From kitchen fires to candle mishaps, from firehouse kitchen tables to national fire code debates—we're hitting it all in this one.Brian, aka East Coast Lincoln, opens the show with heartfelt honesty and a long-overdue moment of silence. The crew dives deep into the real-life value of public education in the fire service, how fire inspections aren't just for the public—but for firefighter safety too—and why thinking outside the box starts at the kitchen table.Matt, Doug, Adam, and Brian talk everything from funny waffle fire calls to emotional fire fatalities, and the impact a well-placed smoke detector (or a poorly labeled panel) can really have. Also: FDIC hats, Unkie's ribeyes, Doug's smoke detector game, and Brian's big news about joining the International Fire Marshal's Association Board. It's real, it's hilarious, it's important. There's a module for that. Brief history How old: created less than month ago in Nov 2023 by listener James Shields, whose drupal.org username is lostcarpark Versions available: 1.0.0-beta3 release, which works with Drupal 10.1 and newer Maintainership Actively maintained, latest release made earlier today Test coverage Number of open issues: 5, 3 of which are bugs, but all but one are now marked as fixed Usage stats: 6 sites Module features and usage James actually created a Drupal advent calendar a year ago, on his website lostcarpark.com. The idea was to showcase a new module every day, similar to advent calendars that provide a chocolate or a toy each day, hidden behind a cardboard door James' initial version displayed the content in a traditional calendar format, using the Calendar View module. What he really wanted, however, was a way to present the content using clickable doors to reveal new entries The new Advent Calendar module provides a new view display, so you can configure what content type or other filters to apply, and use fields to specify what information to show The module uses a Single Directory Component for display, hence the 10.1 requirement There is also an “Advent Calendar Quickstart” submodule that sets up everything for you, including a content type, view, and 24 nodes to populate it for you Each site visitor gets to “open” the door to new content as it is published each day. For authenticated users, which doors have been opened is stored as user data, and for anonymous users it's kept in local storage via Javascript In addition to this being an interesting module in its own right, the advent calendar James has created this year is also a community effort. He's managed to enlist a wide variety of contributors to write about modules or aspects of the Drupal community that they're passionate about, so it's a great way to up your Drupal game. You can open a new door yourself every day at https://lostcarpark.com/advent-calendar-2023

This week, Donna DiMaggio Berger sits down with Sarah Emmons, the Florida Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), to discuss recent incidents of hate symbols being placed inside community associations, how antisemitism takes root and what can be done to combat it. Specifically, Sarah and Donna discuss the 2022 Weston Hill's hate crime that took place inside the upscale Hunters Pointe Park community. For over a month, residents were met with ongoing racial slurs and antisemitic messages written on their playgrounds and swastikas in and around the restrooms at the Weston Hills Country Club. Eventually, the Broward Sheriff's Office were able to arrest three teenagers all of whom lived inside the Hunters Pointe Park community. At the ADL, Sarah leads Florida's anti-hate efforts which includes responding to antisemitic and hateful incidents and delivering anti-bias educational programs in schools, colleges, and workplaces. She also leads advocacy efforts that protect marginalized communities. Special OMG guest Jeff de Cagna explains the importance of fit-for-purpose boards. Although his specialty is associations, the message applies universally!   SCRIPT Hi, I'm Jeff De Cagna, executive advisor for Foresight First LLC, located in Reston, Virginia. My sincere thanks to Matt for inviting me to be the guest host for this episode of the One Minute Governance Podcast.   The focus of my work is on helping professional, trade, and other association boards become fit-for-purpose by setting a higher standard of stewardship, governing, and foresight, or SGF. The crucial question I pose to boards is one we should all ask as we consider our personal responsibility for addressing this decade's intensifying challenges: what will our successors say about us? The purpose of this question is to push association boards to focus their attention on how their actions, rather than their words, will help shape a different and better future for the people who will follow them in the years and decades ahead, with a specific emphasis on future humans they will never know personally.   At the heart of SGF is the board's duty of foresight, a term I originally coined in 2014 and recently redefined to integrate both more than two years of painful pandemic lessons and a clear-eyed recognition of the serious struggles still ahead: the duty of foresight requires association boards to stand up for their successors' futures through intentional learning, short-term sacrifice, and long-term action. In contrast to the legal mandate that underpins boards' fiduciary duties, the duty of foresight is a choice—a profoundly ethical and moral choice—that fit-for-purpose association boards must make every day.

