255 - Galaxis

Your Stupid Minds

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2025 69:14

Your Stupid Minds sifts through some of Chris's $4 DVD acquisitions from Half Price Books and these things called "video stores" where our ancient ancestors used to purchase their entertainment wares. We start with the 1995 sci-fi direct-to-video low budget epic Galaxis (or Terminal Force), which some critic (we'll never know who) described as "Star Wars meets The Terminator." Starring Brigitte Nielsen, Richard Moll, Fred Asparagus (lol), Alan Fudge (lol), Sam Raimi for some reason, and professional Diablo III gold farmer Arthur Mesa. In a far off space battle that is in no way like the opening of Star Wars, Lord Tarkin (Craig Fairbrass) battles it out with evil space wizard Kyla (Moll). When Tarkin is betrayed by his sniveling wiener underling (Raimi) Kyla steals their magic crystal (which may be called Galaxis, the title is never mentioned nor explained) that gives them power or something. Ladera (Nielsen) comes upon Tarkin, who reveals to her that there is a second crystal, which she can use to defend the Sintarian people, or Kyla could use to destroy the universe or something. Unfortunately, the crystal is on Earth. Doubly unfortunately, it's now in Los Angeles (but good for the filmmakers, who already happened to be there). The film switches abruptly from a Star Wars ripoff to a Terminator ripoff, when Ladera teams up with a rogue-like drunk named Jed Sanders (John H. Brennan). They do some Terminator stuff and Kyla shoots them with force lightening. Meanwhile corpulent gangster Victor (Asparagus) chases after Jed with various Wile E. Coyote instruments of death, and two hapless detectives (Roger Aaron Brown and Cindy Morgan) traipse around 90s LA sighing and shaking their heads at all the violence.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series of series on the independent games of the last couple of decades, starting with 2012's Fez. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Single-digit cubes Issues covered: our real plan or lack thereof, early games, the indie revolution, the influences back and forth, the pressure of the space we're in, a highly visible indie, games from that year, sequels vs the different stuff in the indies, democratization of the market, the console cycle, always online fiasco, getting on the Steam store, opening console store fronts to independents, limitations, the broadband market and bandwidth costs, the publicity on the store, low cost of goods, continuing power of retail, a two dimensional puzzle game in a three dimensional world, charm, great music and MIDI with an unsettling feel, rotating the world, rebooting the game, achieving the effect without perspective, the Trixel engine, having a hard time getting it, trusting the game, having a new lens on a game, taking the time to infuse the whole experience, team sizes, telling a different story with an existing language, having fewer people to get on board, independent publishers and producers, influences, glitch aesthetics, map language, climbing on the sides of things, stopping time while the world rotates, how the editor might work, games from the past, CONFIG.SYS (dang it, could not remember), skipping over generations. Arrggh! A Video Game Podcast from The Waffling Taylors

