This episode continues the investigation into the disappearance of Ieshia Jackson. It was Halloween night 2020, and 22-year-old Ieshia was getting ready to go to a party. She lived in El Dorado, Arkansas just a short distance away from her mother, her younger brother, and the rest of her family, but because she had had a couple of break-ins at her new home, she was staying at her uncle's. Ieshia and her mother were very close and normally spoke a few times per day. So by November 2, 2020 when Laquita had not heard from her daughter, she was getting worried. Laquita, her boyfriend, and her son jumped in the car and headed to Ieshia's. When the family got there they could see immediately that something was very wrong. Laquita went in and found her daughter's stuff there, including her wallet and cell phone. The place looked like she had just stepped out for five minutes. But Ieshia never came back home. Big spoiler alert: It's “You've Got Mail” with delis instead of bookstores. Ieshia Small grew up playing football with the boys and decided to play basketball in middle school and never looked back. She and her brother were adopted by her AAU coach after her mother passed away when she was in high school. Ieshia talks about being highly recruited out of high school and committing to Baylor at the McDonald's All American game. She talks about how she got hurt the day before the game and how hard the decision was for her to not play in the game. After her freshman year, she decided she wanted to transfer and knew one of the coaches from University of Maryland who invited her up for a visit. She talks about what a great decision it was to go to Maryland. Ieshia talks about how she lives in the moment. As a high school athlete, she never saw herself playing college ball until the opportunity presented itself. The same was true with professional basketball. She never considered going pro until her senior year. Right now she is considering what she might do after she retires from basketball and she talked about how she helps coach basketball and run a travel organization every summer and has found that she really enjoys it. Coaching is a huge privilege and responsibility and a coach will influence more people in year than the average person will in a lifetime. Ieshia has lived and played in China, Dubai, Hungary and Ukraine. She talks about the trials and joys of playing internationally and about how relationships are difficult. She lives in her apartment alone and only has a few American teammates. On top of that, the time difference makes it difficult to stay in touch with people back at home. The holidays are an especially difficult and lonely time to be playing overseas. Ieshia talks about the importance of relationships. It's not about what you have, but it's about who you know and appreciating the people in your life. Everyone is important, from the custodian to the CEO and deserves our respect. In her highlight reel, Ieshia talks about the restaurants in Ukraine and how not only the food is good, but the ambiance is also great! Specifically the Mexican restaurant where they met the owner and now get free food. In her blooper reel she tells a story about a time when her teammates took her to a restaurant in China and she had to pick out her food from the live animals that were there. Ieshia passes the ball to her adopted mom who has inspired her to keep playing basketball. She has grown her up to be a better woman and made her want to inspire others as well.
This episode, Sky sits down with Mrs. Ieshia Robertson, MBA, PMP and talks about how to fail quick in business. Ieshia provides several gems on business, setting up systems, the power of LinkedIn and so much more!
https://anchor.fm/sparerare/message - If you have questions, want to say hello, or want to be a guest or share a song let me know!! Host: RareRuby - https://www.instagram.com/sparerarepodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/rareruby86/ First, apologies for the late release, and know this episode may be a bit long. This week marks round four as my mom heals from C-19. GOD. Prayers were also requested for my son and I as well this past week, thank you all. Why did you choose the songs? Yes, I am aware Stevie is referring to the birth of Aisha, however, sometimes there are stewards of the community or the church, grandparents, family, even the births of our sons where we may feel that same joy of new birth or acceptance, maybe approval. Speaking to this person...is the emotion you'd feel when you see that person you would be ashamed to tell you've sinned but tears are just flowing because they have always been your comfort. I talk about my “hood” upbringing a lot. Don't get me wrong yes I had my choir director from the church as my elementary school principal but I also witnessed so many drug deals, deaths, I said that hell nah my son doesn't need to fight it. She and several others used to help my Grandma get us to church, to school events, church competitions, etc. even when she passed we were scattered all across town, they still tried their best to keep us together. When I came back here I went back to her because I needed the connection but also because I knew I may not make it through without losing myself. I saw her name on my phone a few days back, I cried because no matter the amount of good I do I will always feel guilt because I have yet to personally hear from God that my heart is in the right direction. I didn't have the strength to speak on! I was in tears receiving the call I couldn't make. Not that there's beef it's more to do so with I have disappointed them. One more mentor, grandma that was of no relation by human DNA that loved me and helped me when I was a child. My childhood was NOT easy, not many are. They had their own children, their own lives. Trust, I have tons of people that question why am I a daughter, a sister, but not them, never her. Also, the death of my cousin Ieshia C. has always stung. Thanks to A Turtle's Tale for putting Bruno's song in my ear. God put the others!! Which songs did you choose? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMsvwwp6S7Q - Count On Me by Bruno Mars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPBvq7yewIk - Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAPtTz5OGWs - I Love You, Lord by Benita Jones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWsvZfGVYJM - I Love You, Lord by Walter Hawkins Please specify the lyrics that motivated you: Isn't she lovely: All of them. I Love You, Lord: All of them. Count On Me: All of them. The following topics may stem from the song: Music, COVID-19, Family, My Mom, Respect, God, Growth, Love, Benita Jones, Cold Weather, Ms. B, Stevie Wonder, Rare, Life, Memories, Ieshia, Daily Struggles, Peace, Lyrics, Self-Confidence, Courage, Texas, Faith, Bruno Mars, Walter Hawkins, Blessings, and of course me! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sparerare/support

Getting to know a little bit about Ieshia and why I wanted to do a podcast!
