He founded the Interdependence Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to secular Buddhist practice and transformational activism and arts, and served as Executive Director from 2007-2011. For the past 20+ years, Ethan has taught meditation and Buddhist psychology classes and workshops all around New York City and North America and Europe, along with working with students privately. He has primarily studied in the Shambhala and other Tibetan traditions, but he has also studied Theravadan and Soto Zen Buddhism. As well, he is an avid yoga practitioner. He served as Shastri, or Senior Teacher-In-Residence, for the Shambhala Meditation Center of New York, from 2010-2018. He was formerly on the part-time faculty at Eugene Lang College at New School University and has lectured at Brown, Wesleyan, Yale, NYU, FIT, Antioch and other universities, and as well as at many other meditation/yoga centers and conferences all around the country and the world. Jonathan Zap is an author, philosopher, journalist, and teacher who has written extensively on psychology and contemporary mythology. Jonathan grew up in the Bronx and attended the Bronx High School of Science. He graduated from Ursinus College with honors in Philosophy and English, and received a Master's Degree in Creative Writing from NYU. He has taught English in high school and college and worked with troubled youth as the dean of a public high school in the South Bronx. As a wilderness guide, Jonathan has led inner-city kids and other young people on expeditions to remote desert canyons and Mount Rainier's summit. Jonathan also has a GG–a degree in gemology, and worked at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as a staff gemologist and instructor in diamond grading and gemstone identification. He is the author of Crossing the Event Horizon—Human Metamorphosis and the Singularity Archetype, and his related sci-fi epic, Parallel Journeys. The legendary teletai of Orpheus were not simply "hymns"--they were initiatic poems for meditation and ritual, magical, and ceremonial use, each one addressed to a specific diety or virtue.  In The Magic of the Orphic Hymns, Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac recapture the magical vitality of the teletai that inspired mystery cults, Western esotericism, art, music and countercultures throughout Western history.  Ronnie joins us in this interview to provide a survey of the historical landscape of origin and evolution of the archetypical myth of Orpheus. "Whether or not you know it, you've probably been influenced by the beliefs of the Gnostics and their powerful grasp over aspects of Western spirituality. Many schools of metaphysics, the occult, mystical teachings, and even fraternal organizations and secret societies have borrowed heavily from Gnostic teaching. It's impossible to do justice to Gnosticism in a single article, but I'll do my best to introduce you to some of the basic concepts, leaving further research to those spurred on by the mysteries inherent in the Gnostic world. The Gnostics believed that they were privy to a secret knowledge about the divine, hence the name.
