In this episode of The Sound of Economics, host Rebecca Christie talks about the rise of billionaires in the global economy and United States politics with guests David de Jong, author of the nonfiction book Nazi Billionaires, and Karel Lannoo, chief executive of the Brussels-based think tank CEPS. How are today's billionaires shaping the US political climate, and how have things changed from the first Trump administration? What are the geopolitical consequences? How can Europe emulate US dynamism and economic growth while also resisting the conflicts of interest that arise when money and policy overlap? Will proposals currently pushed by the European Commission – like 'EU Inc' and the Capital Markets Union – shift the needle in this regard? What role does taxation play? This episode tackles some of the hard and complicated questions about money, politics and prosperity in today's world. Related research: Arnal, J. and Lannoo, K. Black people are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause, a harrowing statistic that reproductive advocate and author Khiara M. Bridges has been dedicating efforts towards examining for years. The heightened issues facing Black people in maternal healthcare have deep roots in the history of racial inequality in the US and — as Bridges' most recent work unpacks — persist now even across income levels. In her newest book, Expecting Inequity: How the Maternal Health Crisis Affects Even the Wealthiest Black Americans, Bridges brings attention to the stories and studies that demonstrate how racism in maternal healthcare is not reserved for the poor. After previously researching how race compounded the politics of healthcare for low-income women of color, Bridges continues her work on the links between race and quality of care in medicine. Presented with expertise and empathy, Bridges offers readers a new case study that depicts how these heightened risks and gaps in maternal care exist across income levels. Focusing on a San Francisco obstetrics clinic that caters to the affluent, Expecting Inequity looks at the choices around prenatal care and childbirth that class-privileged, pregnant Black people are making in order to survive what has been called the "Black maternal health crisis." Bridges casts a critically important light on the extensive impacts of racism across class divides, arguing that these systemic issues persist despite the privileges of wealth and access. Drawing on two years of participant-observation research and the impassioned stories of real women and families, Expecting Inequity presents a keen critique of racial issues throughout the maternal medical system and the struggles of the most vulnerable – regardless of wealth or status. Khiara M. Bridges, JD, PhD, is an author, researcher, and scholar specializing in the intersections between race, class, and reproductive rights. She is currently the Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at UC Berkeley, and her scholarship has appeared in the Harvard Law Review, Stanford Law Review, and the Columbia Law Review, among others. Her previously published books include Reproducing Race: An Ethnography of Pregnancy as a Site of Racialization, The Poverty of Privacy Rights, and Critical Race Theory: A Primer. Dr. Karen A. Scott, MD, MPH, FACOG (she/her), proudly stands as the Chief Black Feminist Physician Scientist, Founding CEO, and Owner of Birthing Cultural Rigor, LLC. She developed the first and only validated Patient Reported Experience Measure of obstetric racism© (the PREM-OB Scale® Suite), which is now available for implementation, spread, and scale as prevention and mitigation against obstetric racism. The Stoics understood that the wealthiest person can still be a pauper—poor in peace, poor in contentment, poor in perspective.