Jay and Squidge take listeners on a delightful journey through the world of gaming, blending deep dives into classic games like Diablo with bite-sized banter and hilarious anecdotes. From Squidge's love for the loot system to Jay's wild idea of telling strangers to wake up.Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Show NotesBecause he started us off last time (and even though he was the guest for this one), Squidge introduced the episode and the idea behind it:Waffling Taylor's Lite: the pocket size podcast that packs a gaming punch. In this serving of bite-sized banter with a side of gaming goodness, we talked to Squidge about his thoughts on the Diablo series.Take it away, guys.— SquidgeThe WT Lite series of episodes will be peppered in alongside the "standard" episodes, so keep an eye out for them. These episodes allow us to focus specifically on a specific game or series, and really focus on our guest's thoughts - Jay: Squidge's elevator pitch for these episodes was "All the waffle, half the caffeine"The whole point of these Waffling Taylors Lite episodes is to get a kind of feel for what the guest really, really like about the game in question. We've already done one with me about the Borderlands series, and I thought we could focus on Diablo III. I know that, at the time of recording, Diablo IV has just come out of the beta period, and happy days for the people who are playing it. But we're focusing on the ones that came out beforehand— JayWhich Class Would You Be & Why?Jay started the conversation about Diablo with a question that, pretty much, all Diablo players have asked themselves:So in the Diablo universe, there are loads and loads of different characters. If you could be a character, or a character class, within the Diablo universe, what class would you be and why?— JayAnd Squidge's answer is slightly more beastly than you might have thought... for someone who may or may not be an anthropomorphised cartoon wolf in an RPD police officer uniform, that is.It would be a character from the second Diablo and it would be from "The Lords of Destruction", which is an expansion pack that came out for it. It would be a Druid. They brought Druids back for Diablo IV, they [weren't] in Diablo III. They took a slightly different turn on that.I would be a Druid, mainly for the ability to summon familiars to fight alongside me, all the while I turn myself into a werebear so that I can cast elemental skills. Because when you're a werebear, you can still cast elementals. So I'm a bear running round with my familiars next to me, and I'm making volcanos appear out of nowhere and summoning tornadoes.— SquidgeImagine the scene: you're walking through the forest and suddenly a bear, summoning other animals, and doing magic.Scary stuff, for sure.Full Show NotesCheck out the full show notes for the full list of Squidge's questions, some extra stuff, and some links to related things.Have you played any of the Diablo games? Activision Blizzard, the publisher of Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft, has said that Chinese publisher NetEase declined a last-minute offer to extend their publishing deal in China. This means that services for games such as Overwatch 2, Hearthstone, and other Blizzard titles will be discontinued on January 23rd as planned. In November, the company announced that it was looking for alternative ways to bring its games to China but no further information has been revealed. As a result, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch 2, the StarCraft series, Diablo III, and Heroes of the Storm will no longer be playable in China. However, Diablo: Immortal, Blizzard's mobile game, is published under a separate agreement and is unaffected at the moment. We hope our brothers and sisters can return to Azeroth and their communities soon. Are you ready for this podcast?  Because we aren't.    A quick announcement - we're taking a break from #GameFace! for a bit. With PAX heading our way and Kyle and Simone getting busy with life, it's best to take a chill pill and come back in time for #terrorTober. In the meantime, join our Discord and tell us what you're playing in October!    Have we covered the Tokyo Game Show? Or was that another, dodgier, podcast? Well, if we haven't, we're about to go over it. All the exciting announcements that came out. From fighting games to Japanese games to surprise Game Pass drops - there's so much to go over. And as is expected with these things - almost everything is coming to #GamePass!    343i has had a big shake up recently. Bonnie Ross has left and now we have three more peeps to try guide Halo along. Is this good news? Is this bad news? Or do you think, like Kyle, that this means the future for Halo Infinite is bright?  Diablo IV is getting a beta test! How exciting! And it's all end game content? What does this mean... Avoiding story spoilers is the official reason Blizzard have given, but there's got to be more. Nightmare Dungeons incoming! And we are hyped! But the beta is only going out to those who have played a significant amount of Diablo III end game? Hmm...    If you'd like to support the podcast, but don't know how, then just leave a review on your podcast platform of choice. It takes 2 seconds and helps in more ways than you can imagine. Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen We did not record a show last week because the news of our country was a bit too fresh for most of us to talk about video games.  Now another week has passed and the wound has begun to scab over a bit.  Tonight we start down a Thalen and Grace but eventually pick up a Thalen as we go.  We talk about Summer Games Done Quick and have an aside about Wiley Wars coming to the Switch.  From there folks talk about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and trying to play it six-player on a console that does not support that.  From there Bel talks about falling back into Diablo III and finishing out Season 26…  while also playing a horrible ideas class that is really bad at boosting friends.  From there Bel talks about his recent experience diving down the Path of Exile rabbit hole.  Guild Wars 2 made many changes that were not well received by the most hardcore players, but we largely think they are a good thing and talk about that.  Finally, we wrap up with a quick discussion about Outriders Worldslayer and how it is still a very bleak game, but also a great mechanical experience if you can get past that. Topics Discussed Summer Games Done Quick Wiley Wars on Switch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge Diablo III Season 26 Bad Ideas Build Being a Bad Carry Path of Exile Bel Goes Down this Rabbit Hole Guild Wars 2 Massive Changes Outriders Worldslayer Still a Bleak Game

If you had access to the stargate.. sorry, FARgate, how would you use it? Would you steal from the world's banks? Use it to fast travel to different continents for leisure? Or would you use it to steal cable? If you chose the latter, you'd probably fit in well with the Plutonians. Emory and Oglethorpe get high (420 blaze it), blast their eyes out, make counterfeit shirts, and unleash the universal remonster (accidentally) on the Aqua Teens. This episode also spawns a rare Diablo III item! Did Rick and Morty ever do that?!
