Maison Louis Marie (20:00) was founded in 2012 and has never taken on investment, which, according to the married couple behind the brand, Marie du Petit Thouars and Matthew Berkson, has allowed it to focus on slow and steady growth. It is profitable and does not spend excessively on influencer marketing. "We want to be careful with the brand. We really want to create a legacy brand," Berkson said. In 13 years, Maison Louis Marie has grown to sell eau de parfums, perfume oils, candles, diffusers, body wash, lotion and deodorant, among other products. It entered Sephora in 2017. A little over six months ago, it opened its first dedicated retail space, at Platform, an open-air shopping center in Los Angeles's Culver City. According to the founders, Maison Louis Marie's community members love the space and the chance to shop the brand's full collection — a smaller selection of products is carried at Sephora. "People want to smell [things IRL] — yet what each store can carry is so limited, as there are so many brands," said du Petit Thouars. "[At our store] the customer is so excited to [discover] all the things we offer that they're not aware of and to be able to touch, smell and look," said du Petit Thouars. In this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Sara Spruch-Feiner speaks with Berkson and du Petit Thouars about how Maison Louis Marie is meeting the current moment of fragrance mania, how it's working to attract a younger audience with its soon-to-launch hair and body mists, and what drove its first-ever celebrity endorsement. But first, co-hosts Sara Spruch-Feiner and Lexy Lebsack chat about the different ways customers discover new products nowadays, including ChatGPT's updated shopping capabilities, Wirecutter's new beauty vertical and Ulta Beauty's program transforming its salespeople into content creators.
In Proverbs chapter 3, King Solomon writes to his children to “bind his Torah around their neck.” What does it mean to bind something around your neck? How do you “write” something on your heart? It seems that Solomon is instructing us to take action, but hasn't it “all been done for us”? What are the three things Torah does for us? Rabbi Steve Berkson begins this final episode of the series by expounding on how pursuing the Torah of Yahweh can bring peace into your life. Then, moving into Jeremiah chapter 23, Rabbi Berkson ties it to Proverbs chapter 3 and discusses the responsibility of being a proper anointed/appointed teacher of the scriptures. How did the teachers of Jeremiah's day scatter the people? For what were they being reprimanded and punished? Is there a Messianic reference in this chapter? How is Yahweh going to fix the problem of inadequate and problematic teachers? Moving on from Jeremiah to Luke chapter 8, we see the event where Yeshua, leaving His disciples in charge of getting them to the other side, took a nap. Then a great storm came upon them, causing the disciples to cry out, “Master, we are perishing!” Rabbi Berkson points out a great deal of insight from the telling of this event in the Gospel of Luke that can be applied to our life today. In Colossians chapter 3, Rabbi Berkson teaches about “the Above,” the world that is Yahweh's, and “the Below,” the world that is not His. He provides clear instruction, stating that if you are of “the Above,” raised with Messiah Yeshua, then you should diminish your passion for or any connection with “the Below.” Subscribe to take advantage of new content every week. Dealing with the idea of “Waiting, Seeking, and Being strong,” Rabbi Steve Berkson takes us to Isaiah chapter 51 to provide a glimpse of what “His world” will look like. For one thing, “His world” will include those who “pursue righteousness” (vs 1). For another, “His world” will be filled with the Light of His Torah (vs 4). To enter “His world,” we must have expectancy—a hope for all that Yah has promised to those who are His. Then, moving into the Psalms, Rabbi Berkson shows us the one verse that could solve all our fear and anxiety problems. From the Psalms, we move to Jeremiah, chapter 30, where we learn a little about the two houses, Judah and Israel, and that the doctrine of Replacement Theology has no standing in Scripture. Guard. Walk. Do. Sounds like covenant again, right? Rabbi Berkson takes us to Leviticus chapter 26 and shows us the promise of peace in His world through the words of the Creator. Then on to the prophet Micah chapter 4, as Yahweh says His mountain will be above all mountains and His house will be there, from where the Torah will go out to judge and teach all. In this section, Rabbi Berkson has a very different thought on verse 5 that you have probably never heard before. We are all born with our own desires and passions, but are they right and good for us? What about Yah's desires and passions? Is it possible for ours to meld with His? Continuing in Romans chapter 8, Rabbi Steve Berkson shows us more of what the apostle Paul wrote about the nature of man versus the nature of Elohim. What are the character traits of Elohim? Rabbi Berkson quickly moves us to Galatians 5:22-23 to reveal the answer. In Galatians chapter 5, Rabbi Berkson points out the comparison between the fruit of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit of Elohim. How does this fruit of Elohim show itself in our lives? What is the consequence of it not appearing in our lives? In James chapter 3, Rabbi Berkson helps us understand how the tongue can either steal peace or bring peace. Does “all” always