It was a panel discussion with Steven, Rola, Margaret Ewing, Director of Programs, and former board member, Jon Kessler. We talked about apexart's history and the its unique models for inviting curators and accepting fellowship candidates. We also talk about it's "art-avoidance" fellowship program which Steven created, in part, from what he thought was missing during his own development as an artist. Artists Mika Rottenberg and Jon Kessler will collaborate to present SEVEN, a performance and installation that stretches from the urban landscape of New York to the savannahs of Africa. Mixing Kessler’s kinetic sculptures with Rottenberg’s absurdist videos, SEVEN will collapse film time and real time to create an intricate laboratory that channels body fluids and colors into a spectacle on the African savannah. In New York, a “Chakra Juicer” will capture sweat from seven performers engaging in ritualistic athletic activity. Paul Thek. Werkschau im Kontext zeitgenössischer Kunst | Werkvorstellung Jon Kessler spricht über sein Werk »The Palace at 4AM« (2005/07), das im Rahmen der Ausstellung "Paul Thek. Werkschau im Kontext zeitgenössischer Kunst" 15.12.2007-30.03.2008 im ZKM | Museum für Neue Kunst zu sehen war. Der amerikanische Künstler Paul Thek (1933-1988) genießt unter den zeitgenössischen Künstlern Kultstatus – durch sein spannungsreiches Œuvre, in dem er Themen und Symbole aus Religion, Kunst, Theater und Literatur aufgreift, nimmt sein Werk bis heute bedeutenden Einfluss auf die Gegenwartskunst. Zeichnung, Malerei, Skulptur, Installation und raumgreifende Environments gehören gleichermaßen zu Theks Ausdrucksmitteln. Seine Kunstwerke zeigen sich mystisch, religiös und kritisch sozialen Ungerechtigkeiten wie auch der Kunstwelt gegenüber, wobei er mitunter widersprüchlich zwischen nomadieserendem Hippietum und verklärendem Charismatiker pendelt, aber auch nicht selten eine Portion Melancholie und Humor in seine Werke mit hinein spielt. Bekannt wurde Paul Thek mit der Serie Technological Reliquaries (Technologische Reliquienschreine) – Plexiglaskästen mit realistisch anmutenden Fleischstücken aus Wachs, die er zum ersten Mal 1964 in New York ausstellte. Mit Hilfe der Kontraste von Material und Inhalt bewegt sich Thek mit diesen Objekten - wie auch mit der legendären Installation Tomb (1967) - gleichzeitig zwischen dem scheinbar Realem und dem offensichtlich Artifiziellem. It is mainly for this reason that one of the early theoretical masterpieces of this epoch, Susan Sontag's Against Interpretation (1962), was dedicated to him. The mold castings, also those of his own body parts, wax replicas of human tissue, hair, teeth, and bones in Plexiglas cases, which he produced between 1964 and 1967 as Technological Reliquaries, in their mixture of desire and repulsion, decay and pathos, held up the truth of the body to the world of commodities and the transfiguration of the everyday, as well as the idealization and dramatization of corporative minimal art.