We've done plenty of abstract shows on American Christian nationalism. But this one is about a single family: the Greens of Oklahoma City, owners of the Hobby Lobby retail empire, and probably the wealthiest Christian nationalist family you've never heard of. According to investigative writer Michael Blanding, the Greens have amassed a $14 billion fortune from selling glitter glue and popsicle sticks. In his new book The Gospel According to Hobby Lobby, Blanding reveals what he insists is this billionaire family's quest to craft a Christian nation. Hobby Lobby is an all-American story — especially in its ridiculous ironies. A fundamentalist fortune built on bead-buying hippy consumers. The business came out of the Sixties counterculture. That said, the Greens have built the closest thing to a Christian corporate behemoth. Hobby Lobby has no corporate debt, is closed on Sundays, pays above average wages, and has a founder, David, who still flies coach. And yet this is the same Trump-loving corporation that forced its warehouse laborers to work during COVID and denies them birth control coverage. And then there is the Museum of the Bible, blocks from the Capitol — God's base camp, as it's known — stocked with 40,000 shady artifacts including a $1.7 million Gilgamesh Dream Tablet, and forged Dead Sea Scrolls. Such are the absurdities of life in Christian MAGAland. Render unto Trump what is Trump's. Then deduct, forge or steal the rest. Five Takeaways • The Most Influential Family You've Never Heard Of. Hobby Lobby is an $8 billion business with a thousand big-box stores, and the Greens are worth $14 billion — among the richest people in America — from what Blanding calls the perfect recession-proof business: when times are good, people buy crafts, and when times are bad, they make things instead of buying them. David Green saw the waste at the TG&Y department store chain in the sixties, started making picture frames in his garage, and — by his own account — owes the takeoff to the beatniks and hippies buying beads. The family credits God rather than themselves: chosen, anointed, and bearing no responsibility for the wealth. • True Believers, Not Hypocrites. Whatever else the Greens are, Blanding insists, they are not hypocrites: they genuinely believe everyone is going to hell without Jesus, and they live accordingly. No corporate debt, wages well above the minimum, closed Sundays to honor the Lord, a founder who flies coach and lives modestly in Oklahoma. The record cuts both ways: during COVID, warehouse employees worked unmasked in hundred-degree heat after David Green's wife had a vision from God that the company must stay open. And the 2014 Supreme Court case over birth control coverage made Hobby Lobby a national flashpoint — half the country boycotts it, and the other half shops there precisely because of it. • Seven Mountains and the Attack on Pluralism. The Greens work within the democratic system, Blanding concedes under Andrew's devil's advocacy — but they are associated with Seven Mountains dominionism, the crusade for evangelical control of government, law, entertainment, and the other commanding heights of American society. Steve Green, David's son, is on record that there is one true worldview, incompatible with all others, and that pluralism should not exist because the rules are laid out in the Bible. His Bible curriculum for public schools taught scripture as reliable historical truth. This isn't guilt by association, Blanding argues — it's what the family says in its own books and interviews. • Trump as Cyrus. David Green came out against Trump in 2016 — an op-ed, a Fox News appearance, support for Marco Rubio — as a poor example of moral leadership. Then Trump became the nominee, the Supreme Court became the prize, and the family fell in line with the movement's theology of the imperfect vessel: Trump as Cyrus, the pagan Persian king who freed the Jews and delivered for the faithful without being one of them. To their credit, Blanding notes, the bet paid off — no president, including the professed believers, has pushed conservative Christian exceptionalism further through the courts and executive orders. • God's Base Camp: The Museum of the Bible. Blocks from the Capitol sits the Greens' Museum of the Bible, stocked with some 40,000 cuneiform tablets, papyri, and Torah scrolls acquired in part to prove the Bible historically true — and acquired, it turned out, from shady dealers. The federal government seized the $1.7 million Gilgamesh Dream Tablet as looted from Iraq; the museum's Dead Sea Scrolls proved to be forgeries; and the acquisition machine doubled as a tax strategy, with artifacts bought cheap, reappraised high, and donated for deductions so large they sometimes paid for themselves. Radical Christian conservatives held their conferences there — one called it God's base camp. Ingenious, entirely legal, and, in Blanding's telling, entirely revealing. About the Guest Michael Blanding is a Boston-based investigative journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, WIRED, Slate, Smithsonian, and The Boston Globe Magazine. His previous books