As debates rage in state legislatures and school boards about history curriculums or critical race theory or the impact of slavery, we know that how we imagine our future has everything to do with how we remember our past. In this episode, we begin our series pulling apart the stories we have been told about the American Dream through our own multiple, honest, complicated stories of Dreaming America. We begin with our host, Amanda Henderson's own family story. Moving West to find a better life, open space, and a land of their own, Amanda's grandparent's encountered hardship and built community. Their story mirrors the classic stories we have been told about pioneers and homesteaders, and there was more to that story, and there is more to our story. Begin the journey for the weeks ahead in the American Southwest with the stories we are told before we move further into the many stories we hold. Are you a student looking to find your career path? While you may not have even considered railroading, let us put it on your radar. Many of the engineering (yes, even civil), technical, and communications fields apply to the railroading industry and there are resources available to students to help them find their way. In this episode, Walt Bleser chats with Bryan Schlake an Assistant Teaching Professor at Penn State-Altoona, and recent Penn State-Altoona graduate Gary Babcoke now a Project Engineer with NICTD. Both are mechanical engineers who have extensive experience navigating the AREMA Student Program, from attending a Conference to applying for scholarships, to forming a Student Chapter, and now working in the railroad industry - they have tried it all. Their stories are a testament to making the most of your resources and taking advantage of every opportunity when starting your career in rail.
KMOX's Debbie Monterrey talks with Kristen Sorth of St. Louis Public Library about what is at the library for students to use while studying.
In our second summer mini-episode, we are joined by Zion, a rising senior and current intern in the USC Dornsife Office of Admission and Student Success. Zion and Mark discuss resources for our new incoming students to take advantage of as they become the next class of Dornsife Trojans!
How much digital learning is too much?Does using pen and paper still have a place for the classroom? The truth is - digital and printable, more traditional instruction can live harmoniously…together in the same classroom, even! It's all about striking a healthy balance between the two!If you've been around for a while, you've likely picked up on my love for integrating technology into your daily instruction and I do think that using multimedia activities is essential for a 21st century classroom. However, I also think that balancing multimedia activities with tried-and-true teaching practices is powerful as well.I want to share what I think a good technology balance looks like in the elementary classroom. I want you to walk away from this episode feeling empowered to continue using those best practices that do NOT involve technology right alongside 21st century activities that will expose students to new technology. It doesn't need to be an either/or situation. Technology and non-digital resources can coexist - and they should. We can use technology to complement other meaningful teaching practices. Providing this balance in your classroom will help students to see the importance of balancing technology use with offline interactions in their daily lives as well.LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODEEPISODE 57: Accountable Talk: A Teacher's Guide to Encouraging Deeper & More Meaningful Talk Among Students EPISODE 99: Classroom Technology: A Simple Model for Using it EffectivelyGrab by FREE Nonfiction Text Features Linktivity here.Join the LINKtivity Learning Membership and get access to my entire vault of LINKtivity Interactive Learning Guides - CLICK HERE to join.
I first heard about Megan Fate Marshman when our girls came home from Hume Lake Christian Camp and said, "We loved Spirit Girl!" (And Bethany wanted to BE the Spirit Girl--the one who led all the games and was so funny and fun!) Megan still works for Hume Lake as Director of Women's Ministries and is still funny and so fun, but also a great speaker and author. She pastors at Willow Creek Church and ministers at her home church, Arbor Road in S. California. At the time of this recording, Megan had been married 10 years but her dear husband passed away suddenly a few mid 2021 and we pray for her heart to heal and her life to continue to bless hundreds and thousands of her listeners. Please join me in praying for Meg as she mothers her two darling boys. Today's episode is about her latest book, Meant For Good—The Adventure of Trusting God and His Plans for You. A must-read. Put it in your own stocking! Some of the many great quotes from Meant for Good: We want answers, God wants trust. God knows His plans for our lives; it doesn't say He will tell us those plans. We must prioritize time for intimacy with God; no one will do that for us. The purpose of prayer is not to share our agenda with God. It's to align our lives with His agenda. About Meg: As an international speaker at churches, conferences and university chapels, Megan Fate Marshman is a leading voice to this generation. She has devoted her life to loving God and overflowing His awesome love to others. Megan is currently a teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church and the Director of Women's Ministries at Hume Lake Christian Camps. She also shepherds women at her home church, Arbor Road. She also enjoys adventuring all over the globe with her boys speaking and sharing the love of Jesus. She authored the books “Meant for Good” and "SelfLess," and co-wrote the book, "7 Family Ministry Essentials," with Dr. Michelle Anthony. Megan also served as the Director of Student Resources for David C Cook Publishers, where she led a team in creating TruIdentity, a spiritually forming, Christ centered, and family empowered youth ministry curriculum. In February of 2021, Megan's husband, Randy Marshman, went home to be with Jesus after suffering a heart attack. For Megan, “to live is Christ, to die is gain (Philippians 1:21).” She grieves with hope and lives to become more like Christ so others may know Him more through her. Megan lives in Lakewood, California with her two boys, Foster and Jedidiah.

