What do Alberta's towns and cities most need right now? A solution to violent crime? Better access to healthcare? $30 billion to save essential infrastructure from collapse? This episode, four Alberta mayors tell us their top priorities two weeks out from the provincial election.  3:35 | Violent crime is up in Edmonton almost 17% over last year. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi knows it's part of the reason why the downtown core's not nearly as vibrant as it once was. What's the solution? Sohi joins Ryan in studio to discuss his State of the City address earlier in the week, crime prevention, harm reduction, the baffling decision to spare an Edmonton cop from charges in the brutal beating of teen Pacey Dumas, and the new Indigenous name for the longest river valley pedestrian trail in North America. 34:15 | Experts say Alberta's got a $30 billion problem on its hands. You might not have heard about it because it's not sexy: it's an infrastructure deficit. And it's a big deal. Mayors Cathy Heron (St. Albert), Tyler Gandam (Wetaskiwin), and Angela Duncan (Alberta Beach) form our Real Talk Round Table, and tell us what they want to see from provincial party leaders through the election campaign.  CHECK OUT AB MUNIS ONLINE: https://www.abmunis.ca/ 1:05:25 | The Lebanese Burger Mafia premiered at Hot Docs in Toronto just a couple weeks ago, and this weekend, Omar Mouallem's feature film about the Burger Baron brand will close NorthwestFest. Omar Mouallem is a journalist and filmmaker with ADHD. Omar has worn many hats — journalist, documentary filmmaker, “fake dean” of his self-made school Pandemic University School of Writing, and real professor — all without a college degree. When he began writing Praying to the West, he struggled to focus on one topic for an entire book. That led Omar to his ADHD diagnosis. As a freelance writer for many years, Omar flourished as his busy mind moved from project to project. He's won awards for his investigative journalism, where hyperfocusing down research rabbit holes is a strength. When the pandemic hit, and work dried up overnight, he had a lot to reconsider. Don't start here! Go one ep back! This is part 2 of 2 of our conversation with documentary filmmakers Omar Mouallem and Dylan Rhys Howard, creators of “Digging in the Dirt” — a documentary film about addiction, suicide, and men's mental health in the Alberta oil sands. Find it on CBC Gem, and listen on to hear them share views on things like: How do we think about work? Is productivity worth more than life itself? Not sure anyone would openly conquer, but what does our economy's last — oh, I don't know — few hundred years reflect? How much of our identities are intrinsically tied into our occupational endeavours? Is work the epitome of our cultural values? Is there that much more of a culture of silence around men's mental health, given our hegemonic ideologies about masculinity? Does reporting on suicide expose and curb paths that lead to them or encourage copycats? What kind of fear is good to have as a journalist? Emotionally, how does communication like texting or typing differ from speaking the words from your mouth? So. Many. Questions. They also open up about their own mental health whilst working on a documentary about suicide. Spoiler alert: one starts going to therapy, the other claims to have been going to therapy long before it was cool. Let's get deep and have fun about it. We dive into the social, economical, and emotional expectations of men in the oil & gas culture with documentary filmmakers Omar Mouallem and Dylan Rhys Howard. Their film “Digging in the Dirt” (on CBC Gem) focuses on addiction, suicide, and men's mental health in the Alberta oil sands. They explore the layers underneath the culture of silence that surround men's mental health and how men are sometimes stoic to their own detriment. The more they learned about men's mental health, the more they were able to reflect on their own personal mental struggles and journeys. If the work didn't begin personal, it certainly became so. This was such a poignant and deep conversation that we kept Omar from his kids for an extra episode's worth of discussion. Who gets to tell the story of Alberta? What are the stories Albertans tell themselves – and what are the stories that get told about them? Whoever controls those narratives controls the way Albertans see themselves and are seen by others. In Part Four of Alberta Unbound, host Paula Simons debates the stories and myths of Alberta with five provocative guests: Shannon Stubbs, the Conservative MP for the riding of Lakeland, award-winning magazine writer Omar Mouallem, Jared Wesley, a professor of political science at the University of Alberta, Doug Griffiths, an author and former Conservative provincial cabinet minister, and Cree elder and academic Diana Steinhauer.

And how has it changed over the last hundred years. In Part Three of Alberta Unbound, host Paula Simons discusses Alberta struggles and Alberta stereotypes with panelists Dr. Jared Wesley, a professor of political science from the University of Alberta; Shannon Stubbs, the Conservative MP for the riding of Lakeland, northeast of Edmonton; Dr. Diana Steinhauer, the president of Yellowhead Tribal College; acclaimed journalist Omar Mouallem,  and author and former Alberta cabinet minister Doug Griffiths.

When it comes to rap, where does artistic licence end and confession begin? According to prosecutors in at least 30 cases from the last decade, it starts when the artist is charged with a crime and the lyrics are parsed for clues to a case or for proof of bad character. Many of these defendants are convicted of their crimes, but should their music be a permissible tool? What is the threshold? And does the practice intentionally or unintentionally tap into the unconscious biases of jurors with the fate of young black and indigenous men in their hands? This roundtable discussion on the inclusion of rap as criminal evidence brings together three experts: University of California, Irvine criminologist Adam Dunbar, University of Toronto sociologist Jooyoung Lee, and lawyer Hilary Dudding, whose case, R. v. Campbell, could effect future trials in Canada. They join guest host Omar Mouallem for the episode.Support CANADALAND: https://canadaland.com/joinSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But I wanted to delve a little deeper and lucky enough I stumbled into an article a friend shared with me, a phenomenal three part story for Philadelphia Print Works entitled “B-Boys and Men: Towards a More Holistic Expression of Masculinity in Hip Hop”, highlighting historically how hip hop and rap have used gender and sexual identities. Along with that, asking questions to other male-identifying people about what it is to be a man in hip hop. John Morrison, the writer of the piece is also a born and raised Philadelphian who for most of his life has embodied hip-hop culture. I was so happy to get a chance to talk to John, a musician, a podcaster on Serious Rap Shit podcast, and a generally conscious and educated human being. Sometimes a podcast is too good for me to go through it thoroughly for you and provide a breakdown. This is one of those podcasts. Last weekend, Scott and I spent some time with writer, journalist and lyricist Omar Mouallem. I've been reading Omar's stuff in newspapers and magazines for years. I got to know him as one of the frequent readers at Edmonton Story Slam (also featured in this episode). I've even been the subject of one of Omar's pieces. He's a thoughtful man, a gracious and thorough interviewer and a really excellent person. We wanted to find out more about Omar and his experiences, so Scott and I spent an hour — which wasn't enough time — chatting with him about his recent appointment to EPL's Writer-in-Residence chair, and how he manages his work as an independent writer. Omar tells stories — it's his job. But in this episode he tells stories, making my and Scott's jobs all the easier. Give this show a listen, and experience Omar Mouallem: the man, the rapper, the guy who took his shoes off and leaned back in a chair to chat with us like we were old friends.