mean “all”? What is the default reaction to being afraid of something? What intimidates you? Beginning this teaching in Numbers/Bemidbar chapter 14, Rabbi Steve Berkson explains some of the aspects of human behavior when confronted with the unknown or the perception of something terrifying. This is the event of the leaders of Israel spying on the promised land, and then the slanderous report brought back by ten of those leaders. From there Rabbi Berkson goes to Romans chapter 8 to help us understand the meaning of the difference between the Spirit and flesh, and the law of sin and death. Without this understanding the chapter will be interpreted incorrectly. In this teaching, Rabbi Steve Berkson begins in Deuteronomy 20 to examine how fear and peace cannot coexist. How do we today “do battle” with others? What's the “fear factor” in those situations? When a situation feels overwhelming, what do you do? How does leadership fit into the picture? Then, moving into Numbers chapters 13 and 14, Rabbi Berkson demonstrates how fear is contagious and highlights the failure of leadership when Israel went to spy out the promised land. Why did they have to “spy out” the land? Rabbi Berkson also offers some life coaching regarding jobs or careers and discusses how the fear of change can seep into one's walk with Yah. From there, Rabbi Berkson addresses the issue of “evil speaking, " in Hebrew “Lashon hara, " literally, “evil tongue. " He shares from the perspective of his organization MTOI, detailing the criticisms aimed at him and MTOI. He provides some behind-the-scenes insights about what others have said with the intention of negatively influencing others. Is there another ministry that would be this transparent? What are you afraid of? Is fear wreaking havoc on your peace? As he takes us to Exodus 14:1-15, Rabbi Steve Berkson breaks down the story of the Israelites leaving Egypt defiantly. However, when they reach the water's edge, they become frightened. The water is before them, mountains flank them on either side and Pharaoh, with his army, traps them behind. Moses then reassures them, saying, “Do not be afraid.” What can you do when you feel overwhelmed by life's challenges? Rabbi Berkson analyzes Deuteronomy 7:17-23 to explain that feeling overwhelmed is an opportunity to exercise your belief/emunah in Him and experience deliverance and peace. Next, Rabbi Berkson takes us to Deuteronomy 18:13-22, where instructions are given to Israel regarding leadership, specifically prophets. The first instruction in this passage is to ‘have integrity'. Respect the anointed/appointed leadership you have chosen to follow. However, when someone claims to be a “prophet” but fails to demonstrate genuine prophecy, you should not fear them. How does ‘worry' relate to Yahweh's vertical authority structure? What does it mean to “be sober and watch”? Wrapping up the topic of ‘worry,' Rabbi Steve Berkson reveals the answers to these questions by taking us to 1 Peter chapter 5. The next enemy of peace is ‘doubt,' Rabbi Berkson examines the event in Matthew 14:22, Yeshua walking on water. What occurs to peace in a state of being ‘double-minded'? Then, going all the way back to the beginning, Rabbi Berkson guides us to Genesis chapter 3, where we see the event involving Adam and Eve, the “snake”, and the forbidden fruit, and how that event thrust all of mankind into a “World Not His.”
What is the source of our peace? Messiah Yeshua said, “My peace I leave with you, not as the world gives I leave with you.” If He is the Word (John 1:14), then it's the Word of Elohim that brings peace to us. What can cause the Word not to take root in the soil of our lives and block the peace that it could bring? Starting this teaching in Matthew 13:18, Rabbi Steve Berkson breaks down Yeshua's parable of the Sower and the Seed to show something about worry that may have slipped by many of us. From there, Rabbi Berkson goes to Philippians 4:4-9, a well-known verse and a favorite of many, to elaborate on some encouragement from the apostle Paul to his students and assembly as he says, “Do not worry at all.” Then, he gives a process for how that is possible. “Our peace comes from our expectation of the future, our understanding of the past and our embracing of what He has given us today.” What could bring any more peace to our hearts and minds than knowing how all this is ultimately going to end? Not just end, but transition to a new beginning. Meanwhile, the prayer of Messiah Yeshua is that we are not taken out of the world, but that we are kept from the wicked. This life in this world is only a test and we need to go through the tests for a reason–to show if it is in our hearts to fear Him and keep His commandments, thus yielding the “peaceable fruit.” In this teaching Rabbi Steve Berkson wants to begin talking about the emotional challenges facing us, first up, Worry. How is Worry like a virus? What is a good way to avoid Worry? What benefit does Worry have? Taking us to Matthew 6:24-34, Rabbi Berkson goes verse-by-verse through the words of Yeshua as He was exhorting His audience at that time to stop worrying and place themselves under the reign of Elohim, observe His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to them. Can peace and joy spring forth from tragedy? In his opening comments Rabbi Steve Berkson describes how Passover which coincides with the death, burial and resurrection of Yeshua Messiah that, although tragic at the time, provide a memorial for us today that can allow for peace