad gave a casual etymology of the word incarnation. I'm not going to flesh out a whole etymology for you here (ha, pun intended?), but if you're interested… He said carne was the Latin for “flesh,” and we didn't make it clear that “carne” is the Spanish derivative of the Latin root. So, to keep it simple – in Latin, caro and carnis are the words for “flesh.” (Coincidentally, the ablative singular of both of these words is carne, but there you have it…) We had joy on the brain. Dad said the final Advent candle is always Joy in every tradition, but then corrected and said it is the Christ candle (which is what I had in mind as “final” - the central candle. But we skipped over the 4th “final”). From what I understand, Joy is usually the third candle, but the themes can vary depending on tradition.
We are a people who believe God defines reality. In this compilation series, we contrast the occult with the Kingdom, specifically regarding the involvement of spirits in the world and the roles of power and authority.Power can be defined as the ability to make things happen.Authority can be defined as the right to represent power. At the start we look at the nature of the occult, ways it's being normalized, and how to think about it both critically and relationally so that we develop discernment rather than legalism. And then we dig into a legal understanding of spiritual warfare and practical applications of our authority in Christ. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 71-74.
"We are a people who..." ...love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44) ...find rest in Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30) ...practice Gospel habits and abide in God's peace (Philippians 4:9) In Part 4 of the Identity Series, we wrap up this compiled topic with the role of Community in our identity formation and a review of our Gospel Identity. How does community bring the two sides of the brain together? How can we resist mistaking our malfunctions for our identity? Community is key to answer the question, "Who am I, and how is it like me to be?" One of the devil's core strategies is to take us out of the battle by lying to us about our true identity so we live as less than we are. Our Gospel Identity is not just a ticket to Heaven, but it is also the foundation of discipleship. As we wrap up the Identity series, we're reviewing how all this fits together in the heart-focused discipleship model F.I.S.H. +M. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 69-70.
Who does God say you are? We spent last week calling out the devil's lies and strategies for warping our self-perception. Like tearing down our fear house and building a joy house, let us tear down our Kosmos identity and live from our Kingdom identity. (If you missed "Joy vs. Fear House," find it here.) In Part 3 of the Identity Series, we unpack four keys to understanding our New Covenant identity in Christ. In Christ, we are Pardoned by God, Adopted by God, made a Citizen of the Kingdom of God, and given a new Title: Saint. How do these truths about our identity affect our lives when we truly believe them? This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 65-68.
Two realms want to define your identity: the Kingdom & the Kosmos. The Kingdom teaches us how to see reality, God, and ourselves as God sees. The Kosmos teaches us via the world, the flesh, and the devil working together to give us an identity and affect what we believe. In Part 2 of the Identity Series, we unpack how the enemy uses the world and the flesh together to trap us in pecking order systems and comparison games. Using wounds and lies, the enemy wants to shape our beliefs about ourselves and about God to warp our self-perception. We'll also spend a little time setting up the Kingdom identity that God has for us and then will dig into that New Covenant identity more in Part 3 next week. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 61-64.
God designed us to know ourselves based on relational identity.Over the next couple weeks, we'll be reviewing identity formation from the angles of brain science, Scripture, spiritual warfare, and community. Our brains work from right to left, from attachment to beliefs. So it makes sense we follow that pattern. This week's compilation reviews how attachment affects our identity. We're looking at personal identity formation from brain science and from biblical realities. Why does identity matter? How did God design us to form our identity? What does the Bible teach us about our identity? What can we do to overcome the obstacles and repair holes that keep us from living out of our true identity? We'll cover these questions and more over the next couple weeks. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 58-60. Join us on the trail!
Is your joy elevator stuck? Do you ever find yourself rummaging in the kitchen for something, but you don't know what?Has someone ever given you good advice, but the emotional weight you are feeling won't go away? These are just two mild indicators that your joy elevator might be stuck in some pain that needs to be processed. In order for suffering to keep from becoming traumatic, our brains need to process the pain at all five levels of the pain processing pathway: attachment assessment attunement actionnarrativeWhen the joy elevator in our brain gets stuck and our pain isn't able to process through its needed path, it is helpful to recognize at which floor of the brain the elevator jammed. In this series, we unpack the joy elevator and the pain processing pathway. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 53-56. P.S. The "pain processing pathway" is a concept you can learn more about in Dr. Karl Lehman's book Outsmarting Yourself.
This series explores the transformative nature of JOY. Our brains are designed to run on the fuel of joy, but they can default to fear. In their book The 4 Habits of Joy-Filled People, Marcus Warner and Chris Coursey talk about building an internal joy house.Part of building a joy house is tearing down the fear house that so many of us have built up throughout our lives. Fear and joy bonds are not an all-or-nothing experience but are very connected to our attachments, emotional capacity, and maturity. A joy-filled life is possible. Let's talk about how to cultivate one. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 47-52.
