Leading Learning Podcast co-host Jeff Cobb talks with Jeff De Cagna about this and much more. Jeff De Cagna is executive advisor for Foresight First, which helps association boards set a higher standard of stewardship, governing, and foresight, and a board's duty of foresight has been Jeff's focus for the last 10 years. Jeff and Jeff talk about foresight as an intentional process of learning with the future and about intentional learning as a process of sense-making, meaning-making, and decision-making. This episode: As nonprofit management professionals, we are aware of the "3 Duties": Care, Loyalty, and Obedience. These should guide the work and decision making of any Board of Directors, but there is a 4th Duty to consider: The Duty of Foresight. Foresight is the act of looking ahead, anticipating environmental factors, and setting the stage for a future where your successors can thrive and find success. My guest, Jeff De Cagna, FASAE, is an expert on this topic and is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of when he first named it and starting his work in this area. Foresight is a choice, but Jeff makes the argument that it is necessary. We talk about orthodoxy and how established beliefs can get in the way of putting foresight into practice, and why we need it in an age of artificial intelligence. The work of today's board is built on yesterday's accomplishments, and the future board will base its work on today. The future doesn't negotiate, the future doesn't cooperate. It will be what it will be, so how can we work to shape it as positively as we can on behalf of our association, stakeholders and industry? This episode's guest @Jeff De Cagna, is an Association Contrarian, Foresight practitioner, and Executive Adviser of Foresight First, LLC. He and I dig into perhaps one of the most crucial issues for associations to grasp: the duty of Foresight. In order for us to better hear the signals of the future, we've got to be able to turn down the noise of the past. What noise from our past, what baggage are we carrying, such as our orthodox beliefs, that prevents us from engaging in the kind of intentional learning that we need to do to better understand where we are going and what we need to become and what we need to do to guide us towards the pathways we must travel. Special OMG guest Jeff de Cagna explains the importance of fit-for-purpose boards. Although his specialty is associations, the message applies universally!   SCRIPT Hi, I'm Jeff De Cagna, executive advisor for Foresight First LLC, located in Reston, Virginia. My sincere thanks to Matt for inviting me to be the guest host for this episode of the One Minute Governance Podcast.   The focus of my work is on helping professional, trade, and other association boards become fit-for-purpose by setting a higher standard of stewardship, governing, and foresight, or SGF. The crucial question I pose to boards is one we should all ask as we consider our personal responsibility for addressing this decade's intensifying challenges: what will our successors say about us? The purpose of this question is to push association boards to focus their attention on how their actions, rather than their words, will help shape a different and better future for the people who will follow them in the years and decades ahead, with a specific emphasis on future humans they will never know personally.   At the heart of SGF is the board's duty of foresight, a term I originally coined in 2014 and recently redefined to integrate both more than two years of painful pandemic lessons and a clear-eyed recognition of the serious struggles still ahead: the duty of foresight requires association boards to stand up for their successors' futures through intentional learning, short-term sacrifice, and long-term action. In contrast to the legal mandate that underpins boards' fiduciary duties, the duty of foresight is a choice—a profoundly ethical and moral choice—that fit-for-purpose association boards must make every day.

Our guest this episode is Jeff De Cagna, FRSA, FASAE, a leader and contrarian thinker in the association community. He talks with us today about the need for associations to reinvent themselves in the leadership and stewardship roles they were meant to fulfill. 2020 has been a year of uncertainty, protests, political upheaval and refocusing of all kinds of priorities. It's past time associations take a hard look at what their priorities are, and adjust accordingly. Jeff explains that many associations have spent the last 20 years falling into what he calls "the relevance fallacy," or the idea that being relevant to as many stakeholders as possible is the ultimate goal. But relevance has caused association leaders to become more self-serving, and less focused on who they really need to be serving: their members, supporters, and their professional and geographical communities at large. He goes further to say that going forward, associations must show a willingness to be uncomfortable as we transition to a way of doing business that's more sustainable and profitable. Reinventing associations in this image of stewardship will involve hard choices and the courage to take some self-sacrificing actions, but associations' very existence is at stake. If you've been thinking your association needs to regroup as we head into a new year, this episode is for you. Read Part I and Part II of Jeff's article series, The Reinvention Mandate. Why is Foresight the Future of Governing? For associations, the future of governing must be different than its past, and now is the moment to begin creating it. Association boards, chief staff executives and other governing contributors have a unique opportunity to work together and design a more generative integration of stewardship, governing and foresight that can strengthen board performance as well as prepare their associations, stakeholders and broader industry and professional systems to thrive in a world experiencing transformation. In this special Association Chat, KiKi interviews Jeff De Cagna, executive advisor for Foresight First LLC and author of the new eBook, Foresight is The Future of Governing: Building Thrivable Boards, Stakeholders and Systems for the 21st Century.  (The eBook is available as a free download at http://futureofgoverningbook.com.) Among the questions KiKi and Jeff will discuss: Why is board attention the most important and finite resource every association must manage with care? How can boards and chief staff executives think in a new way about what it means to govern? What can associations do today to begin creating a different future of governing?