and joy to enter into our lives. This teaching covers John 16 & 17 as Yeshua Messiah is giving final instructions and then prays for His disciples. Instructing them as to what is going to happen to them and through them as they become His apostles and praying the Father to keep them and make them one as they are in the world but not of the world. What are the two things that cause others to come against you as you walk out Torah? In what way are you a threat to them? Who is an “Instrument of Elohim”? How is this title abused by many? In John 15:1 Yeshua is talking to his disciples, saying, “I am the true vine…” If He is the “true vine," what would He be warning His disciples of? What is one expected to produce if one is a part of the true vine? What happens to one if one doesn't produce what is expected? Who is the “gardener”? What is pruning, as applied to growing plants? How is it applied to humans in a spiritual sense? Do we need to understand the concept of clean and unclean today? (John 15:3) Why would someone tell another to stay unless the other could leave? (John 15:4) How is love for Yeshua and the Father connected to obedience? Did the Son's teaching do away with the Father's instruction? What does it look like to be anointed and appointed? If you walk out Torah on some level but still feel afraid, panicked, or anxious, and if you worry or experience depression (not clinically), something is missing in your walk… what could it be? Rabbi Steve Berkson highlights how, throughout our Bible, we are encouraged to find peace. But how? Why do some of us struggle to find peace? In John 14:27, Yeshua makes an encouraging statement where He says, “My peace I give you…” and “I do not give as the world gives.” How does He offer His peace, and how do we receive it? What does it mean to “stay in Me”? The phrases “peace from Elohim,” “peace from the Father,” or “peace in Messiah Yeshua” appear nineteen times in the Brit Hadasha. Rabbi Berkson addresses how we obtain it, what prevents us from having it, what disturbs it, and how we might lose our peace. Additionally, in this first part, Rabbi Berkson does something he has never done in his previous teachings. Welcome to another life-changing teaching series from Rabbi Steve Berkson and MTOI. “What has been resolved has to be released.” In this the final episode of Forgiveness, Resolution, Reconciliation & Restoration, Rabbi Steve Berkson gives a more detailed review of everything that's been taught up to this point. He then moves into consequences incurred and consequences removed. What's the beauty of our relationship with our Creator? Rabbi Berkson takes us to 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 to find out. There we find the very well-known verse that starts with, “If my people who are called by my name…” In this passage we see all the processes of forgiveness, resolution, reconciliation and restoration. Does forgiveness necessarily remove consequences? What is it that the Creator is wanting from us as He forgives us? Who does he do all this for? Why should you be Torah-Observant? Because the path, the instructions for coming into right relationship with your Creator was given to Moshe (Moses), as the psalmist King David wrote in Psalm 103. If you have the proper fear or respect of Yah and His awesomeness, you will be given the desire to want a right relationship, aka, The Covenant, with Him. (see Deuteronomy 10:12-13) What does it mean to “pass over the transgression”? What is the Father's approach to forgiveness that we should have? (Micah 7:18) In Jeremiah 31:31, with whom is the “new covenant” made? Has He rejected one group to accept another group? Has this prophecy already happened? When you accept and act on the forgiveness provided you through what Messiah Yeshua did, does this absolve you of sin past, present and future? Why? Why not? Finishing this teaching in the letter to the Colossians, Rabbi Berkson points out words such as expectation, worthy, fit… what do these crucial words have to do with the reward promised to us? Along with those words there are other words such as fruitful, empowered, delivered, redemption. Don't miss this final episode of this series that will forever change your life. In this teaching, Rabbi Steve Berkson focuses on what follows forgiveness, which we seek when we kneel before the Father after trespassing against Him. As he takes us to the first of the passages in this teaching, Luke 23:33, we see Messiah Yeshua as He is being crucified by the hands of the Romans, crying out to His Father to forgive them…they don't understand what they are doing. Can you do the same under much less circumstances? Can your unforgiveness cause someone to stumble? Rabbi Berkson takes us to Luke 17 to find out. Is the definition of the word ‘forgive' in this passage clear? Could you forgive someone who comes to you and repents seven times a day? How does faith (emunah) work together with forgiveness? Rabbi Berkson shows us how from the event in Matthew chapter nine. In Acts 5:30, Rabbi Berkson points out, through the apostle Peter's words, how Yah's forgiveness and repentance remove the consequences of sin. In 2 Corinthians 5:16, Rabbi Berkson explains the apostle Paul's idea that we should now look at forgiveness from a covenantal perspective. He says how much value the Father places upon you that He would send envoys to plead with you, reconcile with you, and restore you to favor. Don't miss this series of teachings on a subject that is so vital yet so misunderstood.