include The Map Thief, a New York Times bestseller; The Coke Machine; and In Shakespeare's Shadow, the subject of his last appearance on this show in 2022. His new book is The Gospel According to Hobby Lobby: Inside a Billionaire Family's Quest to Craft a Christian Nation (PublicAffairs, July 14, 2026). Hobby Lobby (2014) — the Supreme Court case in which the company successfully argued it need not provide insurance covering birth control, and the moment Hobby Lobby became a national flashpoint. • The Museum of the Bible — the Greens' institution blocks from the Capitol, whose looted Gilgamesh Dream Tablet was seized by the federal government and whose Dead Sea Scrolls proved to be forged. • Seven Mountains dominionism — the movement seeking evangelical Christian control of government, law, media, entertainment, and the other commanding heights of society. •
An unsettling exploration of the persistence of racism in reproductive healthcare in the US—and why even affluent Black women are imperiled by substandard care. From a leading expert on race, class, maternal health, and reproductive rights.Racism in maternal healthcare is not reserved for the poor. An unsparing picture of inequities in prenatal care and childbirth in the United States, Expecting Inequity: How the Maternal Health Crisis Affects Even the Wealthiest Black Americans (MIT Press, 2026) reveals that not only are black people three to four times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause, but racial disparities in maternal mortality persist across income levels. That is, wealthier black people are much more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period than their white counterparts. Focusing on a San Francisco obstetrics clinic that caters to the affluent, Khiara Bridges looks at the choices around prenatal care and childbirth that class-privileged, pregnant black people are making in order to survive what has been called the “black maternal health crisis.”Bridges, whose previous work exposed how race and racism are embedded in maternal healthcare for the poor, draws on two years of participant-observation to show how wealthier black people try to leverage their class privilege to avoid some of the negative effects of their blackness—only to discover that in a country that has never reckoned with its horrific racial past, there is no escaping racism's reach. Throughout the book, engaging, heartbreaking, infuriating stories of women's experiences with pregnancy and prenatal care illustrate how race and racism matter regardless of wealth or status. “Washington and Hamilton were governed by Willing.” — John Adams, 1813Thomas Willing voted against the Declaration of Independence. He was the wealthiest man in Philadelphia, the largest merchant trader in North America, an Anglican slave trader printing money. So he saw little reason to declare independence from Britain. Especially since the renegades — the poor Scots-Irish Presbyterians flooding into the country, the MAGA people of their day — had no love of wealthy aristocrats like himself. And then Willing did something that took everyone, even perhaps himself, by surprise: he financed the very revolution he'd voted against. In The Banker Who Made America, the financial historian Richard Vague tells a story that reframes the Founding. After Bunker Hill, Willing financed the smuggling of gunpowder via the Caribbean at a critical moment in the struggle against the British. He and his partner Robert Morris became the principal suppliers of finance and other essential materiel for the revolution. When the Continental Currency collapsed in inflationary chaos, it was Willing's bank that financed the second half of the war. The purpose of America's first bank, like the Bank of England before it, was to fund war. Without it, there would have been no successful revolution. But the real revelation in the Willing story is political. Pennsylvania radicals created the most democratic constitution in American history — an annually elected lower house, neither an upper house nor a governor with veto power. Willing and his fellow financial elites like George Washington and Alexander Hamilton hated this form of people's democracy. So when they showed up in 1787 to write the US Constitution, they'd learned their lesson: too much democracy is dangerous to the wealthy. The result — an unelected Senate, an unelected president, judges appointed for life — was, as Vague puts it, “a counterrevolution against democracy.” Even Thomas Paine ended up on Willing's payroll. This Philadelphia story became the American story. Follow the money. Five Takeaways• Thomas Willing Voted Against Independence — Then Financed It: The wealthiest man in Philadelphia, the largest merchant trader in North America, an Anglican coastal elite making money hand over fist. He voted against the Declaration of Independence on July 2, 1776. Then he smuggled gunpowder through the Caribbean, funded the Continental Army, and created America's first bank to finance the back half of the war. John Adams wrote that Washington and Hamilton were “governed by Willing.” Nobody knows his name.