Hunting is conservation. That phrase was popularized by David Allen while he was the CEO at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. David is a marketing genius. That phrase went viral and hunters continue to use it at every opportunity. There is a lot of truth to those words. For about the last 100 years hunters have been the primary source of conservation funding. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is an enterprise agency. The roughly $50 million dollars per year they operate with is not provided by tax dollars or other general fund appropriations. Instead, their budget is a result of dollars spent on hunting and fishing licenses and federally matched dollars generated by an excise tax on firearms, ammunition, and some other fishing and hunting gear. This model has worked historically, but it's not sustainable into the future. Conservation funding must be broadened. The Public Trust Doctrine makes clear that wildlife exists in trust and shall be managed for the benefit of all the residents of the state. Because wildlife belongs equally to all the residents, all the residents should contribute to the financial investment needed to effectively manage that wildlife. Through a variety of strategies, New Mexico's conservation funding is both increasing and becoming more diverse. It's more critical than ever that hunters welcome to the table those co-owners of our wildlife who choose not to hunt. This is happening in a huge way in New Mexico. In this episode, Jesse Deubel facilitates a conversation with members of the New Mexico Conservation Coalition to discuss how they are working together to reform the NM State Game Commission, and support our state wildlife agency by ensuring they have the tools, authority and funding necessary to carry out their mission. By working together we can sustain our hunting and fishing traditions. Enjoy the listen! For more info: NMWF Website

Hey Rokcast world! it's a good day when we can defeat one of the biggest threats mounted against the North American Wildlife Conservation model in decades. Colorado Voters recently defeated Colorado Proposition 127 which would have taken management of Colorado's mountain lions, bobcats--and potentially all huntable species--out of the hands of wildlife biologists. It was a big win for hunters. The defeat of Colorado Proposition 127 was led in part by Dan Gates of the CRWM here, among others. Dan was a frequent guest on the Rokcast here Podcast Archives - Rokslide during the last year, helping hunters understand what was at stake if Proposition 127 would've passed. Today we host Dan again to tell us how we won, and what the future holds if we want to ensure sound wildlife management continues in the USA. Besides a big thanks to some of the industry names that came together like HOWL, Steve Rinella/Meateater Randy Newburg, GoHunt, Cam Hanes, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Derek Wolf, Jason Matzinger, the Mule Deer Foundation and many others, we want to thank some of the Rokslide members who helped out too. From money donated, to time spent, to talking to non-hunters, here are just a few (there were many more) of the Rokslide members who helped defeat Colorado Proposition 127: Corbland Bluumoon gburk Ucsdryder wyogoat LFC911 Nicaburns sndmn11 BTLowry Poser sodaksooner h2so4 Turkeygetpwnd38 ElDiablito Thanks to these and all these Rokslide members who helped defeat this major threat to scientifically based wildlife management. Travis Hobbs wraps up this episode with a preview to an upcoming episode he's working on about managing for better bucks without continuing to just decrease licenses.

Vote NO on Colorado Proposition 127 Our state's wildlife deserves management rooted in science, responsibility, and proven practices—not radical, one-size-fits-all approaches. Proposition 127 threatens to undermine years of dedicated conservation efforts by disregarding the needs of Colorado's diverse ecosystems. Effective wildlife management requires a balanced, adaptive approach that considers the unique environmental and ecological needs of each species, rather than imposing sweeping, inflexible policies. This proposition could lead to unintended consequences, risking harm to habitats and disrupting the delicate balance that local experts have worked hard to maintain. For the sake of Colorado's wildlife, let's support smart, science-based conservation efforts, not extreme measures. Also, a few headlines we found interesting include; In Washington, the push to restore grizzly bears in the North Cascades continues, with the National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service publishing their final Environmental Impact Statements. Wolves have potentially been sighted in Nevada, which is definitely not a normal occurrence for the state. Are they there to stay? Or are they Passing through? The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation recently announced that they have committed over $760,000 to numerous projects in Utah to improve wildlife habitat, further wildlife management and bolster research and hunting support. In Vermont, there have been a few updates and amendments to the legislation that would change how the state's wildlife board functions, along with changes to coyote hunting regulations. You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com Show Notes 00:00 As a child in the 70s and 80s, I spent most of my time outside, exploring the creek bottoms, catching crawdads, fishing, and playing with friends. It was a carefree time when we would leave the house in the morning and only return when it was dark. I have fond memories of hiking, skipping rocks, and playing with critters - typical kid stuff, really. 04:41 Fond memories of hunting with parents in Utah. 07:04 Bonding through outdoor activities, father and son. 11:11 Transitioned from news anchor to public relations director. 15:21 Father, a petroleum geologist, inspired deep love for profession. 17:12 Gaining factory work experience, learning from veterans. 19:31 Elk organization's efforts support wildlife and habitat conservation through fundraising and projects like forest thinning and prescribed burns. 