To the Point with Ed Mullins: Edward D. Mullins has been a member of the New York City Police Department since January 1982. On July 1, 2002, he was elected President of the Sergeants Benevolent Association by an overwhelming majority of its members. Early in his career he was assigned to the 13th Precinct on Manhattan’s East Side. After nearly 10 years he was promoted to Detective and assigned to the 10th Precinct in Manhattan’s Chelsea area. Promoted to Sergeant in 1993, he was assigned to the 19th Precinct on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and subsequently transferred to the Detective Bureau in Brooklyn South, where he served in the 67th Precinct Detective Squad, Special Victims Squad, and the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. Mullins learned about labor management as a PBA and SBA delegate in the 13th and 19th Precincts and the Detective Bureau. Mullins is one of four children raised in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Debbie Newsham is a former caregiver and author of The Lighter Side of Alzheimer's. Through Debbie's ten years of experience caring for her parents, she learned to recognize that there are indeed humorous moments, and it is ok to laugh. For Debbie, recognizing and cherishing these moments allowed her to continue caring for her parents at home. Debbie is a former member of the Alaska Alzheimer's Association Board of Directors as well as having volunteered as an advocate for home-based care subsidies. She has traveled to Washington DC, and Juneau, AK seeking funding for these programs. She lives in AK with her husband, 3 children, and don't worry she is closely supervised by her 2 cats. Caregiving is tough work. It is emotionally, economically, and physically draining. Recognizing that her fear of the future was preventing her from enjoying the relationship she had with her parents in the present prompted her to find another way. The first was to accept that her relationship with her Dad had forever changed and she needed to change her expectations. Second was to see, enjoy, and not feel guilty about seeing the humor and enjoying the good times. Through her new lens she was able to laugh along with her Dad and not sweat the small stuff. EP133: Covid-19 Vaccines For Agriculture's Essential Workforce With Christopher Valadez, President Of The Grower-Shipper Association Board Of Directors, And Dante Galeazzi, President Of The Texas International Produce Association

The Produce Moms Podcast

“You can deploy the vaccine in an environment where there's already built in trust.”Chris Valadez (7:37-7:42)   “Our growers [in Texas] were really in the thick of their season when we had to adjust,” says Dante Galeazzi, where Chris Valadez's agricultural workers (in California) were just getting started on their season when the pandemic hit.    No one could have expected or been prepared enough for the Covid-19 outbreak this year. Even though we saw store shelves empty of toilet paper, bread, and boxed goods, in most areas around the country produce remained readily available. Our frontline workers and first responders have worked hard to ensure we remain as safe as possible, and our agricultural workers, farmers and produce industry have worked just as hard to make sure safe, fresh, healthy food has kept America fed during this time.    “It is vital to maintain the food that Americans need to eat.” - Dante Galeazzi (11:16-11:20)   As soon as the pandemic hit, Chris's Grower-Shipper Association partnered with others in the agricultural industry and with the county government to put together a best practices guide that was made publicly available. They needed to get a baseline of safety measures out there fast that made sense for everyone on an operational level, whether it was a farmer, a transportation unit, an employee housing site, or other integral part of the produce industry operation chain. The guidelines were based on what the CDC, local and state government announced.    In a lot of regions where agriculture makes up one-third or more of the job market, crowded and congested personal living situations became an issue fast. Most of these areas have a lack of available and affordable housing, which disproportionately affects many people that work in agriculture. Individuals were going home to many others where the spread of the virus (or illnesses in general) was being exacerbated.    The agriculture industry knew they needed to remedy this fast. Free of charge to farmers and ag workers, the companies that give you your most favorite food brands offered nursing, housing and feeding to help get people out of congested environments. Individuals that contracted the virus were put in this housing (for free) for a two week quarantine period, were provided with all of their medical needs and basic necessities, to reduce the spread of Covid-19.   These are efforts from the agricultural industry no one has talked about, or what would have happened if the people of this industry weren't able to contain the spread of the virus within the produce supply chain. Growers and shippers were some of the first companies to immediately set up whatever they could, whether it was hand sanitizer stations, wood or plastic partitions, sanitized uniforms, shoes, and gloves, or even shower curtains to prevent the spread of Covid. There's even packing houses who are implementing blood oxygenation tests!   Now that we're seeing vaccine trials go through and vaccines being given to our first responders and medical workers, it's time to talk about who will be next in line. These people are extremely important to our society, and after others who are high risk for the virus, such as the elderly, farmers and food workers should be thought of as top priority for the vaccine. Something that's critical in thinking about this, however, is partnering with farmers and local clinics to administer the vaccine to the agriculture population.   “We've got to get our workforce vaccinated so they can keep putting food on American's tables.” - Dante Galeazzi (16:08-16:11)   Dante and Chris both advocate for the use of the employer when administering vaccines to farmers and agricultural workers because those individuals already have a built-in trust with them versus government officials where they might be fearful, lack trust or have political views getting in the way of their safety (and the safety of our country). Both associations are doing what they can to advocate for agricultural workers to be next in line for the vaccine by speaking to the state and federal government.    What's the risk if this doesn't happen? If more ag workers become sick with the virus and aren't able to work, or risk spreading it to our vital food sources, the demand for food will stay high, but the supply will decrease, meaning prices will go up. With the fragile state of our economy right now, that's the last thing our country needs. Hopefully we continue to make progress with the virus and the agricultural industry is seen as a priority to receive vaccination next.   How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business! The Thoman women raise fine-wool Rambouillet sheep, a uniform herd of Hereford cattle, and spirited Thoroughbred-Quarter horses. Throughout personal and business hardships, Mickey and her family have remained relevant in the ever changing and ever challenging world of agriculture with a spirit of tenacity and togetherness. Over the years, Mickey has lost her husband and ranching partner, Bill Thoman, as well as two of her seven children. When asked if she would give up her operation after her husband passed, she said, “Why would I sell it? This has been my whole life. I’m still here, and I’m still enjoying it. I think that’s what he would have wanted.“ Mickey is one of the 33 founding members of the Green River Valley Cowbelles.