How important is forgiveness? Rabbi Steve Berkson takes us to Matthew chapter six where he shows us the “model prayer” given by Yeshua when His disciples asked how they should pray. In the prayer, which is just an outline for how to pray, Yeshua hits the issue of forgiveness, from the vertical, the Father, and also on the horizontal, between ourselves. Are you willing to do for your brother or sister what you expect the Father to do for you? As He does, so should you. If you don't, He won't. • What is the “negative emotional state”? Then Rabbi Berkson takes us to Matthew 18:21-22 to look at a parable Yeshua told to give an example of what it looks like to be forgiven and to forgive. First, Peter poses the question about how many times should someone forgive another. Yeshua's response was a multiplication equation. • What was the equation? What was the answer? Was the answer meant to actually be how many times we should forgive our brother/sister? • Before the master in the parable forgave the debt of his servant, what happened first? • What is it that Rabbi Berkson says we should never forget? How does it affect the way we treat others? (Deuteronomy 24:18) • How can haSatan use your unforgiving attitude? • What are the two things forgiveness does to thwart the adversary interfering in your life? Do you really understand what it means to “grieve the set-apart (holy) spirit of Elohim? (Ephesians 4:30) Rabbi Berkson makes the understanding so simple. Don't miss it. What about being “sealed by the set-apart spirit of Elohim”? Are you clear about that? Regardless of what others may teach about this subject, Rabbi Steve Berkson brings a more comprehensive approach to this vital, yet misunderstood, subject. • What are the two things that you MUST do when someone has wronged you? • Does the other person have to apologize before you forgive? • Does forgiveness always include reconciliation or restoration of relationships? • What does “trespass” mean? As he begins the text for this teaching in 1 John 1:1, Rabbi Steve Berkson points out that the apostle John confirms all the scriptures that refer to Messiah Yeshua as the Word, and from the mouth of Yeshua as He refers to Himself as the Life, when he says he has looked upon and handled the Word of Life–he was there as the Messiah walked on this earth. As Rabbi Berkson points out, the apostle John emphasizes in the first part of his letter the vertical and horizontal relationships–with our Father and with each other. Note also how much he uses the light and darkness references–walking in the light means guarding His commands, or doing the truth. • What did Rabbi Steve mean when he talked about how Yeshua “took the bullet for us.” • How do we know that we know Him? (1 John 2:3) • Who was the “perfect disciple”? Hint: it wasn't one of the twelve. • What is it that demonstrates our being one with Yeshua and the Father? • Can one say something that is a lie, but not be a liar? “One thing that is vital, but missing in a lot of the teachings that you've learned from all of your life, is the strength of context.” –Rabbi Steve Berkson The topic of this episode of Darkness & Light is, “being called out of darkness, into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9), one of the few real status changes–coming into Light beyond human comprehension. • How does one come out of darkness? How does one know if he/she is in the light? Beginning his text in 1 Peter 1:2, Rabbi Berkson stops to point out to whom the writer was addressing this letter, “those who are…set-apart (Holy) by the Spirit unto obedience…” Obedient to what? • If the Torah became no longer relevant at the time Yeshua Messiah was killed on a cross, as certain majority faith groups teach, then what is to be obeyed? Once again, redefining our lexicon, terms and words, Rabbi Berkson makes us look at the term ‘born again' as the writer uses it to describe those who are walking toward the Kingdom with a “living expectation.” • What is Peter talking about when he uses the term ‘born again'? (1 Peter 1:3) Does he mean it in the same way as Yeshua did in His conversation with Nicodemus? (John 3) • What is the “living expectation”? (1 Peter 1:3) • What is the “inheritance incorruptible”? (1 Peter 1:4) • What is the condition that applies to the “protection of Elohim”? (1 Peter 1:5) • If I am living as a set-apart one, why am I “grieved by manifold trials”? (1 Peter 1:6-7) • Why would you receive praise, respect and honor from Messiah Yeshua? (1 Peter 1:7) • What if this life is all there is? You need to hear Rabbi Berkson as he uses his Gym Membership as an analogy to illustrate real belief. • Did he really say, salvation is nothing? • How does one set themselves apart in their behavior? How does your behavior relate to Darkness and Light? This is the theme as Rabbi Steve Berkson takes you into 1 Peter chapter two, the letter from Peter to the “Strangers of the Dispersion.” • Who are these “Strangers of the Dispersion”? (1 Peter 1:1-2) • What did the apostle mean when he called them “set apart by the Spirit unto obedience” and “newborn babes”? • What is the “unadulterated milk of the Word by which we grow”? Does this imply that there is also “adulterated” milk of the Word that can stunt your growth? • What