24:34 Preserving land for public hunting and fishing access. 27:16 Addressing environmental and animal rights movements is crucial. These movements pose challenges such as limiting fishing and public access. Professional wildlife managers and biologists are essential for informed decision-making. 30:41 Hunting expeditions with family and friends in the mountains, seeking elk but not always successful, while also feeling excited about introducing the activity to a grandson and an unexpected interest from an older daughter. 33:24 Take decisive action and create opportunities. 37:47 I Considered buying various fly fishing bait colors. 39:29 Manages Elk Foundation publication staff and media monitoring. 44:04 Conserved 72,000 acres, opened access to 78,000. Large easement in Kentucky for public access. 36:52 What's one or two of your favorite books? I'm not really a book reader. I'm more of an online article reader. RMEF's Bugle Magazine. Although I do like John Grisham, I'll say that. 34:34 Favorite piece of Outdoor Gear under $100: So I really like fly fish. I buy the materials, and I tie my own flies. I really enjoy that. And so I came across my wife's embroidery thread. She had Orange for October caddises and olive green for olive caddises and black and yellow for really vibrant, for just Adam's flies or just all sorts of everything. And so I didn't purchase it. I'm like, Hey, when's the last time you did any of this? Oh, I don't really do that anymore. I'm going to take this bag, it has all these different colors in it. So it wasn't a purchase. It was more of just a pilfering. Right. And, but that's what I use. I mean, you can obviously go and get different types of materials from Sportsman's Warehouse or Cabela's or wherever you shop and make your own bodies. But I'm telling you that embroidery stuff works great Learn More To learn more about Mark and The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, visit their website at: https://www.rmef.org/ You can also visit The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation on these social sites: YouTube Facebook X Instagram Next Steps If you enjoy interviews devoted to the outdoor industry, find us online at ricksaez.com/listen. This week, we have a special guest, Kara Landolfi, and we will discuss some misconceptions about wild game meat. In addition to that, we have a few news stories we found interesting. In Idaho, a bill was recently introduced that would allow outfitters to purchase an additional bighorn sheep, mountain goat, or moose tag IF said outfitter fills a wolf tag while guiding. Also, in Idaho, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Idaho Fish and Game worked together to add an additional 328 acres to the Tex Creek Wildlife Management area. A new study conducted in Yellowstone National Park was recently published that compiled data over the last 20 years looking into the claim that wolves, grizzly bears, and mountain lions can restore ecosystems. A recent study was published looking into alternative testing methods for Chronic Wasting Disease. I am a firm believer in divine appointments and six or seven years after our meeting, Seth Baranowski is too. From the first conversation I had with Seth at a fundraising shoot for the Never Forgotten Honor Flight in Weston Wisconsin, I knew that I had a new friend. Now one of the men in my inner circle, thankful is an understatement in describing how I feel about God bringing him and his family into my life. He has been a blessing to me, to the archery community and to HHAUSA in so many ways.Fresh off his second trip to the ATA Show, we chat about our week in St. Louis, the Target The Heart Prayer Breakfast, his involvement with HHAUSA and his heart for serving others. The entire Baranowski family, Emmy, Landon, Melissa and Seth, all enjoy archery and the outdoors and it's not uncommon to see all four of them at our events during the summer. They've also added another member to their crew in a young man who lost his father. Seth's servant heart wanted to step up and after asking the boy's mother, he put a bow in his hand. Stories like these are what make our HHAUSA family so special. We all have busy lives but make the time to impact the lives of others. Seth has aspirations to one day start his own nonprofit to come alongside children who have lost a parent and to introduce them to the outdoors. When he does go down that road, I know that he will be successful and lives will be changed in the same way that my good friend has changed mine. His passion for the outdoors, involvement with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, S3DA, HHAUSA and others make it pretty clear that he's not just here as a spectator. With an infectious smile, talk to anyone demeanor and a heart of gold, every organization needs a Seth Baranowski on their team and we are thankful to have him in ours. You can find Seth on Facebook and Instagram and more than likely at most, if not all, of our 2024 HHAUSA events here in Wisconsin. For more information about HHAUSA and how you can support our mission, visit www.hhausa.orgTo purchases HHAUSA hats, shirts, challenge coins and tumblers, visit www.hhasports.com

NEWS NEW PUBLIC LAND ACQUISITION LARGER THAN YELLOWSTONE According to Outdoorlife.com; outdoor enthusiasts, especially those hunters and anglers in the Northwest, will soon have access to 15,573 acres of public land in eastern Oregon. The acquisition of the Minam River Wildlife Area was highlighted in a recent press release from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, which worked with state, federal, and private partners to bring the land under public ownership. When combined with the neighboring Eagle Cap Wilderness and the Minam State Recreation Area, the acquisition stitches together a block of public land that's larger than Yellowstone National Park. It will also improve hunting access to an additional 6,000 acres of land owned by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Hunters, anglers, and other users will be able to access the Minam River Wildlife Area from April 1 to Nov. 30. It will remain closed to the public for the rest of the year. While this closure will put the area off-limits for any late-season hunting and fishing, it's meant to protect big game on their wintering range. A grand opening celebration is currently slated for June 2024. FLORIDA 200 POUND PYTHON A massive 17-foot, 198-pound Burmese python was recently captured in South Florida. It is the second-largest snake ever caught in the state. The Python was caught during a cold front, making it even more unusual as snakes typically remain sedentary during colder temperatures. They are accusing them of intentionally trying to make kids addicted to their platforms. