Hey Rokcast world! it's a good day when we can defeat one of the biggest threats mounted against the North American Wildlife Conservation model in decades. Colorado Voters recently defeated Colorado Proposition 127 which would have taken management of Colorado's mountain lions, bobcats--and potentially all huntable species--out of the hands of wildlife biologists. It was a big win for hunters. The defeat of Colorado Proposition 127 was led in part by Dan Gates of the CRWM here, among others. Dan was a frequent guest on the Rokcast here Podcast Archives - Rokslide during the last year, helping hunters understand what was at stake if Proposition 127 would've passed. Today we host Dan again to tell us how we won, and what the future holds if we want to ensure sound wildlife management continues in the USA. Besides a big thanks to some of the industry names that came together like HOWL, Steve Rinella/Meateater Randy Newburg, GoHunt, Cam Hanes, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Derek Wolf, Jason Matzinger, the Mule Deer Foundation and many others, we want to thank some of the Rokslide members who helped out too. From money donated, to time spent, to talking to non-hunters, here are just a few (there were many more) of the Rokslide members who helped defeat Colorado Proposition 127: Corbland Bluumoon gburk Ucsdryder wyogoat LFC911 Nicaburns sndmn11 BTLowry Poser sodaksooner h2so4 Turkeygetpwnd38 ElDiablito Thanks to these and all these Rokslide members who helped defeat this major threat to scientifically based wildlife management. You can view just a few of the many threads created by members on the Rokslide forum here Please continue to support C.R.W.M. here as there are already more battles to win. Travis Hobbs wraps up this episode with a preview to an upcoming episode he's working on about managing for better bucks without continuing to just decrease licenses.

For this episode, Keith and Gray are joined by Glenda Grout, owner of Canol Outfitters in the NWT, and filmmaker Jason Matzinger to talk all things NWT Dall's Sheep. After Covid delays, Jason was able to fulfill his dream of hunting a Dall's ram with Glenda this past July. This sheep hunt was an opportunity for him to gather what he needed to complete a new film project that will also explore the history and significance to conservation and game management, as well as the personal rewards of a selective harvest of a special animal, what we all refer to as a “trophy.” As we know, the notion of trophy hunting is being weaponized to pray away public support for all hunting. This film aims to take this narrative back. The group also discusses the opportunity for someone to win a Dall's sheep hunt in NWT, which WSF, the Association of Mackenzie Mountain Outfitters, and NWT Tourism are offering. The deadline to get in on this drawing is coming up fast, June 30th.

Jason has his own show called Into High Country and has made other films highlighting various conservation topics while working with various conservation organizations. His latest, titled Project Landlocked just dropped earlier this week where he addresses the issue of land that for most is not accessible. Jason Matzinger Talks Shed Hunting, Off-Season Prep, and Hunting with Your Kids – Season 4 Episode 3 – March 12 On this episode, we are talking with Jason Matzinger, host of Into High Country and an ambassador for the Mule Deer Foundation. Spring brings the chance to get back into the field looking for shed antlers and Jason describes how he uses shed hunting as a way to scout and learn about behavior. But we also talk about how spending time out on winter range when the deer and elk are already stressed from a tough winter can be a significant challenge for their survival. Some states have created shed hunting seasons or set restrictions on when people can get into the winter range, but personal ethics and awareness of the stress it can cause are critical. Jason gives us some tips about what he does in the off season to get ready for the next hunting season, and he tells the story about how a nice buck gave him and his son the slip this past season. We then talk a bit about how hunting with our kids and beginning hunters becomes a new motivation after years of hunting. We wrap up hearing about what projects Jason has on the horizon, his role in helping Conservation Continue at MDF, and what some of those conservation efforts are looking like in the coming year.

Episode 13 - Jason Matzinger – #ProjectMuleDeer Into High Country’s Jason Matzinger talks to Steve and Jodi about how he got into producing outdoor television – but more importantly, he talks about his three-year journey to produce #ProjectMuleDeer which will premiere on September 22, 2018. Jason tells us about his inspiration for #ProjectMuleDeer and why this project is so important for not just mule deer but for the legacy of hunting. We talk to him about one of his most memorable deer hunts with a cagey old buck and he also shares why high-elevation glassing is his favorite style of mule deer hunting. Matzinger’s conservation vision shines through in our interview and we are excited to share this episode of Talkin’ Mule Deer right before #ProjectMuleDeer airs on September 22 from 7-8 pm ET on the Sportsman Channel and then from 8-9 pm ET on The Outdoor Channel.
This week on Episode No. 21 I'm joined by Jason Matzinger and Sam Soholt for a killer conversation and lots of laughs. Matzinger is a Montana-dwelling film and television producer and host of the TV show Into High Country on the Sportsman Channel. What really makes Matzinger stand out to me though is his true, unabashed commitment to conservation. He's a lifetime member of RMEF and Mule Deer Foundation and works on content projects with Wild Sheep and many other groups. Sure, he's featured in most of his own films, but that's not the purpose. Most of the time the purpose is to promote real efforts to do good work outside. He's traveled the West for decades, most recently with Sam at his side, filming, hunting and developing some pretty damn unique perspectives on our world. Not to mention a pile of great stories. I caught up with Jason and Sam in Big Sky, Mont., for a late night pizza and beer fueled chat on wild sheep, the community of sheep hunters, Jason's latest film and so much more. Also, our buddy Greg was hanging out providing color commentary. It was past midnight before we wrapped up, so excuse any colorful exchanges. Enjoy.
