AUGUST 25, 2024 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST REV. KENDRA BALLIET JAMES ROSS, ORGANIST Prelude - Joyous Procession- Garry Cornell Welcome *Call to Worship ONE: Calling all children of the Living God: the gospel is good news for every age and every stage. ALL: Let us worship together, the young and the old. ONE: The good news is proclaimed in God’s words, and also with crayons, silly songs, snacks, and rest time. ALL: Let us worship together, every generation. ONE: We come together with different abilities and disabilities, learning in a rainbow of ways and styles. ALL: Let us worship together, with our family of faith. ONE: All are welcome in the arms of Christ who proclaimed, “Let the children come!” ALL: Let us worship together, united in our eternal hope. *Opening Hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus” #514 *Opening Prayer God our teacher, who helps us to understand the world around us, thank you for the privilege of education. You have blessed our communities with teachers who take new skills and concepts and pass them along to each new class of young people. God who came as a child to show us how to be fully human, to show us how to be children of God, You have given our children minds that grow and develop in unique ways, at unique speeds, and we are astounded by that miracle. You speak to us through the words, actions, play, and feelings of children. You call us to listen to the Spirit speaking through our young siblings in Christ. We celebrate the beginning of this school year and ask for your blessings upon the children, the educators, and the families who support them all. But in this celebration of education and learning, we do not forget there are children and families and teachers who do not have the resources they need. When systems are unjust, the outcomes are unacceptable. Today we remember those who are beginning school this year: those who have what they need to learn and grow in safety, and those who lack supplies, teachers, safe buildings, and accommodations for all needs and abilities. We come to worship together, to lift up our young people and all those who care for them and teach them. Open our hearts to what you are saying to us today. Amen. For Further Study How has Jesus changed your life? Where in your life do you need freedom and healing? How would you like to see Jesus transform someone you love? What would it take for Jesus to transform our society or community?
THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Guest Preacher: Kurt B. Crays, CEO - Erie United Methodist Alliance Organist: James Ross Prelude - Scherzoso- Joseph Rhineberger Gathering at the Gate Welcome *Call to Worship (based on Luke 24:36-43) Leader: What is it like to literally not have a home, a place to lay your head at night? “Homeless” can also mean a sense of not feeling “at home,” lacking a feeling of belonging, feeling alone even in the midst of others. So many in this world are isolated. How can we find, and offer each other, “home” with the assurance of the presence of God and a beloved community? People: Rise up in us and we will rise From death into a newfound life: From bondage freed, from harm released, From illness healed, as one in peace. When all is lost our hearts are warmed, Our hope restored, our lives transformed. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Leader: Jesus appeared among the disciples again. He stood among them and said: “Peace be with you.” Yet, the disciples were terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. People: Centering our hearts and minds in peace is a way to feel calm within. We learn to still ourselves to be open to unimaginable possibilities. Leader: Jesus asked: “Why are you frightened and why do doubts arise in your hearts?” People: Doubts play an important role in our faith journey. Facing our uncertainties allows room for our hearts and minds to be filled with healing narratives. Leader: “Touch me and see,” Jesus invited, as he offered his pierced hands and feet. Yet, the disciples — even in the midst of their joy — felt disbelief. People: Sometimes we are presented with signs of hope long before we realize we are not abandoned. Our hearts rejoice, yet our minds still wonder at what we have seen. Leader: Jesus asked if they had anything to eat, and the disciples shared a piece of fish, which Jesus ate while in their presence. All: Jesus frequently shows us how to create community in the midst of feeling lost. We can form communities of sustenance and belonging. We are not alone – we are found – when we share Christ’s call to peace. Leader: This is a Word of Hope for the people who long for it. All: Thanks be to the Living Word. *Opening Hymn "What A Friend We Have in Jesus” #526 *Opening Prayer Leader: "Christ is Risen!" All: “He is risen indeed!” We repeat our Easter shouts of surprise and joy again and again, for news of your victory over powers of death and evil is news so startling so amazing so different from the news that bombards us day by day. Beyond our comprehension You startle us again and again with resurrection Life, bringing grace and hope and joy. You, in your risen power, are shaping all our days, and so we praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Proverbs 29:18 (NAS) – [18] Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, but happy is he who keeps the law. Proverbs 29:18 (AMP) – [18] Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man] — blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he. Acts 2:42-47 (NIV) – [42] They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. [43] Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. [44] All the believers were TOGETHER and had everything in common. [45] Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. [46] Every day they continued to meet TOGETHER in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate TOGETHER with glad and sincere hearts, [47] praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Our Vision: “Loving and Living Life Together in Jesus” Our Theme: BETTER TOGETHER Acts 4:27-31 (NIV) – [27] “Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. [28] They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. [29] Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great BOLDNESS. [30] STRETCH OUT YOUR HAND TO HEAL and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” [31] After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God BOLDLY. 2023 Theme: Stretch Out Your Hand to Heal
Last week Lead Pastor Mike Mozingo encouraged us to be grateful for the cross of Jesus. For the death of Jesus and him giving himself for our salvation. But the story doesn't end there. This week Pastor Mike spoke on the resurrection of Jesus Christ!! He chose to die on the cross for our sins, but death wasn't the end. He rose from the grave and in a live today. Continue listening to hear the good news and what that means for your life.
Sunday, August 21, 2022 – Pastor Ryp Hankins brings a message titled “Are you a Disciple or a Follower of Christ?” He does a great job defining the difference between being a “Follower of Jesus” or a “Disciple of Jesus.” We are called to be disciples and make disciples – but do we really understand what that means? Disciples of Jesus learn to obey His teachings and have a deep foundation that isn’t easily shaken when the storms of life come their way. In contrast, followers of Jesus are easily thrown off course when the teachings of Jesus are hard and/or when life throws a curve ball when one isn’t expected. As you listen to Pastor Ryp, you will find this to be an encouraging and challenging message that we can all learn from and find a new hunger to dig deeper into the Word of God to be committed disciples of Jesus.

