Just after Ash Wednesday we invited Fr. John Rossi, administrator of Saint Bridget University Parish (https://www.stbridgetup.org) in Glassboro, NJ to give us some tips for Lent. At the time we said we would have to have him back to talk about Holy Week & the Triduum, and so we have! Of course, the world has changed a bit in the intervening weeks, so Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh also talk with Fr. Rossi about the work he’s being doing in his parish to make sure the spiritual life of the parish is maintained, even as we follow social distancing guidelines and accept the cancellation of in-person, public Masses throughout New Jersey. It’s another great interview with Fr. Rossi, filled with great spiritual and practical tips. Lent is upon us, so this week we invited with Fr. John Rossi, administrator of Saint Bridget University Parish in Glassboro, NJ, on to the show. Fr. Rossi chats with hosts Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh about Lent, how to use the seven weeks before Easter to reflect on our faith, the different spiritual techniques available us, and why it’s critical to make the effort to embrace Lent. It's incredibly uncommon for people to hurt themselves out of the clear blue sky and for no reason whatsoever. Even if we can't comprehend why, or understand someone's motives, or make sense of any of it whatsoever, people inflict pain on themselves because they're already hurting. It's one of life's harshest paradoxes. Our guest this week -- John Rossi -- seeks to explore that paradox by telling the story of his years-long struggle with anorexia (a severe eating disorder that sees its victims literally wither away), and how, by employing pain, he hoped to erase all else that ailed him. Not surprisingly, his approach didn't work, but thankfully, he's here with us today to tell his cautionary tale. It's almost always better to work through your pain than avoid it all costs. Here's one story that succinctly explains why.

On today's podcast we bring you a talk by Luke and Ryan Hart, who say people must be braver about confronting domestic abuse when they see it. The brothers, whose father murdered their mother and sister, were addressing the Safe World Summit organised by SafeIreland at Dublin’s Mansion House recently, an event that grapples with the realities of domestic and gender violence, its manifestations and society’s response. Also from that conference: Suzanne Connolly, who was sexually abused by her adoptive father John Rossi, speaks about how victims of sexual crimes are treated by the criminal justice system and society in general.
Belfast woman Suzanne Connolly was 11 when her adoptive father John Rossi began sexually abusing her. He did so almost daily until she was 14 when after disclosing the abuse to a school friend she was taken out of her home and placed into care. Despite telling the police about the abuse and Rossi admitting his crimes in the 1980s, it took 34 years for the case to be heard. This week John Rossi was convicted of five years in prison but is likely to serve only half of that. Connolly waived her anonymity exclusively to the Irish Times in order to name her abuser and to express her belief that the judicial system is “rigged against children and enables paedophiles in their crimes”. She tells Roisin Ingle why she is hoping she can play a part in changing the system so that more predators are brought to justice and children in vulnerable situations are protected. Also on this week’s episode, we hear from the makers of Kiss Kiss, Slap Slap, a play about rape culture in Dublin Fringe Festival.
