In Late 1987 Palestine erupted. The Israeli occupation was closing in on 20 years and getting comfortable. But seemingly out of nowhere, a mass movement of protests, strikes and boycotts shook Israel and the world. For the first time, the West gained sympathy for Palestine, as images of heavily armed Israeli soldiers brutalising Palestinian women and children were broadcast on TV screens around the world. Today, Associate Professor Islah Jad joins Edgar for a conversation about the First Intifada. Islah has written the book, Palestinian Women's Activism: Nationalism, Secularism, Islamism and was an active participant in the First Intifada.

DRAMATIC STORYTELLING Should you use dramatic storytelling in all our communication? Yes, if you want to captivate your audience and make an impact with your words. This episode reveals the secrets of dramatic communication in the work of David Mamet, acclaimed playwright and screenwriter. It’s amazing how much you can learn from one page of a famous Mamet play, American Buffalo.  You will hear me read the first page of the play’s opening scene. It is very short. The writing is sparse. And it is gripping. You’ll discover how Mamet pulls you into his story and makes you want to hear more. you’ll be inspired by how he masterfully uses these dramatic storytelling techniques: In Late, Out Early Suspense Cliffhangers Show, Don’t Tell You don’t have to be a playwright or screenwriter to effectively use these techniques in your communication. You will hear a specific example of how to do what Mamet does in your own sales presentations and storytelling. As you practice these techniques, you will transition from storytelling to storyselling. You will also have more fun and become an entertaining and profitable communicator. Ready to make your every word count? Listen to this episode. Then listen again. IN LATE, OUT EARLY You’ve learned about how to create a strong hook to open your stories in a previous episode. Now, we will take a deeper dive into the subject. Learning how to grab people’s attention immediately is vital to  your success as a storyteller. You can get everything right after your opening, but if that opening is weak, they will never experience your story. This is particularly true in 2019; it’s the digital age, and we are used to everything on demand. Most people have a Twitter attention span. In Late, Out Early is a screenwriting technique that’s beautifully explained by master screenwriting teacher, Syd Field in several of his books. Field uses this term to describe how you create a compelling scene in a screenplay. Here’s what it means literally. You begin a scene at a tense moment in a conflict between characters. You thrust the audience into the conflict that’s already in progress (in late), let them experience it for a short while, then end the scene before the conflict is resolved (out early). Psychologically, this hooks viewers by arousing strong curiosity and not satisfying that curiosity until much later in the script. The technique opens a curiosity loop and creates cliffhangers. Ideally, you will continue to create cliffhangers throughout your story. That keeps people involved until the end. This next point should be obvious, but I’ve seen it violated often. You must always deliver the payoff to any cliffhanger by resolving the problems you introduce. If you do not, you will have cheated your audience. They will feel it and draw away from you. You will learn how James Cameron uses the in late, out early technique brilliantly in Terminator 2.  In this episode, you will also learn to ask better questions that will strengthen your storytelling power. Here is a typical bad question that people  ask. How long should my video, sales letter, email, or any marketing message be? (they are all examples of stories). Why is it a bad question? Because it does not have an answer that will empower you. It implies that there is an ideal length for your important communications with popspects, clients, and customers. The question that will serve you better is: How can I keep people engaged in any message or story that I deliver no matter how long it is? People will stop watching a boring thirty minute film, but they will remain engaged in a compelling three hour film. You will also hear about a great exercise you can do immediately to add magnetic power to all your communication. That space was a cozy eclectic wine room that made you feel as if you were hanging out in your best friends den enjoying a glass of your favorite vino. In Late 2013, we incorporated a retail wine shop where we sold a hand-picked selection of  small vineyard, boutique wines. Today, we are enjoying the best of both ideas in one location. Many people know Steve Bowman as a founding member and original drummer for the band Counting Crows. Born and raised in Oakland California, Steve had the good fortune of growing up in a town with a history of successful bands like The Counting Crows. Steve established a reputation as a solid musician with his original and creative drumming on the band's 1993 debut album August And Everything After. In Late 1994, Steve left the band and went on to play with artists like Third Eye Blind, John Wesley Harding, and Penelope Houston. While on a trip to Nashville in 2006 to record with the band The Bittersweets, Steve discovered the charm of the music city and moved his family in 2007. Since that time, Steve stayed busy live and in the studio with artists like Big Kenny and many other songwriters. The devastating Nashville flood in 2010 and the damage it did to Steve's property forced him to make many changes in his life. What started as a dark period has turned into an opportunity for Steve rediscover and reinvent many aspects of his life including how he makes music. Click here for pictures.

Tony Reese has a long history of managing new products at BMW, Harley-Davidson and Plantronics. He follows the consumer electronics space closely and has watched as Social Media grew from a personal passion for many into a surgical tool for businesses. In Late 2010 he co-founded Twisplays with Joshua Persky to bring social media status updates out of the device (PC, Notebook, Tablet, Mobile Phone) space and into the shared group space for businesses and consumers. Our Product: Twisplays are LED signs that allow you to conveniently display whatever Twitter streams you desire - your own, your company's, your brand's - celebrity, music, social media, entrepreneur, news, blogger, tech, tv, actor, comedy and more. Share Twitter with your customers, patrons, colleagues, community, guests, family, friends and passers-by. Twisplays can be placed in stores, restaurants, bars, offices, kitchenettes, community centers, bedrooms, living rooms, family dens, stadiums, trade shows, conferences, events or parties - on walls, tables or in the isles - wherever an LED sign can be placed.