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook collects data on children under 13 without parental consent. The states also claim that Facebook algorithms are designed to hook children with features like the “infinite scroll”. TINDER ADDS NEW FEATURE According to Verge, Tinder, the dating app, has launched a new feature called Matchmaker. It allows a member's friends and family members to pick potential partners for them. Users review the dating candidates suggested by their loved ones. They then have the final say on who they like. HOT TUB HEALTH BENEFITS A new study by Coventry University reveals that soaking in a hot tub may produce the same health benefits as going for a half-hour jog. Researchers had dozens of study participants soak for 30 minutes. The participants experienced major boosts in cardiovascular levels that were comparable to running. Blood flow to their legs increased by 345% while average heart rates shot up 31 beats per minute. The participants' blood pressure also dropped significantly. Researchers found that a hot tub posed excellent benefits to both physical and mental health. The relaxed feeling of a hot tub is something enjoyable which makes the use of a hot tub even more desirable for improving health. FEATURE WHAT CAUSES THE WILD OR THE GAMEY TASTE IN VENISON? The "wild" flavor of venison is directly related to what the animal eats. Venison refers to the meat of antlered animals such as deer, moose, elk, and caribou. The 'wild' flavor of venison is directly related to what the animal eats. Corn-fed deer will have a milder flavor than those that eat acorns or sage. The 'gamey' flavor is more noticeable in the fat. Removing the fat, connective tissue, silver skin, bone, and hair during processing lessens the 'gamey' taste. However, undesirable strong flavors are can result from inadequate bleeding, delay in field dressing or failure to cool the carcass promptly. TIPS TO HELP IMPROVE THE 'GAMEY' TASTE OF VENISON Tenderize: Pound meat with a tenderizing tool or grind the meat. Add Spices: Cover up the ‘gamey' flavors with herbs like rosemary, marjoram, thyme or sage. Rub With Fat: Add other fats to keep game meat from becoming too dry. Rub a roast with oil, butter, bacon fat, or sour cream to add moisture, richness, and flavor. Marinades: Marinades tenderize (soften the muscle fibers) and enhance the flavor of venison. When using a marinade always include high-acid liquid like lemon or tomato juice, vinegar, or wine to soften the muscle fibers, and always remember to marinate meats in the refrigerator. TURDUCKEN THIS THANKSGIVING OR CHRISTMAS The Turducken, or some version of it, has been around for centuries. Multibird roasts were produced by the ancient Romans. Outside of the US & Canada, they are known as a three-bird roast. A roast using various large birds stuffed with a turkey, a goose, a pheasant, a chicken, a duck, a guinea fowl, a teal, a woodcock, a partridge, or a quail for example. They are still very popular in the United Kingdom, often substituting a turkey for a goose. A TURDUCKEN here in the United States, made popular in 1985 by Louisiana Cajun chef Paul Prudhomme, is a stuffed boneless turkey with a boneless duck, then the duck with a boneless chicken with layers of stuffing in between. Finally, the chicken is stuffed with, (You guessed it!) stuffing (or dressing as some say it). This savory and unique main course is a delicacy on any holiday or special occasion, but Thanksgiving and Christmas is the most popular time to serve it. BEER ENTHUSIASTS & BAKERS We need you to weigh in on this trend that crossed BEC's path… Beer is considered the perfect ingredient for richer chocolate chip cookies. To be even more specific, according to Yahoo Style, adding Stout Beer to chocolate chip cookie dough will enhance the flavor and balances out the sweetness. Whether one stirs in the beer or makes a reduction, the claim is that the cookies will have a deep, rich flavor. Have You Tried? Do you have a tried and true baking recipe that uses beer as an ingredient? We want to try it in the cabin kitchen! For the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, protecting everything related to healthy elk populations involves so much more than focusing on just the regal bull elk. In this episode of Fin And Fire With Jeff Mishler, I chat with Mark Holyoak, Communication Director for the RMEF at their headquarters in Missoula, Montana about the successes of the organization and why it is so effective at maintaining a huge membership. I also ask questions related to a previous podcast with ODFW about controlled hunts and where the RMEF finds common ground with government agencies.

This episode is a little off brand for us, but we couldn't pass the opportunity to record it and pass it along to our listeners! Spence and Frawley jump on the mics with Tom Bennett, former commissioner for the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife, and Gabe Baker, West Tennessee's Regional Director for Ducks Unlimited. It may not seem like it, but these two men have a very profound connection. During his time as commissioner, Tom oversaw the capture, relocation, and release of wild, free-range elk from several western states back into the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Gabe's father, Tom Baker, was the chairman for the Kentucky chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation at the same time. Both of these gentlemen give us first hand accounts and perspectives from Kentucky's Elk Restoration Project. If you enjoy the Rolling Thunder Podcast, share it with a friend, leave a rating, and write a review! We'll catch ya on the next one.