How do we keep the devil from claiming footholds in our lives? This series looks at the five main areas where we surrender ground to the enemy. These five areas can be remembered with the acrostic SOUL-L: Sin, the Occult, Unforgiveness, Lies we believe, and Lineage. If sin is like leaving your front door unlocked for the enemy, the occult is like throwing open the garage door and hosting a block party. Unforgiveness is an invitation to the enemy to poison you (rather than the other person). And when we believe lies, it's like shaking hands with the devil and saying, “You're right, and God's wrong.” All of these are common ways we give the enemy permission to a place in our lives. A fifth common way the enemy claims ground is through permissions given by people in our lineage. We're looking at all five of these areas in this week's compilation episode. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 42-46.
Satan thought he had defeated Christ at the Cross only to discover that Jesus had completely flipped the tables on him. Christ is Victor. At the Cross, Jesus Christ disarmed the principalities and powers and canceled the debt against us (Col. 2:14-15). This victory is the foundation of our freedom and our authority in Christ. What does it look like to have this authority? In this series, we dig into Scripture that exposes the devil's nature and look at strategies for breaking free and staying free of the enemy and his snares. We discuss the foundational principles of spiritual warfare, specifically the legal approach that deals with permission and authority. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 39-41. Do our attachment styles, maturity levels, and relational skills affect our prayer life? In this series, we look at listening prayer and inner healing. What is listening prayer and what is it not? This conversation focuses on prayer at the lifestyle level and then on R.E.A.L. prayer at the healing level. How do we invite Jesus into our emotional healing, and what do we do if we encounter obstacles in this process? This episode will deal with some of the common obstacles that keep us from connecting with God. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 36-38.

Last week we looked at four approaches that have missed the mark in transformative discipleship. Now it's time to look at heart-focused discipleship. While Marcus is on Sabbatical, we are revisiting prior series in compilation episodes. This week we're coming back to the F.I.S.H. model. This series introduces the whole-brained, heart-focused discipleship model known as “FISH and Go FISH.” Based on this ministry's flagship book, A Deeper Walk, the FISH series walks through the gospel's four essentials: freedom, identity, Spirit, and heart-focused community and what it looks like to walk it out on mission. The series as a whole is 10 episodes, so we're giving you the first 5 now, and you'll get Part 2 next week. This compilation covers Season 1, Episodes 7-11.Helpful Links:Deeper Walk Online Bookstore: http://bookstore.deeperwalk.com Deeper Walk Newsletter: http://tinyurl.com/DWISignUp Deeper Walk Trailblazers: https://deeperwalk.com/trailblazers/ Podcast Mailbox: http://tinyurl.com/OTTMailbox
Over the summer we're compiling the episodes from an entire series into one episode to release on our normal Monday schedule. So now, let's time travel to July 2022 and On the Trail's first podcast series! The Broken Discipleship Factory series is an introduction to the concepts found in the book The Solution of Choice by Marcus Warner and Jim Wilder. It discusses how the Enlightenment and other philosophical eras impacted the church's approach to transformation and discipleship. This compilation covers Season 1, Episodes 2-6.
We've made it to the promised land! The people of Israel have left behind their victim identity and taken on a freedom identity. It's been quite the journey. In Egypt, we see them in a world of perpetual crisis and in need of salvation. In the Exodus, we see God get them through the tunnel of chaos. In the wilderness, we see them enroll in boot camp to tear down their old identity and learn their new one. And in Canaan we see them building maturity and living out of freedom. As we wrap up our final episode of the Lessons from the Wilderness Series, we hope you'll join us on the trail! P.S. After this week, the podcast will be entering Sabbatical mode for the rest of the summer. Whether you are new to the podcast or have been on the trail with us from the beginning, you might like the opportunity to revisit prior topics in a longer form. Over the summer we're collating the episodes from an entire series into one episode to release on our normal Monday schedule. Stay tuned for that, and we pray you have a blessed summer!Helpful Links:Breakthrough! The wilderness is over! Joshua has taken charge, and it's time to leave the manna behind and live off the fruit of the land God has for them. The lessons of boot camp are all coming together in Joshua. Victory comes when you fight the battles God asks you to fight how and when He tells you. Moving into the promised land doesn't mean the battles end. It means fighting battles that matter and doing it God's way. If there's a formula for success, it's Trust + Obey = Victory, and the ‘how' is the SLOW Model. As we look at Joshua as a model for living the victorious Christian life, we invite you to join us on the trail!
Moses and Joshua were practiced in walking with God — stopping and seeking Him, listening to Him, obeying Him, and watching what happened when they did—or didn't. In this episode, we're looking at the transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua and walking with God into the promised land.