I need you to take a posture of total victory. On July 9, 2016, a balmy morning in Baton Rouge, a 35-year-old nurse inspired the world. Ieshia Evans had watched Alton Sterling’s murder on the news from her home in Philadelphia. She’d never attended a protest before. It didn’t matter. Alton Sterling’s death came on the heels of the brutal murder of Philando Castille in front of his family. She couldn’t sit by. She packed her bags and traveled to Louisiana for a march for Black lives. With shoulders back, heart open, eyes to the horizon – she stood in her fullness as an armed force in riot gear advanced to suppress the peaceful calls for life. She stood her ground. Fearless. With total equanimity. And was arrested. But before this powerful woman was arrested, photographer Jonathan Bachman captured a moment of pure equanimity, of fearlessness, and today, we celebrate Ieshia Evans as a spiritual muse. We name her as first in a line of 21 spiritual warriors whose actions will guide our strategy for complete liberation. “This is the work of God. I am a vessel.” Ieshia saidIt reminds me so much of David when Saul asked who will go and fight Goliath, the giant Philistine. Young David said, here am I, send me. He said, I can take him. “I have a history with God.” Listen... I’m here to tell every Black woman reading this today that YOU have a history with God. Join GirlTrek’s Black History Bootcamp - The Prayer Edition at blackhistorybootcamp.com to receive specially curated emails with prayers, survival tips, speeches + dedicated songs to listen to for each episode. Political tension and an ongoing public health crisis have one thing in common: misinformation. So how do we learn what's what? This episode is a conversation starter. In episode four, we look at how belief systems changed and were shaped this past year while tapping into how they evolved in public health and politics. We learn with Dr. Beth Vonnahme, a professor of political science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Then we speak to Jason Glenn, a historian and philosopher of medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who explains what he's done to quell misinformation about the COVID vaccine and build bridges to better understanding. What we read and listened to: Here are a few fascinating reads and listens we found during our research for this episode. Dig in and let us know what you think! Tweet us at @vickyd_c and @fentywise. Is there a way to combat or stop people from going down misinformation rabbit holes? This expert says yes. Listen to NPR's Short Wave, a science podcast, to learn how.Vox broke down the famous Nikki Minaj incident where she warned people to “do their own research” about the COVID vaccines. Turns out she was basing her hesitancy on an incident that happened to her cousin in Trinidad, which has become a sort of pop culture meme around the internet. Read more here. The Filter's season finale is about grief. We grapple with the vague feelings created when the pandemic continually upended life, and our daily rituals stopped or had to change. We lean into what grief is, what it feels like and how to come out on the other side. Oscar Orozco, a grief counselor at Kansas City Hospice, explains how to navigate those feelings of loss, whether it has to do with losing a person or a routine. Trauma recovery coach Grace Yasmine shares her story of losing her dad, grandmother, brother, mother and son in a short period of time. Coming to grips with grief showed her how to embrace the good and the sad. What we read and listened to: Here are a few fascinating reads and listens we found during our research for this episode. Vicky interviewed Oscar Orozco last May as studies showed that communities everywhere were experiencing compounded grief and communal trauma. This report partly inspired this episode. Read it here. This blog entry by psychological experts helped us get our heads around much of what you hear. In the American Psychological Association April 2020 post entitled “Grief and COVID-19: Mourning our bygone lives,” psychologists explain the mental processes and how our bodies try to cope with profound senses of loss. It even offers ideas on activities that help our brains process changes the pandemic imposed on us. We featured clips of this TED Talk by neuroscientist Zoe Donaldson. Her talk “Lost in Loss: A Window into the Grieving Brain” explains “the neurobiology underlying these bonds and what happens when they are lost.” How do we talk to kids about this sometimes-uncomfortable subject? NPR's Life Kit gives us a 24-minute explainer with six succinct tips, plus some resources if you want to learn more. Check it out here.