does it look like to become “as a newborn babe”? In 1 Peter 2:9-10, is the writer saying that we have already become these things? Rabbi Berkson clarifies this passage because, sadly, some readers could and do misinterpret it. • Do you fully care about what is acceptable to the Creator? (1 Peter 2:5) • How do the Gentiles come into the Covenant, into Light? Once again, Rabbi Steve Berkson delves deeper into scripture to uncover more dimensions of Darkness and Light. • Is there anything bad or wrong about eschatology or being concerned about the end time? • What does the concern about the end time have to do with darkness and light? As we read what the apostle Shaul, or Paul, wrote to the congregation of Messianic believers in his letter to the Thessalonians, in chapter five, Rabbi Steve Berkson points out that Shaul was doing some damage control regarding the erroneous teaching about the return of Messiah even back then. • What was the prayer Rabbi Berkson prayed when it came to teaching about the end time? • How does one “prepare” for the return of Messiah? This teaching was given during the 2020 election year, and Rabbi Berkson imparts wisdom about our mindset toward our nation's politics and Elohim's role in them. • Does being drunk only pertain to alcohol? What does being sober look like? In Thessalonians chapter five, the apostle gives direction to the believers on how they should live their lives as they look forward to Messiah's return. Rabbi Berkson unpacks what ‘sober' looks like and what is meant by putting on the breastplate of belief and love and the helmet of the Rabbi Berkson unpacks what ‘sober' looks like and what is meant by putting on the breastplate of belief and love, as well as the helmet of the expectation of deliverance. In verses 12-13, Shaul writes that he begs the believers to “know” those who labor among you and are over you in the Master and admonish you and to hold them in the highest regard in love. Rabbi Berkson relates what it's like to be one of those in leadership and then explains how you should treat those in leadership with whom you interact. • Should your relationship with leadership be based on someone else's experience with that leadership? In the 1970's the singer Bob Dylan sang “you gotta serve somebody.” He pretty much echoed the words from the Bible which has the same message from cover to cover and it's your choice as to whom you will serve. In this teaching, Rabbi Steve Berkson takes us to another of the apostle Paul's writings, known as the Book of Colossians. Beginning in chapter one, Paul addresses his letter to the “set-apart ones”, and “true brothers in Messiah.” From that greeting Rabbi Berkson has the context for the instruction that follows and the key text that deals with Darkness & Light. • Is there a wrong way to seek the favor of Elohim? • What is it we are to be filled with and how are we to walk in this life? • Does darkness have authority in the earth? • How does Christianity use verses 12 and 13 to promote the idea of “once saved, always saved”? • What was the purpose of the blood of Messiah that we see in verse 20? • Do you know what a “Rap Sheet” is? Did you know that we all had one? • What was it in Colossians 2:14 that was nailed to the stake of Messiah? Is this verse misinterpreted by some? • Can you “sin” against another person? • What is the greatest, if not the only problem in the Bible? • How do you become an enemy of God? • Why is the word ‘if' the most awful word to some people? • What is the correct interpretation of Colossians 2:16-17? Yahweh has a vision of how his creation should work. Paul understood this as he penned his letters to the assemblies and called himself a “prisoner.” Rabbi Berkson goes into depth about the problem of how some groups have taken on Yah's vision and either co-opted or usurped the vision. You will not hear about this topic discussed anywhere else, but it is incredibly vital to the growth of the Body of Messiah. Rabbi Berkson takes this thought and transitions to the focus of this teaching, the “Five-Fold Ministry”–apostles (emissaries), prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers. He refers to these anointed/appointed representatives as “Guardians of the Vision” and goes into a bit of depth in describing the roles of each position. • What does “leading astray” mean? Rabbi Berkson explains what that can look like. Winding up this teaching, Rabbi Berkson speaks comfort and assurance to you regarding the hope, not a guarantee, in the salvation that is provided to you for the coming age. • Does Satan have horns, a pointy tail, and a pitchfork? What form can he take? • What if Satan's workers did wonders? Would you be deceived? Rabbi Berkson then leads us into Ephesians 5 to help us understand what it takes to become “imitators of Elohim.” • How can you be an imitator of someone no longer physically present? • To what is love always connected? • Why did Paul say that certain bad behaviors would keep them from the inheritance of the reign (kingdom) of the Messiah? Weren't the Ephesians “saved”? Who was Paul talking about? • What are the “empty words”? To where can they lead? Once again, Rabbi Steve Berkson delves deeper into scripture to uncover even more dimensions of Darkness and Light.