Ignorance might be blissful for some, but it certainly doesn’t help a successful career in the boardroom. If there’s one thing directors need, it’s the ability to remain forever curious, open-minded, and both internally and externally aware. Without these, ignorance flourishes. But if you want to combat that ignorance, then listen to the latest instalment of Boardroom Hustle. In this episode, Paul chats to Jeff De Cagna, author of Foresight is the Future of Governing, who gives us the most effective antidote to common ignorance: foresight. Jeff is the CEO of Foresight First LLC that aims to improve the way non-profit and association boards perform by cultivating their use of foresight. For over 15 years, Jeff has taught people how to encourage foresight, helping them use it effectively. He provides actionable advice that allows individuals to apply their learned skills to director roles in order to improve and better the performance of both themselves and their boards. Paul and Jeff also discuss the positive ways that foresight impacts diversity, the best perspective to view voluntary (not volunteer!) director positions in a way that gets the most out of them, and why fear can be used as a highly effective motivational tool. This podcast episode is perfect for you if you’re also wondering: What is foresight and how you can encourage it in your own thinking How boards can utilise foresight to make themselves the best possible decision-makers for their companies or organisations The fundamental changes that need to occur in the boardroom right now, in order to begin really making a difference Why a ‘bigger’ boardroom doesn’t actually always mean ‘better’ How you can help your board look beyond the present scope to consider all things future, without becoming futurists The opportunity we’re facing at the moment that will allow us to redesign the boardroom in a way to make it really compelling, satisfying and rewarding How boards can invest their capabilities even more effectively to make the best impact on the important issues, and how foresight is such an integral part of this And, an insight into Jeff’s own foresight, namely, what issues does he think boards will come up against in the near future? There should be no doubt that the future of learning and work will look vastly different than its present; the profound implications of accelerating technology adoption, an aging workforce, economic inequality and other factors will see to that. If associations are going to be influential contributors to shaping that future, however, their decision-makers will need to shift current thinking in fundamental ways, steer clear of counterproductive hype and focus on how their organizations can meaningfully help their current and future stakeholders thrive in this dynamic environment.  Join KiKi and association contrarian Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First LLC for a provocative conversation! Association Chat News Daily Flash Briefing Some sad news this morning as we learned of Anthony Bourdain’s death by an apparent suicide – Bourdain was a chef, author, and TV personality who also appeared years ago at an ASAE conference to talk about lessons about management from running a kitchen.  Bourdain's suicide may not be association news specifically, but it does impact us all. There is an epidemic of suicide in the United States and Bourdain’s death and fashion designer Kate Spade’s unexpected suicide earlier this week has brought a focus to this situation in Americans’ minds. Why is this happening and what can we do about it? How can we identify the signals in others that they may be in danger? What can associations do to curb this problem? There are a lot of questions to be sure. More than what this Flash Briefing can contend with. Perhaps as we go through our day today we think on this and discuss it with each other online. Or call each other. Or actually meet with each other in person. Maybe we do something instead of shaking our heads and moving along. Maybe. This wasn’t the Flash Briefing I had in mind to post for today, but I had to share it. I’ll post another briefing later with more information about next week’s events and some info on things that happened this week, including some excerpts from my interview with association contrarian Jeff De Cagna. Please let me know if this news of suicide is getting to you too. Send me a message on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram @kikilitalien or email me kiki@amplifiedgrowth.net and let me know. If you are thinking about suicide...if you or anyone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline @800273TALK (8255).

Here is the latest news in the association realm for Wednesday, June 6th, 2018! Yesterday I interviewed Jeff de Cagna on Association Chat. The title for that show? “From Hype to Help: Associations and the Future of Learning and Work.” Jeff talked about why leaders need to shift their thinking and avoid orthodoxy. The reason we need to make this change?   Jeff De Cagna says association leaders need to lead their members and association staff in nurturing learning because new tech, like machine learning and AI, is transforming industries and society so that we need to become better at the human strengths we have...embracing creativity, ingenuity, and curiosity to move from incidental learning to intentional learning. It was an amazing interview with a great thought leader in the association space and you can catch the edited podcast version of the Association Chat podcast! The Dangers of Generational Orthodoxy In shaping their approach to both the present and the future, associations are all in on generational thinking. The language of generations is featured prominently in association publications and social media, frequently heard at association conferences and meetings and factored deeply into how associations organize their work, especially the work of membership recruitment. But many of the assumptions made by generational thinking are flawed, misguided or just plain wrong, a form of emergent orthodoxy that may well do more harm than good for associations.  Join KiKi for what promises to be a provocative conversation with association contrarian Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First LLC about how you and your association can think and act beyond generational orthodoxy and learn with the unfolding under 40 future! ***Love Association Chat? Our guest today, Jeff De Cagna, will change the way you think about your approach to board recruitment, management, and collaboration. Charging that nonprofit organizations of all ages, sizes, and missions are missing a crucial opportunity for growth and relevance by under utilizing their boards, and that boards are similarly wasting their skills, time, and connections by focusing on the minutiae of organizational operations and micromanaging staff rather than looking ahead and being proactive about inevitable transitions organizations will face as technology continues to evolve. Host an annual meeting? Jeff De Cagna has some perspectives on the continuing value of holding "interruption-based experiences" like meetings that force most work to come to a standstill. If you're holding an expensive annual meeting because "that's what we've always done", you won't want to miss this episode. Jeff De Cagna FRSA FASAE is a strategist, design thinker and foresight practitioner who collaborates with association and non-profit boards of directors and their staff partners. He is also a respected contrarian who challenges association/non-profit orthodoxy at every opportunity.