Huge thank you to the UC Davis MENASA Resources Center (@ucdavismenasa) for having us as guest speakers! Following our presentation on the (brief) history our podcast, what we've learned along the way, and an overview of queer organizing in the SWANA region, we recorded a live Q&A with some awesome attendees. Our discussion included pre- and post-9-11 racial perceptions of us as Arabs in the US, finding queer SWANA and Muslim community (in various locales and online), what brings us Queer Arab joy (from cooking to listener DMs to messy chosen families). Part 2 of this series focuses on our Student Resources and Leadership Opportunities.
Today’s episode is in partnership with Thrivent Student Resources (https://www.thriventstudentresources.com) which is a thriving hub of tools and resources related to helping you achieve your college dreams with as little debt as possible whether you’re going to a trade school, local university, vocational school or any other form of higher education. And the reason why I was interested in doing this collaboration to talk specifically about student loans is because the student loan crisis is real - many of you who listen to the podcast are dealing with large student loans or have children approaching college age and I thought it would be great to have someone from Thrivent Student Resources come on to the podcast to share what you can do to successfully minimize and manage your student loans & still achieve your financial goals. And so my guest today is Susan Farrell, the Vice President of Curriculum Design for Thrivent Student Resources where she provides leadership for educational efforts. She conducts webinars and workshops on ways to reduce student debt payments and on topics like how to pay for college without sacrificing your retirement. She also designs curriculum that educates students and parents about planning for college, paying for college, and preparing for life after graduation. She is also a member of the education finance target market – being the mother of two college-age children. On this episode Susan shares: - How she’s educated her children on managing their student loans. - Specific advice for students approaching college age, students in college, college graduates and also parents on managing student loans. - Key resources that can help you make the best decisions around your student loans and how you approach dealing with them. - How to continue working towards your financial goals while paying down your student loans. The tools and resources we mention on this episode: - 5 Steps to prepare your finances for college and minimize your student loans: https://bit.ly/2tt9gm1 - The college savings estimator tool: https://bit.ly/2LieNT7 - The cost of college comparison tool: https://bit.ly/2mjwnLL - GradPath - Crowdfunding your college education: https://bit.ly/2KY98Wj Learn more: - Thrivent Student Resources has an incredible community you can join to take advantage of more insights, tools and resources by becoming a registered user at https://www.thriventstudentresources.com/ Subscribe to www.CleverGirlFinance.com Check out the Clever Girl Finance YouTube Channel at YouTube.com/CleverGirlFinance Do you follow Clever Girl Finance on Instagram yet? In this episode I discuss several resources that you should maximize as a student, so that you are best prepared for entry into your career field. It is difficult to know when you will need to use the knowledge and skills that you obtain as a student, in your career. By making the most of some of the resources that are available to you as a student, you will strengthen and better prepare yourself for entry into the field.
MOTHER, SCHOLAR, TEACHER, REVOLUTIONARY: NEŞE DEVENOT Today is the last day of Lent, as tomorrow begins the Holy Triduum (the three days leading up to Easter), and this is our sixth consecutive episode, fulfilling our promise to bring you an episode every week of Lent without fail. Thanks go out to KMO for inspiring this goal with his 9+ years and 500 episodes of weekly C-Realm Podcasts! This effort has been so much fun and so energizing that we're just going to keep on going! To celebrate the goal and the return of Spring, we are asking that you help us reach 1000 "likes" by the end of March! Nese and Ellis-D Today, Jonathan talks with his friend, Dr. Neşe Devenot, PhD., Neşe is an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Puget Sound, where she teach classes on psychedelics and literature. She is also working on a book, Chemical Poetics: The Literary History of Psychedelic Science. Neşe was also a 2015-16 Research Fellow at the New York Public Library's Timothy Leary Papers and a Research Fellow with the New York University Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Study, where she participated in a qualitative study of patient experiences. Neşe received her PhD in 2015 from the Program in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing her studies on psychedelic philosophy, the literary history of chemical self-experimentation (“trip reports”), and radical poetics. She is the founder of the Psychedemia interdisciplinary psychedelics conference (which has a radical and profound influence on Jonathan and inspired the creation of this very website), and was a founding member of the MAPS Graduate Student Association. In this conversation, Jonathan and Neşe discuss her radical healing from crippling childhood social anxiety through the intervention of LSD, her struggles with postpartum depression, and her advocacy for human breastmilk sharing. They also talk about the founding of Psychedemia, her work on the Leary Papers, and their shared conviction in the urgent need for more women and voices of color in the psychedelic conversation. Neşe also talks about her recent news that she is one of the recipients of the 2016 Cosmic Sister Spirit Plant and Women of the Psychedelic Renaissance Grants.