In this episode of Darkness & Light, Rabbi Steve Berkson continues in the Gospel of John, the twelfth chapter, where “certain Greeks” wanted to see Yeshua. • Who were these “Greeks”? What did they want with Yeshua? From this event, Rabbi Berkson makes the point that Messiah Yeshua was beginning to draw those of the nations (Gentiles) to Himself, fulfilling the purpose for which He was sent. • In what way do we serve Messiah Yeshua, according to Him? • Do you love your life in this world more than wholly following Yeshua? Yeshua also said, “The ruler of this world shall be cast out.” • Who is “the ruler of this world”? • Who needs to be dethroned and cast out? • If Yeshua is the Messiah, why did He have to die? Who is this “Son of Adam” Yeshua referred to Himself as? • If one rejects Messiah Yeshua and does not receive His words, what will judge him/her on the last day? What are His words? Then, Rabbi Steve takes us to the apostle Paul's testimony of his journey from darkness into light in Acts chapter 26. In verse 18, Paul quotes the Prophet Isaiah in telling King Agrippa about the commission he has received from the master Yeshua. Rabbi Steve points out something exciting regarding Paul and something he said about works worthy of repentance. As he starts this episode in the Gospel of John chapter 1, verse 1, Rabbi Steve Berkson enlightens us with an interesting observation about Messiah Yeshua and his relationship with his Father. This observation flies in the face of any other doctrine regarding “oneness,” the “Trinity,” etc. • What role did Messiah Yeshua have in the creation account? • In what way does John 1 parallel Genesis 1? In John chapter 1, we are introduced to another John, “John the Immerser,” or “John the Baptist.” • Was there a clash between the two ministries, John and Yeshua? • How else was John known to the people – how did they regard him? • What was his role in the entrance of Messiah into the world? Verse 12 says, “to those believing in His Name.” Rabbi Berkson clarifies that although the name of Yeshua is important, the message conveyed here is not so much the name as it is the “authority” behind the name. Being in the state of “darkness” places one under no authority or the wrong authority. Being in the state of “light,” one has submitted to the authority of Elohim. In that latter state, one is also given the authority to become the children of Elohim. From John chapter 1, Rabbi Berkson moves us into John chapter 3 so he can expound on the well-known verse 16. The exposition he gives on John 3:16 is not for the average listener, as there seems to be much more meaning in this one verse than most people have understood all their life. • What does it mean to “believe in Him”? Is belief merely mental assent? • Why are the words “should not” and “might” used in this verse? • Is John 3:16 an if/then statement? Moving forward into John 8:12, Messiah Yeshua declares He is the Light of Life. Then, He makes the call to discipleship under Him by saying whoever follows Him would possess the Light. Rabbi Berkson gives insight into what it means to possess something. Going forward in the Gospel of John, Rabbi Berkson stops at chapter 9, where we see the account of Yeshua healing a blind man. His disciples asked Him why and how this man became blind. Was it something he or his parents did? Rabbi Berkson cautions all of us to stop looking at someone else's condition and guessing why and how they got there. Sometimes, it's just to manifest the works of Elohim. Diving right into this teaching, Rabbi Steve Berkson starts us in Matthew 15:1, where we see the Scribes and Pharisees confronting Yeshua about how his disciples did not observe one of the “traditions of the elders” – the ceremonial washing of hands before eating food. • For what purpose did the religious authority of the First Century continually confront Yeshua? • What did the Pharisees do that Yeshua took issue with? • Are “traditions” bad and not to be observed at all? • What could Yeshua have done that would have completely destroyed his ministry? • What does the phrase, “blind leading the blind” mean? • What does the true ‘discipleship model' look like? Rabbi Berkson then takes us to the passage in Isaiah 29:13-24 that Yeshua directly quoted when confronting the Scribes and Pharisees about elevating man-made traditions to the level of the Torah, eclipsing actual Torah. In this passage, Rabbi Berkson expands on the issue of Light vs. Dark being spoken of by the prophet. He also shares a conversation he had with an atheist in which Rabbi Steve proposed a “what-if” all that we believe turns out to not be true. Then in Luke 1:67-79, Rabbi Berkson shows us another aspect of Light in the purpose of John, a prophet and forerunner of Messiah Yeshua. His purpose was to also be a light to the people of that time who were living in darkness, shining on the coming of the Messiah, our hope of redemption. In Luke 4:17-21, we see Yeshua again quoting the prophet Isaiah in chapter 61, verses 1-2. Rabbi Berkson takes us to the passage in Isaiah and brings up an interesting point concerning the differences in translations of the Bible. • What translation was Yeshua reading from when he read Isaiah 61:1-2? Finally, Rabbi Berkson takes us into Isaiah 42:1-7, 16 to give more context to Isaiah 61:1-2 as that passage describes a role of the Messiah. Once again, Rabbi Steve Berkson delves deeper into scripture to uncover even more dimensions of Darkness and Light.

