This week we are highlighting one of the conversations from MMA's 87th Annual Convention held at the Augusta Civic Center, October 4 & 5, 2023. This year's convention theme was "Lead, Motivate, Communicate" and featured dynamic speakers like Leila Brammer, Director of Outreach and Instructional Development of the Parrhesia Program for Public Discourse, University of Chicago on "Civic Leadership and the Imperative of Effective Communication" and Yellow Light Breen, President & CEO, Maine Development Foundation on "Leading for Economic Innovation and Prosperity", and an uplifting reminder of why we serve local government and how to not despair in these unprecedented times with a presentation from Ron Holifield, Chief Executive Officer, Strategic Government Resources and former City Manager, "It's Not About Me, It's Not About Now". An elections update session was one of many offered and provided by Julie Flynn, Deputy Secretary of State, Maine Secretary of State.  In this episode we chat with Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows about security issues facing Maine's town and city clerks this election season on the convention floor. The audio quality is not the best, and for this we apologize but the message is still important and one we think is worth a listen.

Hello! It's time I let you know about a recent project I've been involved in..... ...I've helped write a book!! Woo hoo! And it's all about one of my FAVOURITE SUBJECTS - Investing. It's written for women, by women and is being released on International Women's Day by publishers Harriman House (who incidentally have also published next month's bookclub book - The Psychology of Money). Why is this book both timely and essential? >> A 2022 Bankrate study found women feel more financially stressed as 60% worry about emergency savings compared to 53% of men >> According to finder.com, less than 30% of women in the UK invest >> Despite fewer women investing, a 2018 three-year study of Barclays investors showed women outperform men by 1.8%. Editor Amanda Taylor has brought together leading women from the world of investment and asks: • What is the impact of rising living costs? • Where to start with investing your money? • How can your health affect your money? • How can you make sure your money is being invested in alignment with your values? • What psychological biases affect how well you invest? I'm so excited about this... it's not my own book, but it's a stepping stone to my own book (which I'm aiming to publish in 2024 so watch this space). I'm so humbled to be a part of this and I'm looking forward to reading my own copy soon! You can order an e-book or physical book here direct from the publisher Harriman House. At the time of release, Bookshop.org* was selling it slightly cheaper, so you might want to pick that one instead (*affiliate link). In this episode, I talk with fellow author Julie Flynn abut the book, women and investing, and have a general catch up :) We haven't chatted since clubhouse! Enjoy! Nikki

The shift to mask wearing and homeworking saw many of us ditch our make-up during the pandemic. Perhaps not the best time to launch a new beauty business – but that's what Bobbi Brown has done. She talks to Emma Barnett about her new beauty range and her career in the industry. Phantom of the Opera was first performed 35 years ago in London's West End. It's the second longest-running musical here, the longest running show in Broadway history and has been performed worldwide and seen by more than an estimated 130 million people in 145 cities across 27 countries. It has just reopened and Lucy St Louis is playing the female lead – Christine Daee, the first Black woman to play this role. From George Eliot to JK Rowling, it is no secret that there is an assumption some men are put off by reading works written by women. But with figures showing men are four times as likely to pick up books written by other men than women, whereas women are just as likely to read books by men as they are by women, what is going wrong? And, does this affect other areas of writing? We talk to Andrew Billen a columnist with the Times, and to the author Mary Ann Sieghart . And we kick off a new series about Women and Money with two financial experts Catherine Morgan, the host of the In Her Financial Shoes podcast and Julie Flynn who's a financial adviser specialising in working with women who have lost their partner. We'll focus on financial secrets - Do you have money secrets that make you anxious? That you can't face and make you want to dive under the duvet? If so, we want to hear from you.