So often we can hear the phrase, “We need to walk with God.” But what if we don’t know HOW to walk with God? Walking with someone means that you are headed to a similar destination, you have a similar pace, and you have to be in sync in your travels. Today we will look at what is means to “Walk with Jesus” as we prepare to unpack the last week of His life headed to his Crucifixion.
This plea has come from the lips of many who know not what to do. Jesus provides help if we will but accept his help. Let’s consider just a few ways Jesus helps.
our King is Coming! Zechariah 3:1-10 (NIV) – [1] Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. [2] The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” [3] Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. [4] The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put rich garments on you.” [5] Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the LORD stood by. [6] The angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua: [7] “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here. [8] “‘Listen, O high priest Joshua and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. [9] See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,' says the LORD Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day. [10] “‘In that day each of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and fig tree,' declares the LORD Almighty.” The names Joshua and Jeshua were common in ancient times. The Greek equivalent is spelled “Jesus” in English, and all three forms of the name mean “The LORD saves.” (NIV Study Bible Notes) Ezra 5:2 (NIV) – [2] Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak set to work to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, helping them. Haggai 1:1 (NIV) – [1] In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest… 1. Jesus is our high priest. Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV) – [14] Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. [15] For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. [16] Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 (NIV) – [5] For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, [6] who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. Hebrews 9:15 (NIV) – [15] For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. 2. Satan is our accuser. Zechariah has described a courtroom scene in which Joshua is the defendant, God is the Judge, Satan is the prosecuting attorney, and Jesus Christ is the defense attorney, the Advocate of God’s people before the holy throne of God… God’s throne is a throne of justice and God is a righteous Judge. Knowing this, Satan pointed out Joshua’s defilement, which symbolized the defilement of the nation, and insisted that a holy God punish His sinful people. (Wiersbe Bible Commentary) Zechariah 1:9-10 (NIV) – [9] I asked, “What are these, my lord?” The angel who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.” [10] Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to go throughout the earth.” Job 1:6-7 (NIV) – [6] One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. [7] The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.” 1 Peter 5:8 (AMP) – [8] Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. Job 1:8-12 (NIV) – [8] Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” [9] “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. [10] “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. [11] But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” [12] The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. Revelation 12:10-11 (NIV) – [10] Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. [11] They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. 3. The LORD rebukes Satan. Jude 4, 8-9 (NIV) – Jude 4 (NIV) – [4] For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord… [8] In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. [9] But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Deuteronomy 34:5-6 (NLT) – [5] So Moses, the servant of the LORD, died there in the land of Moab, just as the LORD had said. [6] The LORD buried him in a valley near Beth-peor in Moab, but to this day no one knows the exact place. 4. God snatches us from the fire. The Lord is both defense attorney and judge; he censures the prosecution’s arguments, dismisses the case, and declares Jeshua innocent because he has been chosen and cleansed by God. Like a burning stick that has been snatched from the fire, Jeshua and other Hebrew exiles were plucked by God from near destruction in Babylon. (NLT Study Bible Notes) Amos 4:11 (NIV) – [11] “I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. Jude 22-23 (NIV) – [22] Be merciful to those who doubt; [23] snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Sunday, July 18, 2021 – We are continuing to introduce our series on the Beatitudes as given in Matthew 5. The message is titled, “The Direct Nature of Jesus” and in this, we try to understand the context of the day that Jesus gave His longest sermon beginning with the proclamations of Blessings as Jesus describes comes to those that are willing to accept the challenges of the Beatitudes. Jesus is describing what it’s going to look like to follow Him and be a faithful disciple. He begins with the command to “Repent”. So we describe what repentance looks like and then look at the expectations of what Jesus has for all of His faithful. Understand, there is nothing wrong with knowing that God has expectations of those that are obedient followers. Listen in and be encouraged and challenged at the same time…

Sunday, July 11, 2021 – Welcome to our Sunday Worship service. Today we are beginning a new study about Jesus’s teachings that we call the Beatitudes. Reading through this passage in Matthew 5, we see the word Blessed used numerous times. What is Jesus meaning by this? So, we are going to try to define what God’s Blessings really mean for us. We know from scripture that it is God’s heart and will to bless us, yet we find that He gives us a choice in if we will receive and walk under the Blessing that He gives. One of the biggest takeaways from today’s message is that God’s Blessings don’t always appear to be blessings to us in the moment, but in the end they always are. We can also misuse God’s Blessings and turn them into a Curse if we’re not keeping our eyes focused on Christ. A simple definition of God’s blessings is this: “It’s anything, good or bad, that turns our eyes on Jesus”. Let that settle into your spirit so that the next time something “bad” happens to you, focus more on Jesus and less on the problem, and then see how God uses turns that “curse” into a “blessing”! Be blessed as you worship with us….

Christian hope is not a misplaced belief in our human ability to work for a utopian life here and now—as we are all learning, no amount of political ideology or medical science is going to save us, nor will greater education or a larger economy is not going to save us, our jobs or recreation, our families or friends, or anything else can save us. Progress is not the hope we thought it was! “Hope is, therefore, not irrational, but rather is based upon God, who has proven himself faithful. Biblical hope is hope in what God will do in the future. At the heart of Christian hope is the resurrection of Jesus” (Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible, 997).