After a brief refresher of the last four parts, Rabbi Steve Berkson continues in Matthew 6:24, making the point that there are those who would start teaching at this verse. He states that when other teachers skip ahead in this chapter, some of the meaning of what Yeshua was getting across to his followers would be lost without the context of the previous twenty-three verses. Matthew 6:24 states a basic relational principle–that you cannot serve two masters. In this situation, as Rabbi Steve points out, it's a question of who are you trying to please or impress, man or Elohim? If you try to please both, you will become frustrated, ending up pleasing nobody because of how opposed each party is to the other. Yeshua is making the point that it is impossible. Then, moving into verses 25-34, Rabbi Berkson begins a section on something that all of us can succumb to – worry. Yet, Yeshua assures and comforts us with the knowledge that we are the most important to our Father in all of his creation. Regarding worry, Rabbi Steve discusses what he calls a “problem with husbands and wives.” He provides excellent counsel on the dynamics of the spousal relationship. He also encourages and exhorts you to become the man or woman that Yah intended you to be–the journey starts from where you are today. Segueing into Matthew 11:28-30, Rabbi Berkson points out that Yeshua is speaking discipleship language when he talks about taking His yoke upon you. Taking on the yoke and burden of Yeshua is also the solution to worry. Rabbi Steve gives an unexpected and exciting perspective on the word ‘light' in verse 30. Moving forward, Rabbi Berkson links Yeshua's teaching with Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 6:1 through 7:2, as Paul writes to his assembly in Corinth about being ‘yoked' or learning from unbelievers. • What is a “believer”? • What does it mean to be “lawless”? As he finishes the Tanakh portion of Darkness & Light, Rabbi Steve Berkson takes you to Proverbs 6:20-25 and makes the comparison of parental instruction and instruction from the Eternal Father. The way the author worded phrases in Proverbs was as a father talking to his son, but should be interpreted for you today as your heavenly Father talking to you. Rabbi Berkson also points out that the Torah not only functions as a light instructionally, but it also has a nurturing aspect as would a mother's role in giving instruction to her children, giving comfort and encouragement. • What is meant by a “flattering tongue”? • How many different ways can you attach the Torah to yourself? • How is “deep” darkness defined? Moving into the Brit Chadasha (New Testament), Rabbi Berkson expounds Matthew 4:13-17 as this passage includes a quote from Isaiah as a Messianic proof of Yeshua being the light. The people who were living in that area at that time were sitting in gloom and darkness, not only under the oppression of Rome, but also under the religious system of that time who's leaders were hiding light from them. Then staying within the context of Matthew 4, Yeshua the Light, Rabbi Berkson expounds further as he moves us into chapter 5 where we see Yeshua sitting on a hillside instructing his disciples along with the multitude about what it takes to also become a Light to the world. • In what way are you today “like the prophets of old”? • How do you “lay up treasure in Heaven”? • Why is the ‘so' in the phrase, (Matt 5:16) “Let your light so shine before men”? What are the good works? • Is the definition of the English word ‘fulfill' or ‘complete' in Matthew 5:17, ‘to terminate' or ‘do away with'? Could there be those who are walking in varying degrees of darkness? How would they know? Is it possible that they think they're walking in light, but are not? What would be your role in interacting with them? How do you get to the place where you trust anyone to teach you how to walk out your faith? Are there out there those who are anointed and appointed by the Creator with the ability to help you navigate through life? How do you find those anointed and appointed? “If you can't get to the place of trust, you'll never be able to progress. Progression forward comes out of a place of trust.” ~ Rabbi Berkson Is it a good thing to be simple of mind and heart? What's the benefit? What is the main problem with unity in the Body of Messiah? Once again, Rabbi Steve Berkson delves deeper into scripture to uncover even more dimensions of Darkness and Light. • Can people go back into Darkness once they've been in the Light? (Isaiah 59:1-10) • What does it mean to “speak falsehood”? • How do “works” provide, or not provide, a “covering”? (Isaiah 59:6) • What are the two types of Darkness? • What is “thick” darkness? • How does the Light work in us toward others around us? • What does the phrase “In Your light we see light” mean? • Are there those who could be called the walking dead? Rabbi Steve Berkson identifies the problem people encounter while walking the straight-and-narrow. At some point they begin to doubt, which can turn into disbelief in the deliverance of Yah. This problem moves them slowly into darkness, a place of groping around and not finding their way. However, even in that darkness there is still mercy and compassion in that through the gift of repentance, then heeding the voice of an anointed-appointed, the Light can lead them back to the path of life. This teaching begins a new series of teachings on the subject of darkness and light. From Genesis to Revelation the Bible has much to say and teach us about these two things that we humans experience in our physical world. While darkness and light are two separate entities, they are