• The Constitution Was a Counterrevolution Against Democracy: Pennsylvania radicals created the most democratic constitution in American history — annually elected lower house, no upper house, no governor with veto power. Willing and the financial elites clawed it back. The 1787 US Constitution gave America an unelected Senate, an unelected president, and judges appointed for life. Vague calls it a counterrevolution. The tension between money and democracy has never stopped shaping American politics.• Even Thomas Paine Ended Up on Willing's Payroll: The great radical pamphleteer, author of Common Sense, defender of the rights of man — working for the financial elite he should have loathed. Man's gotta eat. It tells you everything about the relationship between money and idealism in the American founding.• The Revolution Wasn't About High Taxes: Americans' tax burden was lighter than Britain's. The real causes were financial: George Washington wanted to speculate on land west of the Appalachians. Willing wanted to start a bank. The British prevented both. The revolution was capitalism demanding permission to operate. Follow the money, Vague argues, and most history that's written without its financial dimension is incomplete.• Some Things Never Change: The purpose of America's first bank was to fund war. The Bank of England was created for the same reason in 1694. The Pentagon is seeking $200 billion for Iran as we speak. American debt has grown to $39 trillion. Willing was the only person ever to turn down the US government for a loan — and he did it twice. We could use a Willing now. About the GuestRichard Vague is a businessman, banker, and commentator on economics. He is the former Secretary of Banking and Securities for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His books include The Banker Who Made America (Polity, 2026), The Case for a Debt Jubilee, and The Paradox of Debt.References:• The Banker Who Made America by Richard Vague (Polity, 2026) — the book under discussion.• Adam Gopnik, “Who Bankrolled the American Revolution?” — The New Yorker review referenced in the conversation.• Episode 2842: Symbolic Capitalism vs. Symbolic Democracy — yesterday's TWTW on whether capitalism permits democracy or the reverse. Willing is the proof.• Philadelphia Citizen excerpt — an excerpt from the book covering Willing's vote against independence.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. What if the reason you haven't created the life you know you're capable of has nothing to do with discipline, intelligence, or motivation — and everything to do with what your brain believes is "realistic" for you? In this episode, we're diving deep into the neuroscience behind possibility, belief, and why so many high-achieving women stay stuck repeating the same year over and over — even when they want more. You'll learn how your brain forms a possibility map that quietly dictates what you pursue, what feels safe, and what you automatically rule out. We'll unpack why "realistic goals" often keep you small, how your fear center and filtering system work against big visions, and why thinking bigger is actually easier — and more motivating — for your brain than thinking small. This conversation will challenge you to re-evaluate the goals you've set for 2026 and ask the question most people avoid: Is this actually big enough to require a new version of me? If you're ready to stop playing within the limits of your past and start expanding what feels possible for your future, this episode will completely change the way you think about goals, growth, and what you're capable of creating next.

PREVIEW Guest: Douglas Boin. This discussion centers on Boin's new book regarding Clodia, who was the wealthiest woman in Rome during the tumultuous era of Julius Caesar. The narrative explores why Cicero, the era's most famous lawyer, became obsessed with her, resulting in her prosecution and humiliation in the Roman Senate. While the historian Plutarch later hinted at a romantic interest, available evidence only documents Cicero's intense disdain for her "confident heirs," leading him to famously refuse to say her name aloud. This personal feud reflects the broader shift from the Republic to the Empire. 1870 EXCAVATING THE FORUM

PREVIEW: Social Security Reform: Capping Benefits for the Wealthiest Guest: Veronique De Rugy Veronique De Rugy discusses the looming Social Security deadline set for 2033, when the program faces a funding shortfall, and potential campaign responses during the 2028 election cycle. De Rugy proposes a reform method she believes can be easily sold to the American people without raising taxes or causing inflation. Her specific proposal invites all Americans, from wealthy to poor, to share in solving the problem by capping benefits for those with the most money and the least need for the program. By capping benefits for the wealthiest seniors, the biggest beneficiaries would see the largest reductions, while those who truly need the program would see no cuts. She notes that today's seniors are generally doing much better financially than when the program was originally created. 1936
