Cole WIlliams of the Greater New Orleans Citizen's Relief Team talks with host Max Rameau about liberating homes owned by the city of New Orleans, renovating them, and moving in unhoused people.Described as having “the heart of Bob Marley, soul of Sam Cooke and grit of Etta James”, New Orleans-based Cole Williams and The Cole Williams Band (CWB) has rooted their sound in the tradition of Gil Scott-Heron, creating songs that reflect the everyday experiences and hopes of Black people all around the world. Their new album, “Give Power to the People'' are anthems of the Movement for Black Lives and certainly for people struggling to make sense out of this dangerous and hopeful moment.Over the course of her career, Cole has provided vocals and percussion for Joey Bada$$, Chiddy Bang, Beats By The Pound, Aloe Blacc, Little Jackie, Diane Birch, Somi, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Kaissa, Dana Fuchs, Pimps Of Joytime, Holy Warriors (Harold Brown, Bill Summers, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes), and commercial/tv recordings for CoverGirl, JCPenney, Suave, Smash, and Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami. CWBs' live performance highlights include The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Joshua Tree Music Festival, French Quarter Festival, Blue Note NYC and opened for India Arie, Emily King, Ozomatli, The Wild Magnolias, Corey Henry and Treme Funktet, and Lauryn Hill.Following frequent street demonstrations at New Orleans' City Hall, Williams and The Greater New Orleans Citizens Relief Team organized and succeeded in getting the City to provide emergency housing in empty hotels in August 2020, and now they are renovating City-owned blighted houses with the presently unhoused people that will live in them. “We are calling all creatives to action. Now is the time for musicians, artists, dancers, rappers, poets, actors and actresses to unite and design a culture where we share our gifts, skills, talents and resources with the least of ours, specifically in the unhoused community, to create a world where wealth is shared equally, and white supremacy cannot survive”    The bedrock of The Cole Williams Band's new album and community organizing follows the course civil rights veteran, Ella Baker, taught that created a successful and historic freedom movement. “Give Power To The People”, articulates the core of their organizing: go to the poorest people, create a shared plan for advancement, raise the spirits and awareness of our people, gain broad support and make it happen. “We believe the practice of humanity is the blueprint for freedom and equality”.See more of the work of host Max Rameau at pacapower.org. Barnett English, founder of the twice a year Joshua Tree Music Festival in Joshua Tree, California, has worked tirelessly to bring his singular vision of a festival to life. The goal, as Barnett sees it, is to aim for as wide a range of genres and artists as possible with quality as the main deciding factor. While you will see festival stalwarts such as the North Mississippi All-Stars and Dumpstaphunk you will also be exposed to band from around the world. Afrobeat flows into aboriginal folks into Americana into straight old fashioned rock and roll and around again. I got to talk to him about the history of what he is building, the method to his madness and his thoughts on the future. Dig it!

In tracking down some family history on her Dad's side, Mia's first desert experience was in Sedona, AZ. Later, frequent travels with theatre companies or just her own wanderlust seeking out a place to call home, Mia began using Joshua Tree National Park as her 're-set' location. She'd stop in on her way out of Southern California and again on her way back to enjoy the peace and quiet and get some balance and focus before heading back to the city.   Right out of high school Mia was hired to work for the California State Park Service and was stationed at Big Sur. There, she met some locals and five of them formed The Big Sur Players, creating dinner theatre on the deck of a restaurant. In this episode, Mia talks about how this experience led to her 30-year career in theatre as an actor, set designer and technical director. When she crossed the country to Brooklyn, there was less involvement in theatre and more focus on woodworking, creating organizational shelving for small city apartment dwellers.   At one point, Mia got an RV and made some trips to various locations around the U.S., to figure out where to lay down some roots. As her 50th birthday approached, she began thinking she wanted to be near family, but also wanted a slower place where it was peaceful and she could switch gears and pursue her new passion of furniture building. Enter Joshua Tree. Mia staked her claim at the Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground, but a few weeks later was told she'd need to vacate for a few weeks due to the Joshua Tree Music Festival. Turns out Mia was in the perfect place as a new resident with a background in theatre production and construction and found herself right at home helping with some construction of the festival grounds, as well as assisting with food prep for the volunteers and ultimately, found her community here in the desert.   View Mia's work and contact her for your custom furniture and woodworking needs at:   Mia Torres Builds on Facebook

Desert rat: Slang, a person who has spent a long time in the desert.   Shannon Swanson-Briggs came to the desert at the age of 10, spending a great deal of time in what was then known as Joshua Tree National Monument. Shannon graduated from 29Palms High School and only left the desert once for a brief period.  Shannon returned to the desert, loves the weather and hiking, particularly local spots not yet discovered by the burgeoning tourist population. She and Destany are like two peas in a pod.   DJ, as she is also known, is a born and raised desert rat and was a Joshua Tree 'poster child', appearing in the local newspaper as a helper and participant in many local community events like Coyote Fest, Turtle Days (Joshua Tree is famous for it's desert tortoise population) and the Joshua Tree Music Festival.  Her love of theatre began at the age of eight, as part of a local community youth acting class. DJ then became involved with the Hi-Desert Cultural Center, taking on many behind-the-scenes jobs. That love now propels her to Seattle's Cornish College of the Arts in the fall. To supplement her college expenses, DJ is selling some of her art, which can be found on her Facebook page.   Though growing up in the desert was fun for both of them, it has also brought tragedy. Shannon's brother, DJ's uncle, Rick, was struck down by cancer two years ago at the age of 46 and they also lost a dear family friend in a desert natural disaster, demonstrating that while the desert can be beautiful and magical, it can also be dangerous and devastating.