dependent on each other. Scientists have studied darkness and light extensively, not only on this earth, but also beyond into the universe. They have measured the speed of light at 186,000 miles-per-second. The brightness of light can be calculated in units called lux or to use the precise scientific terminology, illuminance. In this teaching, Rabbi Steve Berkson lays the foundation for the rest of this series in the meanings of darkness and light that goes beyond the physical and into the spiritual aspects of which the scriptures present for our knowledge and understanding, so that the Light will shine in our lives! In Luke 14:1-14 we see Yeshua teaching about honor and shame using the example of the seating arrangement at a wedding feast, making the point about how shameful self-exaltation can be and how honorable it is to have genuine humility. As He was teaching He used a phrase, “resurrection of the righteous”–what does this mean? How are your vertical and horizontal relationships? Do you understand your place and role? Do you understand that if you have a place of authority over others that you also have an authority over you? Do you conduct yourself accordingly with honor? Are you showing the same kindness and patience to others that was shown to you? Do you have a “limited definition” of evil? How is evil defined in scripture? When is public correction of someone appropriate? By whom? What was Paul's instruction to Timothy his student? What does the phrase, under the yoke, refer to? To whom is due “double respect/honor”? Bringing this teaching to its conclusion, Rabbi Steve Berkson's desire is for you to understand that as you conduct yourself in ways that bring honor to Messiah and the Father, honor/respect/esteem will come back to you from them and those around you. There are events in your life that reflect whether or not you bring honor or shame to Messiah and the Father. In Luke 9:23 we hear Yeshua Messiah lay out the requirements for being a follower of Him. What does it mean to take up your stake daily? How does that bring honor? Have you been called into this walk to be miserable? Do you feel trapped in a cycle of guilt caused from your perception of “not ever getting it right”? You can break out of that cycle through using a gift that has been given you by the Father–what is that gift? “Yahweh is not so concerned with what you did wrong, rather, He wants to see what you do next–do you acknowledge the wrong and repent, or do you act like “oh well, no big deal”? The honorable way is to own the mistake, use the gift of repentance and move forward.” Are there things or people in your life that are toxic to your walk? How do you deal with them honorably? Rabbi Berkson breaks down Matt 19:16-30: Why was eternal life asked about and not “salvation”? Why did Yeshua say “If you wish to be ‘perfect'”? What does ‘perfect' mean in this interaction? Rabbi Berkson connects a few scripture dots to clarify the meaning of ‘perfect'. Was Yeshua speaking only of this man's material possessions? Take advantage of new teachings every week. What better way is there to give honor to the Father than to follow in the steps of our teacher Messiah Yeshua and become one in every way with the Father. In this teaching, Rabbi Steve Berkson continues where we left off in John 17 where we find Yeshua praying for His disciples to be “one, even as we are one”. In an unexpected right turn, Rabbi Berkson takes us into Ephesians 4:11 to show us through the words of the apostle Paul that there are people in various positions whose purpose is to help us get to this place of unity with each other and being one with the Father. Is there a difference between being “child-like” and behaving like a child? What is a “Gentile”? When we see the phrase, put off the old man that has been corrupted–what does corrupted mean? Rabbi Berkson explains what being corrupted is in this sense.
In John 17 we read about one of the last prayers Yeshua prayed, and He prayed not only for His disciples, but for us also. To begin the prayer, Yeshua prayed to be glorified/esteemed or honored so that His Father would also be honored. This should be a model for all who are Yeshua's disciple, that we should seek honor only so that our Father would receive honor by the way we think, talk and act. For those who seek to “go deeper” into understanding of the text, Rabbi Berkson gives the opportunity in this episode as he brings out some things that you may not have seen or thought of as you've read this passage before. Why should you have authority over your “flesh”? What is “flesh”? How do you have authority over your flesh? Take advantage of new teachings every week. In John 11:4 we see the event where a friend of Yeshua, Lazarus, is on his death bed and Yeshua says that His Father will receive honor in what happens. Rabbi Steve Berkson brings this event into your life today by pointing out that something you may be going through looks to be hopeless, but to hang on and stay strong, for when you come out of your situation you'll be able to bring honor to your Heavenly Father. What is the one vital thing that you should embrace from all your learning about and understanding of the scriptures and stories in our Bible? Then in John 12:20-26 Yeshua says, “If anyone serves Me, the Father shall value him.” By the definition we've learned about the word honor, we know that to value someone or something is another form of honoring that someone or something. What does it look like to you to ‘serve' someone? What does it mean to “hate” your life? Take advantage of new teachings every week. To learn more about MTOI, visit our website, https://mtoi.org.
